It has long been suggested that the Cauchy horizon of dynamical black holes is subject to a weak null singularity, under the mass inflation scenario. We study in spherical symmetry the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations and \textit{while we do not directly show mass inflation}, we obtain a "mass inflation/ridigity" dichotomy. More precisely, we prove assuming (sufficiently slow) decay of the charged scalar field on the event horizon, that the Cauchy horizon emanating from time-like infinity is $\mathcal{CH}_{i^+}= \mathcal{D} \cup \mathcal{S}$ for two (possibly empty) disjoint connected sets $\mathcal{D}$ and $\mathcal{S}$ such that:
_$\mathcal{D}$ (the dynamical set) is a past set on which the Hawking mass blows up (mass inflation scenario).
_$\mathcal{S}$ (the static set) is a future set isometric to a Reissner--Nordström Cauchy horizon i.e.\ the radiation is zero on $\mathcal{S}$.
As a consequence, we establish a novel classification of Cauchy horizons into three types: dynamical ($\mathcal{S}=\emptyset$), static ($\mathcal{D}=\emptyset$) or mixed, and prove that $\mathcal{CH}_{i^+}$ is globally $C^2$-inextendible. Our main motivation is the $C^2$ Strong Cosmic Censorship Conjecture for a realistic model of spherical collapse in which charged matter emulates the repulsive role of angular momentum: in our case the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system on one-ended space-times. As a result, we prove in spherical symmetry that:
- two-ended asymptotically flat space-times are $C^2$-future-inextendible i.e. $C^2$ Strong Cosmic Censorship is true for Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon, assuming the decay of the scalar field on the event horizon at the expected rate.
- In the one-ended case, the Cauchy horizon emanating from time-like infinity is $C^2$-inextendible. This result suppresses the main obstruction to $C^2$ Strong Cosmic Censorship in spherical collapse.
It is shown in this letter that in the framework of an inhomogeneous geometry and a massive non self-interacting scalar field with spherical symmetry, one needs a homogeneous patch bigger than a dizaine of horizons in order to start inflation. The results are completly independent of initial conditions on the spatial distribution of the scalar field. The initial condition on the metric parameters are also justified. This is a generalization of the results obtained in Ref.[1], showing that their conclusions are rather robust.
We study the black hole interiors of spacetimes arising from gravitational collapse in the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field setting, and we investigate the precise blow-up rates of curvature and mass at the spacelike singularity near timelike infinity. We show in particular that the Kretschmann scalar blows up faster than in the Schwarzschild setting, due to mass inflation. Moreover, the blow-up rate is not constant and converges to the Schwarzschild rate towards timelike infinity and it depends on the precise late-time polynomial behaviour of the scalar field along the event horizo…
In this paper we study the spherically symmetric characteristic initial data problem for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant in the interior of a black hole, assuming an exponential Price law along the event horizon. More precisely, we construct open sets of characteristic data which, on the outgoing initial null hypersurface (taken to be the event horizon), converges exponentially to a reference Reissner-Nördstrom black hole at infinity. We prove the stability of the radius function at the Cauchy horizon, and show that, depending on the decay rate of…
Spherically symmetric Black Holes of the Vaidya type are examined in an asymptotically de Sitter, higher dimensional spacetime. The various horizons are located. The structure and dynamics of such horizons are studied.
We propose to describe the dynamics of a cosmological term in the spherically symmetric case by an r-dependent second rank symmetric tensor invariant under boosts in the radial direction. This proposal is based on the Petrov classification scheme and Einstein field equations in the spherically symmetric case. The inflationary equation of state p=-ρis satisfied by the radial pressure. The tangential pressure is calculated from the conservation equation (the contracted Bianchi identity).
Analytical formulas are presented describing a generic singularity inside the static spherically symmetric black holes in the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theories with triplet or doublet Higgs field. The singularity is spacelike and exhibits a `power-low mass inflation'. Alternatively this asymptotic may be interpreted as a pointlike singularity with a non-vanishing shear in the Kantowski-Sachs anisotropic cosmology.
Spherically symmetric gravitationally bound, oscillating scalar lumps (boson stars and oscillatons) are considered in Einstein's gravity coupled to massive scalar fields in 1+D dimensional de Sitter-type inflationary space-times. We show that due to inflation bosons stars and oscillatons lose mass through scalar radiation, but at a rate that is exponentially small when the expansion rate is slow.
