The relativistic time evolution of multi-layer spherically symmetric shell systems---consisting of infinitely thin shells separated by vacuum regions---is examined. Whenever two shells collide the evolution is continued with the assumption that the collision is totally transparent. The time evolution of various multi-layer shell systems---comprised by large number of shells thereby mimicking the behavior of a thick shell making it possible to study the formation of acoustic singularities---is analyzed numerically and compared in certain cases to the corresponding Newtonian time evolution. The analytic setup is chosen such that the developed code is capable of following the evolution even inside the black hole region. This, in particular, allowed us to investigate the mass inflation phenomenon in the chosen framework.
We analytically explore the effect of falling matter on a spherically symmetric wormhole supported by a spherical shell composed of exotic matter located at its throat. The falling matter is assumed to be also a thin spherical shell concentric with the shell supporting the wormhole, and its self-gravity is completely taken into account. We treat these spherical thin shells by Israel's formalism of metric junction. When the falling spherical shell goes through the wormhole, it necessarily collides with the shell supporting the wormhole. To treat this collision, we assume the interaction between…
We consider a static spherically symmetric thin shell wormhole collides with another thin shell consisting of ordinary matter. By employing the geometrical constraint, which leads to the conservation of energy and momentum, we show that the state after the collision can be solved from the initial data. In the low speed approximation, the solutions are rather simple. The shell may either bounce back or pass through the wormhole. In either case, the wormhole shrinks right after the collision. In the "bouncing" case, a surprising result is that the radial speeds before and after the collision sat…
Dynamics of a null thin shell immersed in a generic spherically symmetric spacetime is obtained within the distributional formalism. It has been shown that the distributional formalism leads to the same result as in the conventional formalism.
We investigate the occurrence of shell crossing singularities in quasi-spherical Szekeres dust models with or without a cosmological constant. We study the conditions for shell crossing singularity both from physical and geometrical point of view and they are in agreement.
We consider a spherical thick shell immersed in two different spherically symmetric space-times. Using the fact that the boundaries of the thick shell with two embedding space-times must be nonsingular hypersurfaces, we develop a scheme to obtain the underlying equation of motion for the thick shell in general. As a simple example, the equation of motion of a spherical dustlike shell in vacuum is obtained. To compare our formalism with the thin shell one, the dynamical equation of motion of the thick shell is then expanded to the first order of its thickness. It is easily seen that the thin sh…
A family of spherical shells with varying thickness is derived by using a simple Newtonian potential-density pair. Then, a particular isotropic form of a metric in spherical coordinates is used to construct a General Relativistic version of the Newtonian family of shells. The matter of these relativistic shells presents equal azimuthal and polar pressures, while the radial pressure is a constant times the tangential pressure. We also make a first study of stability of both the Newtonian and relativistic families of shells.
We study the dynamics of charged, spherically symmetric dust shells in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We find generalizations of the well-known solutions in asymptotically flat spacetime, in particular orbits into "parallel universes", but also new solutions corresponding to a "bounce" of the shell before an event horizon has formed. We also discuss "bubble" solutions, in which a charged shell and an oppositely charged singularity are spontaneously created and annihilated.
Interaction / collision of two concentric spherical thin-shells of linear fluid resulting in collapse has been considered recently. We show that addition of finely tuned electric charges on the shells apart from the cosmological constant serves to delay the collapse indefinitely, yielding an ever colliding system of two concentric fluid shells. Given the finely tuned charges this provides an example of a perpetual two-body motion in general relativity.
In this work, shells are mathematically constructed by applying the cut and paste procedure to D-dimensional spherically symmetric geometries. The weak energy condition for the matter on the shells is briefly analyzed. The dynamical evolution is studied, and the general formalism for the stability of static solutions is presented. Several examples corresponding to different spacetime dimensions and values of the parameters are considered.
