Motivated by the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, we study the linear scalar wave equation in the interior of subextremal strictly charged Reissner-Nordström black holes by analyzing a suitably-defined "scattering map" at $0$ frequency. The method can already be demonstrated in the case of spherically symmetric scalar waves on Reissner-Nordström: we show that assuming suitable ($L^2$-averaged) upper and lower bounds on the event horizon, one can prove ($L^2$-averaged) polynomial lower bound for the solution
(1) on any radial null hypersurface transversally intersecting the Cauchy horizon, and
(2) along the Cauchy horizon towards timelike infinity.
Taken together with known results regarding solutions to the wave equation in the exterior, (1) above in particular provides yet another proof of the linear instability of the Reissner-Nordström Cauchy horizon. As an application of (2) above, we prove a conditional mass inflation result for a nonlinear system, namely, the Einstein-Maxwell-(real)-scalar field system in spherical symmetry. For this model, it is known that for a generic class of Cauchy data $\mathcal G$, the maximal globally hyperbolic future developments are $C^2$-future-inextendible. We prove that if a (conjectural) improved decay result holds in the exterior region, then for the maximal globally hyperbolic developments arising from initial data in $\mathcal G$, the Hawking mass blows up identically on the Cauchy horizon.
A perturbed Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solution is used to emphasize the nature of the singularity along the Cauchy horizon of a charged spherically symmetric black hole. For these solutions, conditions may prevail under which the mass function is bounded and yet the curvature scalar $R_{αβγδ} R^{αβγδ}$ diverges.
The evolution of weak discontinuity is investigated on horizons in the $n$-dimensional static solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar-$Λ$ system, including the Reissner-Nordström-(anti) de Sitter black hole. The analysis is essentially local and nonlinear. We find that the Cauchy horizon is unstable, whereas both the black-hole event horizon and the cosmological event horizon are stable. This new instability, the so-called kink instability, of the Cauchy horizon is completely different from the well-known ``infinite-blueshift'' instability. The kink instability makes the analytic continuation…
This work studies solutions of the scalar wave equation \[\Box_gϕ=0\] on a fixed subextremal Reissner-Nordström spacetime with non-vanishing charge $q$ and mass $M$. In a recent paper, Luk and Oh established that generic smooth and compactly supported initial data on a Cauchy hypersurface lead to solutions which are singular in the $W^{1,2}_{loc}$ sense near the Cauchy horizon in the black hole interior, and it follows easily that they are also singular in the $W^{1,p}_{loc}$ sense for $p>2$. On the other hand, the work of Franzen shows that such solutions are non-singular near the Cauchy hori…
It has long been suggested that solutions to linear scalar wave equation $$\Box_gϕ=0$$ on a fixed subextremal Reissner-Nordström spacetime with non-vanishing charge are generically singular at the Cauchy horizon. We prove that generic smooth and compactly supported initial data on a Cauchy hypersurface indeed give rise to solutions with infinite nondegenerate energy near the Cauchy horizon in the interior of the black hole. In particular, the solution generically does not belong to $W^{1,2}_{loc}$. This instability is related to the celebrated blue shift effect in the interior of the black hol…
The mass inflation phenomenon implies that black hole interiors are unstable due to a back-reaction divergence of the perturbed black hole mass function at the Cauchy horizon. Weak point in the standard mass inflation calculations is in a fallacious using of the global Cauchy horizon as a place for the maximal growth of the back-reaction perturbations instead of the local inner apparent horizon. It is derived the new spherically symmetric back-reaction solution for two counter-streaming light-like fluxes near the inner apparent horizon of the charged black hole by taking into account its separ…
This paper establishes a mathematical proof of the blue-shift instability at the sub-extremal Kerr Cauchy horizon for the linearised vacuum Einstein equations. More precisely, we exhibit conditions on the $s=+2$ Teukolsky field, consisting of suitable integrated upper and lower bounds on the decay along the event horizon, that ensure that the Teukolsky field, with respect to a frame that is regular at the Cauchy horizon, becomes singular. The conditions are in particular satisfied by solutions of the Teukolsky equation arising from generic and compactly supported initial data by the recent wor…
For a certain region of the parameter space $\{M,e,Λ\}$, the Cauchy horizon of a (charged) black hole residing in de Sitter space is classically stable to gravitational perturbations. This implies that, when left to its own devices, classical theory is unable to retain full predictive power: the evolution of physical fields beyond the Cauchy horizon is not uniquely determined by the initial conditions. In this paper we argue that the Cauchy horizon of a Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black hole must always be unstable quantum mechanically.
