The problem of merging in black holes the rotation and a massless scalar field is treated. It is argued in the comment that the Kerr-like and Demianski-like metrics in General Relativity with a free massless scalar field or in the free Brans-Dicke theory, claimed so far in the literature as an application of the Newman-Janis algorithm, prove to be invalid. Finding the missing stationary axisymmetric scalar-vacuum solution(s), containing the Kerr one, is still urgent.
We compute the renormalized vacuum polarization of a massive scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking state on (2+1)-dimensional rotating, spacelike stretched black hole solutions to Topologically Massive Gravity, surrounded by a Dirichlet mirror that makes the state well defined. The Feynman propagator is written as a mode sum on the complex Riemannian section of the spacetime, and a Hadamard renormalization procedure is implemented by matching to a mode sum on the complex Riemannian section of a rotating Minkowski spacetime. No analytic continuation in the angular momentum parameter is invoked. Se…
We give an analytical formula for the vacuum polarization of a massless minimally coupled scalar field at the horizon of a rotating black hole with subtracted geometry. This is the first example of an exact, analytical result for a four-dimensional rotating black hole.
Mach's principle applied to rotation can be correct if one takes into account the rotation of the quantum vacuum together with the Universe. Whether one can detect the rotation of the vacuum or not depends on its properties. If the vacuum is fully relativistic at all scales, Mach's principle should work and one cannot distinguish the rotation: in the rotating Universe+vacuum, the co-rotating bucket will have a flat surface (not concave). However, if there are "quantum gravity" effects which violate Lorentz invariance at high energy, then the rotation will become observable. This is demonstrate…
We derive conditions for rotating particle detectors to respond in a variety of bounded spacetimes and compare the results with the folklore that particle detectors do not respond in the vacuum state appropriate to their motion. Applications involving possible violations of the second law of thermodynamics are briefly addressed.
A global model of a slowly rotating perfect fluid ball in general relativity is presented. To second order in the rotation parameter, the junction surface is an ellipsoidal cylinder. The interior is given by a limiting case of the Wahlquist solution, and the vacuum region is not asymptotically flat. The impossibility of joining an asymptotically flat vacuum region has been shown in a preceding work.
We analyze the torque applied to a rotating magnetized sphere in a vacuum. It is shown that for the correct determination of one of the torque's component the angular momentum of the electromagnetic field within the body should be taken into account.
We discuss the friction experienced by the body rotating in superfluid liquid at T=0. The effect is analogous to the amplification of electromagnetic radiation and spontaneous emission by the body or black hole rotating in quantum vacuum, first discussed by Zel'dovich and Starobinsky. The friction is caused by the interaction of the part of the liquid, which is rigidly connected with the rotating body and thus represents the comoving detector, with the "Minkowski" vacuum outside the body. The emission process is the quantum tunneling of quasiparticles from the detector to the ergoregion, where…
We consider the definition of the global vacuum state of a quantum scalar field on $n$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space-time as seen by an observer rotating about the polar axis. Since positive (or negative) frequency scalar field modes must have positive (or negative) Klein-Gordon norm respectively, we find that the only sensible choice of positive frequency corresponds to positive frequency as seen by a static observer. This means that the global rotating vacuum is identical to the global nonrotating vacuum. For $n\ge 4$, if the angular velocity of the rotating observer is smaller than the i…
We study the exterior vacuum problem for first and second order stationary and axially symmetric perturbations of static bodies. The boundary conditions and their compatibility for the existence of an asymptotically flat exterior solution are discussed.
We discuss the Starobinskii-Unruh process for the Kerr black hole. We show how this effect is related to the theory of squeezed states. We then consider a simple model for a highly relativistic rotating star and show that the Starobinskii-Unruh effect is absent.
Using the Hamilton-Jacobi method of quantum tunneling and complex path integration, we study Hawking radiation of scalar particles from rotating black strings. We discuss tunneling of both charged and uncharged scalar particles from the event horizons. For this purpose, we use the Klein-Gordon equation and find the tunneling probability of outging scalar particles. The procedure gives Hawking temperature for rotating charged black strings as well.