We model the collapse of a spherically symmetric, constant density, pressureless shell onto a preexisting black hole. Contrary to a recent claim of Liu and Zhang (2009), we show that an observer at infinity never sees any part of the shell cross the event horizon. The entire shell appears to "freeze" outside the black hole. We find that during intermediate stages of the collapse, the change in apparent size of the inner surface is non-monotonic. However, at late times, the apparent sizes of the inner and outer surfaces of the shell both approach 3\sqrt{3}GM/c^2 asymptotically, where M is the c…
The Casimir stress on a spherical shell in de Sitter background for massless scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on the shell is calculated. The metric is written in conformally flat form. Although the metric is time dependent no particles are created. The Casimir stress is calculated for inside and outside of the shell with different backgrounds corresponding to different cosmological constants. The detail dynamics of the bubble depends on different parameter of the model. Specifically, bubbles with true vacuum inside expand if the difference in the vacuum energies is small,…
A simple and direct, based on the equations of motion, derivation of the variational principle and effective actions for a spherical charged dust shell in general relativity is offered. This principle is based on the relativistic version of the DÆAlembert principle of virtual displacements and leads to the effective actions for the shell, which describe the shell from the point of view of the exterior or interior stationary observers. Herewith, sides of the shell are considered independently, in the coordinates of the interior or exterior region of the shell. Canonical variables for a charged …
In this paper, we consider the Casimir energy of massless scalar field which satisfy Dirichlet boundary condition on a spherical shell. Outside the shell, the spacetime is assumed to be described by the Schwarzschild metric, while inside the shell it is taken to be the flat Minkowski space. Using zeta function regularization and heat kernel coefficients we isolate the divergent contributions of the Casimir energy inside and outside the shell, then using the renormalization procedure of the bag model the divergent parts are cancelled, finally obtaining a renormalized expression for the total Ca…
The variational principle for a spherical configuration consisting of a thin spherical dust shell in gravitational field is constructed. The principle is consistent with the boundary-value problem of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations, and leads to ``natural boundary conditions''. These conditions and the field equations following from the variational principle are used for performing of the reduction of this system. The equations of motion for the shell follow from the obtained reduced action. The transformation of the variational formula for the reduced action leads to two natural va…
In this article, the stability of a general class of spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes is studied under perturbations preserving the symmetry. For this purpose, the equation of state at the throat is linearized around the static solutions. The formalism presented here is applied to dilaton wormholes and it is found that there is a smaller range of possible stable configurations for them than in the case of Reissner-Nordstrom wormholes with the same charge.
A spherical planetary nebula is described as a geometric model. The nebula itself is considered as a thin-shell which visualized as a boundary of two spacetimes. The inner and outer curvature tensors of the thin-shell are found in order to get an expression of the energy-momentum tensor on the thin-shell. The energy density and pressure expressions are derived using the energy-momentum tensor. The time evolution of the radius of the thin-shell is obtained in terms of the energy density. The model is tested by using a simple power function for decreasing energy density and the evolution pattern…
In this paper we consider a semitetrad covariant decomposition of spherically symmetric spacetimes and find a governing hyperbolic equation of the Gaussian curvature of two dimensional spherical shells, that emerges due to the decomposition. The restoration factor of this hyperbolic travelling wave equation allows us to construct a geometric measure of complexity. This measure depends critically on the Gaussian curvature, and we demonstrate this geometric connection to complexity for the first time. We illustrate the utility of this measure by classifying well known spherically symmetric metri…
By starting with a seed Newtonian potential-density pair we construct relativistic thick spherical shell models for a Majumdar-Papapetrou type conformastatic spacetime. As a simple example, we consider a family of Plummer-Hernquist type relativistic spherical shells. As a second application, these structures are then used to model a system composite by a dust disk and a halo of matter. We study the equatorial circular motion of test particles around such configurations. Also the stability of the orbits is analyzed for radial perturbation using an extension of the Rayleigh criterion. The models…
