Here we give a more detailed account of the part of the conference report that was devoted to reinterpreting the Einstein `unified models of gravity and electromagnetism' (1923) as the unified theory of dark energy (cosmological constant) and dark matter (neutral massive vector particle having only gravitational interactions). After summarizing Einstein's work and related earlier work of Weyl and Eddington, we present an approach to finding spherically symmetric solutions of the simplest variant of the Einstein models that was earlier mentioned in Weyl's work as an example of his generalization of general relativity. The spherically symmetric static solutions and homogeneous cosmological models are considered in some detail. As the theory is not integrable we study approximate solutions. In the static case, we show that there may exist two horizons and derive solutions near the horizons. In cosmology, we propose to study the corresponding expansions of possible solutions near the origin and derive these expansions in a simplified model neglecting anisotropy. The structure of the solutions seems to hint at a possibility of an inflation mechanism that does not require adding scalar fields.
We investigate the classical stability of Schwarzschild-AdS black hole in a massive theory of the Einstein-Weyl gravity. It turns out that the linearized Einstein tensor perturbations exhibit unstable modes featuring the Gregory-Laflamme instability of five-dimensional AdS black string, in contrast to the stable Schwarzschild-AdS black hole in the Einstein-Weyl gravity. We confirm that the instability of the black hole in the Einstein-Weyl gravity arises from the massiveness but not a feature of fourth-order derivative theory giving ghost states.
Exhaustive ghost solutions to Einstein-Weyl equations for two dimensional spacetimes are obtained, where the ghost neutrinos propagate in the background spacetime, but do not influence the background spacetime due to the vanishing stress-energy-momentum tensor for the ghost neutrinos. Especially, those non-trivial ghost solutions provide a counterexample to the traditional claim that the Einstein-Hilbert action has no meaningful two dimensional analogue.
We construct charged asymptotically flat black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-Weyl(EMW) gravity. These solutions can be interpreted as generalizations of two different groups: Schwarzschild black hole (SBH) and non-Schwarzschild black hole (NSBH) solutions. In addition, we discuss the thermodynamic properties of two groups of numerical solutions in detail, and show that they obey the first law of thermodynamics.
We consider $d$-dimensional solutions to the electrovacuum Einstein-Maxwell equations with the Weyl tensor of type N and a null Maxwell $(p+1)$-form field. We prove that such spacetimes are necessarily aligned, i.e. the Weyl tensor of the corresponding spacetime and the electromagnetic field share the same \textit{aligned null direction} (AND). Moreover, this AND is geodetic, shear-free, non-expanding and non-twisting and hence Einstein-Maxwell equations imply that Weyl type N spacetimes with a null Maxwell $(p+1)$-form field belong to the Kundt class. Moreover, these Kundt spacetimes are nece…
Weyl invariant gravity has been investigated as the fundamental theory of the vector inflation. Accordingly, we consider a Weyl invariant extension of Dirac-Born-Infeld type gravity. We find that an appropriate choice of the metric removes the scalar degree of freedom which is at the first sight required by the local scale invariance of the action, and then a vector field acquires mass. Then nonminimal couplings of the vector field and curvatures are induced. We find that the Dirac-Born-Infeld type gravity is a suitable theory to the vector inflation scenario.
In this paper we consider quasi-normal modes of test scalar and electromagnetic fields in the background of a non-Schwarzschild black hole in the Einstein-Weyl gravity. We find the dependence of the modes on the new parameter $p$, which is related to the coupling constant $α$, for different values of the angular parameter $l$ and show that when $l$ is increasing, the frequencies tend to linear dependence on $p$. We have also examined the case of a massive scalar field for which we have shown that the arbitrarily long lived modes (called quasi-resonances) exist in the spectrum.
Quasinormal modes of Dirac field in the background of a non-Schwarzschild black holes in theories with higher curvature corrections are investigated in this paper. With the help of the semi-analytic WKB approximation and further using of Padé approximants as prescribed in [1] we consider quasinormal modes of a test massless Dirac field in the Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet (EdGB) and Einstein-Weyl (EW) theories. Even though the effective potential for one of the chiralities has a negative gap we show that the Dirac field is stable in both theories. We find the dependence of the modes on the new…
We consider a Weyl invariant extension of Dirac-Born-Infeld type gravity. An appropriate choice of the metric hides the scalar degree of freedom which is required by the local scale invariance of the action at the first sight, and then a vector field acquires mass. Moreover, nonminimal couplings of the vector field and curvatures are induced, which may be suitable to the vector inflation scenario.
