We study the Einstein-aether theory in Weyl integrable geometry. The scalar field which defines the Weyl affine connection is introduced in the gravitational field equation. We end up with an Einstein-aether scalar field model where the interaction between the scalar field and the aether field has a geometric origin. The scalar field plays a significant role in the evolution of the gravitational field equations. We focus our study on the case of homogeneous and isotropic background spacetimes and study their dynamical evolution for various cosmological models.
We consider a Lorentz violating scalar field cosmological model given by the modified Einstein-aether theory defined in Weyl integrable geometry. The existence of exact and analytic solutions is investigated for the case of a spatially flat Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker background space. We show that the theory admits cosmological solutions of special interests. In addition, we prove that the cosmological field equations admit the Lewis invariant as a second conservation law, which indicates the integrability of the field equations.
In the context of Einstein-aether scalar field cosmology we solve the field equations and determine exact and analytic solutions. In particular, we consider a model proposed by Kanno and Soda where the aether and the scalar fields interact through the aether coefficient parameters, which are promoted to be functions of the scalar field. For this model, we write the field equations by using the minisuperspace approach and we determine the scalar field potentials which leads to Liouville--integrable systems. We solve the field equations for five families of scalar field potentials and, whether i…
We determine exact and analytic solutions of the gravitational field equations in Einstein-aether scalar model field with a Bianchi I background space. In particular, we consider nonlinear interactions of the scalar field with the aether field. For the model under consideration we can write the field equations by using the minisuperspace description. The point-like Lagrangian of the field equations depends on three unknown functions. We derive conservation laws for the field equations for specific forms of the unknown functions such that the field equations are Liouville integrable. Furthermor…
We derive a dispersionless integrable system describing a local form of a general three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl geometry with an Euclidean (positive) signature, construct its matrix extension and demonstrate that it leads to the Bogomolny equations for a non-abelian monopole on an Einstein-Weyl geometry background. The corresponding dispersionless integrable hierarchy, its matrix extension and the dressing scheme are also considered.
We apply singularity analysis to investigate the integrability properties of the gravitational field equations in Weyl Integrable Spacetime for a spatially flat Friedmann--Lemaître--Robertson--Walker background spacetime induced with an ideal gas. We find that the field equations possess the Painlevé property in the presence of the cosmological constant and the analytic solution is given by a left Laurent expansion.
We study the variational principle over an Hilbert-Einstein like action for an extended geometry taking into account torsion and non-metricity. By extending the semi-Riemannian geometry, we obtain an effective energy-momentum tensor which can be interpreted as physical sources. As an application we develop a new manner to obtain the gravitational wave equations on a Weyl-integrable manifold taking into account the non-metricity and non-trivial boundary conditions on the minimization of the action, which can be identified as possible sources for the cosmological constant and provides two differ…
We study homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies in a Weyl spacetime. It is shown that in Weyl integrable spacetime, the corresponding scalar field may act as a phantom field. In this circumstance the Weyl field gives rise to a late accelerated expansion of the Universe for all initial conditions and for a wide range of the parameters.
The evolution of 4-dimensional and (4+d)-dimensional (d=1,2) cosmological models based on the integrable Weyl geometry are considered numerically both for empty space-time and for scalar field with non minimal coupling with gravity.
We consider a cosmological model in a Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker background space with an ideal gas defined in Weyl Integrable gravity. In the Einstein-Weyl theory a scalar field is introduced in a geometric way. Furthermore, the scalar field and the ideal gas interact in the gravitational Action Integral. Furthermore, we introduce a potential term for the scalar field potential and we show that the field equations admit a minisuperspace description. Noether's theorem is applied for the constraint of the potential function and the corresponding conservation laws are constructed. …
We investigate if a recently introduced formulation of general relativity on a Weyl-integrable geometry, contains cosmological solutions exhibiting acceleration in the present cosmic expansion. We derive the general conditions to have acceleration in the expansion of the universe and obtain a particular solution for the Weyl scalar field describing a cosmological model for the present time in concordance with the data combination Planck + WP + BAO + SN.
