We study the Cauchy problem for the wave equation on extreme Kerr backgrounds under axisymmetry. Specifically, we consider regular axisymmetric initial data prescribed on a Cauchy hypersurface S which connects the future event horizon with spacelike or null infinity, and we solve the linear wave equation on the domain of dependence of S. We show that the spacetime integral of an energy-type density is bounded by the initial conserved flux corresponding to the stationary Killing field T, and we derive boundedness of the non-degenerate energy flux corresponding to a globally timelike vector field N. Finally, we prove uniform pointwise boundedness and power-law decay for solutions to the wave equation. Our estimates hold up to and including the event horizon. We remark that these results do not yield decay for the derivatives transversal to the horizon, and this is suggestive that these derivatives may satisfy instability properties analogous to those shown in our previous work on extreme Reissner-Nordstrom backgrounds.
We construct a one-parameter family of stationary axisymmetric and asymptotically flat spacetimes solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system bifurcating from the Kerr spacetime. The constructed solutions have the property that the spatial support of the matter is a finite, axisymmetric shell located away from the black hole. Our proof is mostly based on the analysis of the set of trapped timelike geodesics for stationary axisymmetric spacetimes close to Kerr, where the geodesic flow is not necessarily integrable. Moreover, the analysis of the Einstein field equations relies on the modified Carter…
We analyse the expression for the mass of a stationary axisymmetric configuration in general relativity obtained in our previous work [1]. From the generality of our formula and its incompatibility with the corresponding expression in Kerr space-time we argue that a stationary equilibrium distribution of a real matter cannot be a source of the Kerr metric.
The structural properties of geodesic currents in an ambient Kerr background is studied from an analytical point of view. The geodesics in the congruence correspond to charged particles that carry energy and angular momentum from the black hole through the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. It is shown that the resulting magnetosphere naturally satisfies the Znajek regularity condition. Particular attention is paid here to the energy extracted by matter currents rather than by electromagnetic Poynting fluxes.
A lower bound for the ADM mass is established in terms of angular momentum, charge, and horizon area in the context of maximal, axisymmetric initial data for the Einstein-Maxwell equations which satisfy the weak energy condition. If, on the horizon, the given data agree to a certain extent with the associated model Kerr-Newman data, then the inequality reduces to the conjectured Penrose inequality with angular momentum and charge. In addition, a rigidity statement is also proven whereby equality is achieved if and only if the data set arises from the canonical slice of a Kerr-Newman spacetime.
We provide a geometric framework for the construction of non-vacuum black holes whose metrics are stationary and axisymmetric. Under suitable assumptions we show that the Einstein equations reduce to an Einstein-harmonic map type system and analyze the compatibility of the resulting equations. This framework will be fundamental to our forthcoming construction of metric-stationary axisymmetric bifurcations of Kerr solving the Einstein--Klein--Gordon system, and as such, we include specializations of all of our formulas to the case of a time-periodic massive scalar field.
We construct one-parameter families of solutions to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations bifurcating off the Kerr solution such that the underlying family of spacetimes are each an asymptotically flat, stationary, axisymmetric, black hole spacetime, and such that the corresponding scalar fields are non-zero and time-periodic. An immediate corollary is that for these Klein--Gordon masses, the Kerr family is not asymptotically stable as a solution to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations.
The shadow of a black hole can be one of the strong observational evidences for stationary black holes. If we see shadows at the center of galaxies, we would say whether the observed compact objects are black holes. In this paper, we consider a formula for the contour of a shadow in an asymptotically-flat, stationary, and axisymmetric black hole spacetime. We show that the formula is useful for obtaining the contour of the shadow of several black holes such as the Kerr-Newman black hole and rotating regular black holes. Using the formula, we can obtain new examples of the contour of the shadow…
We present a semi-analytical approach to the interaction of two (originally) Kerr black holes through a head-on collision process. An expression for the rate of emission of gravitational radiation is derived from an exact solution to the Einstein's field equations. The total amount of gravitational radiation emitted in the process is calculated and compared to current numerical investigations. We find that the spin-spin interaction increases the emission of gravitational wave energy up to 0.2% of the total rest mass. We discuss also the possibility of spin-exchange between the holes.
We prove that for any vacuum, maximal, asymptotically flat, axisymmetric initial data for Einstein equations close to extreme Kerr data, the inequality $\sqrt{J} \leq m$ is satisfied, where $m$ and $J$ are the total mass and angular momentum of the data. The proof consists in showing that extreme Kerr is a local minimum of the mass.
