We consider solutions of the massless scalar wave equation $\Box_gψ=0$, without symmetry, on fixed subextremal Kerr backgrounds $(\mathcal M, g)$. It follows from previous analyses in the Kerr exterior that for solutions $ψ$ arising from sufficiently regular data on a two ended Cauchy hypersurface, the solution and its derivatives decay suitably fast along the event horizon $\mathcal H^+$. Using the derived decay rate, we show that $ψ$ is in fact uniformly bounded, $|ψ|\leq C$, in the black hole interior up to and including the bifurcate Cauchy horizon $\mathcal C\mathcal H^+$, to which $ψ$ in fact extends continuously. In analogy to our previous paper, [30], on boundedness of solutions to the massless scalar wave equation on fixed subextremal Reissner--Nordström backgrounds, the analysis depends on weighted energy estimates, commutation by angular momentum operators and application of Sobolev embedding. In contrast to the Reissner--Nordström case the commutation leads to additional error terms that have to be controlled.
We prove boundedness and polynomial decay statements for solutions of the spin $\pm2$ Teukolsky equation on a Kerr exterior background with parameters satisfying $|a|\ll M$. The bounds are obtained by introducing generalisations of the higher order quantities $P$ and $\underline{P}$ used in our previous work on the linear stability of Schwarzschild. The existence of these quantities in the Schwarzschild case is related to the transformation theory of Chandrasekhar. In a followup paper, we shall extend this result to the general sub-extremal range of parameters $|a|<M$. As in the Schwarzschild …
This paper concludes the study, initiated by the authors in arXiv:2007.07211, of the Teukolsky equation of spin $\pm 1$ and spin $\pm 2$ on Kerr backgrounds in the full subextremal range of parameters $|a| < M$. In our previous arXiv:2007.07211, we obtained uniform-in-frequency estimates for the ODEs governing separable solutions to the Teukolsky equation. In this paper, by adapting the techniques developed by the first author with Dafermos and Rodnianski for scalar waves, we show that our ODE estimates can be upgraded to estimates for the Teukolsky PDE. In particular, we conclude the proof th…
This paper is the first of a series regarding the Teukolsky equation of spin $\pm 1$ and spin $\pm 2$ on Kerr backgrounds in the full subextremal range of parameters $|a|<M$. In the present paper, we study fixed frequency solutions of the transformed system of equations introduced by Dafermos, Holzegel and Rodnianski, obtaining estimates which are uniform in the separation parameters. A corollary of our result, to be laid out in the second paper of the series, is that solutions of the Teukolsky equation on subextremal Kerr arising from regular initial data remain bounded and decay in time. Thi…
Adapting and extending the techniques developed in recent work with Vasy for the study of the Cauchy horizon of cosmological spacetimes, we obtain boundedness, regularity and decay of linear scalar waves on subextremal Reissner-Nordström and (slowly rotating) Kerr spacetimes, without any symmetry assumptions; in particular, we provide simple microlocal and scattering theoretic proofs of analogous results by Franzen. We show polynomial decay of linear waves relative to a Sobolev space of order slightly above $1/2$. This complements the generic $H^1_{\mathrm{loc}}$ blow-up result of Luk and Oh.
We consider Kerr spacetimes with parameters a and M such that |a|<< M, Kerr-Newman spacetimes with parameters |Q|<< M, |a|<< M, and more generally, stationary axisymmetric black hole exterior spacetimes which are sufficiently close to a Schwarzschild metric with parameter M>0, with appropriate geometric assumptions on the plane spanned by the Killing fields. We show uniform boundedness on the exterior for sufficiently regular solutions to the scalar homogeneous wave equation. In particular, the bound holds up to and including the event horizon. No unphysical restrictions are imposed on the beh…
We consider solutions of the scalar wave equation $\Box_gϕ=0$, without symmetry, on fixed subextremal Reissner-Nordström backgrounds $({\mathcal M}, g)$ with nonvanishing charge. Previously, it has been shown that for $ϕ$ arising from sufficiently regular data on a two ended Cauchy hypersurface, the solution and its derivatives decay suitably fast on the event horizon ${\mathcal H}^+$. Using this, we show here that $ϕ$ is in fact uniformly bounded, $|ϕ| \leq C$, in the black hole interior up to and including the bifurcate Cauchy horizon ${\mathcal C}{\mathcal H}^+$, to which $ϕ$ in fact extend…
We give a rigorous definition of the Unruh state in the setting of massless Dirac fields on slowly rotating Kerr spacetimes. In the black hole exterior region, we show that it is asymptotically thermal at Hawking temperature on the past event horizon. Furthermore, we demonstrate that in the union of the exterior and interior regions, the Unruh state is pure and Hadamard. The main ingredients are the Häfner-Nicolas scattering theory, new microlocal estimates for characteristic Cauchy problems and criteria on the level of square-integrable solutions.
