This paper establishes a mathematical proof of the blue-shift instability at the sub-extremal Kerr Cauchy horizon for the linearised vacuum Einstein equations. More precisely, we exhibit conditions on the $s=+2$ Teukolsky field, consisting of suitable integrated upper and lower bounds on the decay along the event horizon, that ensure that the Teukolsky field, with respect to a frame that is regular at the Cauchy horizon, becomes singular. The conditions are in particular satisfied by solutions of the Teukolsky equation arising from generic and compactly supported initial data by the recent work [51] of Ma and Zhang for slowly rotating Kerr.
A classical problem in general relativity is the Cauchy problem for the linearised Einstein equation (the initial value problem for gravitational waves) on a globally hyperbolic vacuum spacetime. A well-known result is that it is uniquely solvable up to gauge solutions, given initial data on a spacelike Cauchy hypersurface. The solution map is an isomorphism between initial data (modulo gauge producing initial data) and solutions (modulo gauge solutions). In the first part of this work, we show that the solution map is actually an isomorphism of locally convex topological vector spaces. This i…
We propose a new geometric framework to address the stability of the Kerr solution to gravitational perturbations in the full sub-extremal range $|a|<M$. Central to our framework is a new formulation of nonlinear gravitational perturbations of Kerr, whose two novel ingredients are the choice of a geometric gauge and non-integrable null frames both tailored to the outgoing principal null geodesics of Kerr. The vacuum Einstein equations for the perturbations are formulated in our gauge as a system of equations for the connection coefficients and curvature components relative to the chosen frames…
We present a new proof of linear stability of the Schwarzschild solution to gravitational perturbations. Our approach employs the system of linearised gravity in the new geometric gauge of \cite{benomio_kerr}, specialised to the $|a|=0$ case. The proof fundamentally relies on the novel structure of the transport equations in the system. Indeed, while exploiting the well-known decoupling of two gauge invariant linearised quantities into spin $\pm 2$ Teukolsky equations, we make enhanced use of the red-shifted transport equations and their stabilising properties to control the gauge dependent pa…
Adapting and extending the techniques developed in recent work with Vasy for the study of the Cauchy horizon of cosmological spacetimes, we obtain boundedness, regularity and decay of linear scalar waves on subextremal Reissner-Nordström and (slowly rotating) Kerr spacetimes, without any symmetry assumptions; in particular, we provide simple microlocal and scattering theoretic proofs of analogous results by Franzen. We show polynomial decay of linear waves relative to a Sobolev space of order slightly above $1/2$. This complements the generic $H^1_{\mathrm{loc}}$ blow-up result of Luk and Oh.
We prove that a large class of smooth solutions $ψ$ to the linear wave equation $\Box_gψ=0$ on subextremal rotating Kerr spacetimes which are regular and decaying along the event horizon become singular at the Cauchy horizon. More precisely, we show that assuming appropriate upper and lower bounds on the energy along the event horizon, the solution has infinite (non-degenerate) energy on any spacelike hypersurfaces intersecting the Cauchy horizon transversally. Extrapolating from known results in the Reissner--Nordström case, the assumed upper and lower bounds required for our theorem are conj…
In this work we examine the Cauchy convergence of both post-Newtonian (T-approximant) and re-summed post-Newtonian (P-approximant) templates for the case of a test-mass orbiting a Kerr black hole along a circular equatorial orbit. The Cauchy criterion demands that the inner product between the $n$ and $n+1$ order approximation approaches unity, as we increase the order of approximation. In previous works, it has been shown that we achieve greater fitting factors and better parameter estimation using the P-approximant templates for both Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. In this work, we show …
We consider solutions of the massless scalar wave equation $\Box_gψ=0$, without symmetry, on fixed subextremal Kerr backgrounds $(\mathcal M, g)$. It follows from previous analyses in the Kerr exterior that for solutions $ψ$ arising from sufficiently regular data on a two ended Cauchy hypersurface, the solution and its derivatives decay suitably fast along the event horizon $\mathcal H^+$. Using the derived decay rate, we show that $ψ$ is in fact uniformly bounded, $|ψ|\leq C$, in the black hole interior up to and including the bifurcate Cauchy horizon $\mathcal C\mathcal H^+$, to which $ψ$ in…
