Recently it was shown that the area A and the angular momentum J of any apparent horizon on a maximal, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat Cauchy hyper-surface of a vacuum space-time satisfy necessarily the universal inequality A >= 8 pi |J|. We show here that the equality A=8 pi |J| is never attained. As equality is reached (on globally different data sets) when and only when the surface is an extreme Kerr-throat sphere which has zero "temperature", then our statement could be rephrased following this thermodynamic heuristic as the non-existence of apparent horizons of zero temperature. We study too the global structure of data sets having surfaces with A=8 pi |J|. This lead us to prove the rigidity of the extreme Kerr-throats and to investigate the important phenomenon of formation of extreme Kerr-throats along sequences of data sets.
We study dynamics of a test charged particle moving in a weakly charged extreme Kerr throat. Dynamical equations of the particle motion are solved in quadratures. We show explicitly that the Killing tensor of the Kerr spacetime becomes reducible in the extreme Kerr throat geometry. Special types of motion of particles and light are discussed.
We revisit to investigate shadows cast by Kerr-like wormholes. The boundary of the shadow is determined by unstable circular photon orbits. We find that, in certain parameter regions, the orbit is located at the throat of the Kerr-like wormhole, which was not considered in the literature. In these cases, the existence of the throat alters the shape of the shadow significantly, and makes it possible for us to differentiate it from that of a Kerr black hole.
The properties of Kerr black holes (BHs)and naked singularities (NSs) are investigated by using stationary observers and their limiting frequencies. We introduce the concept of NS Killing throats and bottlenecks for slowly spinning NSs to describe the frequency of stationary observers. In particular, we show the frequency on the horizon can be used to point out a connection between BHs and NSs and to interpret the horizon in terms of frequencies. The analysis is performed on the equatorial plane of the ergoregion.
Motivated by the Kerr/CFT conjecture, we explore solutions of vacuum general relativity whose asymptotic behavior agrees with that of the extremal Kerr throat, sometimes called the Near-Horizon Extreme Kerr (NHEK) geometry. We argue that all such solutions are diffeomorphic to the NHEK geometry itself. The logic proceeds in two steps. We first argue that certain charges must vanish at all times for any solution with NHEK asymptotics. We then analyze these charges in detail for linearized solutions. Though one can choose the relevant charges to vanish at any initial time, these charges are not …
We study the near horizon limit of a four dimensional extreme rotating black hole. The limiting metric is a completely nonsingular vacuum solution, with an enhanced symmetry group SL(2,R) x U(1). We show that many of the properties of this solution are similar to the AdS_2 x S^2 geometry arising in the near horizon limit of extreme charged black holes. In particular, the boundary at infinity is a timelike surface. This suggests the possibility of a dual quantum mechanical description. A five dimensional generalization is also discussed.
We present a formula that relates the variations of the area of extreme throat initial data with the variation of an appropriate defined mass functional. From this expression we deduce that the first variation, with fixed angular momentum, of the area is zero and the second variation is positive definite evaluated at the extreme Kerr throat initial data. This indicates that the area of the extreme Kerr throat initial data is a minimum among this class of data. And hence the area of generic throat initial data is bounded from below by the angular momentum. Also, this result strongly suggests th…
We study the properties of black holes and naked singularities by considering stationary observers and light surfaces in Kerr spacetimes. We reconsider the notion of Killing horizons from a special perspective by exploring the entire family of Kerr metrics. To this end, we introduce the concepts of extended plane, Killing throats and bottlenecks for weak (slowly spinning) naked singularities. Killing bottlenecks (or horizon remnants in analogy with the corresponding definition of throats in black holes) are restrictions of the Killing throats appearing in special classes of slowly spinning nak…
We construct the action-angle variables for the spherical part of conformal mechanics describing the motion of a particle near extreme Kerr throat. We indicate the existence of the critical point $|p_φ|=mc R_{\rm Sch}$ (with $m$ being the mass of the particle, $c$ denoting the speed of light, $R_{\rm Sch}=2γM /c^2$ being the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole with mass $M$, and $γ$ denoting the gravitational constant), where these variables are expressed in terms of elementary functions. Away from this point the action-angle variables are defined by elliptic integrals. The proposed formulati…

In this work we study a Kerr-like wormhole with phantom matter as source. It has three parameters: mass, angular momentum and scalar field charge. This wormhole has a naked ring singularity, other wise it is regular everywhere. The mean feature of this wormhole is that the mouth of the throat lie on a sphere of the same radius as the ring singularity an avoids any observer to see or to reach the singularity, it behaves like an anti-horizon. We analyse the geodesics of the wormhole and find that an observer can go through the geodesics without troubles, but the equator presents an infinity pote…
Using black-hole inequalities and the increase of the horizon's areas, we show that there are arbitrarily small electro-vacuum perturbations of the standard initial data of the extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black-hole that, (by contradiction), cannot decay in time into any extreme Kerr-Newman black-hole. This proves the expectation that the family of extreme Kerr-Newman black-holes is unstable. It remains of course to be seen whether the whole family of charged black-holes, including those extremes, is stable or not.