We consider smooth solutions of the wave equation, on a fixed black hole region of a subextremal Reissner-Nordström (asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter) spacetime, whose restrictions to the event horizon have compact support. We provide criteria, in terms of surface gravities, for the waves to remain in $C^l$, $l\geq 1$, up to and including the Cauchy horizon. We also provide sufficient conditions for the blow up of solutions in $C^1$ and $H^1$.
Using the general solution to the Einstein equations on intersecting null surfaces developed by Hayward, we investigate the non-linear instability of the Cauchy horizon inside a realistic black hole. Making a minimal assumption about the free gravitational data allows us to solve the field equations along a null surface crossing the Cauchy Horizon. As in the spherical case, the results indicate that a diverging influx of gravitational energy, in concert with an outflux across the CH, is responsible for the singularity. The spacetime is asymptotically Petrov type N, the same algebraic type as a…
The stability of cosmological event and Cauchy horizons of spacetimes associated with plane symmetric domain walls are studied. It is found that both horizons are not stable against perturbations of null fluids and massless scalar fields; they are turned into curvature singularities. These singularities are light-like and strong in the sense that both the tidal forces and distortions acting on test particles become unbounded when theses singularities are approached.
In classical general relativity the Cauchy horizon within a two-horizon black hole is unstable via a phenomenon known as mass inflation, in which the mass parameter (and the spacetime curvature) of the black hole diverges at the Cauchy horizon. Here we study this effect for loop black holes -- quantum gravitationally corrected black holes from loop quantum gravity -- whose construction alleviates the $r=0$ singularity present in their classical counterparts. We use a simplified model of mass inflation, which makes use of the generalized DTR relation, to conclude that the Cauchy horizon of loop…
We study the inner-structure of a charged black-hole which is formed from the gravitational collapse of a self-gravitating charged scalar-field. Starting with a regular spacetime, we follow the evolution through the formation of an apparent horizon, a Cauchy horizon and a final central singularity. We find a null, weak, mass-inflation singularity along the Cauchy horizon, which is a precursor of a strong, spacelike singularity along the $r=0$ hypersurface.
Recently, Carroll and Chen [hep-th/0410270] suggested a promising natural explanation of the thermodynamic arrow of time. However, we criticize their assertion that there exists a Cauchy hypersurface with a minimal entropy and argue that such a Cauchy hypersurface is not needed for an explanation of the arrow of time.
The structure of the Cauchy horizon of a charged rotating black hole is analyzed under the combined effect of an ingoing and outgoing flux of gravitational waves. In particular, by means of an axisymmetric realization of the Ori model, the growth of the mass parameter near the Cauchy horizon is studied in the slow rotation approximation. It is shown that the mass-parameter inflates, while the angular momentum per unit mass deflates, but initial deviations from spherical symmetry survive.
It has long been suggested that the Cauchy horizon of dynamical black holes is subject to a weak null singularity, under the mass inflation scenario. We study in spherical symmetry the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations and \textit{while we do not directly show mass inflation}, we obtain a "mass inflation/ridigity" dichotomy. More precisely, we prove assuming (sufficiently slow) decay of the charged scalar field on the event horizon, that the Cauchy horizon emanating from time-like infinity is $\mathcal{CH}_{i^+}= \mathcal{D} \cup \mathcal{S}$ for two (possibly empty) disjoint connected s…
There are several examples known of two dimensional spacetimes which are linearly stable when perturbed by test scalar classical fields, but which are unstable when perturbed by test scalar quantum fields. We elucidate the mechanism behind such instabilities by considering minimally coupled, massless, scalar, test quantum fields on general two dimensional spacetimes with Cauchy horizons which are classically stable. We identify a geometric feature of such spacetimes which is a necessary condition for obtaining a quantum mechanical divergence of the renormalized expected stress tensor on the Ca…
The interior geometry of static, spherically symmetric black holes of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory is analyzed. It is found that in contrast to the Abelian case generically no inner (Cauchy) horizon is formed inside non-Abelian black holes. Instead the solutions come close to a Cauchy horizon but then undergo an enormous growth of the mass function, a phenomenon which can be termed `mass inflation' in analogy to what is observed for perturbations of the Reissner-Nordstrøm solution. A significant difference between the theories with and without a Higgs field is observed. Without a Higgs…
We study gravitational collapse of a charged black hole in f(R) gravity using double-null formalism. We require cosmological stability to f(R) models; we used the Starobinsky model and the R + (1/2)cR^2 model. Charged black holes in f(R) gravity can have a new type of singularity due to higher curvature corrections, the so-called f(R)-induced singularity, although it is highly model-dependent. As the advanced time increases, the internal structure will approach the Cauchy horizon, which may not be an inner apparent horizon. There is mass inflation as one approaches the Cauchy horizon and hence…
Generic models of regular black holes have separate outer and inner horizons, both with nonzero surface gravity. It has been shown that a nonzero inner horizon surface gravity results in exponential instability at the inner horizon controlled by this parameter. This phenomenon takes the name of "mass inflation instability", and its presence has put in question the physical viability of regular black holes as alternatives to their (singular) general relativity counterparts. In this paper, we show that it is possible to make the inner horizon surface gravity vanish, while maintaining the separat…

In type IIB Fibre Inflation models the inflaton is a Kaehler modulus which is kinetically coupled to the corresponding axion. In this setup the curvature of the field space induces tachyonic isocurvature perturbations normal to the background inflationary trajectory. However we argue that the associated instability is unphysical since it is due to the use of ill-defined entropy variables. In fact, upon using the correct relative entropy perturbation, we show that in Fibre Inflation axionic isocurvature perturbations decay during inflation and the dynamics is essentially single-field.