We investigate the cosmological evolution for the physical parameters in Weyl integrable gravity in a Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker universe with zero spatially curvature. For the matter component, we assume that it is an ideal gas, and of the Chaplygin gas. From the Weyl integrable gravity a scalar field is introduced by a geometric approach which provides an interaction with the matter component. We calculate the stationary points for the field equations and we study their stability properties. Furthermore, we solve the inverse problem for the case of an ideal gas and prove that t…
HyperCR Einstein--Weyl equations in 2+1 dimensions reduce to a pair of quasi-linear PDEs of hydrodynamic type. All solutions to this hydrodynamic system can be in principle constructed from a twistor correspondence, thus establishing the integrability. Simple examples of solutions including the hydrodynamic reductions yield new Einstein--Weyl structures.
We investigate the Weyl space-time extension of general relativity (GR) for studying the FLRW cosmology through focusing and defocusing of the geodesic congruences. We have derived the equations of evolution for expansion, shear and rotation in the Weyl space-time. In particular we consider the Starobinsky modification, $f(R)=R+βR^2-2Λ$, of gravity in the Einstein-Palatini formalism, which turns out to reduce to the Weyl integrable space-time (WIST) with the Weyl vector being a gradient. The modified Raychaudhuri equation takes the form of the Hill-type equation which is then analysed for stud…
We investigate the existence of inhomogeneous exact solutions in Weyl Integrable theory with a matter source. In particular, we consider the existence of a dust fluid source while for the underlying geometry we assume a line element which belongs to the family of silent universes. We solve explicitly the field equations and we find the Szekeres spacetimes in Weyl Integrable theory. We show that only the isotropic family can describe inhomogeneous solutions where the LTB spacetimes are included. A detailed analysis of the dynamics of the field equations is given where the past and future attrac…
The expansion of a square integrable function on $SL(2,C)$ into the sum of the principal series matrix coefficients with the specially selected representation parameters was recently used in the Loop Quantum Gravity $\cite{RovelliBook2}$, $\cite{Rovelli2010}$. In this paper we prove that the sum $\sum\limits_{j=1}^{\infty}\sum\limits_{|m| \le j}\sum\limits_{|n| \le j} \frac{D^{(j, τj)}_{jm, jn}(g)}{j^k}$, where $ j, m, n \in Z, τ\in C$ is convergent to a square integrable function on $SL(2,C)$. We also prove that for each fixed m: $\sum\limits_{j=1}^{\infty}\frac{D^{(j, τj)}_{jm, jm}(g)}{j^k}$…
We investigate gauge invariant scalar fluctuations of the metric during inflation in a non-perturbative formalism in the framework of a recently introduced scalar-tensor theory of gravity formulated on a Weyl-Integrable geometry. We found that the Weyl scalar field can play the role of the inflaton field in this theory. As an application we study the case of a power law inflation. In this case the quasi-scale invariance of the spectrum for scalar fluctuations of the metric is achieved for determined values of the $ω$ parameter of the scalar-tensor theory. In our formalism the physical inflaton…
In the present article, we show that a simple modification to the Einstein-Hilbert action can explain the possibility of mutual interaction between the cosmic fluids. That is achieved considering the Weyl Integrable Spacetime in the background of a nonflat Friedmann-Lemnaître-Robertson-Walker geometry for the universe. We show that widely-known phenomenological interacting cosmological scenarios can naturally appear in this context. We then performed the dynamical system analysis of the underlying cosmological scenario and explored many possibilities extracted from this gravitational theory.
