Quantum field theory on rotating black hole spacetimes is plagued with technical difficulties. Here, we describe a general method to renormalize and compute the vacuum polarization of a quantum field in the Hartle-Hawking state on rotating black holes. We exemplify the technique with a massive scalar field on the warped AdS3 black hole solution to topologically massive gravity, a deformation of (2+1)-dimensional Einstein gravity. We use a "quasi-Euclidean" technique, which generalizes the Euclidean techniques used for static spacetimes, and we subtract the divergences by matching to a sum over mode solutions on Minkowski spacetime. This allows us, for the first time, to have a general method to compute the renormalized vacuum polarization (and, more importantly, the renormalized stress-energy tensor), for a given quantum state, on a rotating black hole, such as the physically relevant case of the Kerr black hole in four dimensions.
We calculate the renormalized vacuum polarization and stress tensor for a massless, arbitrarily coupled scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state on the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole threaded by an infinte straight cosmic string. This calculation relies on a generalized Heine identity for non-integer Legendre functions which we derive without using specific properties of the Legendre functions themselves.
We show that the pathology which afflicts the Hartle-Hawking vacuum on the Kerr black hole space-time can be regarded as due to rigid rotation of the state with the horizon in the sense that when the region outside the speed-of-light surface is removed by introducing a mirror, there is a state with the defining features of the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. In addition, we show that when the field is in this state, the expectation value of the energy-momentum stress tensor measured by an observer close to the horizon and rigidly rotating with it corresponds to that of a thermal distribution at the Haw…
This paper is devoted to the construction of the renormalized quantum stress energy tensor $\left<T_μ^ν\right>_{ren}$ for a massive scalar field with arbitrary coupling to the gravitational field of a pointlike global monopole, using the Schwinger-DeWitt approximation, up to second order in the inverse mass $μ$ of the field. The given stress energy tensor is constructed by functional differentiation with respect to the metric tensor of the one-loop effective action of sufficiently massive scalar field, such that the Compton length of the quantum field is much less than the characteristic radiu…
We compute the renormalized vacuum polarization of a massive scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking state on (2+1)-dimensional rotating, spacelike stretched black hole solutions to Topologically Massive Gravity, surrounded by a Dirichlet mirror that makes the state well defined. The Feynman propagator is written as a mode sum on the complex Riemannian section of the spacetime, and a Hadamard renormalization procedure is implemented by matching to a mode sum on the complex Riemannian section of a rotating Minkowski spacetime. No analytic continuation in the angular momentum parameter is invoked. Se…
We obtain an analytic expression for the vacuum polarization on the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole threaded by an infinite cosmic string. This calculation relies on a generalized Heine identity for Legendre functions which we derive without using specific properties of the Legendre functions themselves.
Building on general formulas obtained from the approximate renormalized effective action, the approximate stress-energy tensor of the quantized massive scalar field with arbitrary curvature coupling in the spacetime of charged black hole being a solution of coupled equations of nonlinear electrodynamics and general relativity is constructed and analysed. It is shown that in a few limiting cases, the analytical expressions relating obtained tensor to the general renormalized stress-energy tensor evaluated in the geometry of the Reissner-Nordström black hole could be derived. A detailed numerica…
We explicitly compare the structure of the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a massless scalar field in a (1+1) curved spacetime as obtained by two different strategies: normal-mode construction of the field operator and one-loop effective action. We pay special attention to where and how it is encoded the information related to the choice of vacuum state in both formalisms. By establishing a clear translation map between both procedures, we show that these two potentially different RSET are actually equal, when using vacuum-state choices related by this map. One specific aim of the …
A global model of a slowly rotating perfect fluid ball in general relativity is presented. To second order in the rotation parameter, the junction surface is an ellipsoidal cylinder. The interior is given by a limiting case of the Wahlquist solution, and the vacuum region is not asymptotically flat. The impossibility of joining an asymptotically flat vacuum region has been shown in a preceding work.