We prove in this paper the linear stability of the celebrated Schwarzschild family of black holes in general relativity: Solutions to the linearisation of the Einstein vacuum equations around a Schwarzschild metric arising from regular initial data remain globally bounded on the black hole exterior and in fact decay to a linearised Kerr metric. We express the equations in a suitable double null gauge. To obtain decay, one must in fact add a residual pure gauge solution which we prove to be itself quantitatively controlled from initial data. Our result a fortiori includes decay statements for g…
We solve the 2+1-dimensional Teukolsky equation numerically for the Weyl scalars $ψ_0$ and $ψ_4$ along a time-like geodesic approaching the Cauchy horizon of a rapidly rotating perturbed Kerr black hole. We find that both the amplitude and frequency of the Weyl scalars agree with the results of linear perturbation analysis. We then model a physical object by a simple damped harmonic oscillator, which is driven by an external force that mimics the tidal force experienced by the infalling object. We use this model to find the total deformation of the object at the Cauchy horizon, and the resonan…
The Cauchy horizon inside a perturbed Kerr black hole develops an instability that transforms it into a curvature singularity. We solve for the linearized Weyl scalars $ψ_0$ and $ψ_4$ and for the curvature scalar $R_{αβγδ}R^{αβγδ}$ along outgoing null rays approaching the Cauchy horizon in the interior of perturbed Kerr black holes using the Teukolsky equation, and compare our results with those found in perturbation analysis. Our results corroborate the previous perturbation analysis result that at its early parts the Cauchy horizon evolves into a deformationally-weak, null, scalar-curvature …
The separability of the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr geometry in horizon-penetrating advanced Eddington-Finkelstein-type coordinates is shown. To this end, the Kerr geometry is described in the Newman-Penrose formalism by a regular Carter tetrad and the Dirac spinors and matrices are defined in a chiral Newman-Penrose dyad representation. Applying Chandrasekhar's mode ansatz, the Dirac equation is separated into radial and angular systems of ordinary differential equations. Asymptotic radial solutions at infinity, the event horizon, and the Cauchy horizon are derived, and the…
We study the Cauchy problem for the wave equation on extreme Kerr backgrounds under axisymmetry. Specifically, we consider regular axisymmetric initial data prescribed on a Cauchy hypersurface S which connects the future event horizon with spacelike or null infinity, and we solve the linear wave equation on the domain of dependence of S. We show that the spacetime integral of an energy-type density is bounded by the initial conserved flux corresponding to the stationary Killing field T, and we derive boundedness of the non-degenerate energy flux corresponding to a globally timelike vector fiel…
We consider the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr geometry in horizon-penetrating advanced Eddington-Finkelstein-type coordinates and derive a functional analytic integral representation of the associated propagator using the spectral theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators, Stone's formula, and quantities arising in the analysis of Chandrasekhar's separation of variables. This integral representation describes the dynamics of Dirac particles outside and across the event horizon, up to the Cauchy horizon. In the derivation, we first write the Dirac equation in Hamiltonian for…
In this paper, we provide an elementary, unified treatment of two distinct blue-shift instabilities for the scalar wave equation on a fixed Kerr black hole background: the celebrated blue-shift at the Cauchy horizon (familiar from the strong cosmic censorship conjecture) and the time-reversed red-shift at the event horizon (relevant in classical scattering theory). Our first theorem concerns the latter and constructs solutions to the wave equation on Kerr spacetimes such that the radiation field along the future event horizon vanishes and the radiation field along future null infinity decays a…
The Cauchy problem for the scalar wave equation in the Kerr geometry is considered, with initial data which is smooth and compactly supported outside the event horizon. A time-independent energy estimate for the outgoing wave is obtained. As an application we estimate the outgoing energy for wave-packet initial data, uniformly as the support of the initial data is shifted to infinity. The main mathematical tool is our previously derived integral representation of the wave propagator.
