We provide a gauge-invariant theory of gravitation in the context of Weyl Integrable Space-Times. After making a brief review of the theory's postulates, we carefully define the observers' proper-time and point out its relation with space-time description. As a consequence of this relation and the theory's gauge symmetry we recover all predictions of General Relativity. This feature is made even clearer by a new exact solution we provide which reveals the importance of a well defined proper-time. The thermodynamical description of the source fields is given and we observe that each of the geometric fields have a certain physical significance, despite the gauge-invariance. This is shown by two examples, where one of them consists of a new cosmological constant solution. Our conclusions highlight the intimate relation among test particles trajectories, proper-time and space-time description which can also be applied in any other situation, whether or not it recovers General Relativity results and also in the absence of a gauge symmetry.
A spinor current-source is found in the Weyl non-Abelian gauge theory which does not contain the abstract gauge space. It is shown that the searched spinor representation can be constructed in the space of external differential forms and it is a 16-component quantity for which a gauge-invariant Lagrangian is determined. The connexion between the Weyl non-Abelian gauge potential and the Cartan torsion field and the problem of a possible manifestation of the considered interactions are considered.
Instead of the scalar "dilaton" field that is usually adopted to construct conformally invariant Lagrangians for gravitation, we here propose a hybrid construction, involving both a complex dilaton scalar and a Weyl gauge-vector, in accord with Weyl's original concept of a non-Riemannian conformal geometry with a transport law for length and time intervals, for which this gauge vector is required. Such a hybrid construction permits us to avoid the wrong sign of the dilaton kinetic term (the ghost problem) that afflicts the usual construction. The introduction of a Weyl gauge-vector and its int…
Recently the vector inflation has been proposed as the alternative to inflationary models based on scalar bosons and quintessence scalar fields. In the vector inflationary model, the vector field non-minimally couples to gravity. We should, however, inquire if there exists a relevant fundamental theory which supports the inflationary scenario. We investigate the possibility that Weyl's gauge gravity theory could be such a fundamental theory. That is the reason why the Weyl's gauge invariant vector and scalar fields are naturally introduced. After rescaling the Weyl's gauge invariant Lagrangian…
This elementary discussion generalizes a Weyl geometry to allow quaternion valued gauge transformations and classical Yang-Mills geometric fields. This development will assume that the symmetric metric tensor is real in some gauge, and will develop the left and right handed approaches to quaternionic gauge transformations. Quaternionic gauge transformations are shown actually to require the shifting of some of Weyl's nonmetricity into torsion to define a properly transforming gauge field full curvature tensor, which is constructed as an asymmetric sum of left and right handed forms. Natural, g…
Perturbation theory of rotating black holes is described in terms of the Weyl scalars $ψ_4$ and $ψ_0$; each satisfying the Teukolsky's complex master wave equation with spin $s=\mp2$, and respectively representing outgoing and ingoing radiation. We explicitly construct the metric perturbations out of these Weyl scalars in the Regge-Wheeler gauge in the nonrotating limit. We propose a generalization of the Regge-Wheeler gauge for Kerr background in the Newman-Penrose language, and discuss the approach for building up the perturbed spacetime of a rotating black hole. We also provide both-way rel…
We compute the linearized Weyl-Weyl correlator using a new solution for the graviton propagator on de Sitter background in de Donder gauge. The result agrees exactly with a previous computation in a noncovariant gauge. We also use dimensional regularization to compute the one loop expectation value of the square of the Weyl tensor.
We reconsider the status of the so-called second clock effect in Weyl gauge theories of gravity, which are invariant both under local Poincaré transformations and local changes of scale. In particular, we revisit and extend our previous demonstration that the second clock effect does not occur in such theories, in order both to clarify our argument and confirm our original findings in response to recent counterclaims in the literature.