Using the canonical formalism for spherically symmetric black hole inside the apparent horizon we investigate the mass inflation in the Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot o$m black hole in the framework of quantum gravity. It is shown that like in classical gravity the combination of the effects of the influx coming from the past null infinity and the outflux backscattered by the black hole's curvature causes the mass inflation even in quantum gravity. The results indicate that the effects of quantum gravity neither alter the classical picture of the mass inflation nor prevent the formation of the mass in…
A perturbed Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solution is used to emphasize the nature of the singularity along the Cauchy horizon of a charged spherically symmetric black hole. For these solutions, conditions may prevail under which the mass function is bounded and yet the curvature scalar $R_{αβγδ} R^{αβγδ}$ diverges.
This paper is the third part of a trilogy dedicated to the following problem: given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a cosmological constant $Λ$, with the data on the outgoing initial null hypersurface given by a subextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole event horizon, study the future extendibility of the corresponding maximal globally hyperbolic development as a "suitably regular" Lorentzian manifold. In the first part of this series we established the well posedness of the characteristic problem, whereas in the second part w…
We analytically derive a class of non-singular, static and spherically symmetric topological black hole metrics inF(R)-gravity. These have not a de Sitter core at their centre, as most model in standard General Relativity. We study the geometric properties and the motion of test particles around these objects. Since they have two horizons, the inner being of Cauchy type, we focus on the problem of mass inflation and show that it occurs except when some extremal conditions are met.
Strong cosmic censorship for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-charged-Klein-Gordon system with positive $Λ$: stability of the Cauchy horizon and $H^1$ extensions
We analyze the interior geometry of static, spherically symmetric black holes of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. Generically the solutions exhibit a behaviour that may be described as ``mass inflation'', although with a remarkable difference between the cases with and without a Higgs field. Without Higgs field the YM field induces a kind of cyclic behaviour leading to repeated cycles of mass inflation - taking the form of violent explosions - interrupted by quiescent periods and subsequent approaches to an almost Cauchy horizon. With the Higgs field no such cycles occur. In addition ther…
We analyse the geometry of a spherically symmetric black hole with an inner and outer apparent horizon which is perturbed by spherical null shells of matter. On a classical level we observe that the mass inflation instability is triggered, resulting in a growth of curvature and an inward displacement of the inner horizon. We study in detail the inner structure of the mass-inflated region and compare it with previous results obtained for the case in which the perturbing matter content has a continuous distribution. We then perform an approximate calculation of the renormalised stress-energy ten…
Two aspects of the widely accepted heuristic picture of the final state of gravitational collapse are the so-called Price law tails, describing the asymptotics of the exterior region of the black hole that forms, and Israel-Poisson's mass inflation scenario, describing the internal structure of the black hole. (The latter scenario, if valid, would indicate that the maximal development of initial data is extendible as a C^0 metric, putting into question the validity of Penrose's strong cosmic censorship conjecture.) In this talk, I shall discuss a series of rigorous results proving both Price's…
The extendibility of spacetime and the existence of weak solutions to the Einstein field equations beyond Cauchy horizons, is a crucial ingredient to examine the limits of General Relativity. Strong Cosmic Censorship serves as a firewall for gravitation by demanding inextendibility of spacetime beyond the Cauchy horizon. For asymptotically flat spacetimes, the predominance of the blueshift instability and the subsequent formation of a mass-inflation singularity at the Cauchy horizon have, so far, substantiated the conjecture. Accelerating black holes, described by the $C-$metric, are exact sol…
The mass inflation phenomenon implies that black hole interiors are unstable due to a back-reaction divergence of the perturbed black hole mass function at the Cauchy horizon. Weak point in the standard mass inflation calculations is in a fallacious using of the global Cauchy horizon as a place for the maximal growth of the back-reaction perturbations instead of the local inner apparent horizon. It is derived the new spherically symmetric back-reaction solution for two counter-streaming light-like fluxes near the inner apparent horizon of the charged black hole by taking into account its separ…