A family of potential-density pairs that represent spherical shells with finite thickness is obtained from the superposition of spheres with finite radii. Other families of shells with infinite thickness with a central hole are obtained by inversion transformations of spheres and of the finite shells. We also present a family of double shells with finite thickness. All potential-density pairs are analytical and can be stated in terms of elementary functions. For the above-mentioned structures, we study the circular orbits of test particles and their stability with respect to radial perturbatio…
We study the self force acting on static electric or scalar charges inside or outside a spherical, massive, thin shell. The regularization of the self force is done using the recently-proposed Mode Sum Regularization Prescription. In all cases the self force acting on the charge is repulsive. We find that in the scalar case the force is quadratic in the mass of the shell, and is a second post-Newtonian effect. For the electric case the force is linear in the shell's mass, and is a first post-Newtonian effect. When the charge is outside the shell our results correct the known zero self force in…
A novel Hamiltonian description of the dynamics of a spherically symmetric, light-like, self-gravitating shell is presented. It is obtained via the systematic reduction of the phase space with respect to the Gauss-Codazzi constraints, model and rare procedure in the Canonical Gravity. The Hamiltonian of the system (numerically equal to the value of the ADM mass) is explicitly calculated in terms of the gauge-invariant "true degrees of freedom", i.e. as a function on the reduced phase space. A geometric interpretation of the momentum canonically conjugate to the shell's radius is given. Models …
The purpose of this paper is to construct spherical thin-shell wormhole solutions through cut and paste technique and investigate the stability of these solutions in the vicinity of modified Chaplygin gas. The Darmois-Israel formalism is used to formulate the stresses of the surface concentrating the exotic matter. We explore the stability of the wormhole solutions by using the standard potential method. We conclude that there exist more stable as well as unstable solutions than the previous study with generalized Chaplygin gas \cite{15}.
We present a broad class of spherical thin shells of matter in F(R) gravity. We show that the corresponding junction conditions determine the equation of state between the energy density and the pressure/tension at the surface. We analyze the stability of the static configurations under perturbations preserving the symmetry. We apply the formalism to the construction of charged bubbles and we find that there exist stable static configurations for a suitable set of the parameters of the model.
The general exact solution of the Einstein-matter field equations describing spherically symmetric shells satisfying an equation of state in closed form is discussed under general assumptions of physical reasonableness. The solutions split into two classes: a class of "astro-physically interesting" solutions describing "ordinary" matter with positive density and pressure, and a class of "phantom-like" solutions with positive density but negative active gravitational mass, which can also be of interest in several "very strong fields" regimes. Known results on linear-barotropic equations of stat…
By a spherical gravitating condenser we mean two concentric charged shells made of perfect fluids restricted by the condition that the electric field is nonvanishing only between the shells. Flat space is assumed inside the inner shell. By using Israel's formalism we first analyze the general system of N shells and then concentrate on the two-shell condensers. Energy conditions are taken into account; physically interesting cases are summarized in two tables, but also more exotic situations in which, for example, the inner shell may occur below the inner horizon of the corresponding Reissner-N…
A perturbing shell is introduced as a device for studying the excitation of fluid motions in relativistic stellar models. We show that this approach allows a reasonably clean separation of radiation from the shell and from fluid motions in the star, and provides broad flexibility in the location and timescale of perturbations driving the fluid motions. With this model we compare the relativistic and Newtonian results for the generation of even parity gravitational waves from constant density models. Our results suggest that relativistic effects will not be important in computations of the grav…
We review some applications of relativistic shells that are relevant in the context of quantum gravity/quantum cosmology. Using a recently developed approach, the stationary states of this general relativistic system can be determined in the semiclassical approximation. We suggest that this technique might be of phenomenological relevance in the context of the brane-world scenario and we draw a picture of the general set-up and of the possible developments.
