In this paper, under spherical symmetry we prove a trapped surface formation criterion for the Einstein-Maxwell-charged scalar field system. We generalize an approach introduced by Christodoulou for studying the Einstein-scalar field. In appendix, with double null foliation we also reprove Christodoulou's result and for Minkowskian incoming characteristic initial data, we improve Christodoulou's bound.
We revisit and generalize, to the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system, previous results of D. Christodoulou and D. Chae concerning global solutions for the Einstein-scalar field and the Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs equations. The novelty of the present work is twofold. For one thing the assumption on the self-interaction potential is improved. For another thing explanation is furnished why the solutions obtained here and those proved by Chae for the Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs decay more slowly than those established by Christodoulou in the case of self-gravitating scalar fields. Actually this latter phenom…
We prove that for large enough data, the life span of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the following two quasilinear hyperbolic systems is finite: (1) equations of relativistic compressible fluid dynamics, (2) equations of plasma dynamics (Euler-Maxwell equations with background charge) in the spherically symmetric case.
We prove peeling estimates for the small data solutions of the Maxwell Klein Gordon equations with non-zero charge and with a non-compactly supported scalar field, in $(3+1)$ dimensions. We obtain the same decay rates as in an earlier work by Lindblad and Sterbenz, but giving a simpler proof. In particular we dispense with the fractional Morawetz estimates for the electromagnetic field, as well as certain space-time estimates. In the case that the scalar field is compactly supported we can avoid fractional Morawetz estimates for the scalar field as well. All of our estimates are carried out us…
We study smooth, global-in-time solutions of the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system that possess arbitrarily large charge densities and electric fields. In particular, we construct spherically symmetric solutions that describe a thin shell of equally charged particles concentrating arbitrarily close to the origin and which give rise to charge densities and electric fields as large as one desires at some finite time. We show that these solutions exist even for arbitrarily small initial data or any desired mass. In the latter case, the time at which solutions concentrate can also be made arbitra…
The aim of this Note is to prove by a perturbation method the existence of solutions of the coupled Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell equations for a static, spherically symmetric system of two fermions in a singlet spinor state and with the electromagnetic coupling constant $(\frac{e}{m})^2<1$. We show that the nondegenerate solution of Choquard's equation generates a branch of solutions of the Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell equations.
It has long been suggested that the Cauchy horizon of dynamical black holes is subject to a weak null singularity, under the mass inflation scenario. We study in spherical symmetry the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations and \textit{while we do not directly show mass inflation}, we obtain a "mass inflation/ridigity" dichotomy. More precisely, we prove assuming (sufficiently slow) decay of the charged scalar field on the event horizon, that the Cauchy horizon emanating from time-like infinity is $\mathcal{CH}_{i^+}= \mathcal{D} \cup \mathcal{S}$ for two (possibly empty) disjoint connected s…
The spherically symmetric null hypersurfaces in a Schwarzschild spacetime are smooth away from the singularities and foliate the spacetime. We prove the existence of more general foliations by null hypersurfaces without the spherical symmetry condition. In fact we also relax the spherical symmetry of the ambient spacetime and prove a more general result: in a perturbed Schwarzschild spacetime (not necessary being vacuum), nearly round null hypersurfaces can be extended regularly to the past null infinity, thus there exist many foliations by regular null hypersurfaces in the exterior region of …
In this paper we use Morawetz estimates with geometric energy estimates -the so-called vector field method- to prove decay results for the Maxwell field in the static exterior region of the Reissner-Nordstrøm-de Sitter black hole. We prove two types of decay: The first is a uniform decay of the energy of the Maxwell field on achronal hypersurfaces as the hypersurfaces approach timelike infinities. The second decay result is a pointwise decay in time with a rate of $t^{-1}$ which follows from local energy decay by Sobolev estimates. Both results are consequences of bounds on the conformal energ…
Strong cosmic censorship for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-charged-Klein-Gordon system with positive $Λ$: stability of the Cauchy horizon and $H^1$ extensions
In this paper we study the spherically symmetric characteristic initial data problem for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant in the interior of a black hole, assuming an exponential Price law along the event horizon. More precisely, we construct open sets of characteristic data which, on the outgoing initial null hypersurface (taken to be the event horizon), converges exponentially to a reference Reissner-Nördstrom black hole at infinity. We prove the stability of the radius function at the Cauchy horizon, and show that, depending on the decay rate of…
The recent "breakdown criterion" result of S. Klainerman and I. Rodnianski stated roughly that an Einstein-vacuum spacetime, given as a CMC foliation, can be further extended in time if the second fundamental form and the derivative of the lapse of the foliation are uniformly bounded. This theorem and its proof were extended to Einstein-scalar and Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes in the author's Ph.D. thesis. In this paper, we state the main results of the thesis, and we summarize and discuss their proofs. In particular, we will discuss the various issues resulting from nontrivial Ricci curvature a…
We study the nonlinear stability of the Cauchy horizon in the interior of extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes under spherical symmetry. We consider the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system such that the charge of the scalar field is appropriately small in terms of the mass of the background extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole. Given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data which approach the event horizon of extremal Reissner-Nordström sufficiently fast, we prove that the solution extends beyond the Cauchy horizon in $C^{0,\frac{1}{2}}\cap W^{1,2}_{loc}$, in contrast to the sub…
We analyze in detail the geometry and dynamics of the cosmological region arising in spherically symmetric black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant. More precisely, we solve, for such a system, a characteristic initial value problem with data emulating a dynamic cosmological horizon. Our assumptions are fairly weak, in that we only assume that the data approaches that of a subextremal Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black hole, without imposing any rate of decay. We then show that the radius (of symmetry) blows up along any null ray pa…