The wave equation and equations of covariantly-constant vector fields (CCVF) in spaces with Weyl nonmetricity turn out to possess, in addition to the canonical conformal-gauge, a gauge invariance of another type. On a Minkowski metric background, the CCVF system alone allows us to pin down the Weyl 4-metricity vector, identified herein with the electromagnetic potential. The fundamental solution is given by the ordinary Lienard-Wiechert field, in particular, by the Coulomb distribution for a charge at rest. Unlike the latter, however, the magnitude of charge is necessarily unity, "elementary",…
We analyse strong gravitational field time delay for photons coupled to the Weyl tensor in a Schwarzschild black hole. By making use of the method of strong deflection limit, we find that these time delays between relativistic images are significantly affected by polarization directions of such a coupling. A practical problem about determination of the polarization direction by observations is investigated. It is found that if the first and second relativistic images can be resolved, the measurement of time delay can more effectively improve detectability of the polarization direction.
Equations of the conformal theory of gravity with a Dirac scalar field in a Weyl-Cartan space-time have been derived. An exact solution of the equation for a scalar field, which has kind of a decreasing exponential function, has been found. This allows to explain a significant decrease (during of the period of inflation) the energy of physical vacuum (dark energy), which has been identified with the energy of the Dirac scalar field.
The Poincare and Poincare-Weyl gauge theories of gravitation with Lagrangians quadratic on curvature and torsion in post-Riemannian spaces with the Dirac scalar field is discussed in a historical aspect. The various hypothesizes concerning the models of a dark matter with the help of a scalar field are considered. The new conformal Weyl-Dirac theory of gravitation is proposed, which is a gravitational theory in Cartan-Weyl space-time with the Dirac scalar field representing the dark matter model. A static spherically symmetric solution of the field equations in vacuum for a central compact mas…
We investigate gauge invariant scalar fluctuations of the metric during inflation in a non-perturbative formalism in the framework of a recently introduced scalar-tensor theory of gravity formulated on a Weyl-Integrable geometry. We found that the Weyl scalar field can play the role of the inflaton field in this theory. As an application we study the case of a power law inflation. In this case the quasi-scale invariance of the spectrum for scalar fluctuations of the metric is achieved for determined values of the $ω$ parameter of the scalar-tensor theory. In our formalism the physical inflaton…
It is argued that in Weyl electrovacuum solutions the linear term in the metric cannot be eliminated just on grounds of gauge invariance. Its importance is stressed.
The electric and the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor, as well as the invariants obtained from them, are calculated for the Bondi vacuum metric. One of the invariants vanishes identically and the other only exhibits contributions from terms of the Weyl tensor containing the static part of the field. It is shown that the necessary and sufficient condition for the spacetime to be purely electric is that such spacetime be static. It is also shown that the vanishing of the electric part implies Minkowski spacetime. Unlike the electric part, the magnetic part does not contain contributions from the…
We show that the general theory of relativity can be formulated in the language of Weyl geometry. We develop the concept of Weyl frames and point out that the new mathematical formalism may lead to different pictures of the same gravitational phenomena. We show that in an arbitrary Weyl frame general relativity, which takes the form of a scalar-tensor gravitational theory, is invariant with respect to Weyl tranformations. A kew point in the development of the formalism is to build an action that is manifestly invariant with respect to Weyl transformations. When this action is expressed in term…
On the basis of the Poincare-Weyl gauge theory of gravitation, a new conformal Weyl-Dirac theory of gravitation is proposed, which is a gravitational theory in Cartan-Weyl spacetime with the Dirac scalar field representing the dark matter model. A static approximate axially symmetric solution of the field equations in vacuum is obtained. On the base of this solution in the Newtonian approximation one considers the problem of rotation velocities in spiral components of galaxies.