Response of a circularly rotating Unrh-DeWitt detector to the Minkowski vacuum is investigated. What the detector observes depends on the surface (three volume) to define it by the Hamiltonian. Detectors in the past literature were defined on a surface of a constant Minkowski time, and this is the reason why rotating detectors investigated so far resister particles. No particle is detected by a detector defined by the Hamiltonian on a surface normal to the detector's orbit, in agreement with the global analysis of vacua. A detector with drift motion superposed on the linear acceleration is als…
We revisit the problem of the rotating generalization of the Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour solution of the minimal Einstein-scalar theory proving that the two previously proposed solutions do not satisfy the equations of motion. We also derive several new spinning solutions with the scalar charge, which are endowed with oblate deformation.
Hawking radiation of uncharged and charged scalars from accelerating and rotating black holes is studied. We calculate the tunneling probabilities of these particles from the rotation and acceleration horizons of these black holes. Using the tunneling method we recover the correct Hawking temperature as well.
We analyse vacuum decay in rotating BTZ black hole spacetimes with the thin wall approximation. Possible parameter regions for the vacuum decay are clarified. We find that the nucleation rate is dominated by the bounce solution with the static shell configuration. The nucleation rate of the static shell decreases with the mass of the initial black hole. For a larger/smaller value of the initial black hole, the nucleation rate can be smaller/larger than that of the Coleman De Luccia vacuum decay in the pure AdS spacetime. Through the vacuum decay, the black hole gains its mass and loses the hor…
In this work we consider a quantum analog of Newton's bucket experiment in a flat spacetime: we take an Unruh-DeWitt detector in interaction with a real massless scalar field. We calculate the detector's excitation rate when it is uniformly rotating around some fixed point and the field is prepared in the Minkowski vacuum and also when the detector is inertial and the field is in the Trocheries-Takeno vacuum state. These results are compared and the relations with a quantum analog of Mach's principle are discussed.
Quantum field theory on rotating black hole spacetimes is plagued with technical difficulties. Here, we describe a general method to renormalize and compute the vacuum polarization of a quantum field in the Hartle-Hawking state on rotating black holes. We exemplify the technique with a massive scalar field on the warped AdS3 black hole solution to topologically massive gravity, a deformation of (2+1)-dimensional Einstein gravity. We use a "quasi-Euclidean" technique, which generalizes the Euclidean techniques used for static spacetimes, and we subtract the divergences by matching to a sum over…
We examine charged slowly rotating perfect fluids in the presence of a cosmological constant. The asymptotic form of the vacuum solutions to the linearised Einstein-Maxwell field equations is found and the possibility of matching this vacuum to the slow rotating García metric is considered. We show that, contrary to the case of zero cosmological constant, this García metric can be matched to an asymptotically de Sitter vacuum in the slow rotation limit. We conclude the García metric may potentially be suitable for describing a charged isolated rotating body in a cosmological background.
Teleparallel geometry utilizes Weitzenböck connection which has nontrivial torsion but no curvature and does not directly follow from the metric like Levi-Civita connection. In extended teleparallel theories, for instance in $f(T)$ or scalar-torsion gravity, the connection must obey its antisymmetric field equations. So far only a few analytic solutions were known. In this note we solve the $f(T,ϕ)$ gravity antisymmetric vacuum field equations for a generic rotating tetrad ansatz in Weyl canonical coordinates, and find the corresponding spin connection coefficients. By a coordinate transformat…
We develop a general perturbative analysis on vacuum spacetimes which can be constructed by generating manifolds of revolution around a curve, and apply it to the Schwarzschild metric. The following different perturbations are carried out separately: 1) Non-rotating 2-spheres are added along a plane curve slightly deviated from the ``Schwarzschild line''; 2) General non-rotating topological 2-spheres are added along the ``Schwarzschild line'' 3) Slow-rotating 2-spheres are added along the ``Schwarzschild line''. For (1), we obtain the first order vacuum solution and show that no higher order s…
We investigate whether self-maintained vacuum traversible wormhole can exist described by stationary but nonstatic metric. We consider metric being the sum of static spherically symmetric one and a small nondiagonal component which describes rotation sufficiently slow to be taken into account in the linear approximation. We study semiclassical Einstein equations for this metric with vacuum expectation value of stress-energy of physical fields as the source. In suggestion that the static traversible wormhole solution exists we reveal possible azimuthal angle dependence of angular velocity of th…
Stationary, axisymmetric and slowly rotating vacuum spacetimes in the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity are studied, and shown that, for any given spherical static vacuum solution of the HL theory (of any model, including the ones with an additional U(1) symmetry), there always exists a corresponding slowly rotating, stationary and axisymmetric vacuum solution, which reduces to the former, when the rotation is switched off. The rotation is universal and only implicitly depends on the models of the HL theory and their coupling constants through the spherical seed solution. As a result, all asymptoti…
We carry out a Lie group analysis of the Sachs equations for a time-dependent axisymmetric non-rotating space-time in which the Ricci tensor vanishes. These equations, which are the first two members of the set of Newman-Penrose equations, define the characteristic initial-value problem for the space-time. We find a particular form for the initial data such that these equations admit a Lie symmetry, and so defines a geometrically special class of such spacetimes. These should additionally be of particular physical interest because of this special geometric feature.