Quantitative versions of mode stability type statements for the wave equation on Kerr-Newman black holes are proven for the full sub-extremal range. The mode stability result on the real axis is then applied to prove integrated local energy decay for solutions restricted to a bounded frequency regime. This is an important element of the proof of unrestricted boundedness and decay statements, presented in a forthcoming companion paper.
We study the scattering of monochromatic bosonic plane waves impinging upon a rotating black hole, in the special case that the direction of incidence is aligned with the spin axis. We present accurate numerical results for electromagnetic Kerr scattering cross sections for the first time, and give a unified picture of the Kerr scattering for all massless bosonic fields.
We investigate the structure of the gravitational field generated by a massless particle moving on the horizon of an arbitrary (stationary) black hole. This is done by employing the generalized Kerr-Schild class where we take the null generators of the horizon as the geodetic null vector-field and a scalar function which is concentrated on the horizon.
The hidden Kerr/CFT proposal implies that the massless scalar wave equation in the near-region and low-frequency limit respects a hidden SL(2,R)$\times$SL(2,R) invariance in the Kerr black hole spacetime. We may use this symmetry to determine quasinormal frequencies (QNFs) of the massless scalar wave propagating around the Kerr black hole algebraically. It is shown that QNFs obtained using the hidden conformal symmetry near the horizon correspond approximately to not only those of scalar perturbation around the near-horizon region of a nearly extremal Kerr (NEK) black hole, but also those of n…
We study the global dynamics of free massive scalar fields on general, globally stationary, asymptotically AdS black hole backgrounds with Dirichlet-, Neumann- or Robin- boundary conditions imposed on $ψ$ at infinity. This class includes the regular Kerr-AdS black holes satisfying the Hawking Reall bound $r_+^2 > |a|l$. We establish a suitable criterion for linear stability (in the sense of uniform boundedness) of $ψ$ and demonstrate how the issue of stability can depend on the boundary condition prescribed. In particular, in the slowly rotating Kerr-AdS case, we obtain the existence of linear…
We study the Cauchy problem for the wave equation on extreme Kerr backgrounds under axisymmetry. Specifically, we consider regular axisymmetric initial data prescribed on a Cauchy hypersurface S which connects the future event horizon with spacelike or null infinity, and we solve the linear wave equation on the domain of dependence of S. We show that the spacetime integral of an energy-type density is bounded by the initial conserved flux corresponding to the stationary Killing field T, and we derive boundedness of the non-degenerate energy flux corresponding to a globally timelike vector fiel…
This paper proves the existence of a bounded energy and integrated energy decay for solutions of the massless Vlasov equation in the exterior of a very slowly rotating Kerr spacetime. This combines methods previously developed to prove similar results for the wave equation on the exterior of a very slowly rotating Kerr spacetime with recent work applying the vector-field method to the relativistic Vlasov equation.
The main topic is the Goursat problem at the horizons for the Klein-Gordon equation on the De Sitter-Kerr metric when the angular momentum per unit of mass of the black hole is small. We solve the Goursat problem for fixed angular momentum n of the field (with the restriction that n is non zero in the case of a massless field).