The Cauchy problem is considered for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry, for smooth initial data with compact support outside the event horizon and bounded angular momentum. We prove that the Dirac wave function decays in L^\infty_loc at least at the rate t^{-5/6}. For generic initial data, this rate of decay is sharp. We derive a formula for the probability p that the Dirac particle escapes to infinity. For various conditions on the initial data, we show that p=0,1 or 0<p<1. The proofs are based on a refined analysis of the Dirac propagator constructed in gr-qc…
We present a novel formulation of the Kerr spacetime solution, based on the Lemaître coordinates. Such an approach allows one to avoid the coordinate singularities of the Boyer-Lindquist metric, thus offering the possibility to explore in some detail the Kerr physics near and beyond the event horizon, adopting the point of view of a freely falling observer, whose adapted tetrad is moreover proven to be Fermi-Walker transported. We use the Lemaître form of the Kerr metric discussing the motion of radial photons close to the Cauchy horizon, also showing that their behaviour fairly agrees with ot…
We characterize Cauchy data sets leading to vacuum space-times with vanishing Mars-Simon tensor. This approach provides an algorithmic procedure to check whether a given initial data set $(Σ,h_{ij},K_{ij})$ evolves into a space-time which is locally isometric to a member of the Kerr-(A)(dS) family.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the scalar wave equation in the Kerr geometry for smooth initial data supported outside the event horizon. We prove that the solutions decay in time in L^\infty_loc. The proof is based on a representation of the solution as an infinite sum over the angular momentum modes, each of which is an integral of the energy variable on the real line. This integral representation involves solutions of the radial and angular ODEs which arise in the separation of variables.
Starting with the Dirac equation in the extreme Kerr metric we derive an integral representation for the propagator of solutions of the Cauchy problem with initial data in the class of smooth compactly supported functions.
Based on various string theoretic constructions, and various string-inspired generalizations thereof, there have been repeated suggestions that the areas of black hole event horizons might be quantized in a quite specific manner, in terms of linear combinations of square roots of positive integers. It is important to realise that there are significant physical constraints on such integer-based proposals when one (somewhat speculatively) attempts to extend them outside their original extremal and supersymmetric framework. Specifically, in their most natural and direct physical interpretations, …
We consider the scalar wave equation in the Kerr geometry for Cauchy data which is smooth and compactly supported outside the event horizon. We derive an integral representation which expresses the solution as a superposition of solutions of the radial and angular ODEs which arise in the separation of variables. In particular, we prove completeness of the solutions of the separated ODEs. This integral representation is a suitable starting point for a detailed analysis of the long-time dynamics of scalar waves in the Kerr geometry.
We show the existence of complete, asymptotically flat Cauchy initial data for the vacuum Einstein field equations, free of trapped surfaces, whose future development must admit a trapped surface. Moreover, the datum is exactly a constant time slice in Minkowski space-time inside and exactly a constant time slice in Kerr space-time outside. The proof makes use of the full strength of Christodoulou's work on the dynamical formation of black holes and Corvino-Schoen's work on the constructions of initial data set.
We show that linear scalar waves are bounded and continuous up to the Cauchy horizon of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter and Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes, and in fact decay exponentially fast to a constant along the Cauchy horizon. We obtain our results by modifying the spacetime beyond the Cauchy horizon in a suitable manner, which puts the wave equation into a framework in which a number of standard as well as more recent microlocal regularity and scattering theory results apply. In particular, the conormal regularity of waves at the Cauchy horizon - which yields the boundedness statement - is a co…
Based on scale critical initial data, we construct smooth asymptotically flat Cauchy initial data for the Einstein vacuum system that does not contain Marginally Outer Trapped Surfaces (MOTS) but whose future evolution contains a trapped region, which itself is bounded by an apparent horizon (a smooth hypersurface foliated by MOTS). Although the long time behaviour of these solutions is unknown, a statement of Kerr Stability would yield a dynamical, scale critical, non-spherically symmetric class of vacuum examples for the conjectures of Weak Cosmic Censorship and Final State. Owing to estimat…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry outside the event horizon. We derive an integral representation for the Dirac propagator involving the solutions of the ODEs which arise in Chandrasekhar's separation of variables. It is proved that for initial data in L^\infty_loc near the event horizon with L^2 decay at infinity, the probability of the Dirac particle to be in any compact region of space tends to zero as t goes to infinity. This means that the Dirac particle must either disappear in the black hole or escape to infinity.