We investigate axion inflation where the gravitational Chern-Simons term is coupled to a periodic function of the inflaton. We find that tensor perturbations with different polarizations are amplified in different ways by the Chern-Simons coupling. Depending on the model parameters, the resonance amplification results in a parity-violating peak or a board plateau in the energy spectrum of gravitational waves, and the sharp cutoff in the infrared region constitutes a characteristic distinguishable from stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds produced by matter fields in Einstein gravity.
We show non-linear stability and instability results in spherical symmetry for the interior of a charged black hole -approaching a sub-extremal Reissner-Nordström background fast enough at infinity- in presence of a massive and charged scalar field, motivated by the strong cosmic censorship conjecture in that setting : 1. Stability : We prove that spherically symmetric characteristic initial data to the Einstein-Maxwell- Klein-Gordon equations approaching a Reissner-Nordström background with a sufficiently decaying polynomial decay rate on the event horizon gives rise to a space-time possessin…
We prove that a large class of smooth solutions $ψ$ to the linear wave equation $\Box_gψ=0$ on subextremal rotating Kerr spacetimes which are regular and decaying along the event horizon become singular at the Cauchy horizon. More precisely, we show that assuming appropriate upper and lower bounds on the energy along the event horizon, the solution has infinite (non-degenerate) energy on any spacelike hypersurfaces intersecting the Cauchy horizon transversally. Extrapolating from known results in the Reissner--Nordström case, the assumed upper and lower bounds required for our theorem are conj…
We investigate when effective theories of a scalar field on (quasi-)de Sitter background break down through the stochastic formalism. We derive the Fokker-Planck equation leaving the second order time derivative of the scalar field. Assuming there exists an equilibrium distribution for the field velocity, we obtain a mean value and a variance of the field velocity caused by the quantum fluctuation. Introducing coarse-grained Einstein equations, we obtain bounds for the non-eternal inflation phase and for maintaining the exact de Sitter background. We point out that those bounds derived in our …
We investigate the relation between the existence of mass inflation and model parameters of string-inspired gravity models. In order to cover various models, we investigate a Brans-Dicke theory that is coupled to a U(1) gauge field. By tuning a model parameter that decides the coupling between the Brans-Dicke field and the electromagnetic field, we can make both of models such that the Brans-Dicke field is biased toward strong or weak coupling directions after gravitational collapses. We observe that as long as the Brans-Dicke field is biased toward any (strong or weak) directions, there is no…

In this paper we study the spherically symmetric characteristic initial data problem for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant in the interior of a black hole, assuming an exponential Price law along the event horizon. More precisely, we construct open sets of characteristic data which, on the outgoing initial null hypersurface (taken to be the event horizon), converges exponentially to a reference Reissner-Nördstrom black hole at infinity. We prove the stability of the radius function at the Cauchy horizon, and show that, depending on the decay rate of…
Interior structure of non-Abelian black holes is shown to exhibit in a general case either an oscillating mass-inflationary behavior, or power-law behavior with a divergent mass function. In both cases no Cauchy horizon forms.