A single master equation is given describing spin $s\le2$ test fields that are gauge- and tetrad-invariant perturbations of the Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime representing a source with mass $M$, gravitomagnetic monopole moment $-\ell$ and gravitomagnetic dipole moment (angular momentum) per unit mass $a$. This equation can be separated into its radial and angular parts. The behavior of the radial functions at infinity and near the horizon is studied and used to examine the influence of $\ell$ on the phenomenon of superradiance, while the angular equation leads to spin-weighted spheroidal harmonic so…
Source-less wave equations are derived for massless scalar, neutrino and electromagnetic perturbations of a radiating Kerr space-time, and the Hawking radiation of massless particles with spin $s =0, 1/2$ and 1 in this geometry is investigated by using a method of the generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. An extra interaction between the spin of particles and the rotation of the hole displays in the thermal spectra of Hawking radiation of massless particles with spin $s = 1/2, 1$ in the evaporating Kerr space-time. The character of such effect is its obvious dependence on different h…
The geodesics of massless particles produced in collisions near a rotating black hole are solved numerically and a Monte Carlo integration of the momentum distribution of the massless particles is performed to calculate the fraction that escape the black hole to infinity. A distribution of in falling dark matter particles, which are assumed to annihilate to massless particles, is considered and an estimate of the emergent flux from the collisions is made. The energy spectrum of the emergent particles is found to contain two Lorentz shifted peaks centred on the mass of the dark matter. The sepa…
We consider planar massless scalar waves impinging upon a Kerr black hole, for general angles of incidence. We compute the absorption cross section via the partial wave approach, and present a gallery of results. In the low-frequency regime, we show that the cross section approaches the horizon area; in the high-frequency regime, we show that the cross section approaches the geodesic capture cross section. In the aligned case, we extend the complex angular momentum method to obtain a `sinc' approximation, which relates the regular high-frequency oscillations in the cross section to the propert…
The massless (or ultrarelativistic) limit of a Schwarzschild black hole with fixed energy was determined long ago in the form of the Aichelburg-Sexl shockwave, but the status of the same limit for a Kerr black hole is less clear. In this paper, we explore the ultrarelativistic limit of Kerr in the class of Kerr-Schild impulsive pp-waves by exploiting a relation between the metric profile and the eikonal phase associated with scattering between a scalar and the source of the metric. This gives a map between candidate metrics and tree-level, 4-point scattering amplitudes. At large distances from…
We develop a definitive physical-space scattering theory for the scalar wave equation on Kerr exterior backgrounds in the general subextremal case |a|<M. In particular, we prove results corresponding to "existence and uniqueness of scattering states" and "asymptotic completeness" and we show moreover that the resulting "scattering matrix" mapping radiation fields on the past horizon and past null infinity to radiation fields on the future horizon and future null infinity is a bounded operator. The latter allows us to give a time-domain theory of superradiant reflection. The boundedness of the …
It is well known that the perturbation equations of massless fields for the Kerr-de Sitter geometry can be written in the form of separable equations. The equations have five definite singularities so that the analysis has been expected to be difficult. We show that these equations can be transformed to Heun's equations, for which we are able to use known technique for the analysis of the solutions. We reproduce results known previously for the Kerr geometry and de Sitter geometry in the confluent limits of the Heun's functions. Our analysis applies can be extended to Kerr-Newman-de Sitter geo…
Aretakis has proved the existence of an instability of a massless scalar field at the horizon of an extreme Kerr or Reissner-Nordstrom black hole: for generic initial data, a transverse derivative of the scalar field at the horizon does not decay, and higher transverse derivatives blow up. We show that a similar instability occurs for linearized gravitational, and electromagnetic, perturbations of an extreme Kerr black hole. We show also that the massless scalar field instability occurs for extreme black hole solutions of a large class of theories in various spacetime dimensions.

The problem of merging in black holes the rotation and a massless scalar field is treated. It is argued in the comment that the Kerr-like and Demianski-like metrics in General Relativity with a free massless scalar field or in the free Brans-Dicke theory, claimed so far in the literature as an application of the Newman-Janis algorithm, prove to be invalid. Finding the missing stationary axisymmetric scalar-vacuum solution(s), containing the Kerr one, is still urgent.
We review our recent work on linear stability for scalar perturbations of Kerr spacetimes, that is to say, boundedness and decay properties for solutions of the scalar wave equation \Box_gψ = 0 on Kerr exterior backgrounds. We begin with the very slowly rotating case |a| \ll M, where first boundedness and then decay has been shown in rapid developments over the last two years, following earlier progress in the Schwarzschild case a = 0. We then turn to the general subextremal range |a| < M, where we give here for the first time the essential elements of a proof of definitive decay bounds for so…
We prove that there are no exponentially growing modes nor modes on the real axis for the Teukolsky equation on Kerr black hole spacetimes, both in the extremal and subextremal case. We also give a quantitative refinement of mode stability. As an immediate application, we show that the transmission and reflection coefficients of the scattering problem are bounded, independently of the specific angular momentum of the black hole, in any compact set of real frequencies excluding zero frequency and the superradiant threshold. While in the subextremal setting these results were known previously, t…
We show that the exact solution of Einstein's equations describing a system of two aligned identical Kerr black holes separated by a massless strut follows straightforwardly from the extended 2-soliton solution possessing equatorial symmetry, and we give its concise analytic representation in terms of physical parameters.
