A novel Hamiltonian description of the dynamics of a spherically symmetric, light-like, self-gravitating shell is presented. It is obtained via the systematic reduction of the phase space with respect to the Gauss-Codazzi constraints, model and rare procedure in the Canonical Gravity. The Hamiltonian of the system (numerically equal to the value of the ADM mass) is explicitly calculated in terms of the gauge-invariant "true degrees of freedom", i.e. as a function on the reduced phase space. A geometric interpretation of the momentum canonically conjugate to the shell's radius is given. Models of matter compatible with the shell dynamics are found. A transformation between the different time parameterizations of the shell is calculated. The presented model may become a new toy model of quantum gravity.
We have calculated a discrete spectrum and found an exact analytical solution in the form of Meixner polynomials for the wave function of a thin gravitating shell in the Reissner-Nordstrom geometry. We show that there is no extreme state in the quantum spectrum of the gravitating shell, as in the case of extreme black hole.
In the case of crossing thin dust shells the momentum conservation law is found. For two crossing isotropic shells it coincides with the 't Hooft-Dray formula. The system of one isotropic and one time-like shell is considered. In this case we found a very simple formula which relate velocities of dust shell before and after crossing.
We describe the equation of motion of two charged spherical shells with tangential pressure in the field of a central Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) source. We solve the problem of determining the motion of the two shells \textsl{after} the intersection by solving the related Einstein-Maxwell equations and by requiring a physical continuity condition on the shells velocities. We consider also four applications: post-Newtonian and ultra-relativistic approximations, a test-shell case, and the ejection mechanism of one shell. This work is a direct generalization of Barkov-Belinski-Bisnovati-Kogan paper.
The study of the two shell system started in our first paper ``Pair of null gravitating shells I'' (gr-qc/0112060) is continued. An action functional for a single shell due to Louko, Whiting and Friedman is generalized to give appropriate equations of motion for two and, in fact, any number of spherically symmetric null shells, including the cases when the shells intersect. In order to find the symplectic structure for the space of solutions described in paper I, the pull back to the constraint surface of the Liouville form determined by the action is transformed into new variables. They consi…
Dynamics of a self-gravitating shell of matter is derived from the Hilbert variational principle and then described as an (infinite dimensional, constrained) Hamiltonian system. A method used here enables us to define singular Riemann tensor of a non-continuous connection {\em via} standard formulae of differential geometry, with derivatives understood in the sense of distributions. Bianchi identities for the singular curvature are proved. They match the conservation laws for the singular energy-momentum tensor of matter. Rosenfed-Belinfante and Noether theorems are proved to be still valid in…
The study of the two-shell system started in ``Pair of null gravitating shells I and II'' (gr-qc/0112060--061) is continued. The pull back of the Liouville form to the constraint surface, which contains complete information about the Poisson brackets of Dirac observables, is computed in the singular double-null Eddington-Finkelstein (DNEF) gauge. The resulting formula shows that the variables conjugate to the Schwarzschild masses of the intershell spacetimes are simple combinations of the values of the DNEF coordinates on these spacetimes at the shells. The formula is valid for any number of i…
For the example of an accelerated shell we show that omission of the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) of the body that causes the acceleration and the tensions due to this acceleration can lead to a paradoxical result; Namely, the entrainment of an inertial frame by the accelerated shell in the direction opposite to that of the acceleration. We consider several models and demonstrate that the correct result can be obtained only if all components of the full EMT are adequately taken into account, and the problem statement is physically correct.
The dynamical stability of massive thin shells with a given equation of state (EOS) is here compared (both for the barotropic and non-barotropic case) with the results coming from thermodynamical stability. Our results show that the restrictions in the parameter space of equilibrium configurations of the shell following from thermodynamical stability are much more stringent that those obtained from dynamical stability. As a byproduct, we furnish evidence that the link between the maximum mass along a sequence of equilibrium configurations and the onset of dynamical stability is valid for EOS o…
A complete Lagrangian and Hamiltonian description of the theory of self-gravitating light-like matter shells is given in terms of gauge-independent geometric quantities. For this purpose the notion of an extrinsic curvature for a null-like hypersurface is discussed and the corresponding Gauss-Codazzi equations are proved. These equations imply Bianchi identities for spacetimes with null-like, singular curvature. Energy-momentum tensor-density of a light-like matter shell is unambiguously defined in terms of an invariant matter Lagrangian density. Noether identity and Belinfante-Rosenfeld theor…
By a spherical gravitating condenser we mean two concentric charged shells made of perfect fluids restricted by the condition that the electric field is nonvanishing only between the shells. Flat space is assumed inside the inner shell. By using Israel's formalism we first analyze the general system of N shells and then concentrate on the two-shell condensers. Energy conditions are taken into account; physically interesting cases are summarized in two tables, but also more exotic situations in which, for example, the inner shell may occur below the inner horizon of the corresponding Reissner-N…
In this paper we show that thin shells in spherically symmetric spacetimes, whose matter content is described by a pair of non-interacting spherically symmetric matter fields, generically exhibit instability against an infinitesimal separation of its constituent fields. We give explicit examples and construct solutions that represent a shell that splits into two shells. Then we extend those results for 5-dimensional Schwarzschild-AdS bulk spacetimes, which is a typical scenario for brane-world models, and show that the same kind of stability analysis and splitting solution can be constructed. …
The post-Newtonian Jeans equation for stationary self-gravitating systems is derived from the post-Newtonian Boltzmann equation in spherical coordinates. The Jeans equation is coupled with the three Poisson equations from the post-Newtonian theory. The Poisson equations are functions of the energy-momentum tensor components which are determined from the post-Newtonian Maxwell--Jüttner distribution function. As an application, the effect of a central massive black hole on the velocity dispersion profile of the host galaxy is investigated and the influence of the post-Newtonian corrections are d…
We investigate quantum dynamics of self-gravitating spherical dust shell. The wave functions of discrete spectrum are not localized inside the Schwarzschild radius. We argue that such shells can transform into white holes (in another space). It is plausible that shells with bare masses larger than the Planck mass loose their mass emitting lighter shells.