We consider the definition of the global vacuum state of a quantum scalar field on $n$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space-time as seen by an observer rotating about the polar axis. Since positive (or negative) frequency scalar field modes must have positive (or negative) Klein-Gordon norm respectively, we find that the only sensible choice of positive frequency corresponds to positive frequency as seen by a static observer. This means that the global rotating vacuum is identical to the global nonrotating vacuum. For $n\ge 4$, if the angular velocity of the rotating observer is smaller than the i…
We compute the renormalized expectation value of the square of a quantum scalar field on a Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole in which the temperatures of the event and cosmological horizons are equal (`lukewarm' black hole). Our numerical calculations for a thermal state at the same temperature as the two horizons indicate that this renormalized expectation value is regular on both the event and cosmological horizons. We are able to show analytically, using an approximation for the field modes near the horizons, that this is indeed the case.
We study the exterior vacuum problem for first and second order stationary and axially symmetric perturbations of static bodies. The boundary conditions and their compatibility for the existence of an asymptotically flat exterior solution are discussed.
Response of a circularly rotating Unrh-DeWitt detector to the Minkowski vacuum is investigated. What the detector observes depends on the surface (three volume) to define it by the Hamiltonian. Detectors in the past literature were defined on a surface of a constant Minkowski time, and this is the reason why rotating detectors investigated so far resister particles. No particle is detected by a detector defined by the Hamiltonian on a surface normal to the detector's orbit, in agreement with the global analysis of vacua. A detector with drift motion superposed on the linear acceleration is als…
We consider a real massive free quantum scalar field with arbitrary curvature coupling on $n$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space-time. We use Hadamard renormalization to find the vacuum expectation values of the quadratic field fluctuations and the stress-energy tensor, presenting explicit results for $n=2$ to $n=11$ inclusive.
In this work, we investigated the electroweak vacuum instability during or after inflation. In the inflationary Universe, i.e., de Sitter space, the vacuum field fluctuations $\left< {δϕ}^{ 2 } \right>$ enlarge in proportion to the Hubble scale $H^{2}$. Therefore, the large inflationary vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs field $\left< {δϕ}^{ 2 } \right>$ are potentially catastrophic to trigger the vacuum transition to the negative-energy Planck-scale vacuum state and cause an immediate collapse of the Universe. However, the vacuum field fluctuations $\left< {δϕ}^{ 2 } \right>$, i.e., the vacuum …
The cosmological Higgs vacuum stability has been an attractive research subject and it is crucial to accurately follow the development of the Higgs fluctuations. In this work, we thoroughly investigate how the vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs field affect the stability of the electroweak vacuum in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. Adopting adiabatic (WKB) approximation or adiabatic regularization methods, we clearly show that vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs field in the FLRW background depend on the curvature and also masses of the Higgs or other scalar fields. The Higgs …

We propose a suitable vacuum state for a quantized Dirac field interacting with a classical scalar field in a Friedman-Robertson-Walker-Lemaitre spacetime. This state is constructed from an extended version of the adiabatic expansion of the associated Fourier modes of the field. We compute the full renormalized stress-energy tensor. For any given initial time, this instantaneous vacuum can always be chosen to have vanishing Fourier modes for the renormalized stress-energy tensor. We check the consistency of the solution for several inflationary models.
The current vacuum energy density observed as dark energy ${ ρ}_{ \rm dark }\simeq 2.5\times10^{-47}\ {\rm GeV^{4}}$ is unacceptably small compared with any other scales. Therefore, we encounter serious fine-tuning problem and theoretical difficulty to derive the dark energy. However, the theoretically attractive scenario has been proposed and discussed in literature: In terms of the renormalization-group (RG) running of the cosmological constant, the vacuum energy density can be expressed as ${ ρ}_{ \rm vacuum }\simeq m^{2}H^{2}$ where $m$ is the mass of the scalar field and rather dynamical …
We examine charged slowly rotating perfect fluids in the presence of a cosmological constant. The asymptotic form of the vacuum solutions to the linearised Einstein-Maxwell field equations is found and the possibility of matching this vacuum to the slow rotating García metric is considered. We show that, contrary to the case of zero cosmological constant, this García metric can be matched to an asymptotically de Sitter vacuum in the slow rotation limit. We conclude the García metric may potentially be suitable for describing a charged isolated rotating body in a cosmological background.
The possibility of the cosmic string creation by the vacuum fluctuations of quantum fields in the self-consistent semiclassical theory of gravity is discussed. We use the approximate method for obtaining vacuum expectation value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of conformally invariant quantum fields in static cylindrically symmetric spacetimes. We have obtained the particular solutions of Einstein equations for the different boundary conditions at the cylinder symmetry axis.