One of the effects of noncommutative coordinate operators is that the delta-function connected to the quantum mechanical amplitude between states sharp to the position operator gets smeared by a Gaussian distribution. Although this is not the full account of effects of noncommutativity, this effect is in particular important, as it removes the point singularities of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström solutions. In this context, it seems to be of some importance to probe also into ring-like singularities which appear in the Kerr case. In particular, starting with an anisotropic energy-momentu…

Ernst's solution generating technique for adding electromagnetic charge to axisymmetric space-times in general relativity is generalised in presence of the cosmological constant. Ernst equations for complex potentials are found and they are traced back to an affective dual complex dynamical system, whose symmetries are studied. In particular this method is able to generate charged, asymptotically (A)dS black holes from their uncharged version: as an example, it is shown explicitly how to pass from the Kerr-(A)dS to the Kerr-Newman-(A)dS metric. A new solution describing a magnetic universe in …
We determine the class of axisymmetric and asymptotically flat black-hole spacetimes for which the test Klein-Gordon and Hamilton-Jacobi equations allow for the separation of variables. The known Kerr, Kerr-Newman, Kerr-Sen and some other black-hole metrics in various theories of gravity are within the class of spacetimes described here. It is shown that although the black-hole metric in the Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet theory does not allow for the separation of variables (at least in the considered coordinates), for a number of applications it can be effectively approximated by a metric wit…
Recently, there have been efforts to solve Einstein's equation in the context of a conformal compactification of space-time. Of particular importance in this regard are the so called CMC-foliations, characterized by spatial hyperboloidal hypersurfaces with a constant extrinsic mean curvature K. However, although of interest for general space-times, CMC-slices are known explicitly only for the spherically symmetric Schwarzschild metric. This work is devoted to numerically determining axisymmetric CMC-slices within the Kerr solution. We construct such slices outside the black hole horizon throug…
We discuss universal properties of axisymmetric and stationary configurations consisting of a central black hole and surrounding matter in Einstein-Maxwell theory. In particular, we find that certain physical equations and inequalities (involving angular momentum, electric charge and horizon area) are not restricted to the Kerr-Newman solution but can be generalized to the situation where the black hole is distorted by an arbitrary axisymmetric and stationary surrounding matter distribution.
In this work we explore the consequences of considering from the very beginning the stationary and axisymmetric properties of the Kerr black hole as one attempts to derive this solution through the Kerr-Schild ansatz. The first consequence is kinematical and is based on a new stationary and axisymmetric version of the Kerr theorem that yields to the precise shear-free and geodesic null congruence of flat spacetime characterizing the Kerr solution. A straightforward advantage of this strategy is that now the parameter $a$ appears naturally as associated to the conserved angular momentum of the …
This is the second of a series of papers investigating the oscillation properties of relativistic, non-selfgravitating tori orbiting around black holes. Extending the work done in a Schwarzschild background, we here consider the axisymmetric oscillations of vertically integrated tori in a Kerr spacetime. The tori are modeled with a number of different non-Keplerian distributions of specific angular momentum and we discuss how the oscillation properties depend on these and on the rotation of the central black hole. We first consider a local analysis to highlight the relations between acoustic a…
The electrovac axisymmetric extreme isolated horizon/CFT correspondence is considered. By expansion techniques under the Bondi-like coordinates, it is proved that the near horizon geometry of electrovac axisymmetric extreme isolated horizon is unique. Furthermore, explicit coordinate transformation between the Bondi-like coordinates and the Poincare-type coordinates for the near horizon metric of the extreme Kerr-Newmann spacetime is found. Based on these analyses and the thermodynamics of the isolated horizon, then, the Kerr/CFT correspondence is generalized to nonstationary extreme black hol…
The motion of test particles in stationary axisymmetric gravitational fields is generally nonintegrable unless a nontrivial constant of motion, in addition to energy and angular momentum along the symmetry axis, exists. The Carter constant in Kerr-de Sitter spacetime is the only example known to date. Proposed astrophysical tests of the black-hole no-hair theorem have often involved integrable gravitational fields more general than the Kerr family, but the existence of such fields has been a matter of debate. To elucidate this problem, we treat its Newtonian analogue by systematically searchin…
We prove that extreme Kerr initial data set is a unique absolute minimum of the total mass in a (physically relevant) class of vacuum, maximal, asymptotically flat, axisymmetric data for Einstein equations with fixed angular momentum. These data represent non-stationary, axially symmetric, black holes. As a consequence, we obtain that any data in this class satisfy the inequality $\sqrt{J} \leq m$, where $m$ and $J$ are the total mass and angular momentum of the spacetime.
We present a family of solutions for the axisymmetric Plebanski-Demianski metric and other corresponding reduced metrics. We also present the black hole characteristics using a new set of parameters for Kerr-Newman metric.
It is proven that for smooth initial data with compact support outside the event horizon, the solution of every azimuthal mode of the Teukolsky equation for general spin decays pointwise in time.
We obtain remarkably simple integral bounds for axially symmetric linear perturbations for the extreme Kerr black hole in terms of conserved energies. From these estimates we deduce pointwise bounds for the perturbations outside the horizon.