We investigate which three dimensional near-horizon metrics $g_{NH}$ admit a compatible 1-form $X$ such that $(X, [g_{NH}])$ defines an Einstein-Weyl structure. We find explicit examples and see that some of the solutions give rise to Einstein-Weyl structures of dispersionless KP type and dispersionless Hirota (aka hyperCR) type.
We constructed the conformally invariant model for scalar particle creation induced by strong gravitational fields. Starting from the "usual" hydrodynamical description of the particle motion written in the Eulerian coordinates we substituted the particle number conservation law (which enters the formalism) by "the particle creation law", proportional to the square of the Weyl tensor (following the famous result by Ya.B.Zel`dovich and A. A.Starobinsky). Then, demanding the conformal invariance of the whole dynamical system, we have got both the (Weyl)-conformal gravity and the Einstein--Hilber…
In the hybrid skyrmion in which an Anti-de Sitter bag is imbedded into the skyrmion configuration a S^{1}\times S^{2} membrane is lying on the compactified spatial infinity of the bag [H. Rosu, Nuovo Cimento B 108, 313 (1993)]. The connection between the quark degrees of freedom and the mesonic ones is made through the membrane, in a way that should still be clarified from the standpoint of general relativity and topology. The S^1 \times S^2 membrane as a 3-dimensional manifold is at the same time a Weyl-Einstein space. We make here an excursion through the mathematical body of knowledge in th…
Einstein spacetimes (that is vacuum spacetimes possibly with a non-zero cosmological constant Λ) with constant non-zero Weyl eigenvalus are considered. For type Petrov II & D this assumption allows one to prove that the non-repeated eigenvalue necessarily has the value 2Λ/3 and it turns out that the only possible spacetimes are some Kundt-waves considered by Lewandowski which are type II and a Robinson-Bertotti solution of type D. For Petrov type I the only solution turns out to be a homogeneous pure vacuum solution found long ago by Petrov using group theoretic methods. These results can be s…
It is shown that in a quadratic gravity based on Weyl's conformal geometry, not only the Einstein-Hilbert action emerges but also a Weyl gauge field becomes massive in the Weyl gauge condition, $\tilde R = k$, for a Weyl gauge symmetry within the framework of the BRST formalism. We also consider a more general gravitational theory with a scalar field in the Weyl geometry and see that the Einstein-Hilbert action can be induced from spontaneous symmetry breakdown of the Weyl gauge symmetry. Thus, it turns out that Weyl's conformal gravity is quantum mechanically equivalent to Einstein's general …
We analyse in a systematic way the (non-)compact four dimensional Einstein-Weyl spaces equipped with a Bianchi metric. We show that Einstein-Weyl structures with a Class A Bianchi metric have a conformal scalar curvature of constant sign on the manifold. Moreover, we prove that most of them are conformally Einstein or conformally Kähler ; in the non-exact Einstein-Weyl case with a Bianchi metric of the type $VII_0, VIII$ or $IX$, we show that the distance may be taken in a diagonal form and we obtain its explicit 4-parameters expression. This extends our previous analysis, limited to the diago…
This paper explores the dark sector (dark matter and dark energy) from the perspective of Weyl geometric scalar tensor theory (integrable Weyl geometry). In order to account for the galactic dynamics successfully modelled by MOND ("modified Newtonian dynamics"), the non-minimally coupled scalar field considered here has a Lagrangian with two non-conventional contributions in addition to a standard kinetic term: one is inspired by Bekenstein/Milgrom's RAQUAL ("relativistic a-quadratic Lagrangian") from 1983, the other one by a second order term introduced in cosmological studies by Novello et a…
Equations of the conformal theory of gravity with a Dirac scalar field in a Weyl-Cartan space-time have been derived. An exact solution of the equation for a scalar field, which has kind of a decreasing exponential function, has been found. This allows to explain a significant decrease (during of the period of inflation) the energy of physical vacuum (dark energy), which has been identified with the energy of the Dirac scalar field.