We consider thin spherical shells of matter in both Newtonian gravity and general relativity, and examine their equilibrium configurations and dynamical stability. Thin-shell models are admittedly a poor substitute for realistic stellar models. But the simplicity of the equations that govern their dynamics, compared with the much more complicated mechanics of a self-gravitating fluid, allows us to deliver, in a very direct and easy manner, powerful insights regarding their equilibria and stability. We explore, in particular, the link between the existence of a maximum mass along a sequence of …
We give a characterization of the central shell-focusing curvature singularity that can form in the spherical gravitational collapse of a bounded matter distribution obeying the dominant energy condition. This characterization is based on the limiting behaviour of the mass function in the neighbourhood of the singularity. Depending on the rate of growth of the mass as a function of the area radius R, the singularity may be either covered or naked. The singularity is naked if this growth rate is slower than R, covered if it is faster than R, and either naked or covered if the growth rate is sam…
The quasi-spherical Szekeres dust solutions are a generalization of the spherically symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi dust models where the spherical shells of constant mass are non-concentric. The quasi-spherical Szekeres dust solutions can be considered as cosmological models and are potentially models for the formation of primordial black holes in the early universe. Any collapsing quasi-spherical Szekeres dust solution where an apparent horizon covers all shell-crossings that will occur can be considered as a model for the formation of a black hole. In this paper we will show that the appare…
Thin shells in general relativity have been used in the past as keystones to obtain realistic models of cosmological and astrophysical situations. A crucial role for these developments was played by the compact description of their dynamics in terms of Israel's junction conditions. Starting from this geometrical formulation we present a problem related to the WKB regime of shell dynamics and suggest a possible solution.
We introduce the redshift spherical shell energy (RSSE), which can be used to test in the redshift space the radial inhomogeneity of an isotropic universe, providing additional constraints for LTB models, and a more general test of cosmic homogeneity.
A new exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for the gravitational collapse of a shell of matter in an already formed black hole is given. Both the shell and the black hole are endowed with electromagnetic structure and are assumed spherically symmetric. Implications for current research are outlined.
We summarize the general formalism describing surface flows in three-dimensional space in a form which is suitable for various astrophysical applications. We then apply the formalism to the analysis of non-radial perturbations of self-gravitating spherical fluid shells. Spherically symmetric gravitating shells (or bubbles) have been used in numerous model problems especially in general relativity and cosmology. A radially oscillating shell was recently suggested as a model for a variable cosmic object. Within Newtonian gravity we show that self-gravitating static fluid shells are unstable with…
We analyse the dynamics of trapped matter shells in spherically symmetric inhomogeneous Λ-CDM models. The investigation uses a Generalised Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi description with initial conditions subject to the constraints of having spatially asymptotic cosmological expansion, initial Hubble-type flow and a regular initial density distribution. We discuss the effects of shell crossing and use a qualitative description of the local trapped matter shells to explore global properties of the models. Once shell crossing occurs, we find a splitting of the global shells separating expansion from col…
We adopt a simplified model describing the collapse of a spherical thin-shell capacitor to give an analytical description how gravitational energy is converted to both kinetic and electric energies in the gravitational collapse. It is shown that (i) averaged kinetic and electric energies are the same order, about an half of gravitational energy of spherical thin-shell capacitor in the collapse; (ii) caused by radiating and rebuilding electric energy, the gravitational collapse undergoes a sequence of "on and off" hopping steps in the microscopic Compton scale. Although the collapse process is …
Galileon radiation in the collapse of a thin spherical shell of matter is analyzed. In the framework of a cubic Galileon theory, we compute the field profile produced at large distances by a short collapse, finding that the radiated field has two peaks traveling ahead of light fronts. The total energy radiated during the collapse follows a power law scaling with the shell's physical width and results from two competing effects: a Vainshtein suppression of the emission and an enhancement due to the thinness of the shell.