We present a new vacuum solution of Einstein's equations describing the near horizon region of two neutral, extreme (zero-temperature), co-rotating, non-identical Kerr black holes. The metric is stationary, asymptotically near horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK), and contains a localized massless strut along the symmetry axis between the black holes. In the deep infrared, it flows to two separate throats which we call "pierced-NHEK" geometries: each throat is NHEK pierced by a conical singularity. We find that in spite of the presence of the strut for the pierced-NHEK geometries the isometry group SL…
We examine the evolution, under gravitational radiation reaction, of slightly eccentric equatorial orbits of point particles around Kerr black holes. Our method involves numerical integration of the Sasaki-Nakamura equation. It is discovered that such orbits decrease in eccentricity throughout most of the inspiral, until shortly before the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), when a critical radius $r_{\text{crit}}$ is reached beyond which the inspiralling orbits increase in eccentricity. It is shown that the number of orbits remaining in this last (eccentricity increasing) phase of the ins…
We demonstrate the existence of equilibrium states in the limiting cases of the double-Kerr solution when one of the constituents is an extreme object. In the `extreme-subextreme' case the negative mass of one of the constituents is required for the balance, whereas in the `extreme-superextreme' equilibrium configurations both Kerr particles may have positive masses. We also show that the well-known relation |J|=M^2 between the mass and angular momentum in the extreme single Kerr solution ceases to be a characteristic property of the extreme Kerr particle in a binary system.
We prove the existence of a family of initial data for Einstein equations which represent small deformations of the extreme Kerr black hole initial data. The data in this family have the same asymptotic geometry as extreme Kerr. In particular, the deformations preserve the angular momentum and the area of the cylindrical end.
We present integral estimates for the shift and induced metric in the maximal isothermal gauge, corresponding to linear axially symmetric gravitational perturbations over the Minkowski and extreme Kerr metric. These bounds are a step towards finding pointwise bounds for the perturbations. In particular the presented estimate for the shift includes the horizon for the extreme Kerr case.
Geometrical properties of the extreme Kerr black holes in the topological sectors of nonextreme and extreme configurations are studied. We find that the Euler characteristic plays an essential role to distinguish these two kinds of extreme black holes. The relationship between the geometrical properties and the intrinsic thermodynamics are investigated.
Starting with the Dirac equation in the extreme Kerr metric we derive an integral representation for the propagator of solutions of the Cauchy problem with initial data in the class of smooth compactly supported functions.
It is shown numerically that strange matter rings permit a continuous transition to the extreme Kerr black hole. The multipoles as defined by Geroch and Hansen are studied and suggest a universal behaviour for bodies approaching the extreme Kerr solution parametrically. The appearance of a `throat region', a distinctive feature of the extreme Kerr spacetime, is observed. With regard to stability, we verify for a large class of rings, that a particle sitting on the surface of the ring never has enough energy to escape to infinity along a geodesic.

In this paper, we extend the work in \cite{D}\cite{ChrusLiWe}\cite{ChrusCo}\cite{Co}. We weaken the asymptotic conditions on the second fundamental form, and we also give an $L^{6}-$norm bound for the difference between general data and Extreme Kerr data or Extreme Kerr-Newman data by proving convexity of the renormalized Dirichlet energy when the target has non-positive curvature. In particular, we give the first proof of the strict mass/angular momentum/charge inequality for axisymmetric Einstein/Maxwell data which is not identical with the extreme Kerr-Newman solution.