We investigate (2+1)-dimensional gravity in a Weyl integrable spacetime (WIST). We show that, unlike general relativity, this scalar-tensor theory has a Newtonian limit for any dimension and that in three dimensions the congruence of world lines of particles of a pressureless fluid has a non-vanishing geodesic deviation. We present and discuss a class of static vacuum solutions generated by a circularly symmetric matter distribution that for certain values of the parameter w corresponds to a space-time with a naked singularity at the center of the matter distribution. We interpret all these re…
We construct a class of static, axially symmetric solutions representing razor-thin disks of matter in an Integrable Weyl-Dirac theory proposed in Found. Phys. 29, 1303 (1999). The main differences between these solutions and the corresponding general relativistic one are analyzed, focusing on the behavior of physical observables (rotation curves of test particles, density and pressure profiles). We consider the case in which test particles move on Weyl geodesics. The same rotation curve can be obtained from many different solutions of the Weyl-Dirac theory, although some of these solutions pr…
Weyl's conformal theory of gravity is an extension of Einstein's theory of general relativity which associates metrics with 1-forms . In the case of locally integrable (closed non-exact) 1-forms the spacetime manifolds are no more simply connected. The Weil connections yield curvature tensors which satisfy the basic properties of Riemann curvature tensors. The Ricci tensors are symmetric, conformally invariant, and the Einstein tensors computed with the Weyl connections implicate a cosmological term replacing the cosmological constant by a function of spacetime, and a shear stress tensor. A to…
The requirement that the laws of physics must be invariant under point-dependent transformations of the units of length, time, and mass is used as a selection principle while studying different generic effective theories of gravity. Thereof theories with non-minimal coupling of the dilaton both to the curvature and to the Lagrangian of the matter fields seem to represent the most viable low-energy [and low-curvature] description of gravity. Consequently, the cosmological singularity problem is treated within the context of string cosmology with non-minimal coupling of the dilaton to a barotrop…
In this paper a Weyl geometric scalar tensor theory of gravity with scalar field $Φ$ and scale invariant cubic ("aquadratic") kinetic Lagrangian is introduced. Einstein gauge (comparable to Einstein frame in Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory) is most natural for studying trajectories. In it, the Weylian scale connection induces an additional acceleration which in the weak field, static, low velocity limit acquires the deep MOND form of Milgrom/Bekenstein's gravity. The energy momentum of $Φ$ leads to another add on to Newton acceleration. Both additional accelerations together imply a MOND-ian phenome…
In the Relativistic Quantum Geometry (RQG) formalism recently introduced, was explored the possibility that the variation of the tensor metric can be done in a Weylian integrable manifold using a geometric displacement, from a Riemannian to a Weylian integrable manifold, described by the dynamics of an auxiliary geometrical scalar field $θ$, in order that the Einstein tensor (and the Einstein equations) can be represented on a Weyl-like manifold. In this framework we study jointly the dynamics of electromagnetic fields produced by quantum complex vector fields, which describes charges without …
Just after Weyl's paper (Weyl in Gravitation und Elektrizität, Sitzungsber. Preuss. Akad., Berlin, 1918) Einstein claimed that a gravity model written in a spacetime geometry with non-metricity suffers from a phenomenon, the so-called second clock effect. We give a new prescription of parallel transport of a vector tangent to a curve which is invariant under both of local general coordinate and Weyl transformations in order to remove that effect. Thus since the length of tangent vector does not change during parallel transport along a closed curve in spacetimes with non-metricity, a second clo…
We consider scalar-tensor theories of gravity defined in Weyl integrable space-time and show that in the ADM formalism Weyl transformations corresponding to change of frames induce canonical transformations between different representations of the phase space. In this context, we discuss the physical equivalence of two distinct Weyl frames at the classical level.
A short survey of some material related to conformal general relativity (CGR), integrable Weyl geometry, and Dirac-Weyl (DW) theory is given which suggests that CGR is essentially equivalent to DW with quantum mass equivalent to conformal mass, and various actions can be reformulated in terms of the quantum potential.
Using a combination of techniques from conformal and complex geometry, we show the potentialization of 4-dimensional closed Einstein-Weyl structures which are half-algebraically special and admit a "half-integrable" almost-complex structure. That is, we reduce the Einstein-Weyl equations to a single, conformally invariant, non-linear scalar equation, that we call the "conformal HH equation", and we reconstruct the conformal structure (curvature and metric) from a solution to this equation. We show that the conformal metric is composed of: a conformally flat part, a conformally half-flat part r…
We extend one of the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems in general relativity to the case of some scalar-tensor gravity theories in which the scalar field has a geometrical character and space-time has the mathematical structure of a Weyl integrable space-time (WIST). We adopt an invariant formalism, so that the extended version of theorem does not depend on a particular frame.
We introduce a new gauge and solution space for three-dimensional gravity. As its name Bondi-Weyl suggests, it leads to non-trivial Weyl charges, and uses Bondi-like coordinates to allow for an arbitrary cosmological constant and therefore spacetimes which are asymptotically locally (A)dS or flat. We explain how integrability requires a choice of integrable slicing and also the introduction of a corner term. After discussing the holographic renormalization of the action and of the symplectic potential, we show that the charges are finite, symplectic and integrable, yet not conserved. We find f…
We study homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies in a Weyl spacetime. We show that the field equations can be reduced to the Einstein equations with a two-fluid source and analyze the qualitative, asymptotic behavior of the models. Assuming an interaction of the two fluids we impose conditions so that the solutions of the corresponding dynamical system remain in the physically acceptable phase space. We show that in Weyl integrable spacetime, the corresponding scalar field acts as a phantom field and therefore, it may give rise to a late accelerated expansion of the Universe.