We consider the wave equation on Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter and more generally Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black hole spacetimes with $Λ>0$. The strength of the blue-shift instability associated to the Cauchy horizon of these spacetimes has been the subject of much discussion, since-in contrast to the $Λ=0$ case-the competition with the decay associated to the region between the event and cosmological horizons is delicate. Of particular interest is the question as to whether generic, admissible initial data posed on a Cauchy surface lead to solutions whose local energy blows up at the Cauchy horiz…
In general relativity, perturbation theory about a background solution fails if the background spacetime has a Killing symmetry and a compact spacelike Cauchy surface. This failure, dubbed as {\it linearization instability}, shows itself as non-integrability of the perturbative infinitesimal deformation to a finite deformation of the background. Namely, the linearized field equations have spurious solutions which cannot be obtained from the linearization of exact solutions. In practice, one can show the failure of the linear perturbation theory by showing that a certain quadratic (integral) co…
We consider cosmological inflation generated by a scalar field slowly rolling off from a de Sitter maximum of its potential. The models belong to the class of hilltop models and represent the most general model of this kind in which the scalar potential can be written as the sum of two exponentials. The minimally coupled Einstein-scalar gravity theory obtained in this way is the cosmological version of a two-scale generalization of known holographic models, allowing for solitonic solutions interpolating between an AdS spacetime in the infrared and scaling solutions in the ultraviolet. We then …
Spacetimes which have been considered counter-examples to strong cosmic censorship are revisited. We demonstrate the classical instability of the Cauchy horizon inside charged black holes embedded in de Sitter spacetime for all values of the physical parameters. The relevant modes which maintain the instability, in the regime which was previously considered stable, originate as outgoing modes near to the black hole event horizon. This same mechanism is also relevant for the instability of Cauchy horizons in other proposed counter-examples of strong cosmic censorship.
Generic spherically symmetric self-similar collapse results in strong naked-singularity formation. In this paper we are concerned with particle creation during a naked-singularity formation in spherically symmetric self-similar collapse without specifying the collapsing matter. In the generic case, the power of particle emission is found to be proportional to the inverse square of the remaining time to the Cauchy horizon (CH). The constant of proportion can be arbitrarily large in the limit to marginally naked singularity. Therefore, the unbounded power is especially striking in the case that …
In this paper we analyse the stability of black hole Cauchy horizons arising in a class of 2d dilaton gravity models. It is shown that due to the characteristic asymptotic Rindler form of the metric of these models, time dependent gravitational perturbations generated in the external region do not necessarily blow-up when propagated along the Cauchy horizon. There exists, in fact, a region of nonzero measure in the space of the parameters characterizing the solutions such that both instability and mass inflation are avoided. This is a new result concerning asymptotically flat space-times, not …
We investigate how a Type IV future singularity can be included in the cosmological evolution of a well-known exponential model of inflation. In order to achieve this we use a two scalar field model, in the context of which the incorporation of the Type IV singularity can be consistently done. In the context of the exponential model we study, when a Type IV singularity is included in the evolution, an instability occurs in the slow-roll parameters, and in particular on the second slow-roll parameter. Particularly, if we abandon the slow-roll condition for both the scalars we shall use, then th…
In classical General Relativity, the values of fields on spacetime are uniquely determined by their values at an initial time within the domain of dependence of this initial data surface. However, it may occur that the spacetime under consideration extends beyond this domain of dependence, and fields, therefore, are not entirely determined by their initial data. This occurs, for example, in the well-known (maximally) extended Reissner-Nordström or Reissner-Nordström-deSitter (RNdS) spacetimes. The boundary of the region determined by the initial data is called the "Cauchy horizon." It is locat…
This talk describes some recent results [16] regarding the problem of uniqueness in the large (also known as strong cosmic censorship) for the initial value problem in general relativity. In order to isolate the essential analytic features of the problem from the complicated setting of gravitational collapse in which it arises, some familiarity with conformal properties of certain celebrated special solutions of the theory of relativity will have to be developed. This talk is an attempt to present precisely these features to an audience of non-specialists, in a way which will hopefully fully m…
After the end of inflation, the inflaton field oscillates around a local minimum of its potential and decays into ordinary matter. These oscillations trigger a resonant instability for cosmological perturbations with wavelengths that exit the Hubble radius close to the end of inflation. In this paper, we study the formation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) at these enhanced scales. We find that the production mechanism can be so efficient that PBHs subsequently dominate the content of the universe and reheating proceeds from their evaporation. Observational constraints on the PBH abundance als…
The running of the Higgs self coupling may lead to numerous phenomena in early universe cosmology. In this paper we introduce a scenario where the Higgs running induces turns in the trajectory passing a region with tachyonic mass, leading to a temporal tachyonic growth in the curvature power spectrum. This effect induced by the Higgs leaves phenomena in the form of primordial black holes and stochastic gravitational waves, where proposed GW observatories will be able to probe in the near future.