Some properties of the 4-dim Riemannian spaces with metrics $$ ds^2=2(za_3-ta_4)dx^2+4(za_2-ta_3)dxdy+2(za_1-ta_2)dy^2+2dxdz+2dydt $$ associated with the second order nonlinear differential equations $$ y''+a_{1}(x,y){y'}^3+3a_{2}(x,y){y'}^2+3a_{3}(x,y)y'+a_{4}(x,y)=0 $$ with arbitrary coefficients $a_{i}(x,y)$ and 3-dim Einstein-Weyl spaces connected with dual equations $$ b''=g(a,b,b') $$ where the function $g(a,b,b')$ satisfied the partial differential equation $$ g_{aacc}+2cg_{abcc}+2gg_{accc}+c^2g_{bbcc}+2cgg_{bccc}+ g^2g_{cccc}+(g_a+cg_b)g_{ccc}-4g_{abc}- $$ $$ -4cg_{bbc} -cg_{c}g_{bcc}-…
A class of time dependent solutions to $(3+1)$ Einstein--Maxwell-dilaton theory with attractive electric force is found from Einstein--Weyl structures in (2+1) dimensions corresponding to dispersionless Kadomtsev--Petviashvili and $SU(\infty)$ Toda equations. These solutions are obtained from time--like Kaluza--Klein reductions of $(3+2)$ solitons.
We prove that higher dimensional Einstein spacetimes which possess a geodesic, non-degenerate double Weyl aligned null direction (WAND) $\ell$ must additionally possess a second double WAND (thus being of type D) if either: (a) the Weyl tensor obeys $C_{abc[d}\ell_{e]}\ell^c=0$ ($\LeftrightarrowΦ_{ij}=0$, i.e., the Weyl type is II(abd)); (b) $\ell$ is twistfree. Some comments about an extension of the Goldberg-Sachs theorem to six dimensions are also made.
An off-shell generalization of the Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) conserved charge was recently proposed by Kim et al. They achieved this by introducing off-shell Noether currents and potentials. In this paper, we construct the crucial off-shell Noether current by the variation of the Bianchi identity for the expression of motion equation, with the help of the property of Killing vector. Our Noether current, which contains an additional term that is just one half of the Lie derivative of a surface term with respect to the Killing vector, takes a different form in comparison with the one in their wor…
We analyse in a systematic way the four dimensionnal Einstein-Weyl spaces equipped with a diagonal Kähler Bianchi IX metric. In particular, we show that the subclass of Einstein-Weyl structures with a constant conformal scalar curvature is the one with a conformally scalar flat - but not necessarily scalar flat - metric ; we exhibit its 3-parameter distance and Weyl one-form. This extends previous analysis of Pedersen, Swann and Madsen , limited to the scalar flat, antiself-dual case. We also check that, in agreement with a theorem of Derdzinski, the most general conformally Einstein metric in…
The postulate of universal conformal (local Weyl scaling) symmetry modifies both general relativity and the Higgs scalar field model. The conformal Higgs model (CHM) generates an effective cosmological constant that fits observed accelerating Hubble expansion for redshifts $z\leq 1$ (7.33 Gyr) accurately with only one free parameter. Growth of a galaxy is modeled by central accumulation of matter from an enclosing empty spherical halo whose radius expands with depletion. Details of this process account for the nonclassical radial centripetal acceleration observed as excessive orbital velocitie…
This paper is devoted to compute the energy-momentum densities for two exact solutions of the Einstein field equations by using the prescriptions of Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Papapetrou and Möller. The spacetimes under consideration are the Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou and the Levi-Civita metrics. The Weyl metric becomes the special case of the Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou solution. The Levi-Civita metric provides constant momentum in each prescription with different energy density. The Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou metric yields all the quantities different in each prescription. These differences support the well…
We explore four-dimensional Einstein-Weyl gravity and supergravity on anti-de Sitter spacetime. For a specific range of the coupling with appropriate boundary conditions, we show the effective equivalence of the theory with Einstein gravity and AdS supergravity at the quadratic Lagrangian level. Furthermore we show that these equivalences can be promoted to the full nonlinear level. We also show that the similar behavior holds for the generalized Gibbons-Hawking terms. From this we find that the correlation functions in the dual conformal field theory of Einstein-Weyl gravity and supergravity …
We look for four dimensional Einstein-Weyl spaces equipped with a regular Bianchi metric. Using the explicit 4-parameters expression of the distance obtained in a previous work for non-conformally-Einstein Einstein-Weyl structures, we show that only four 1-parameter families of regular metrics exist on orientable manifolds : they are all of Bianchi $IX$ type and conformally Kähler ; moreover, in agreement with general results, they have a positive definite conformal scalar curvature. In a Gauduchon's gauge, they are compact and we obtain their topological invariants. Finally, we compare our re…
By making use of the background field method, the one-loop quantization for Euclidean Einstein-Weyl quadratic gravity model on the de Sitter universe is investigated. Using generalized zeta function regularization, the on-shell and off-shell one-loop effective actions are explicitly obtained and one-loop renormalizability, as well as the corresponding one-loop renormalization group equations, are discussed. The so called critical gravity is also considered.