We discuss properties of a new class of p-brane models, describing intrinsically lightlike branes for any world-volume dimension, in various gravitational backgrounds of interest in the context of black hole physics. One of the characteristic features of these lightlike p-branes is that the brane tension appears as an additional nontrivial dynamical world-volume degree of freedom. Codimension one lightlike brane dynamics requires that bulk space with a bulk metric of spherically symmetric type must possess an event horizon which is automatically occupied by the lightlike brane while its tensio…
Self-similar, spherically symmetric cosmological models with a perfect fluid and a scalar field with an exponential potential are investigated. New variables are defined which lead to a compact state space, and dynamical systems methods are utilised to analyse the models. Due to the existence of monotone functions global dynamical results can be deduced. In particular, all of the future and past attractors for these models are obtained and the global results are discussed. The essential physical results are that initially expanding models always evolve away from a massless scalar field model w…
We investigate the late time acceleration with a Chaplygin type of gas in spherically symmetric inhomogeneous model. At the early phase we get Einstien-deSitter type of solution generalised to inhomogeneous spacetime. But at late stage of the evolution our solutions admit the accelerating nature of the universe. For a large scale factor our model behaves like a ?CDM model. We calculate the deceleration parameter for this anisotropic model, which, unlike its homogeneous counterpart, shows that the flip is not syn- chronous occurring early at the outer shells. This is in line with other physical…
Motivated by the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, we study the linear scalar wave equation in the interior of subextremal strictly charged Reissner-Nordström black holes by analyzing a suitably-defined "scattering map" at $0$ frequency. The method can already be demonstrated in the case of spherically symmetric scalar waves on Reissner-Nordström: we show that assuming suitable ($L^2$-averaged) upper and lower bounds on the event horizon, one can prove ($L^2$-averaged) polynomial lower bound for the solution (1) on any radial null hypersurface transversally intersecting the Cauchy horizon, …

The interior geometry of static, spherically symmetric black holes of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory is analyzed. It is found that in contrast to the Abelian case generically no inner (Cauchy) horizon is formed inside non-Abelian black holes. Instead the solutions come close to a Cauchy horizon but then undergo an enormous growth of the mass function, a phenomenon which can be termed `mass inflation' in analogy to what is observed for perturbations of the Reissner-Nordstrøm solution. A significant difference between the theories with and without a Higgs field is observed. Without a Higgs…
We show that mass inflation occurs inside spinning black cosmic string, which is a solution of a low-energy effective string theory in $(3+1)$-dimensions. This confirms Poisson and Israel's conjecture that the inner mass parameter diverges even if spacetime is not spherically symmetric.
We discuss spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions of Einstein's equations which have equation of state ($p=αμ$) and which are self-similar in the sense that all dimensionless variables depend only upon $z\equiv r/t$. For each value of $α$, such solutions are described by two parameters and have now been completely classified. There is a 1-parameter family of solutions asymptotic to the flat Friedmann model at large values of z. These represent either black holes or density perturbations which grow as fast as the particle horizon; the underdense solutions may be relevant to the existence…
We study numerically the stability of Morris & Thorne's first traversible wormhole, shown previously by Ellis to be a solution for a massless ghost Klein-Gordon field. Our code uses a dual-null formulation for spherically symmetric space-time integration, and the numerical range covers both universes connected by the wormhole. We observe that the wormhole is unstable against Gaussian pulses in either exotic or normal massless Klein-Gordon fields. The wormhole throat suffers a bifurcation of horizons and either explodes to form an inflationary universe or collapses to a black hole, if the total…
A phenomenological framework is presented for incorporating quantum gravity motivated corrections into the dynamics of spherically symmetric collapse. The effective equations are derived from a variational principle that guarantees energy conservation and the existence of a Birkhoff theorem. The gravitational potential can be chosen as a function of the areal radius to yield specific non-singular static spherically symmetric solutions that generically have two horizons. For a specific choice of potential the effective stress energy tensor violates only the dominant energy condition. The violat…
We investigate the global structure of the space time with a spherically symmetric inhomogeneity using a metric junction, and classify all possible types. We found that a motion with a negative gravitational mass is possible although the energy condition of the matter is not violated. Using the result, formation of black hole and worm hole during the inflationary era is discussed.