We consider the construction of generic spherically symmetric thin-shell traversable wormhole spacetimes in standard general relativity. By using the cut-and-paste procedure, we comprehensively analyze the stability of arbitrary spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes to linearized spherically symmetric perturbations around static solutions. While a number of special cases have previously been dealt with in scattered parts of the literature, herein we take considerable effort to make the analysis as general and unified as practicable. We demonstrate in full generality that stability of the …
We present a partial differential equation describing the electromagnetic potentials around a charge distribution undergoing rigid motion at constant proper acceleration, and obtain a set of solutions to this equation. These solutions are used to find the self-force exactly in a chosen case. The electromagnetic self-force for a spherical shell of charge of proper radius $R$ undergoing rigid motion at constant proper acceleration $a_0$ is, to high order approximation, $ (2 e^2 a_0/R) \sum_{n=0}^\infty (a_0 R)^{2n} ((2n-1)(2n+1)^2(2n+3))^{-1} $, and this is conjectured to be exact.
We demonstrate the existence of static stable spherical fluid shells in the Schwarzschild-Rindler-anti-de Sitter (SRAdS) spacetime where $ds^2 = f(r)dt^{2} -\frac{dr^{2}}{f(r)}-r^{2}(dθ^2 +\sin ^2 θdϕ^2)$ with $f(r) = 1 -\frac{2Gm}{r} + 2 b r -\fracΛ{3}r^2$. This is an alternative to the well known gravastar geometry where the stability emerges due to the combination of the repulsive forces of the interior de Sitter space with the attractive forces of the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime. In the SRAdS spacetime the repulsion that leads to stability of the shell comes from a negative Rindler te…
We show that, at first order in the angular velocity, the general relativistic description of Rossby-Haurwitz waves (the analogues of r-waves on a thin shell) can be obtained from the corresponding Newtonian one after a coordinate transformation. As an application, we show that the results recently obtained by Rezzolla and Yoshida (2001) in the analysis of Newtonian Rossby-Haurwitz waves of a slowly and differentially rotating, fluid shell apply also in General Relativity, at first order in the angular velocity.
We obtain the fields and electromagnetic self-force of a charge distributed on the surface of a sphere undergoing rigid motion at constant proper acceleration, where the charge distribution has axial symmetry about the direction of motion. A closed-form expression for the self-force is given in terms of the multipole moments of the charge distribution. Applications to the electrodynamics of a dipole, and to electromagnetic self-force near a horizon (in spacetime) are discussed.
We investigate negative tension branes as stable thin shell wormholes in Reissner-Nordstrom-(anti) de Sitter spacetimes in $d$ dimensional Einstein gravity. Imposing Z2 symmetry, we construct and classify traversable static thin shell wormholes in spherical, planar (or cylindrical) and hyperbolic symmetries. In spherical geometry, we find the higher dimensional counterpart of Barcelo and Visser's wormholes, which are stable against spherically symmetric perturbations. We also find the classes of thin shell wormholes in planar and hyperbolic symmetries with a negative cosmological constant, whi…
Based on recently reported results, we present arguments that sign changes in proper acceleration of test particles on the symmetry axis and close to the r=2M surface of quasi-spherical objects - related to the quadrupole moment of the source - might be at the origin of relativistic jets of quasars and micro-quasars.
Spherical energy shells in General Relativity tend to collapse due to gravitational effects and/or due to tension effects. Shell stabilization may be achieved by modifying the gravitational properties of the background spacetime. Thus, gravastars consist of stiff matter shells with an interior deSitter space and an exterior Schwarzshild spacetime whose attractive gravity balances the interior repulsive gravity of the interior deSitter spacetime leading to a stable stiff matter shell. Similar stabilization effects may be achieved by considering rotating shells. Here we study the stability of sl…
We investigate the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and the fermionic condensate associated with a massive spinor field obeying the MIT bag boundary condition on a spherical shell in the global monopole spacetime. In order to do that it was used the generalized Abel-Plana summation formula. As we shall see, this procedure allows to extract from the vacuum expectation values the contribution coming from to the unbounded spacetime and explicitly to present the boundary induced parts. As to the boundary induced contribution, two distinct situations are examined: the vacuum …