We consider force-free magnetospheres around the extreme Kerr black hole. In this case there is no known exact analytic solution to force free electrodynamics which is stationary, axisymmetric and magnetically-dominated. However, any stationary, axisymmetric and regular force-free magnetosphere in extreme Kerr black hole approaches the same attractor solution in the near-horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) limit with null electromagnetic field. We show that by moving away from the attractor solution in the NHEK region, one finds magnetically-dominated solutions in the extreme Kerr black hole with fini…
In our program of studying numerically the so-called Bondi-Hoyle accretion in the fully relativistic regime, we present here first results concerning the evolution of matter accreting supersonically onto a rotating (Kerr) black hole. These computations generalize previous results where the non-rotating (Schwarzschild) case was extensively considered. We parametrize our initial data by the asymptotic conditions for the fluid and explore the dependence of the solution on the angular momentum of the black hole. Towards quantifying the robustness of our numerical results, we use two different geom…
This second part of the series treats spin $\pm2$ components (or extreme components), that satisfy the Teukolsky master equation, of the linearized gravity in the exterior of a slowly rotating Kerr black hole. For each of these two components, after performing a first-order differential operator once and twice, the resulting equations together with the Teukolsky master equation itself constitute a linear spin-weighted wave system. An energy and Morawetz estimate for spin $\pm 2$ components is proved by treating this system. This is a first step in a joint work (Andersson et al. in Stability fo…
We apply the method of Bäcklund transformations to generate a new hierarchy of exact solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations starting from the extreme Kerr near-horizon geometry. Solutions with extreme Kerr near-horizon asymptotics containing an arbitrary number of free parameters are included.
We solve a class of boundary value problems for the stationary axisymmetric Einstein equations corresponding to a disk of dust rotating uniformly around a central black hole. The solutions are given explicitly in terms of theta functions on a family of hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces of genus 4. In the absence of a disk, they reduce to the Kerr black hole. In the absence of a black hole, they reduce to the Neugebauer-Meinel disk.
Non-extremal isolated horizons embeddable in 4-dimensional spacetimes satisfying the vacuum Einstein equations with cosmological constant are studied. The horizons are assumed to be stationary to the second order. The Weyl tensor at the horizon is assumed to be of the Petrov type D. The corresponding equation on the intrinsic horizon geometry is solved in the axisymmetric case. The family of the solutions is $2$-dimensional, it is parametrized by the area and the angular momentum. The embeddability in the Kerr - de Sitter, the Kerr - anti de Sitter and the Near extremal Horizon spacetimes obta…
We prove that, in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman black hole geometry, the Dirac equation has no normalizable, time-periodic solutions. A key tool is Chandrasekhar's separation of the Dirac equation in this geometry. A similar non-existence theorem is established in a more general class of stationary, axisymmetric metrics in which the Dirac equation is known to be separable. These results indicate that, in contrast with the classical situation of massive particle orbits, a quantum mechanical Dirac particle must either disappear into the black hole or escape to infinity.
Using black-hole inequalities and the increase of the horizon's areas, we show that there are arbitrarily small electro-vacuum perturbations of the standard initial data of the extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black-hole that, (by contradiction), cannot decay in time into any extreme Kerr-Newman black-hole. This proves the expectation that the family of extreme Kerr-Newman black-holes is unstable. It remains of course to be seen whether the whole family of charged black-holes, including those extremes, is stable or not.
In this paper we consider bound state solutions, i.e., normalizable time-periodic solutions of the Dirac equation in the exterior region of an extreme Kerr black hole with mass $M$ and angular momentum $J$. It is shown that for each azimuthal quantum number $k$ and for particular values of $J$ the Dirac equation has a bound state solution, and that the energy of this Dirac particle is uniquely determined by $ω= -\frac{kM}{2J}$. Moreover, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of bound states in the extreme Kerr-Newman geometry, and we give an explicit expression for th…
We study axisymmetric solution to the conformally invariant wave equation on a Kerr background by means of numerical and analytical methods. Our main focus is on the behaviour of the solutions near spacelike infinity, which is appropriately represented as a cylinder. Earlier studies of the wave equation on a Schwarzschild background have revealed important details about the regularity of the corresponding solutions. It was found that, on the cylinder, the solutions generically develop logarithmic singularities at infinitely many orders. Moreover, these singularities also `spread' to future nul…
We study conformal symmetries on the horizon of a general stationary and axisymmetric black hole. We find that there exist physically reasonable boundary conditions that uniquely determine a set of symmetry generators, which form one copy of the Virasoro algebra. For extremal black holes, Cardy's formula reproduces exactly the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We revisit the spectrum of linear axisymmetric gravitational perturbations of the (near-)extreme Kerr black hole. Our aim is to characterise those perturbations that are responsible for the deviations away from extremality, and to contrast them with the linearized perturbations treated in the Newman-Penrose formalism. For the near horizon region of the (near-)extreme Kerr solution, i.e. the (near-)NHEK background, we provide a complete characterisation of axisymmetric modes. This involves an infinite tower of propagating modes together with the much subtler low-lying mode sectors that contain …
We present a formula that relates the variations of the area of extreme throat initial data with the variation of an appropriate defined mass functional. From this expression we deduce that the first variation, with fixed angular momentum, of the area is zero and the second variation is positive definite evaluated at the extreme Kerr throat initial data. This indicates that the area of the extreme Kerr throat initial data is a minimum among this class of data. And hence the area of generic throat initial data is bounded from below by the angular momentum. Also, this result strongly suggests th…
We demonstrate the existence of equilibrium states in the limiting cases of the double-Kerr solution when one of the constituents is an extreme object. In the `extreme-subextreme' case the negative mass of one of the constituents is required for the balance, whereas in the `extreme-superextreme' equilibrium configurations both Kerr particles may have positive masses. We also show that the well-known relation |J|=M^2 between the mass and angular momentum in the extreme single Kerr solution ceases to be a characteristic property of the extreme Kerr particle in a binary system.