This paper presents the detailed, standard treatment of a simple, gauge invariant action for Weyl and Weyl-like Cartan geometries outlined in a previous paper. In addition to the familiar scalar curvature squared and Maxwell terms, the action chosen contains the logarithmic derivative of the scalar curvature combined with the intrinsic four vector (Weyl vector) in a gauge invariant fashion. This introduces higher order derivative terms directly into the action. No separate, "matter" fields are introduced. As the usual Weyl metric and four vector are varied, certain gauge invariant combinations…
It is shown that in a quadratic gravity based on Weyl's conformal geometry, not only the Einstein-Hilbert action emerges but also a Weyl gauge field becomes massive in the Weyl gauge condition, $\tilde R = k$, for a Weyl gauge symmetry within the framework of the BRST formalism. We also consider a more general gravitational theory with a scalar field in the Weyl geometry and see that the Einstein-Hilbert action can be induced from spontaneous symmetry breakdown of the Weyl gauge symmetry. Thus, it turns out that Weyl's conformal gravity is quantum mechanically equivalent to Einstein's general …
A crucial property of Weyl gravity is its conformal invariance. It is shown how this gauge symmetry is exactly reflected by the two constraints in the Hamiltonian framework. Since the spatial 3-metric is one of the configuration variables, the phase space of Weyl gravity can be extended to include internal gauge freedom by triad formalism. Moreover, by canonical transformations, we obtain two new Hamiltonian formulations of Weyl gravity with an SU(2) connection as one of its configuration variables. The connection-dynamical formalisms lay the foundation to quantize Weyl gravity nonperturbative…
The background field method is used to linearize the Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity, coupled with a Stueckelberg field. For a generic background metric, this action is found to be not invariant, under both diffeomorphism and generalized Weyl symmetry, the latter being a combination of gauge and Weyl transformations. Interestingly, the quadratic Lagrangian, emerging from a background of Minkowski metric, respects both the transformations, independently. Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry of scalar-tensor gravity coupled with a Stueckelberg-like massive gauge particle, possessing di…
Issuing from a geometry with nonmetricity and torsion we build up a classical theory of gravitation and electromagnetism. The theory is coordinate covariant as well Weyl-gauge covariant. Massless and massive photons, intrinsic electr. and magn. currents exist in this framework. The field EQ-s and EQ-s of motion are derived from a geometrically based action. It is shown that the magn.-magn. interaction is transmitted by massive photons. A magn. charge (monopole) cannot be located together with an electr. one. In absence of torsion and in the Einstein gauge one obtains the Einstein-Maxwell theor…
We use a de Sitter breaking graviton propagator to compute the tree order correlator between noncoincident Weyl tensors on a locally de Sitter background. An explicit, and very simple result is obtained, for any spacetime dimension D, in terms of a de Sitter invariant length function and the tensor basis constructed from the metric and derivatives of this length function. Our answer does not agree with the one derived previously by Kouris, but that result must be incorrect because it not transverse and lacks some of the algebraic symmetries of the Weyl tensor. Taking the coincidence limit of o…
The two-point Wightman function of the free photon field defined in a gauge-invariant manner is known to be equivalent to the field-strength two-point function in any spacetime that is topologically trivial. We show that the gauge-invariant graviton two-point function defined in a similar manner is equivalent to the Weyl-tensor two-point function in Minkowski space and in the Poincare patch of de Sitter space. This implies that in the Poincare patch of de Sitter space the gauge-invariant graviton two-point function decays like (distance)^(-4) as a function of coordinate distance for spacelike …
We present the BRST formalism of a Weyl conformal gravity in Weyl geometry. Choosing the extended de Donder gauge-fixing condition (or harmonic gauge condition) for the general coordinate invariance and the new scalar gauge-fixing for the Weyl invariance we find that there is a Poincar${\rm{\acute{e}}}$-like $\IOSp(10|10)$ supersymmetry as in a Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity in Riemann geometry. We also point out that there is a gravitational conformal symmetry in quantum gravity although there is a massive Weyl gauge field as a result of spontaneous symmetry breakdown of Weyl gauge symm…
We consider Weyl's conformal gravity coupled to a complex matter field in Weyl geometry. It is shown that a Higgs potential naturally arises from a $\tilde R^2$ term in moving from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame. A massless Nambu-Goldstone boson, which stems from spontaneous symmetry breakdown of the Weyl gauge invariance, is absorbed into the Weyl gauge field, thereby the gauge field becoming massive. We present a model where the gravitational interaction generates a Higgs potential whose form is a perfect square. Finally, we show that a theory in the Jordan frame is gauge-equivalent …