Precise late-time asymptotics of scalar field in the interior of a subextreme Kerr black hole and its application in Strong Cosmic Censorship conjecture
We consider solutions to the linear wave equation in the interior region of extremal Kerr black holes. We show that axisymmetric solutions can be extended continuously beyond the Cauchy horizon and moreover that, if we assume suitably fast polynomial decay in time along the event horizon, their local energy is finite. We also extend these results to non-axisymmetric solutions on slowly rotating extremal Kerr-Newman black holes. These results are the analogues of results obtained in [D. Gajic, Linear waves in the interior of extremal black holes I, arXiv:1509.06568] for extremal Reissner-Nordst…
We present a new approach for setting initial Cauchy data for multiple black hole spacetimes. The method is based upon adopting an initially Kerr-Schild form of the metric. In the case of non-spinning holes, the constraint equations take a simple hierarchical form which is amenable to direct numerical integration. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated by solving analytically the problem of initial data in a perturbed Schwarzschild geometry.
We find that the Kerr-(Newman)-AdS$_4$ black hole will be shadowless if its rotation parameter is larger than a critical value and the shadowless-ness may be related to the appearance of the null hypersurface caustics (NHC) both inside the Cauchy horizon and outside the event horizon for the black hole with the rotation parameter beyond the critical value. Our studies also further confirm that whether an ultraspinning black hole is super-entropic or not is unrelated to the existence of the NHC outside the event horizon.
We first calculate equations of motion for particles in the Kerr-Sen-de Sitter black hole spacetime. Then in the eikonal regime, we analytically obtain the quasi-normal resonant modes of massless neutral scalar field perturbation and find its imaginary part to be characterized by the surface gravity of the near-extremal Kerr-Sen-de Sitter black hole with Cauchy horizon approaching the event horizon. We further show that the Penrose strong cosmic censorship conjecture is thus respected in this spacetime with dilaton scalar field and axion pseudoscalar field.
It has been shown that extremal Kerr black holes can be used as particle accelerators and arbitrarily high energy may be obtained near the event horizon. We study particle collisions near the event horizon (outer horizon) and Cauchy horizon (inner horizon) of a non-extremal Kerr black hole. Firstly, we provide a general proof showing that particles cannot collide with arbitrarily high energies at the outter horizon. Secondly, we show that ultraenergetic collisions can occur near the inner horizon of a Kerr black hole with any spin parameter $a$.

Here we consider static, axially symmetric, rotating and charged Kerr-Sen Dilaton-Axion black hole metric in generalized Boyer-Lindquist coordinates as particle accelerators. We obtain the geodesic motions of particle. We find the effective potential and discuss the circular orbit of a particle. We investigate the center of mass energy of two colliding neutral particles with different rest masses falling from rest at infinity to near the non-extremal horizons (event horizon and Cauchy horizon) and extremal horizon of the Kerr-Sen black hole. Analogous to the Compton process, we discuss the col…
We give an alternative proof of the completeness of the Chandrasekhar ansatz for the Dirac equation in the Kerr-Newman metric. Based on this, we derive an integral representation for smooth compactly supported functions which in turn we use to derive an integral representation for the propagator of solutions of the Cauchy problem with initial data in the above class of functions. As a by-product, we also obtain the propagator for the Dirac equation in the Minkowski space-time in oblate spheroidal coordinates.