HyperCR Einstein--Weyl equations in 2+1 dimensions reduce to a pair of quasi-linear PDEs of hydrodynamic type. All solutions to this hydrodynamic system can be in principle constructed from a twistor correspondence, thus establishing the integrability. Simple examples of solutions including the hydrodynamic reductions yield new Einstein--Weyl structures.
The Poincare and Poincare-Weyl gauge theories of gravitation with Lagrangians quadratic on curvature and torsion in post-Riemannian spaces with the Dirac scalar field is discussed in a historical aspect. The various hypothesizes concerning the models of a dark matter with the help of a scalar field are considered. The new conformal Weyl-Dirac theory of gravitation is proposed, which is a gravitational theory in Cartan-Weyl space-time with the Dirac scalar field representing the dark matter model. A static spherically symmetric solution of the field equations in vacuum for a central compact mas…
In the framework of Weyl-Dirac's theory a perturbed universe is considered. It contains luminous matter, dark matter consisting of weylons as well dark energy (DE) presented by Dirac's gauge function,β. A massive body creates a spherically symmetric gravitational field, that is regarded as the perturbation of the homogeneous and isotropic universe [20]. Around the perturbing mass the dark energy forms up a ball-like concentration that reaches the horizon. The energy-mass density of this DE ball, the pressure and mass are searched. It turns out that they all are negative. As negative pressure i…
We extend the recently proved relation between certain models of Non-Riemannian gravitation and Einstein- Proca-Weyl theories to a class of Scalar gravity theories. This is used to present a Black-Hole Dilaton solution with non-Riemannian connection.
We discuss the Kaluza-Klein reduction of spaces with (anti-)self-dual Weyl tensor and point out the emergence of the Einstein-Weyl equations for the reduction from four to three dimensions. As a byproduct we get a simple expression for the gravitational instanton density in terms of the Kaluza-Klein functions.
In this paper, we evaluate energy and momentum density distributions for the Weyl metric by using the well-known prescriptions of Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Papaterou and M$\ddot{o}$ller. The metric under consideration is the static axisymmetric vacuum solution to the Einstein field equations and one of the field equations represents the Laplace equation. Curzon metric is the special case of this spacetime. We find that the energy density is different for each prescription. However, momentum turns out to be constant in each case.
We obtain a newly charged BBMB (Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein) black hole solution from the Einstein-Weyl-Maxwell-conformal (conformally coupled) scalar theory with a positive Weyl coupling parameter $m^2_2$ numerically. This solution has a primary scalar hair, compared to a secondary scalar hair in the charged BBMB black hole solution. The limiting case of $m_2^2\to\infty$ leads to the series form of the charged BBMB black hole solution. However, for $m^2_2<0$, we could not obtain any asymptotically flat black hole solution with scalar hair.
We consider conformally invariant form of the actions in Einstein, Weyl, Einstein-Cartan and Einstein-Cartan-Weyl space in general dimensions($>2$) and investigate the relations among them. In Weyl space, the observational consistency condition for the vector field determining non-metricity of the connection can be obtained from the equation of motion. In Einstein-Cartan space a similar role is played by the vector part of the torsion tensor. We consider the case where the trace part of the torsion is the Kalb-Ramond type of field. In this case, we express conformally invariant action in terms…
We study the Einstein-aether theory in Weyl integrable geometry. The scalar field which defines the Weyl affine connection is introduced in the gravitational field equation. We end up with an Einstein-aether scalar field model where the interaction between the scalar field and the aether field has a geometric origin. The scalar field plays a significant role in the evolution of the gravitational field equations. We focus our study on the case of homogeneous and isotropic background spacetimes and study their dynamical evolution for various cosmological models.
We show that conformally compact, globally hyperbolic, Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl 3-manifolds are in natural one-to-one correspondence with orientation-reversing diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere. The proof hinges on a holomorphic-disk analog of Hitchin's mini-twistor correspondence.