We develop a general perturbative analysis on vacuum spacetimes which can be constructed by generating manifolds of revolution around a curve, and apply it to the Schwarzschild metric. The following different perturbations are carried out separately: 1) Non-rotating 2-spheres are added along a plane curve slightly deviated from the ``Schwarzschild line''; 2) General non-rotating topological 2-spheres are added along the ``Schwarzschild line'' 3) Slow-rotating 2-spheres are added along the ``Schwarzschild line''. For (1), we obtain the first order vacuum solution and show that no higher order s…
We investigate whether self-maintained vacuum traversible wormhole can exist described by stationary but nonstatic metric. We consider metric being the sum of static spherically symmetric one and a small nondiagonal component which describes rotation sufficiently slow to be taken into account in the linear approximation. We study semiclassical Einstein equations for this metric with vacuum expectation value of stress-energy of physical fields as the source. In suggestion that the static traversible wormhole solution exists we reveal possible azimuthal angle dependence of angular velocity of th…
The renormalized Feynman propagator for a scalar field in the background of a cosmic dispiration (a disclination plus a screw dislocation) is derived, opening a window to investigate vacuum polarization effects around a cosmic string with dislocation, as well as in the bulk of an elastic solid carrying a dispiration. The use of the propagator is illustrated by computing vacuum fluctuations. In particular it is shown that the dispiration polarizes the vacuum giving rise to an energy momentum tensor which, as seen from a local inertial frame, presents non vanishing off-diagonal components. Such …

We carry out a Lie group analysis of the Sachs equations for a time-dependent axisymmetric non-rotating space-time in which the Ricci tensor vanishes. These equations, which are the first two members of the set of Newman-Penrose equations, define the characteristic initial-value problem for the space-time. We find a particular form for the initial data such that these equations admit a Lie symmetry, and so defines a geometrically special class of such spacetimes. These should additionally be of particular physical interest because of this special geometric feature.
We consider the problem of the renormalization of the vacuum polarization in a symmetry space-time with axial but not spherical symmetry, Schwarzschild space-time threaded by an infinite straight cosmic string. Unlike previous calculations, our framework to compute the renormalized vacuum polarization does not rely on special properties of Legendre functions, but rather has been developed in a way that we expect to be applicable to Kerr space-time.
We give an analytical formula for the vacuum polarization of a massless minimally coupled scalar field at the horizon of a rotating black hole with subtracted geometry. This is the first example of an exact, analytical result for a four-dimensional rotating black hole.
The effect of electromagnetic radiation birefringence in the field of a relativistically rotating pulsar or magnetar within the framework of vacuum nonlinear electrodynamic
We compute the renormalized vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole backgrounds. Mixed (Robin) boundary conditions are applied on the spacetime boundary. We consider black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology as well as spherical event horizons. The quantum scalar field is in the Hartle-Hawking state, and we employ Euclidean methods to calculate the renormalized expectation values. Far from the black hole, we find that the vacuum polarization approaches a finite limit, which is the same for all boundary conditio…
We investigate the effects of light-cone fluctuations over the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of a real massless minimally coupled scalar field defined in a ($d+1$)-dimensional flat space-time with topology ${\cal R}\times {\cal S}^d$. For modeling the influence of light-cone fluctuations over the quantum field, we consider a random Klein-Gordon equation. We study the case of centered Gaussian processes. After taking into account all the realizations of the random processes, we present the correction caused by random fluctuations. The averaged renormalized va…
We continue the presentation of the pragmatic mode-sum regularization (PMR) method for computing the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET). We show in detail how to employ the $t$-splitting variant of the method, which was first presented for $\left\langleϕ^{2}\right\rangle_{ren}$, to compute the RSET in a stationary, asymptotically-flat background. This variant of the PMR method was recently used to compute the RSET for an evaporating spinning black hole. As an example for regularization, we demonstrate here the computation of the RSET for a minimally-coupled, massless scalar field on Schw…
We calculate the renormalized vacuum average of the energy-momentum tensor of massless left-handed spinor field in the pointlike global monopole spacetime using point-separation approach. The general structure of the vacuum average of the energy-momentum tensor is obtained and expressed in terms of $<T^0_0>^{ren}$ component, explicit form of which is analyzed in great details for arbitrary solid angle deficit.