This is the sequel to the first paper of the series, where we have discussed the Hawking radiation from five-dimensional rotating black holes for spin 0, 1/2 and 1 brane fields in the low frequency regime. We consider the emission of a brane localized scalar field from rotating black holes in general space-time dimensions without relying on the low frequency expansions.
We initiated the program to look for new and simple forms for the five-dimensional rotating squashed black holes by solving directly the equation of motion. In a recent paper, the metric ansatz of dimensional reduction along the fifth spatial dimension was used to obtain a new but rather simple form for the five-dimensional rotating uncharged black hole solution with squashed horizons via solving the vacuum Einstein field equations. In this work, we continue to seek for another new but relatively simple form for the neutral rotating squashed black hole solution by using a different metric ansa…
It is interesting to note that most black holes are born very slowly rotating. We investigate scalarization of slowly rotating black holes in the Einstein-scalar-Chern-Simons (EsCS) theory. In the slow rotation approximation, the CS term takes a linear form of rotation parameter $a$ which determines the tachyonic instability. The tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes represents the onset of spontaneous scalarization. It is shown that the slowly rotating black holes are unstable against a spherically symmetric scalar-mode perturbation for positive coupling $α$, whereas these bla…
The effect of electromagnetic radiation birefringence in the field of a relativistically rotating pulsar or magnetar within the framework of vacuum nonlinear electrodynamic
We investigate the stability of higher dimensional rotating black holes against scalar perturbations. In particular, we make a thorough numerical and analytical analysis of six-dimensional black holes, not only in the low rotation regime but in the high rotation regime as well. Our results suggest that higher dimensional Kerr black holes are stable against scalar perturbations, even in the ultra-spinning regime.
In this paper, we study the rotational wormhole and scalar perturbation under the spacetime. We found the Schrödinger like equation and consider the asymptotic solutions for the special cases.
Introducing a new form of scalar potential $V(ϕ)$, we derive a proper form of the rotating black hole solution in three-dimensional Einstein gravity with nonminimally coupled scalar field and find that the first law of thermodynamics of this new rotating hairy black hole can be protected, where the scalar field parameter $B$ is constrained to relate to the black hole size. We also disclose the Hawking-Page phase transition between this rotating hairy black holes and the pure thermal radiation. Moreover, we study phase transitions between this rotating hairy black hole and rotating BTZ black ho…
It is proven that the Wahlquist perfect fluid space-time cannot be smoothly joined to an exterior asymptotically flat vacuum region. The proof uses a power series expansion in the angular velocity, to a precision of the second order. In this approximation, the Wahlquist metric is a special case of the rotating Whittaker space-time. The exterior vacuum domain is treated in a like manner. We compute the conditions of matching at the possible boundary surface in both the interior and the vacuum domain. The conditions for matching the induced metrics and the extrinsic curvatures are mutually contr…
Motivated by novel results in the theory of wave dynamics in black-hole spacetimes, we analyze the dynamics of a massive scalar field surrounding a rapidly rotating Kerr black hole. In particular, we report on the existence of stationary (infinitely long-lived) regular field configurations in the background of maximally rotating black holes. The effective height of these scalar "clouds" above the central black hole is determined analytically. Our results support the possible existence of stationary scalar field dark matter distributions surrounding rapidly rotating black holes.
In this work we check the validity of the no scalar hair theorem in charged axisymmetric stationary black holes for a wide class of scalar tensor theories.
We investigate the wave dynamics of a charged massive scalar field propagating in a maximally rotating (extremal) linear dilaton black hole geometry. We prove the existence of a discrete and infinite family of resonances describing non-decaying stationary scalar configurations (clouds) enclosing these rapidly rotating black holes. The results obtained signal the potential stationary scalar field distributions (dark matter) around the extremal linear dilaton black holes. In particular, we analytically compute the effective heights of those clouds above the center of the black hole.