The motion with intersections of relativistic gravitating shells in the Schwarzschild gravitational field of a central body is considered. Formulas are derived for calculating parameters of the shells after intersection via their parameters before intersection. Such special cases as the Newtonian approximation, intersections of light shells, and intersections of a test shell with a gravitating shell are also considered. The ejection of one of the shells to infinity in the relativistic region is described. The equations of motion for the shells are analyzed numerically.
The dynamical system constituted by two spherically symmetric thin shells and their own gravitational field is studied. The shells can be distinguished from each other, and they can intersect. At each intersection, they exchange energy on the Dray, 't Hooft and Redmount formula. There are bound states: if the shells intersect, one, or both, external shells can be bound in the field of internal shells. The space of all solutions to classical dynamical equations has six components; each has the trivial topology but a non trivial boundary. Points within each component are labeled by four paramete…
We study equilibrium states in relativistic galactic dynamics which are described by solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system for collisionless matter. We recast the equations into a regular three-dimensional system of autonomous first order ordinary differential equations on a bounded state space. Based on a dynamical systems analysis we derive new theorems that guarantee that the steady state solutions have finite radii and masses.
We summarize the general formalism describing surface flows in three-dimensional space in a form which is suitable for various astrophysical applications. We then apply the formalism to the analysis of non-radial perturbations of self-gravitating spherical fluid shells. Spherically symmetric gravitating shells (or bubbles) have been used in numerous model problems especially in general relativity and cosmology. A radially oscillating shell was recently suggested as a model for a variable cosmic object. Within Newtonian gravity we show that self-gravitating static fluid shells are unstable with…
We study the quantum mechanics of self-gravitating thin shell collapse by solving the polymerized Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We obtain the energy spectrum and solve the time dependent equation using numerics. In contradistinction to the continuum theory, we are able to consistently quantize the theory for super-Planckian black holes, and find two choices of boundary conditions which conserve energy and probability, as opposed to one in the continuum theory. Another feature unique to the polymer theory is the existence of negative energy stationary states that disappear from the spectrum as the p…
We perform a numerical free evolution of a selfgravitating, spherically symmetric scalar field satisfying the wave equation. The evolution equations can be written in a very simple form and are symmetric hyperbolic in Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. The simplicity of the system allow to display and deal with the typical gauge instability present in these coordinates. The numerical evolution is performed with a standard method of lines fourth order in space and time. The time algorithm is Runge-Kutta while the space discrete derivative is symmetric (non-dissipative). The constraints are pres…
Motivated by the Higgs Inflation scenario, we study static spherically-symmetric solutions of the non-Abelian Higgs model coupled non-minimally to Gravity. We find solutions for the self-gravitating sphaleron as well as monopole-like solutions and study the impact of the non-minimal coupling on their properties. Finally we discuss shortly the possibility that these solutions interact gravitationally with star-like objects like boson stars.
The subject of this paper are spherically symmetric thin shells made of barotropic ideal fluid and moving under the influence of their own gravitational field as well as that of a central black hole; the cosmological constant is assumed to be zero. The general super-Hamiltonian derived in a previous paper is rewritten for this spherically symmetric special case. The dependence of the resulting action on the gravitational variables is trivialized by a transformation due to Kuchař. The resulting variational principle depends only on shell variables, is reparametrization invariant, and includes b…
The dynamics of a spherically symmetric thin shell with arbitrary rest mass and surface tension interacting with a central black hole is studied. A careful investigation of all classical solutions reveals that the value of the radius of the shell and of the radial velocity as an initial datum does not determine the motion of the shell; another configuration space must, therefore, be found. A different problem is that the shell Hamiltonians used in literature are complicated functions of momenta (non-local) and they are gauge dependent. To solve these problems, the existence is proved of a gaug…
We study compact gravitating $Q$-ball, $Q$-shell solutions in a sigma model with the target space $\mathbb{C}P^N$. Models with odd integer $N$ and suitable potential can be parameterized by $N$-th complex scalar fields and they support compact solutions. A coupling with gravity allows for harboring of the Schwarzschild black holes for the $Q$-shell solutions. The energy of the solutions behaves as $E\sim |Q|^{5/6}$, where $Q$ stands for the $U(1)$ Noether charge, for both the gravitating and the black hole solutions.Notable difference from the solutions of the flat space is that upper bound of…
We find a crucial miscalculation in [arXiv:1501.00365 [gr-qc]] which leads to the wrong master equation. This follows that there is no wormhole-like solution for hyperbolic scalar potential and the solution at large distances differs from that of [arXiv:1501.00365 [gr-qc]].