This paper concludes the series begun in [M. Dafermos and I. Rodnianski, Decay for solutions of the wave equation on Kerr exterior spacetimes I-II: the cases |a| << M or axisymmetry, arXiv:1010.5132], providing the complete proof of definitive boundedness and decay results for the scalar wave equation on Kerr backgrounds in the general subextremal |a| < M case without symmetry assumptions. The essential ideas of the proof (together with explicit constructions of the most difficult multiplier currents) have been announced in our survey [M. Dafermos and I. Rodnianski, The black hole stability pr…
The Kerr spacetime in Kaluza-Klein theory describes a rotating black hole in four dimensions from the Kaluza-Klein point of view and involves the signature of an extra dimension that shows up through the appearance of the electric and dilaton charges. In this paper, we study the separability properties of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for geodesics and the associated hidden symmetries in the spacetime of the Kerr-Kaluza-Klein black hole. We show that the complete separation of variables occurs only for massless geodesics, implying the existence of hidden symmetries generated by a second rank co…
It is well-known that there is a geometric correspondence between high-frequency quasi-normal modes (QNMs) and null geodesics (spherical photon orbits). In this paper, we generalize such correspondence to charged scalar field in Kerr-Newman space-time. In our case, the particle and black hole are all charged, so one should consider non-geodesic orbits. Using the WKB approximation, we find that the real part of quasi-normal frequency corresponds to the orbits frequency, the imaginary part of the frequency corresponds to the Lyapunov exponent of these orbits and the eigenvalue of angular equatio…
We consider the Maxwell equation in the exterior of a very slowly rotating Kerr black hole. For this system, we prove the boundedness of a positive definite energy on each hypersurface of constant $t$. We also prove the convergence of each solution to a stationary Coulomb solution. We separate a general solution into the charged, Coulomb part and the uncharged part. Convergence to the Coulomb solutions follows from the fact that the uncharged part satisfies a Morawetz estimate, i.e. that a spatially localised energy density is integrable in time. For the unchanged part, we study both the full …
By employing a pseudo-orthonormal coordinate-free approach, the Dirac equation for particles in the Kerr--Newman spacetime is separated into its radial and angular parts. In the massless case to which a special attention is given, the general Heun-type equations turn into their confluent form. We show how one recovers some results previously obtained in literature, by other means.
In this study, we consider charged massive scalar fields around a Kerr-Sen spacetime. The radial and angular parts of the covariant Klein-Gordon equation are solved in terms of the confluent Heun function. From the exact radial solution, we obtain the Hawking radiation spectrum and discuss its resonant frequencies. The massless case of the resonant frequencies is also examined.
The analytic proof of mode stability of the Kerr black hole was provided by Whiting. In his proof, the construction of a conserved quantity for unstable mode was crucial. We extend the method of the analysis for the Kerr-de Sitter geometry. The perturbation equations of massless fields in the Kerr-de Sitter geometry can be transformed into Heun's equations which have four regular singularities. In this paper we investigate differential and integral transformations of solutions of the equations. Using those we construct a conserved quantity for unstable modes in the Kerr-de Sitter geometry, and…
It is shown that $AdS_4$ Kerr black hole is a solution of simple unfolded differential equations that form a deformation of the zero-curvature description of empty $AdS_4$ space-time. Our construction uses the Killing symmetries of the Kerr solution. All known and some new algebraic properties of the Kerr-Schild solution result from the obtained black hole unfolded system in the coordinate-independent way. Kerr Schild type solutions of free equations in $AdS_4$ for massless fields of any spin, associated to the proposed black hole unfolded system, are found.