The problem of constructing global models describing isolated axially symmetric rotating bodies in equilibrium is analyzed. It is claimed that, whenever the global spacetime is constructed by giving boundary data on the limiting surface of the body and integrating Einstein's equations both inside and ouside the body, the problem becomes overdetermined. Similarly, when the spacetime describing the interior of the body is explicitly given, the problem of finding the exterior vacuum solution becomes overdetermined. We discuss in detail the procedure to be followed in order to construct the exterio…
We discuss rotating wormholes in general relativity with a scalar field with negative kinetic energy. To solve the problem, we use the assumption about slow rotation. The role of a small dimensionless parameter plays the ratio of the linear velocity of rotation of the wormhole's throat and the velocity of light. We construct the rotating wormhole solution in the second order approximation with respect to the small parameter. The analysis shows that the asymptotical mass of the rotating wormhole is greater than that of the non-rotating one, and the NEC violation in the rotating wormhole spaceti…
The theory of f(R)-gravity is one of the theories of modified Einstein gravity. The vacuum solution, on the other hand, of the field equation is the solution for black hole geometry. We establish here an asymptotically flat rotating black hole solution in an f(R)-gravity. This essentially leads to the modified solution to the Kerr black hole. This solution exhibits the change in fundamental properties of the black hole and its geometry. It particularly shows that radii of marginally stable and bound orbits and black hole event horizon increase compared to those in Einstein gravity, depending o…
Scalar field contribution to entropy is studied in arbitrary D dimensional one parameter rotating spacetime by semiclassical method. By introducing the zenithal angle dependent cutoff parameter, the generalized area law is derived. The non-rotating limit can be taken smoothly and it yields known results. The derived area law is then applied to the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in (2+1) dimension and the Kerr-Newman black hole in (3+1) dimension. The generalized area law is reconfirmed by the Euclidean path integral method for the quantized scalar field. The scalar field mass cont…
We study scalar perturbations of the five-dimensional rotating black holes and find an exact solution giving exact description of the Hawking radiation. Mathematically, the full solution for this s-wave mode is expressed in terms of the prolate spheroidal wave function with complex parameters. By using the spheroidal joining factor, we write the corresponding boundary condition and greybody factors. We also check that the exact result reproduces the low frequency limit of the greybody factor and shows good agreement with the known numerical results.
We study scalarization of slowly rotating black holes in the Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (GB)-Chern-Simons (CS) theory. In the slow rotation approximation of $a\ll1$ with rotation parameter $a$, the GB term is given by a term for Schwarzschild black hole, whereas the CS term takes a linear term of $a$. The tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes represents the onset of spontaneous scalarization. We use the (2+1)-dimensional hyperboloidal foliation method to show the tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes by considering the time evolution of a spherically symmetric…
We consider rotating wormhole solutions supported by a complex phantom scalar field with a quartic self-interaction, where the phantom field induces the rotation of the spacetime. The solutions are regular and asymptotically flat. A subset of solutions describing static but not spherically symmetric wormholes is also obtained.
We study the Hawking radiation (HR) of scalar and Dirac particles (fermions) emitted from a rotating scalar hair black hole (RSHBH) within the context of three dimensional ($3D$) Einstein gravity using non-minimally coupled scalar field theory. Amalgamating the quantum tunneling approach with the Wentzel--Kramers--Brillouin (WKB) approximation, we obtain the tunneling rates of the outgoing particles across the event horizon. Inserting the resultant tunneling rates into the Boltzmann formula, we then obtain the Hawking temperature ($T_{H}$) of the $3D$ RSHBH.
We discuss a Chern-Simons (CS) scalar field around a rapidly rotating black hole in dynamical CS modified gravity. The CS correction can be obtained perturbatively by considering the Kerr spacetime to be the background. We obtain the CS scalar field solution around the black hole analytically and numerically, assuming a stationary and axisymmetric configuration. The scalar field diverges on the inner horizon when we impose the boundary condition that the scalar field is regular on the outer horizon and vanishes at infinity. Therefore, the CS scalar field becomes problematic on the inner horizo…
We present an analytic study of the mode-coupling phenomena for a scalar field propagating on a rotating Kerr background. Physically, this phenomena is caused by the dragging of reference frames, due to the black-hole (or star's) rotation. We find that different modes become mixed during the evolution and the asymptotic late-time tails are dominated by a mode which, in general, has an angular distribution different from the original one. We show that a rotating Kerr black hole becomes `bald' slower than a spherically-symmetric Schwarzschild black hole.