It is proven that the Wahlquist perfect fluid space-time cannot be smoothly joined to an exterior asymptotically flat vacuum region. The proof uses a power series expansion in the angular velocity, to a precision of the second order. In this approximation, the Wahlquist metric is a special case of the rotating Whittaker space-time. The exterior vacuum domain is treated in a like manner. We compute the conditions of matching at the possible boundary surface in both the interior and the vacuum domain. The conditions for matching the induced metrics and the extrinsic curvatures are mutually contr…
By considering Hadamard vacuum states, we first construct the two-point functions associated with Stueckelberg massive electromagnetism in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Then, from the general formalism developed in [A. Belokogne and A. Folacci, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{93}, 044063 (2016)], we obtain an exact analytical expression for the vacuum expectation value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the massive vector field propagating in these maximally symmetric spacetimes.
The problem of constructing global models describing isolated axially symmetric rotating bodies in equilibrium is analyzed. It is claimed that, whenever the global spacetime is constructed by giving boundary data on the limiting surface of the body and integrating Einstein's equations both inside and ouside the body, the problem becomes overdetermined. Similarly, when the spacetime describing the interior of the body is explicitly given, the problem of finding the exterior vacuum solution becomes overdetermined. We discuss in detail the procedure to be followed in order to construct the exterio…
We analyze the torque applied to a rotating magnetized sphere in a vacuum. It is shown that for the correct determination of one of the torque's component the angular momentum of the electromagnetic field within the body should be taken into account.

We analyse vacuum decay in rotating BTZ black hole spacetimes with the thin wall approximation. Possible parameter regions for the vacuum decay are clarified. We find that the nucleation rate is dominated by the bounce solution with the static shell configuration. The nucleation rate of the static shell decreases with the mass of the initial black hole. For a larger/smaller value of the initial black hole, the nucleation rate can be smaller/larger than that of the Coleman De Luccia vacuum decay in the pure AdS spacetime. Through the vacuum decay, the black hole gains its mass and loses the hor…
In this work we consider a quantum analog of Newton's bucket experiment in a flat spacetime: we take an Unruh-DeWitt detector in interaction with a real massless scalar field. We calculate the detector's excitation rate when it is uniformly rotating around some fixed point and the field is prepared in the Minkowski vacuum and also when the detector is inertial and the field is in the Trocheries-Takeno vacuum state. These results are compared and the relations with a quantum analog of Mach's principle are discussed.
We compute the renormalized expectation value of the square of a massless, conformally coupled, quantum scalar field on the brane of a higher-dimensional black hole. Working in the AADD brane-world scenario, the extra dimensions are flat and we assume that the compactification radius is large compared with the size of the black hole. The four-dimensional on-brane metric corresponds to a slice through a higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole geometry and depends on the number of bulk space-time dimensions. The quantum scalar field is in a thermal state at the Hawking temperatur…
In this paper we analyse the vacuum polarization effects associated with a massless scalar field in the higher-dimensional spacetime. Specifically we calculate the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the square of the field, $<Φ^2(x)>_{Ren}$, induced by a global monopole in the "braneworld" scenario. In this context the global monopole lives in a $n=3$ dimensional sub-manifold of the higher-dimensional (bulk) spacetime, and our Universe is represented by a transverse flat $(p-1)-$ dimensional brane. In order to develop this analysis we calculate the general Green function admitting that t…
Bondi's approach to the construction of a coordinate system is used with a different choice of gauge, in accordance with which the radial coordinate r is an affine parameter, to cast the metric tensor into a form suitable for use with the Newman-Penrose null tetrad formalism. The choice of tetrad has the result that the equations and all the functions that appear in them are real-valued. A group classification of the Sachs equations in this gauge leads to a unique expression for the first of the five independent elements $Ψ_0$ of the Weyl spinor, and to the corresponding exact solutions for tw…
The studies in general relativity of rotating finite objects in equilibrium have usually focused on the case when they are truly isolated, this is, the models to describe finite objects are embedded in an asymptotically flat exterior vacuum. Known results ensure the uniqueness of the vacuum exterior field by using the boundary data for the exterior field given at the surface of the object plus the decay of the exterior field at infinity. The final aim of the present work is to study the consequences on the interior models by changing the boundary condition at infinity to one accounting for the…
The renormalized mean value of the quantum Lagrangian and the corresponding components of the Energy-Momentum tensor for massive spinor fields coupled to an arbitrary gravitational field configuration having cylindrical symmetry are analytically evaluated using the Schwinger-DeWitt approximation, up to second order in the inverse mass value. The general results are employed to explicitly derive compact analytical expressions for the quantum mean Lagrangian and Energy- Momentum tensor in the particular background of the Black-String space-time.