The origin of the ultra-high-energy particles we receive on the Earth from the outer space such as EeV cosmic rays and PeV neutrinos remains an enigma. All mechanisms known to us currently make use of electromagnetic interaction to accelerate charged particles. In this paper we propose a mechanism exclusively based on gravity rather than electromagnetic interaction. We show that it is possible to generate ultra-high-energy particles starting from particles with moderate energies using the collisional Penrose process in an overspinning Kerr spacetime transcending the Kerr bound only by an infin…
We first calculate equations of motion for particles in the Kerr-Sen-de Sitter black hole spacetime. Then in the eikonal regime, we analytically obtain the quasi-normal resonant modes of massless neutral scalar field perturbation and find its imaginary part to be characterized by the surface gravity of the near-extremal Kerr-Sen-de Sitter black hole with Cauchy horizon approaching the event horizon. We further show that the Penrose strong cosmic censorship conjecture is thus respected in this spacetime with dilaton scalar field and axion pseudoscalar field.
In the previous work we give a microscopic explanation of the entropy for the BTZ black hole and four-dimensional Kerr black hole based on the massless scalar field theory on the horizon. An essential input is the central charges of those black holes. In this paper, we calculate the central charges for Kerr black holes and Kerr-AdS black holes in diverse dimensions by rewriting the entropy formula in a suggesting way. Then we also give the statistical explanation for the entropy of those black holes based on the scalar field on the horizon which similar to 4D kerr black hole.
An analytic solution for the accretion of ultra-hard perfect fluid onto a moving Kerr-Newman black hole is found. This solution is a generalization of the previously known solution by Petrich, Shapiro and Teukolsky for a Kerr black hole. Our solution is not applicable for an extreme black hole due to violation of the test fluid approximation. We also present a stationary solution for a massless scalar field in the metric of a Kerr-Newman naked singularity.
We explore the celestial holography proposal for non-trivial asymptotically flat backgrounds including the Coulomb field of a static and spinning point charge, their gravitational counterparts described by the Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics, as well as the Aichelburg-Sexl shockwave and spinning shockwave geometries and their electromagnetic cousins. We compute celestial two-point amplitudes on these Kerr-Schild type backgrounds which have the desirable feature, due to the presence of an external source, that they are non-vanishing for general operator positions and are not constrained by the k…
We study the evolution of an evaporating rotating black hole, described by the Kerr metric, which is emitting either solely massless scalar particles or a mixture of massless scalar and nonzero spin particles. Allowing the hole to radiate scalar particles increases the mass loss rate and decreases the angular momentum loss rate relative to a black hole which is radiating nonzero spin particles. The presence of scalar radiation can cause the evaporating hole to asymptotically approach a state which is described by a nonzero value of $a_* \equiv a / M$. This is contrary to the conventional view …
We study scalar test-field perturbations on top of a Kerr--black-bounce background, i.e. a family of rotating regular black holes and/or rotating traversable wormholes that can mimic Kerr black holes. We compute the quasi-normal modes for a massless field in both the regular black holes and wormhole branches, confirming the stability of the former and identifying a set of growing modes that renders the latter unstable. We further compute the superradiance amplification factors, for massless and massive fields, in the regular black hole branch, confirming that these objects superradiate, though…
We investigate null geodesics impinging parallel to the rotation axis of a Kerr-Newman black hole, and show that the absorption cross section for a massless scalar field in the eikonal limit can be described in terms of the photon orbit parameters. We compare our sinc and low-frequency approximations with numerical results, showing that they are in excellent agreement.
It has been proposed that a hidden conformal field theory (CFT) governs the dynamics of low frequency scattering in a general Kerr black hole background. We further investigate this correspondence by mapping higher order corrections to the massless wave equations in a Kerr background to an expansion within the CFT in terms of higher dimension operators. This implies the presence of infinite towers of CFT primary operators with positive conformal dimensions compatible with unitarity. The exact Kerr background softly breaks the conformal symmetry and the scaling dimensions of these operators run…
The physical properties of the Tomimatsu-Sato delta=2 spacetime are analyzed, with emphasis on the issues of the negative mass distribution in this spacetime and the origin of a massless ring singularity which are treated with the aid of an equatorially asymmetric two-body configuration arising within the framework of the analytically extended double-Kerr solution. As a by-product of this analysis it is proved analytically that the Kerr spacetime with negative mass always has a massless naked ring singularity off the symmetry axis accompanied by a region with closed timelike curves, and it is …