Recently a generalization of the Fefferman-Graham gauge for asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes, called the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham (WFG) gauge, has been proposed. It was shown that the WFG gauge induces a Weyl geometry on the conformal boundary. The Weyl geometry consists of a metric and a Weyl connection. Thus, this is a useful setting for studying dual field theories with background Weyl symmetry. Working in the WFG formalism, we find the generalization of obstruction tensors, which are Weyl-covariant tensors that appear as poles in the Fefferman-Graham expansion of the bulk metric for even…
We consider Weyl gauge theories of gravity (WGTs), which are invariant both under local Poincaré transformations and local changes of scale. Such theories may be interpreted as gauge theories in Minkowski spacetime, but their gravitational interactions are most often reinterpreted geometrically in terms of a Weyl--Cartan spacetime, in which any matter fields then reside. Such a spacetime is a straightforward generalisation of Weyl spacetime to include torsion. As first suggested by Einstein, Weyl spacetime is believed to exhibit a so-called second clock effect, which prevents the existence of …
Motivated by the Weyl scaling gauge symmetry, we present a theoretical framework to explain cosmic inflation and dark matter simultaneously. This symmetry has been resurrected in recent attempts to formulate the gauge theory of gravity. We show the inspired inflation model is well consistent with current observations and will be probed further by future experiments. Furthermore, we clarify and prove the stability of Weyl gauge boson in the general theory with multiple scalars. We show the massive Weyl gauge boson can be a dark matter candidate and give the correct relic abundance.
We discuss the physics of a restricted Weyl symmetry in a curved space-time where a gauge parameter $Ω(x)$ of Weyl transformation satisfies a constraint $\Box Ω= 0$. First, we present a model of QED where we have a restricted gauge symmetry in the sense that a $U(1)$ gauge parameter $θ(x)$ obeys a similar constraint $\Box θ= 0$ in a flat Minkowski space-time. Next, it is precisely shown that a global scale symmetry must be spontaneously broken at the quantum level. Finally, we discuss the origin of the restricted Weyl symmetry and show that its symmetry can be derived from a full Weyl symmetry…
Weyl conformal geometry may play a role in early cosmology where effective theory at short distances becomes conformal. Weyl conformal geometry also has a built-in geometric Stueckelberg mechanism: it is broken spontaneously to Riemannian geometry after a Weyl gauge transformation (of "gauge fixing") while Stueckelberg mechanism re-arranges the degrees of freedom, conserving their number ($n_{df}$). The Weyl gauge field ($ω_μ$) of local scale transformations acquires a mass after absorbing a compensator (dilaton), decouples, and Weyl connection becomes Riemannian. Mass generation has thus a dy…
We investigate the relationship between quadratic gravity and a restricted Weyl symmetry where a gauge parameter $Ω(x)$ of Weyl transformation satisfies a constraint $\Box Ω= 0$ in a curved space-time. First, we briefly review a model with a restricted gauge symmetry on the basis of QED where a $U(1)$ gauge parameter $θ(x)$ obeys a similar constraint $\Box θ= 0$ in a flat Minkowski space-time, and explain that the restricted gauge symmetry removes one on-shell mode of gauge field, which together with the Feynman gauge leaves only two transverse polarizations as physical states. Next, it is sho…
We investigated the possibility of construction the homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions in Weyl geometry. We derived the self-consistency condition which ensures the conformal invariance of the complete set of equations of motion. There is the special gauge in choosing the conformal factor when the Weyl vector equals zero. In this gauge we found new vacuum cosmological solutions absent in General Relativity. Also, we found new solution in Weyl geometry for the radiation dominated universe with the cosmological term, corresponding to the constant curvature scalar in our special gau…
We introduce a new gauge and solution space for three-dimensional gravity. As its name Bondi-Weyl suggests, it leads to non-trivial Weyl charges, and uses Bondi-like coordinates to allow for an arbitrary cosmological constant and therefore spacetimes which are asymptotically locally (A)dS or flat. We explain how integrability requires a choice of integrable slicing and also the introduction of a corner term. After discussing the holographic renormalization of the action and of the symplectic potential, we show that the charges are finite, symplectic and integrable, yet not conserved. We find f…
In the present work we show that planetary mean distances can be calculated through considering the Weyl geometry. We interpret the Weyl gauge field as a vector field associated with the hypercharge of the particles and apply the gauge concept of the Weyl geometry. The results obtained are shown to agree with the observed orbits of all the planets and of the asteroid belt in the solar system, with some empty states.