In this note, we use the disformal transformation to induce a geometry from the manifold which is originally Riemannian. The new geometry obtained here can be considered as a generalization of Weyl integrable geometry. Based on these results, we further propose a geometry which is naturally a generalization of Weyl geometry.
This paper explores the dark sector (dark matter and dark energy) from the perspective of Weyl geometric scalar tensor theory (integrable Weyl geometry). In order to account for the galactic dynamics successfully modelled by MOND ("modified Newtonian dynamics"), the non-minimally coupled scalar field considered here has a Lagrangian with two non-conventional contributions in addition to a standard kinetic term: one is inspired by Bekenstein/Milgrom's RAQUAL ("relativistic a-quadratic Lagrangian") from 1983, the other one by a second order term introduced in cosmological studies by Novello et a…
In this paper, we analyse the well-posedness of the initial value formulation for particular kinds of geometric scalar-tensor theories of gravity, which are based on a Weyl integrable space-time. We will show that, within a frame-invariant interpretation for the theory, the Cauchy problem in vacuum is well-posed. We will analyse the global in space problem, and, furthermore, we will show that geometric uniqueness holds for the solutions. We make contact with Brans-Dicke theory, and by analysing the similarities with such models, we highlight how some of our results can be translated to this we…
We discuss the cosmological evolution of the Weyl conformal geometry and its associated Weyl quadratic gravity. The Einstein gravity (with a positive cosmological constant) is recovered in the spontaneously broken phase of Weyl gravity; this happens after the Weyl gauge field ($ω_μ$) of scale symmetry, that is part of the Weyl geometry, becomes massive by Stueckelberg mechanism and then decouples. This breaking is a natural result of the cosmological evolution of Weyl geometry, in the absence of matter. Of particular interest in the analysis is the special limiting case of Weyl integrable geom…
We investigate the geometry of a twisting non-shearing congruence of null geodesics on a conformal manifold of even dimension greater than four and Lorentzian signature. We give a necessary and sufficient condition on the Weyl tensor for the twist to induce an almost Robinson structure, that is, the screen bundle of the congruence is equipped with a bundle complex structure. In this case, the (local) leaf space of the congruence acquires a partially integrable contact almost CR structure of positive definite signature. We give further curvature conditions for the integrability of the almost Ro…
The issue of the transformations of units is treated, mainly, in a geometrical context. It is shown that Weyl-integrable geometry is a consistent framework for the formulation of the gravitational laws since the basic law on which this geometry rests is invariant under point-dependent transformations of units. Riemann geometry does not fulfill this requirement. Spacetime singularities are then shown to be a consequence of a wrong choice of the geometrical formulation of the laws of gravitation. This result is discussed, in particular, for the Schwrazschild black hole and for Friedmann-Robertso…
We provide a gauge-invariant theory of gravitation in the context of Weyl Integrable Space-Times. After making a brief review of the theory's postulates, we carefully define the observers' proper-time and point out its relation with space-time description. As a consequence of this relation and the theory's gauge symmetry we recover all predictions of General Relativity. This feature is made even clearer by a new exact solution we provide which reveals the importance of a well defined proper-time. The thermodynamical description of the source fields is given and we observe that each of the geom…
In this paper, we consider a de Sitter thick brane model in a pure geometric Weyl integrable five-dimensional space-time, which is a generalization of Riemann geometry and is invariant under a so-called Weyl rescaling. We find a solution of this model via performing a conformal transformation to map the Weylian structure into a familiar Riemannian one with a conformal metric. The metric perturbations of the model are discussed. For gravitational perturbation, we get the effective modified P$\ddot{\text{o}}$schl-Teller potential in corresponding Schr$\ddot{\text{o}}$dinger equation for Kaluza-K…
In this paper we obtain some cosmological solutions that describe the present period of accelerating expansion of the universe in the framework of a geometrical gauge scalar-tensor theory of gravity. The background geometry in the model is the Weyl integrable and we found a class of power law solutions for the Weyl scalar field when an invariant metric is employed in a power law expanding universe. We obtain a deceleration and an equation of state parameters in agreement with PLANCK 2018 observational data for some specific parameters of the model. The deceleration parameter tends asymptotical…