Recently it was shown that the area A and the angular momentum J of any apparent horizon on a maximal, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat Cauchy hyper-surface of a vacuum space-time satisfy necessarily the universal inequality A >= 8 pi |J|. We show here that the equality A=8 pi |J| is never attained. As equality is reached (on globally different data sets) when and only when the surface is an extreme Kerr-throat sphere which has zero "temperature", then our statement could be rephrased following this thermodynamic heuristic as the non-existence of apparent horizons of zero temperature. We s…
Stationary, axisymmetric, vacuum, solutions of Einstein's equations are obtained as critical points of the total mass among all axisymmetric and $(t,ϕ)$ symmetric initial data with fixed angular momentum. In this variational principle the mass is written as a positive definite integral over a spacelike hypersurface. It is also proved that if absolute minimum exists then it is equal to the absolute minimum of the mass among all maximal, axisymmetric, vacuum, initial data with fixed angular momentum. Arguments are given to support the conjecture that this minimum exists and is the extreme Kerr i…
We prove the existence of a family of initial data for Einstein equations which represent small deformations of the extreme Kerr black hole initial data. The data in this family have the same asymptotic geometry as extreme Kerr. In particular, the deformations preserve the angular momentum and the area of the cylindrical end.
We present integral estimates for the shift and induced metric in the maximal isothermal gauge, corresponding to linear axially symmetric gravitational perturbations over the Minkowski and extreme Kerr metric. These bounds are a step towards finding pointwise bounds for the perturbations. In particular the presented estimate for the shift includes the horizon for the extreme Kerr case.
The field equation with the cosmological constant term is derived and the energy of the general 4-dimensional stationary axisymmetric spacetime is studied in the context of the hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR). We find that, by means of the integral form of the constraints equations of the formalism naturally without any restriction on the metric parameters, the energy for the asymptotically flat/de Sitter/Anti-de Sitter stationary spacetimes in the Boyer-Lindquist coordinate can be expressed as $E=\frac{1}{8π}\int_S dθdϕ(sinθ\sqrt{g_{θθ}}+\sq…
The conjectured magnetized Kerr/CFT correspondence states that the quantum theory of gravity in the near horizon of extreme Kerr black holes immersed by the magnetic field, Near Horizon Extreme Magnetized Kerr black holes, is holographic dual to a two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory. To obtain Near Horizon Extreme Magnetized Kerr geometry, the extreme limit of the magnetized Kerr metric is taken so, $ a=M $ and then continued by transforming the coordinates to have a warped and twisted product of $ \textrm{AdS}_2 \times \textrm{S}^2 $, and also with the Near Horizon Extreme Kerr metr…
Axially symmetric stationary metrics governed by the Einstein-Euler equations for slowly rotating perfect fluids have been constructed in an arbitrarily large bounded domain containing the support of the mass density. However the problem of global prolongation of the metric is still open. On the other hand the so called matter-vacuum matching problem, particularly as the source problem for the Kerr metric, has been discussed by several authors. This can be regarded as the approach to the same open problem in the opposite direction. We give a remark on this open problem.
Geometrical properties of the extreme Kerr black holes in the topological sectors of nonextreme and extreme configurations are studied. We find that the Euler characteristic plays an essential role to distinguish these two kinds of extreme black holes. The relationship between the geometrical properties and the intrinsic thermodynamics are investigated.
Starting with the Dirac equation in the extreme Kerr metric we derive an integral representation for the propagator of solutions of the Cauchy problem with initial data in the class of smooth compactly supported functions.