We present a family of spherically symmetric multi-horizon spacetimes with a vacuum dark fluid, associated with a time-dependent and spatially inhomogeneous cosmological term. The vacuum dark fluid is defined in a model-independent way by the symmetry of its stress-energy tensor, i.e., its invariance under Lorentz boosts in a distinguished spatial direction ($p_r=-ρ$ for spherical symmetry), which makes the dark fluid essentially anisotropic and allows its density to evolve. The related cosmological models belong to the Lemaitre class of models with anisotropic fluids and describe a universe w…
Motivated by the Higgs Inflation scenario, we study static spherically-symmetric solutions of the non-Abelian Higgs model coupled non-minimally to Gravity. We find solutions for the self-gravitating sphaleron as well as monopole-like solutions and study the impact of the non-minimal coupling on their properties. Finally we discuss shortly the possibility that these solutions interact gravitationally with star-like objects like boson stars.
Black holes encountered in general relativity are characterized by spacetime singularities hidden within an event horizon. These singularities provide a key motivation to go beyond general relativity and look for regular black holes where the spacetime curvature remains bounded everywhere. A prominent mechanism achieving this replaces the singularity by a regular patch of de Sitter space. The resulting regular geometries exhibit two horizons: the outer event horizon is supplemented by an inner Cauchy horizon. The latter could render the geometry unstable against perturbations through the so-ca…

A modified theory of general relativity is proposed, where the gravitational constant is replaced by a dynamical variable in space-time. The dynamics of the gravitational coupling is described by a family of parametrized null geodesics, implying that the gravitational coupling at a space-time point is determined by solving transport equations along all null geodesics through this point. General relativity with dynamical gravitational coupling (DGC) is introduced. We motivate DGC from general considerations and explain how it arises in the context of causal fermion systems. The underlying physi…
f(T) gravity, a generally modified teleparallel gravity, has become very popular in recent times as it is able to reproduce the unification of inflation and late-time acceleration without the need of a dark energy component or an inflation field. In this present work, we investigate specifically the range of validity of Birkhoff's theorem with the general tetrad field via perturbative approach. At zero order, Birkhoff's theorem is valid and the solution is the well known Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric. Then considering the special case of the diagonal tetrad field, we present a new spherically sym…
Spherically symmetric cosmological equations in the usual FLRW coordinates are explored, with different sources. The first couples a perfect fluid with a quintessence scalar field and the second couples a perfect fluid to a tachyonic scalar field. In both cases, in the inflationary regime, the scale factor a(t) and its first two time derivatives are positive definite. Both sources in the matter phase yield a scale factor and its first derivative as positive definite. In both cases and in each phase, the general solutions of the differential equations together with the algebraic and differentia…
We study the quantum gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric pressureless dust. Using an effective equation derived from a polymer quantization in the connection-triad phase space variables of general relativity, we find numerically, for a variety of initial dust configurations, that (i) trapped surfaces form and disappear as an initially collapsing density profile evolves into an outgoing shockwave; (ii) black hole lifetime is proportional to the square of its mass; and (iii) there is no mass inflation at inner apparent horizons. These results provide a substantially different view of…
Non-singular black hole geometries typically come with two spacetime horizons: an (outer) event horizon and an (inner) Cauchy horizon. This nurtures the speculation that they may be subject to a mass-inflation effect which renders the Cauchy horizon unstable. We analyze the dynamics associated with spherically symmetric, regular black holes taking the full backreaction between the infalling matter and geometry into account. On this basis, we identify the crucial features taming the growth of the mass function and diminishing the curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon. It is demonstrated e…
An astrophysically realistic model of wave dynamics in black-hole spacetimes must involve a non-spherical background geometry with angular momentum. We consider the evolution of gravitational (and electromagnetic) perturbations in rotating Kerr spacetimes. We show that a rotating Kerr black hole becomes `bald' slower than the corresponding spherically-symmetric Schwarzschild black hole. Moreover, our results turn over the traditional belief (which has been widely accepted during the last three decades) that the late-time tail of gravitational collapse is universal. In particular, we show that …
The relativistic time evolution of multi-layer spherically symmetric shell systems---consisting of infinitely thin shells separated by vacuum regions---is examined. Whenever two shells collide the evolution is continued with the assumption that the collision is totally transparent. The time evolution of various multi-layer shell systems---comprised by large number of shells thereby mimicking the behavior of a thick shell making it possible to study the formation of acoustic singularities---is analyzed numerically and compared in certain cases to the corresponding Newtonian time evolution. The …