The conjectured magnetized Kerr/CFT correspondence states that the quantum theory of gravity in the near horizon of extreme Kerr black holes immersed by the magnetic field, Near Horizon Extreme Magnetized Kerr black holes, is holographic dual to a two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory. To obtain Near Horizon Extreme Magnetized Kerr geometry, the extreme limit of the magnetized Kerr metric is taken so, $ a=M $ and then continued by transforming the coordinates to have a warped and twisted product of $ \textrm{AdS}_2 \times \textrm{S}^2 $, and also with the Near Horizon Extreme Kerr metr…
We describe the hyperboloidal compactification for Teukolsky equations in Kerr spacetime. We include null infinity on the numerical grid by attaching a hyperboloidal layer to a compact domain surrounding the rotating black hole and the orbit of an inspiralling point particle. This technique allows us to study, for the first time, gravitational waveforms from large- and extreme-mass-ratio inspirals in Kerr spacetime extracted at null infinity. Tests and comparisons of our results with previous calculations establish the accuracy and efficiency of the hyperboloidal layer method.
Within class of generic black holes there are extremal black holes (with vanishing Hawking temperature T) and vanishing horizon area Ah, but with finite Ah/T ratio, the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes. We study the near horizon limit of a four dimensional EVH black hole solution to a generic (gauged) Einstein-Maxwell dilaton theory and show that in the near horizon limit they develop a throat which is a pinching orbifold limit of AdS3. This is an extension of the well known result for extremal black holes the near horizon limit of which contains an AdS2 throat. We show that in the …
We prove that for axially symmetric linear gravitational perturbations of the extreme Kerr black hole there exists a positive definite and conserved energy. This provides a basic criteria for linear stability in axial symmetry. In the particular case of Minkowski, using this energy we also prove pointwise boundedness of the perturbation in a remarkable simple way.
In the present paper, within the framework of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes, binary systems composed of two unequal co- and counter-rotating extreme Kerr-Newman black holes separated by a massless strut are reported. The metric describing both configurations is introduced in a closed analytical form in terms of five arbitrary parameters: the masses $M_{i}$, electric charges $Q_{i}$, and a coordinate distance $R$. We obtain novel results from these configurations; in particular, those related to the merging process.
In the present paper the repulsion of two extreme Kerr black holes arising from their spin-spin interaction is analyzed within the framework of special subfamilies of the well-known Kinnersley-Chitre solution. The binary configurations of both equal and nonequal extreme repelling black holes are considered.
The general analysis of the relations between masses and angular momenta in the configurations composed of two balancing extremal Kerr particles is made on the basis of two exact solutions arising as extreme limits of the well-known double-Kerr spacetime. We show that the inequality M^2 >= |J| characteristic of an isolated Kerr black hole is verified by all the extremal components of the Tomimatsu and Dietz-Hoenselaers solutions. At the same time, the inequality can be violated by the total masses and total angular momenta of these binary systems, and we identify all the cases when such violat…
We study the eigenvalues of the angular equation arising after the separation of the Dirac equation in the extreme Kerr metric. To this purpose a self-adjoint holomorphic operator family associated to this eigenvalue problem is considered. We show that the eigenvalues satisfy a first order nonlinear differential equation with respect to the black hole mass and we solve it. Finally, we prove that there exist no bound states for the Dirac equation in the aforementioned metric.
Dynamics in the throat of rapidly rotating Kerr black holes is governed by an emergent near-horizon conformal symmetry. The throat contains unstable circular orbits at radii extending from the ISCO down to the light ring. We show that they are related by conformal transformations to physical plunges and osculating trajectories. These orbits have angular momentum arbitrarily higher than that of ISCO. Using the conformal symmetry we compute analytically the radiation produced by the physical orbits. We also present a simple formula for the full self-force on such trajectories in terms of the sel…
We obtain remarkably simple integral bounds for axially symmetric linear perturbations for the extreme Kerr black hole in terms of conserved energies. From these estimates we deduce pointwise bounds for the perturbations outside the horizon.