We examine properties of the inner and outer horizon thermodynamics of Taub-NUT (Newman-Unti-Tamburino) and Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) black hole (BH) in four dimensional \emph{Lorentzian geometry}. We compare and contrasted these properties with the properties of Reissner Nordstrøm (RN) BH and Kerr BH. We focus on "area product", "entropy product", "irreducible mass product" of the event horizon and Cauchy horizons. Due to mass-dependence, we speculate that these products have no beautiful quantization feature. Nor does it has any universal property. We further observe that the \emph{First law} of B…
We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the blow up part of the John theorem, with $F_p(u)=|u|^{p}$, on the Schwarzschild and Kerr black hole backgrounds. Concerning the case of Schwarzschild, we construct a class of small data, so that the solution blows up along the outgoing null cone, which applies for both $F_p(u)=|u|^{p}$ and the focusing nonlinearity $F_p(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$. The proof suggests that the black hole does not have any essential influence on the formation of singularity, in the region away from the Cauchy horizo…
We consider solutions of the scalar wave equation $\Box_gϕ=0$, without symmetry, on fixed subextremal Reissner-Nordström backgrounds $({\mathcal M}, g)$ with nonvanishing charge. Previously, it has been shown that for $ϕ$ arising from sufficiently regular data on a two ended Cauchy hypersurface, the solution and its derivatives decay suitably fast on the event horizon ${\mathcal H}^+$. Using this, we show here that $ϕ$ is in fact uniformly bounded, $|ϕ| \leq C$, in the black hole interior up to and including the bifurcate Cauchy horizon ${\mathcal C}{\mathcal H}^+$, to which $ϕ$ in fact extend…
We consider the perturbed covariant wave equation $\Box_{g_{M,a}} Ψ= \varepsilon \mathbf{B} Ψ$ on the exterior of a fixed subextremal Kerr spacetime $\left(\mathcal{M},g_{M,a}\right)$. Here $\mathbf{B}$ is a suitably regular first order differential operator respecting the symmetries of Kerr whose coefficients are assumed to decay in space but not in time. We establish integrated decay estimates for solutions of the associated Cauchy problem. The proof adapts the framework introduced by Dafermos--Rodnianski--Shlapentokh-Rothman \cite{DRSR} in the $\varepsilon=0$ case. We combine their estimate…
We present a generalization of previous results regarding the stability under gravitational perturbations of nakedly singular super extreme Kerr spacetime and Kerr black hole interior beyond the Cauchy horizon. To do so we study solutions to the radial and angular Teukolsky's equations with different spin weights, particulary $s=\pm 1$ representing electromagnetic perturbations, $s=\pm 1/2$ representing a perturbation by a Dirac field and $s=0$ representing perturbations by a scalar field. By analizing the properties of radial and angular eigenvalues we prove the existence of an infinite famil…
The Cauchy horizon forming colliding wave solution due to Chandrasekhar and Xanthopoulos (CX) has been generalized by inclusion of the NUT (Newman - Unti - Tamburino) parameter. This is done by transforming the part of the inner horizon region of a Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole into the space of colliding waves. By taking appropriate combination of Killing vectors and analytically extending beyond the Cauchy horizon the time-like hyperbolic sigularities are resolved as well. This provides another example of its kind among the type - D metrics with special emphasis on the role of the NUT parameter…
These lecture notes are concerned with linear stability of the non-extreme Kerr geometry under perturbations of general spin. After a brief review of the Kerr black hole and its symmetries, we describe these symmetries by Killing fields and work out the connection to conservation laws. The Penrose process and superradiance effects are discussed. Decay results on the long-time behavior of Dirac waves are outlined. It is explained schematically how the Maxwell equations and the equations for linearized gravitational waves can be decoupled to obtain the Teukolsky equation. It is shown how the Teu…
Recently it was shown that the area A and the angular momentum J of any apparent horizon on a maximal, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat Cauchy hyper-surface of a vacuum space-time satisfy necessarily the universal inequality A >= 8 pi |J|. We show here that the equality A=8 pi |J| is never attained. As equality is reached (on globally different data sets) when and only when the surface is an extreme Kerr-throat sphere which has zero "temperature", then our statement could be rephrased following this thermodynamic heuristic as the non-existence of apparent horizons of zero temperature. We s…
In a recent seminal paper \cite{D-H-R} of Dafermos, Holzegel and Rodnianski the linear stability of the Schwarzschild family of black hole solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations was established by imposing a double null gauge. In this paper we shall prove that the Schwarzschild family is linearly stable as solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations by imposing instead a generalised wave gauge: all sufficiently regular solutions to the system of equations that result from linearising the Einstein vacuum equations, as expressed in a generalised wave gauge, about a fixed Schwarzschild solutio…