Recently, it has been pointed out that dimensionless actions in four dimensional curved spacetime possess a symmetry which goes beyond scale invariance but is smaller than full Weyl invariance. This symmetry was dubbed {\it restricted Weyl invariance}. We show that starting with a restricted Weyl invariant action that includes a Higgs sector with no explicit mass, one can generate the Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant and a Higgs mass. The model also contains an extra massless scalar field which couples to the Higgs field (and gravity). If the coupling of this extra scalar fie…
It was recently found that, after performing a Weyl conformal transformation, the familiar analogy between black hole mechanics and black hole thermodynamics becomes ambiguous. It was argued that this fact can be traced back to the fundamental dichotomy between matter and geometry, which is at the heart of Einstein's field equations. As a further study of this issue, we investigate here the general link between spacetime thermodynamics and Weyl transformations from two other angles. We first examine the conformal behaviour of the horizon entropy within Wald's approach based on the fundamental …
We derive a dispersionless integrable system describing a local form of a general three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl geometry with an Euclidean (positive) signature, construct its matrix extension and demonstrate that it leads to the Bogomolny equations for a non-abelian monopole on an Einstein-Weyl geometry background. The corresponding dispersionless integrable hierarchy, its matrix extension and the dressing scheme are also considered.
The Weyl double copy relates vacuum solutions in general relativity to Abelian gauge fields in Minkowski spacetime. In a previous work, we showed how the Weyl double copy can be extended to provide a treatment of external gravitational sources consistent with the classical Kerr-Schild double copy. Using this generalization, here we provide a complete double copy analysis of electrovacuum Petrov type D spacetimes. This includes the first analysis of the charged C-metric, whose single copy interpretation invokes the two-potential formalism of electrodynamics. We also present the first double cop…
We present two constructions of new solutions to the dispersionless KP (dKP) equation arising from the first two Painlevé transcendents. The first construction is a hodograph transformation based on Einstein--Weyl geometry, the generalised Nahm's equation and the isomonodromy problem. The second construction, motivated by the first, is a direct characterisation of solutions to dKP which are constant on a central quadric. We show how the solutions to the dKP equations can be used to construct some three-dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures, and four--dimensional anti-self-dual null-Kähler metr…
The main results are the following. We derived the matching conditions for the spherically symmetric singular hypersurface (in our case it is equivalent to the world line) in the Weyl$+$Einstein gravity. It was found, that the residual extrinsic curvature tensor of this surface must be continuous on the singular hypersurface. The result is the same as that found by Senovilla, it is dictated by the very possibility to have the double layer, but the jump in the normal derivative of the radius may be not zero. It was found that in the presence of the double layer, the matching conditions contain …
In this paper we consider the geometric behavior near infinity of some Einstein manifolds $(X^n, g)$ with Weyl curvature belonging to a certain $L^p$ space. Namely, we show that if $(X^n, g)$, $n \geq 7$, admits an essential set and has its Weyl curvature in $L^p$ for some $1<p<\frac{n-1}{2}$, then $(X^n, g)$ must be asymptotically locally hyperbolic. One interesting application of this theorem is to show a rigidity result for the hyperbolic space under an integral condition for the curvature.
The hypothesis that gravitational self-binding energy may be the source for the vacuum energy term of cosmology is studied in a Newtonian Ansatz. For spherical spaces the attractive force of gravitation and the negative pressure of the vacuum energy term form a self stabilizing system under very reasonable restrictions for the parameters, among them a characteristic coefficient βof self energy. In the Weyl geometric approach to cosmological redshift, Einstein-Weyl universes with observational restrictions of the curvature parameters are dynamically stable, if βis about 40 % smaller than in the…
We show that a class of solutions of minimal supergravity in five dimensions is given by lifts of three--dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures of hyper-CR type. We characterise this class as most general near--horizon limits of supersymmetric solutions to the five--dimensional theory. In particular, we deduce that a compact spatial section of a horizon can only be a Berger sphere, a product metric on $S^1\times S^2$ or a flat three-torus. We then consider the problem of reconstructing all supersymmetric solutions from a given near--horizon geometry. By exploiting the ellipticity of the lineari…

We consider four (real or complex) dimensional hyper-Kähler metrics with a conformal symmetry K. The three-dimensional space of orbits of K is shown to have an Einstein-Weyl structure which admits a shear-free geodesics congruence for which the twist is a constant multiple of the divergence. In this case the Einstein-Weyl equations reduce down to a single second order PDE for one function. The Lax representation, Lie point symmetries, hidden symmetries and the recursion operator associated with this PDE are found, and some group invariant solutions are considered.
We investigate the evolution of cosmological perturbations during de Sitter inflation in the Einstein-Chern-Simons-Weyl gravity. Primordial massive gravitational waves are composed of one scalar, two vector and four tensor circularly polarized modes. We show that the vector power spectrum decays quickly like a transversely massive vector in the superhorizon limit $z\to 0$. In this limit, the power spectrum coming from massive tensor modes decays quickly, leading to the conventional tensor power spectrum. Also, we find that in the limit of $m^2 \to 0$ (keeping the Weyl-squared term only), the v…