Aretakis has proved the existence of an instability of a massless scalar field at the horizon of an extreme Kerr or Reissner-Nordstrom black hole: for generic initial data, a transverse derivative of the scalar field at the horizon does not decay, and higher transverse derivatives blow up. We show that a similar instability occurs for linearized gravitational, and electromagnetic, perturbations of an extreme Kerr black hole. We show also that the massless scalar field instability occurs for extreme black hole solutions of a large class of theories in various spacetime dimensions.
We consider force-free magnetospheres around the extreme Kerr black hole. In this case there is no known exact analytic solution to force free electrodynamics which is stationary, axisymmetric and magnetically-dominated. However, any stationary, axisymmetric and regular force-free magnetosphere in extreme Kerr black hole approaches the same attractor solution in the near-horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) limit with null electromagnetic field. We show that by moving away from the attractor solution in the NHEK region, one finds magnetically-dominated solutions in the extreme Kerr black hole with fini…
We apply the method of Bäcklund transformations to generate a new hierarchy of exact solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations starting from the extreme Kerr near-horizon geometry. Solutions with extreme Kerr near-horizon asymptotics containing an arbitrary number of free parameters are included.
We propose a new approach to find magnetically-dominated force-free magnetospheres around highly spinning black holes, relevant for models of astrophysical jets. Employing the near-horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) limit of the Kerr black hole, any stationary, axisymmetric and regular force-free magnetosphere reduces to the same attractor solution in the NHEK limit with null electromagnetic field strength. We use this attractor solution as the universal starting point for perturbing away from the NHEK region in the extreme Kerr spacetime. We demonstrate that by going to second order in perturbation …
Dirac equation is solved in the near horizon limit geometry of an extreme Kerr black hole. We decouple equations first as usual, into an axial and angular part. The axial equation turns out to be independent of the mass and is solved exactly. The angular equation reduces, in the massless case, to a confluent Heun equation. In general for nonzero mass, the angular equation is expressible at best, as a set of coupled first order differential equations apt for numerical investigation. The axial potentials corresponding to the associated Schrodinger-type equations and their conserved currents are …
We study the non-monotonic Keplerian velocity profiles related to locally non-rotating frames (LNRF) in the field of near-extreme braneworld Kerr black holes and naked singularities in which the non-local gravitational effects of the bulk are represented by a braneworld tidal charge $b$ and the 4D geometry of the spacetime structure is governed by the Kerr-Newman geometry. We show that positive tidal charge has a tendency to restrict the values of the black hole dimensionless spin $a$ admitting existence of the non-monotonic Keplerian LNRF-velocity profiles; the non-monotonic profiles exist in…
The correspondence between black holes and colliding waves extends to cover the near horizon geometry of rotating black holes and colliding waves with cross polarization. Extreme Kerr and Kerr-Newman geometries are given as examples.
For scalar perturbations of an extreme Reissner-Nordstr{\" o}m black hole we show numerically that the Ori pre-factor equals the Aretakis conserved charge. We demonstrate a linear relation of a generalized Ori pre-factor -- a certain expression obtained from the late-time expansion or the perturbation field at finite distances -- and the Aretakis conserved charge for a family of scalar or gravitational perturbations of an extreme Kerr black hole, whose members vary only in the radial location of the center of the initial packet. We infer that it can be established that there is an Aretakis con…
In a very interesting paper, Hod has proven that the equatorial null circular geodesic provides the extreme orbital period to circle a kerr black hole, which is closely related to the Fermat's principle. In the present paper, we extend the discussion to kerr black holes with scalar field hair. We show that the circle with the extreme orbital period is still identical to the null circular geodesic. Our analysis also implies that the Hod's theorem may be a general property in any axially symmetric spacetime with reflection symmetry on the equatorial plane.
Massive objects orbiting a near-extreme Kerr black hole quickly plunge into the horizon after passing the innermost stable circular orbit. The plunge trajectory is shown to be related by a conformal map to a circular orbit. Conformal symmetry of the near-horizon region is then used to compute the gravitational radiation produced during the plunge phase.