Our current measurements of the Standard Model parameters imply that the Higgs field resides in a metastable electroweak vacuum, where the vacuum can decay to a lower ground state, with cataclysmic repercussions for our Universe. According to our observations, no such event has happened in the observable universe, in spite of the various energetic processes that could have triggered it. This work serves as an overview of a method that uses the metastability of the false vacuum during cosmological inflation to provide constraints on the Higgs curvature coupling $ξ$. Considering also the effects…
If you fall into a real astronomical black hole (choosing a supermassive black hole, to make sure that the tidal forces don't get you first), then you will probably meet your fate not at a central singularity, but rather in the exponentially growing, relativistic counter-streaming instability at the inner horizon first pointed out by Poisson & Israel (1990), who called it mass inflation. The chief purpose of this paper is to present a clear exposition of the physical cause and consequence of inflation in spherical, charged black holes. Inflation acts like a particle accelerator in that it acce…
We analytically derive a class of non-singular, static and spherically symmetric topological black hole metrics inF(R)-gravity. These have not a de Sitter core at their centre, as most model in standard General Relativity. We study the geometric properties and the motion of test particles around these objects. Since they have two horizons, the inner being of Cauchy type, we focus on the problem of mass inflation and show that it occurs except when some extremal conditions are met.
The internal structure of a charged spherical black hole is still a topic of debate. In a nonrotating but aspherical gravitational collapse to form a spherical charged black hole, the backscattered gravitational wave tails enter the black hole and are blueshifted at the Cauchy horizon. This has a catastrophic effect if combined with an outflux crossing the Cauchy horizon: a singularity develops at the Cauchy horizon and the effective mass inflates. Recently a numerical study of a massless scalar field in the \RN background suggested that a spacelike singularity may form before the Cauchy horiz…
Models of inflation with antisymmetric tensor studied in the past are plagued with ghost instability even in an unperturbed FRW background. We show that it is possible to avoid ghosts in an unperturbed FRW background by considering the most general kinetic term for antisymmetric tensor field. The kinetic part acquires a new gauge symmetry violating term whose effect on perturbed modes is to prevent the appearance of nondynamical modes, and thus avoid ghosts. For completeness, we perform a check for gradient instability and derive the conditions for perturbations to be free of gradient instabil…
We provide an analytical study of the coupling of short and long wavelength fluctuation modes during the initial phase of reheating in two field models like hybrid inflation. In these models, there is - at linear order in perturbation theory - an instability in the entropy modes of cosmological perturbations which, if not cut off, could lead to curvature fluctuations which exceed the current observational values. Here, we demonstrate that the back-reaction of short wavelength fluctuations is too weak to lead to a truncation of the instability for the long wavelength modes on time scales compar…
Polonyi-Starobinsky (PS) supergravity is the N=1 supergravity model of Starobinsky inflation with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking (after inflation) due to Polonyi superfield, and inflaton belonging to a massive vector supermultiplet. The PS model is used for an explicit realization of the (super-heavy) gravitino dark matter scenario in cosmology. We find a potential instability in this model, and offer a mechanism for its removal by adding a Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term.
The current experimentally measured parameters of the Standard Model (SM) suggest that our Universe lies in a metastable electroweak vacuum, where the Higgs field is prone to vacuum decay to a lower state with catastrophic consequences. Our measurements dictate that such an event has not taken place yet, despite the many different mechanisms that could have triggered it in our past light-cone. The focus of our work has been to calculate the probability of the false vacuum to decay during the period of inflation and use it to constrain the last unknown renormalisable SM parameter $ξ$, which cou…
Hybrid inflation is a two field model where inflation ends due to an instability. In the neighborhood of the instability point, the potential is very flat and the quantum fluctuations dominate over the classical motion of the inflaton and waterfall fields. In this article, we study this regime in the framework of stochastic inflation. We numerically solve the two coupled Langevin equations controlling the evolution of the fields and compute the probability distributions of the total number of e-folds and of the inflation exit point. Then, we discuss the physical consequences of our results, in…
We prove that the anisotropic inflationary background of the Ackerman-Carroll-Wise model, characterized by a fixed-norm vector field, is unstable. We found the instability by explicitly solving the linearized equations for the most general set of perturbations around this background, and by noticing that the solutions diverge close to horizon crossing. This happens because one perturbation becomes a ghost at that moment. A simplified computation, with only the perturbations of the vector field included, shows the same instability, clarifying the origin of the problem. We then discuss several o…
At the end of inflation, the inflaton oscillates at the bottom of its potential and these oscillations trigger a parametric instability for scalar fluctuations with wavelength $λ$ comprised in the instability band $(3H m)^{-1/2} <λ< H^{-1}$, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter and $m$ the curvature of the potential at its minimum. This "metric preheating" instability, which proceeds in the narrow resonance regime, leads to various interesting phenomena such as early structure formation, production of gravitational waves and formation of primordial black holes. In this work we study its fate in t…