Pulsars are thought to be highly magnetized rotating neutron stars accelerating charged particles along magnetic field lines in their magnetosphere and visible as pulsed emission from the radio wavelength up to high energy X-rays and gamma-rays. Being highly compact objects with compactness close to $Ξ= R_s/R\approx0.5$, where $\Rs=2\,G\,M/c^2$ is the Schwarzschild radius and $\{M,R\}$ the mass and radius of the neutron star, general-relativistic effects become important close to their surface. This is especially true for the polar caps where radio emission is supposed to emanate from, leading…
In the context of a special class of tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity for which the target-space metric admits an isometry under which the theory is invariant, we present rotating vacuum solutions, namely with no matter fields. These objects behave like nontopological solitons, whose primary stability is due to the conserved charge arising from the global symmetry. We consider theories with two and three scalar fields, different Gauss curvatures and quartic interaction coefficients. As it occurs for boson stars, their angular momentum is quantized.
We construct hairy black hole solutions in a particular set of tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity for which the target-space admits a Killing vector field with periodic flow that is furthermore the generator of a one-parameter family of point transformations which leave the whole theory invariant. As for black holes with scalar hair in general relativity, these must be rotating objects as the scalarization arises from superradiant instability. We analyze the most fundamental rotating solutions (winding number $m=1$) in five theories which differ from each other by the value of the Gauss c…
We study the absorption probability and Hawking radiation of the scalar field in the rotating Gödel black hole in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity. We find that Gödel parameter $j$ imprints in the greybody factor and Hawking radiation. It plays a different role from the angular momentum of the black hole in the Hawking radiation and super-radiance. These information can help us know more about rotating Gödel black holes in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.
We consider stationary, cylindrically symmetric configurations in general relativity and formulate necessary conditions for the existence of rotating cylindrical wormholes. It is shown that in a comoving reference frame the rotational part of the gravitational field is separated from its static part and forms an effective stress-energy tensor with exotic properties, which favors the existence of wormhole throats. Exact vacuum and scalar-vacuum solutions (with a massless scalar) are considered as examples, and it turns out that even vacuum solutions can be of wormhole nature. However, solutions…
We study the emission of scalars into the bulk from a higher-dimensional rotating black hole. We obtain an analytic solution to the field equation by employing matching techniques on expressions valid in the near-horizon and far-field regimes. Both analytic and numerical results for the absorption probability, in the low-energy and low-angular momentum limit, are derived and found to be in excellent agreement. We also compute the energy emission rate, and show that the brane-to-bulk ratio of the energy emission rates for scalar fields remains always larger than unity in the aforementioned regi…
We compute numerically the absorption cross section of planar massless scalar waves impinging upon a Kerr-Newman black hole with different incidence angles. We investigate the influence of the black hole electric charge and angular momentum in the absorption spectrum, comparing our numerical computations with analytical results for the limits of high and low frequency.
A numerical study of the evolution of a massless scalar field in the background of rotating black holes is presented. First, solutions to the wave equation are obtained for slowly rotating black holes. In this approximation, the background geometry is treated as a perturbed Schwarzschild spacetime with the angular momentum per unit mass playing the role of a perturbative parameter. To first order in the angular momentum of the black hole, the scalar wave equation yields two coupled one-dimensional evolution equations for a function representing the scalar field in the Schwarzschild background …
Thermal radiation of scalar particles and Dirac fermions from squashed charged rotating five-dimensional black holes is considered. To obtain temperature of the black holes we use the tunnelling method. In case of scalar particles we make use of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. To consider tunnelling of fermions the Dirac equation was investigated. The examination shows that radial parts of the action for scalar particles and fermions in quasi-classical limit in the vicinity of horizon are almost the same and as a consequence it gives rise to the identical expressions for the temperature in both …
We obtain all the stationary vacua of de Sitter space by classifying the inequivalent timelike isometries of the de Sitter group. Besides the static vacuum, de Sitter space also admits a family of rotating vacua, which we use to obtain Kerr-de Sitter solutions in various dimensions. By writing the metric in a coordinate system adapted to the rotating Hamiltonian, we show that empty de Sitter space admits not only an observer-dependent horizon but also an observer-dependent ergosphere.