We study the spherically symmetric collapse of a real, minimally coupled, massive scalar field in an asymptotically Einstein-de Sitter spacetime background. By means of an eikonal approximation for the field and metric functions, we obtain a simple analytical criterion---involving the physical size and mass scales (the field's inverse Compton wavelength and the spacetime gravitational mass) of the initial matter configuration---for generic (non-time-symmetric) initial data to collapse to a black hole. This analytical condition can then be used to place constraints on the initial primordial bla…
Extending the study of spherically symmetric metrics satisfying the dominant energy condition and exhibiting singularities of power-law type initiated in SI93, we identify two classes of peculiar interest: focusing timelike singularity solutions with the stress-energy tensor of a radiative perfect fluid (equation of state: $p={1\over 3} ρ$) and a set of null singularity classes verifying identical properties. We consider two important applications of these results: to cosmology, as regards the possibility of solving the horizon problem with no need to resort to any inflationary scenario, and t…
We investigate the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) from the collapse of spherically symmetric domain wall bubbles, which spontaneously nucleate via quantum tunneling during inflation. Since the tension of domain walls changes with time and so domain walls nucleate in a short time interval, the mass function of PBHs in general has a spike-like structure. In contrast to models in which PBHs produced from overdense regions, our model avoids the uncertainties of PBHs production mechanism. PBHs from domain walls with mass around $10^{20}\mathrm{g}$ may constitute all dark matter, those w…
The evolution of weak discontinuity is investigated in the flat FRW universe with a single scalar field and with multiple scalar fields. We consider both massless scalar fields and scalar fields with exponential potentials. Then we find that a new type of instability, i.e. kink instability develops in the flat FRW universe with massless scalar fields. The kink instability develops with scalar fields with considerably steep exponential potentials, while less steep exponential potentials do not suffer from kink instability. In particular, assisted inflation with multiple scalar fields does not s…
Scalar-tensor theories of gravitation have recently regained a great interest after the discovery of the Chameleon mechanism and of the Galileon models. The former allows, in principle, to reconcile the presence of cosmological scalar fields with the constraints from experiments at the Solar System scale. The latter open up the possibility of building inflationary models that, among other things, do not need ad hoc potentials. Further generalizations have finally led to the most general tensor-scalar theory, recently dubbed the "Fab Four", with only first and second order derivatives of the fi…
Here we give a more detailed account of the part of the conference report that was devoted to reinterpreting the Einstein `unified models of gravity and electromagnetism' (1923) as the unified theory of dark energy (cosmological constant) and dark matter (neutral massive vector particle having only gravitational interactions). After summarizing Einstein's work and related earlier work of Weyl and Eddington, we present an approach to finding spherically symmetric solutions of the simplest variant of the Einstein models that was earlier mentioned in Weyl's work as an example of his generalizatio…
We describe the dynamics of a cosmological term in the spherically symmetric case by an r-dependent second rank symmetric tensor Λ_{μν} invariant under boosts in the radial direction. The cosmological tensor Λ_{μν} represents the extension of the Einstein cosmological term Λg_{μν} which allows a cosmological constant be variable. This possibility is based on the Petrov classification scheme and Einstein field equations in the spherically symmetric case. The inflationary equation of state is satisfied by the radial pressure p_r^Λ=-ρ^Λ. The tangential pressure is calculated from the conservation…
In the special case of a spherically symmetric solution of Einstein equations coupled to a scalar massless field, we examine the consequences on the exact solution imposed by a semiclassical treatment of gravitational interaction when the scalar field is quantized. In agreement with the work of Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR), imposing the principle of gravitational stability against localization of events, we find that the region where an event is localized, or where initial conditions can be assigned, has a minimal extension, of the order of the Planck length. This conclusion, thoug…
We study a black hole radiation inside the apparent horizon in quantum gravity. First we perform a canonical quantization for spherically symmetric geometry where one of the spatial coordinates is dealt as the time variable since we would like to consider the interior region of a black hole. Next this rather general formalism is applied for a specific model where the ingoing Vaidya metric is used as a simple model of an evaporating black hole. Following Tomimatsu's idea, we will solve analytically the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the vicinity of the apparent horizon and see that mass-loss rate o…