We consider a quantum field on a lukewarm black hole spacetime. We introduce a new uniform approximation to the radial equation, constructed using an extension of Green-Liouville asymptotics. We then use this new approximation to construct the renormalized vacuum polarization in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. Previous calculations of the vacuum polarization rely on the WKB approximation to the solutions of the radial equation, however the nonuniformity of the WKB approximations obscures the results of these calculations near both horizons. The use of our new approximation eliminates these obscurit…
This thesis is concerned with the development of a general method to compute renormalised local observables for quantum matter fields, in a given quantum state, on a rotating black hole spacetime. The rotating black hole may be surrounded by a Dirichlet mirror, if necessary, such that a regular, isometry-invariant vacuum state can be defined. We focus on the case of a massive scalar field on a (2+1)-dimensional rotating black hole, but the method can be extended to other types of matter fields and higher-dimensional rotating black holes. The Feynman propagator of the matter field in the regula…
Teleparallel geometry utilizes Weitzenböck connection which has nontrivial torsion but no curvature and does not directly follow from the metric like Levi-Civita connection. In extended teleparallel theories, for instance in $f(T)$ or scalar-torsion gravity, the connection must obey its antisymmetric field equations. So far only a few analytic solutions were known. In this note we solve the $f(T,ϕ)$ gravity antisymmetric vacuum field equations for a generic rotating tetrad ansatz in Weyl canonical coordinates, and find the corresponding spin connection coefficients. By a coordinate transformat…
Mach's principle applied to rotation can be correct if one takes into account the rotation of the quantum vacuum together with the Universe. Whether one can detect the rotation of the vacuum or not depends on its properties. If the vacuum is fully relativistic at all scales, Mach's principle should work and one cannot distinguish the rotation: in the rotating Universe+vacuum, the co-rotating bucket will have a flat surface (not concave). However, if there are "quantum gravity" effects which violate Lorentz invariance at high energy, then the rotation will become observable. This is demonstrate…
We show that there is no superradiance for the Dirac field in the rotating BTZ black hole if the field vanishes at infinity. Then we outline the calculation of the expression for the renormalized energy-momentum tensor, the effective action as well as the heat kernel for the Dirac field for the BTZ black hole. Finally we point out how to construct the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state for the real scalar field in the non-rotating BTZ black hole in two and three dimensions.
Stationary, axisymmetric and slowly rotating vacuum spacetimes in the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity are studied, and shown that, for any given spherical static vacuum solution of the HL theory (of any model, including the ones with an additional U(1) symmetry), there always exists a corresponding slowly rotating, stationary and axisymmetric vacuum solution, which reduces to the former, when the rotation is switched off. The rotation is universal and only implicitly depends on the models of the HL theory and their coupling constants through the spherical seed solution. As a result, all asymptoti…
In this paper we analyse the vacuum polarization effects associated with a massless scalar field in higher-dimensional global monopole spacetime. Specifically we calculate the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the field square, $<Φ^2(x)>_{Ren}$, induced by a global monopole. Two different spacetimes will be considered: $i)$ In the first, the global monopole lives in whole universe, and $ii)$ in the second, the global monopole lives in a $n=3$ dimensional sub-manifold of the higher-dimensional (bulk) spacetime in the "braneworld" scenario. In order to develop these analysis we calculate …
A class of solutions of the gravitational field equations describing vacuum spacetimes outside rotating cylindrical sources is presented. A subclass of these solutions corresponds to the exterior gravitational fields of rotating cylindrical systems that emit gravitational radiation. The properties of these rotating gravitational wave spacetimes are investigated. In particular, we discuss the energy density of these waves using the gravitational stress-energy tensor.
We discuss the friction experienced by the body rotating in superfluid liquid at T=0. The effect is analogous to the amplification of electromagnetic radiation and spontaneous emission by the body or black hole rotating in quantum vacuum, first discussed by Zel'dovich and Starobinsky. The friction is caused by the interaction of the part of the liquid, which is rigidly connected with the rotating body and thus represents the comoving detector, with the "Minkowski" vacuum outside the body. The emission process is the quantum tunneling of quasiparticles from the detector to the ergoregion, where…