The electrovac axisymmetric extreme isolated horizon/CFT correspondence is considered. By expansion techniques under the Bondi-like coordinates, it is proved that the near horizon geometry of electrovac axisymmetric extreme isolated horizon is unique. Furthermore, explicit coordinate transformation between the Bondi-like coordinates and the Poincare-type coordinates for the near horizon metric of the extreme Kerr-Newmann spacetime is found. Based on these analyses and the thermodynamics of the isolated horizon, then, the Kerr/CFT correspondence is generalized to nonstationary extreme black hol…
We have studied electromagnetic line emissions from near-horizon region in the extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole spacetime and then probe the effects of NUT charge on the electromagnetic line emissions. Due to the presence of the NUT charge, the equatorial plane is no more a symmetry plane of the KTN spacetime, which leads to that the dependence of electromagnetic line emission on the NUT charge for the observer in the Southern Hemisphere differs from that in the Northern one. Our result indicate that the electromagnetic line emission in the Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole case is brighter than that …
We revisit monochromatic and isotropic photon emissions from the zero-angular\linebreak-momentum sources (ZAMSs) near a Kerr black hole. We investigate the escape probability of the photons that can reach to infinity and study the energy shifts of these escaping photons, which could be expressed as the functions of the source radius and the black hole spin. We study the cases for generic source radius and black hole spin, but we pay special attention to the near-horizon (near-)extremal Kerr ((near-)NHEK) cases. We reproduce the relevant numerical results using a more efficient method and get n…
By utilizing the ultraspinning limit we generate a new class of extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) black holes in odd dimensions ($d\geq5$). Starting from the general multi-spinning Kerr-AdS metrics, we show the EVH limit commutes with the ultraspinning limit, in which the resulting solutions possess a non-compact but finite area manifold for all $(t,r\neq r_+)=const.$ slices. We also demonstrate the near horizon geometries of obtained ultraspinning EVH solutions contain an AdS$_3$ throats, where it would be a BTZ black hole in the near EVH cases. The commutativity of the ultraspinning and near …
In this paper we consider bound state solutions, i.e., normalizable time-periodic solutions of the Dirac equation in the exterior region of an extreme Kerr black hole with mass $M$ and angular momentum $J$. It is shown that for each azimuthal quantum number $k$ and for particular values of $J$ the Dirac equation has a bound state solution, and that the energy of this Dirac particle is uniquely determined by $ω= -\frac{kM}{2J}$. Moreover, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of bound states in the extreme Kerr-Newman geometry, and we give an explicit expression for th…
We examine the behaviour of circular geodesics describing orbits of neutral test particles around an extreme Kerr-Newman black hole. It is well known that the radial Boyer-Lindquist coordinates of the prograde photon orbit $r=r_{\rm ph}$, marginally bound orbit $r=r_{\rm mb}$ and innermost stable orbit $r=r_{\rm ms}$ of the extreme Kerr black hole all coincide with the event horizon's value $r=r_+$. We find that for the extreme Kerr-Newman black hole with mass $M$, angular momentum $J$ and electric charge $Q=\pm\sqrt{M^2-J^2/M^2}$ ($|J|\le M^2$) the coordinate equalities $r_{\rm ph}=r_+$, $r_{…
It is proven that for smooth initial data with compact support outside the event horizon, the solution of every azimuthal mode of the Teukolsky equation for general spin decays pointwise in time.
We present a one-function family of solutions to 4D vacuum Einstein equations. While all diffeomorphic to the same extremal Kerr black hole, they are labeled by well-defined conserved charges and are hence distinct geometries. We show that this family of solutions forms a phase space the symplectic structure of which is invariant under a $U(1)$ Kac-Moody algebra generated by currents $\mathbb{J}_n$ and Virasoro generators $\mathbb{L}_n$ with central charge six times angular momentum of the black hole. This symmetry algebra is well-defined everywhere in the spacetime, near the horizon or in the…
A new proof of the uniqueness of the Kerr-Newman black hole solutions amongst asymptotically flat, stationary and axisymmetric electro-vacuum spacetimes surrounding a connected Killing horizon is given by means of an explicit construction of the corresponding complex Ernst potentials on the axis of symmetry. This construction, which makes use of the inverse scattering method, also works in the case of a degenerate horizon.