A common biquadratic potential for the Higgs field $h$ and an additional scalar field $ϕ$, non minimally coupled to gravity, is considered in locally scale symmetric approaches to standard model fields in curved spacetime. A common ground state of the two scalar fields exists and couples both fields to gravity, more precisely to scalar curvature $R$. In Einstein gauge ($ϕ= const$, often called "Einstein frame"), also $R$ is scaled to a constant. This condition makes perfect sense, even in the general case, in the Weyl geometric approach. There it has been called {\em Weyl gauge}, because it wa…
This article is dedicated to the analysis of Weyl symmetry in the context of relativistic hydrodynamics. Here is discussed how this symmetry is properly implemented using the prescription of minimal coupling: $\partial\to \partial +ω\mathcal{A}$. It is shown that this prescription has no problem to deal with curvature since it gives the correct expressions for the commutator of covariant derivatives. In the hydrodynamics the Weyl gauge connection emerges from the degrees of freedom of the fluid: it is a combination of the expansion and entropy gradient. The remaining degrees of the fluid and t…
The Weyl double copy relates exact solutions in general relativity to exact solutions in gauge theory, formulated in the spinorial language. To date, the Weyl double copy is understood and employed only for vacuum spacetimes, and hence only to vacuum gauge theories. In this letter, we propose an extension to the Weyl double copy that provides a systematic procedure for treating gravitational sources. We show this extended Weyl double copy gives a new perspective on the Kerr-Newman black hole and the general class of Petrov type D electro-vac spacetimes.
A massless electroweak theory for leptons is formulated in a Weyl space, W_4, yielding a Weyl invariant gauge dynamics allowing for conformal rescalings of the metric and all fields with nonvanishing Weyl weight together with the corresponding transformations of the Weyl vector fields representing the D(1) or dilatation gauge fields. To study the appearance of nonzero masses this theory is explicitly broken by a term in the Lagrangean involving the curvature scalar R of the W_4 and a mass term for the scalar field. Thereby also the gauge fields as well as the charged fermion field acquire a ma…
We investigate the particle content of parity-preserving Weyl gauge theories of gravity (WGT$^+$) about a Minkowski background. Within a subset of the full theory, we use a systematic method previously presented in [arXiv:1812.02675] to determine 862 critical cases for which the parameter values in the action lead to additional gauge invariances. We find that 168 of these cases are free of ghosts and tachyons, provided the parameters satisfy certain conditions that we also determine. We further identify 40 of these cases that are also power-counting renormalizable and determine the correspondi…
We study the variational principle over an Hilbert-Einstein like action for an extended geometry taking into account torsion and non-metricity. By extending the semi-Riemannian geometry, we obtain an effective energy-momentum tensor which can be interpreted as physical sources. As an application we develop a new manner to obtain the gravitational wave equations on a Weyl-integrable manifold taking into account the non-metricity and non-trivial boundary conditions on the minimization of the action, which can be identified as possible sources for the cosmological constant and provides two differ…
We develop a manifestly conformal approach to describe linearised (super)conformal higher-spin gauge theories in arbitrary conformally flat backgrounds in three and four spacetime dimensions. Closed-form expressions in terms of gauge prepotentials are given for gauge-invariant higher-spin (super) Cotton and (super) Weyl tensors in three and four dimensions, respectively. The higher-spin (super) Weyl tensors are shown to be conformal primary (super)fields in arbitrary conformal (super)gravity backgrounds, however they are gauge invariant only if the background (super) Weyl tensor vanishes. The …
The well-noted correspondence between gravitation and electrodynamics emphasizes the importance of the Lanczos tensor -- the potential of the Weyl tensor -- which is an inherent structural element of any metric theory of gravity formulated in a 4-dimensional pseudo Riemannian spacetime. However, this ingenious discovery has gone largely unnoticed. We elucidate this important quantity by deriving its expressions in some particularly chosen spacetimes and try to find out what it represents actually. We find out that the Lanczos potential tensor does not represent the potential of the gravitation…