A thin shell of light-like dust with its own gravitational field is studied in the special case of spherical symmetry. The action functional for this system due to Louko, Whiting, and Friedman is reduced to Kuchař form: the new variables are embeddings, their conjugate momenta, and Dirac observables. The concepts of background manifold and covariant gauge fixing, that underlie these variables, are reformulated in a way that implies the uniqueness and gauge invariance of the background manifold. The reduced dynamics describes motion on this background manifold.
The Barrabès-Israel theory of light-like shells in General Relativity is used to show explicitly that in general a light-like shell is accompanied by an impulsive gravitational wave. The gravitational wave is identified by its Petrov Type N contribution to a Dirac delta-function term in the Weyl conformal curvature tensor (with the delta-function singular on the null hypersurface history of the wave and shell). An example is described in which an asymptotically flat static vacuum Weyl space-time experiences a sudden change across a null hypersurface in the multipole moments of its isolated axi…
We find the general solution of equations of motion for self-gravitating spherical null dust as a perturbative series in powers of the outgoing matter energy-momentum tensor, with the lowest order term being the Vaidya solution for the ingoing matter. This is done by representing the null-dust model as a 2d dilaton gravity theory, and by using a symmetry of a pure 2d dilaton gravity to fix the gauge. Quantization of this solution would provide an effective metric which includes the back-reaction for a more realistic black hole evaporation model than the evaporation models studied previously.
We study the thermodynamics of a shell of self-gravitating radiation, bounded by two spherical surfaces. This system provides a consistent model for a gravitating thermal reservoir for different solutions to vacuum Einstein equations in the shell's interior. The latter include black holes and flat space, hence, this model allows for the study of black hole phase transitions. Following the analysis of arXiv:1103.3898 , we show that the inclusion of appropriate entropy terms to the spacetime boundaries (including the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for black hole horizons) leads to a consistent therm…
We studied spherically symmetric solutions in scalar-torsion gravity theories in which a scalar field is coupled to torsion with a derivative coupling. We obtained the general field equations from which we extracted a decoupled master equation, the solution of which leads to the specification of all other unknown functions. We first obtained an exact solution which represents a new wormhole-like solution dressed with a regular scalar field. Then, we found large distance linearized spherically symmetric solutions in which the space asymptotically is AdS.
We present a new covariant, gauge-invariant formalism describing linear metric perturbation fields on any spherically symmetric background in general relativity. The advantage of this formalism relies in the fact that it does not require a decomposition of the perturbations into spherical tensor harmonics. Furthermore, it does not assume the background to be vacuum, nor does it require its staticity. In the particular case of vacuum perturbations, we derive two master equations describing the propagation of arbitrary linear gravitational waves on a Schwarzschild black hole. When decomposed int…
A topological geon is the quotient manifold $M/Z_2$ where $M$ is a static spherically symmetric wormhole having the reflection symmetry with respect to its throat. We distinguish such asymptotically flat solutions of the Einstein equations according to the form of the time-time metric function by using the quadrature formulas of the so-called inverse problem for self-gravitating spherically symmetric scalar fields. We distinguish three types of geon spacetimes and illustrate them by simple examples. We also study possible observational effects associated with bounded geodesic motion near topol…
We prove under certain assumptions no-hair theorems for non-canonical self-gravitating static multiple scalar fields in spherically symmetric spacetimes. It is shown that the only static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat black hole solutions consist of the Schwarzschild metric and a constant multi-scalar map. We also prove that there are no static, horizonless, asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric solutions with static scalar fields and a regular center. The last theorem shows that the static, asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric reflecting compact objects with Neumann…

A gauge and coordinate invariant perturbation theory for self-gravitating non-Abelian gauge fields is developed and used to analyze local uniqueness and linear stability properties of non-Abelian equilibrium configurations. It is shown that all admissible stationary odd-parity excitations of the static and spherically symmetric Einstein-Yang-Mills soliton and black hole solutions have total angular momentum number $\ell = 1$, and are characterized by non-vanishing asymptotic flux integrals. Local uniqueness results with respect to non-Abelian perturbations are also established for the Schwarzs…
The dynamics of a thin spherically symmetric shell of zero-rest-mass matter in its own gravitational field is studied. A form of action principle is used that enables the reformulation of the dynamics as motion on a fixed background manifold. A self-adjoint extension of the Hamiltonian is obtained via the group quantization method. Operators of position and of direction of motion are constructed. The shell is shown to avoid the singularity, to bounce and to re-expand to that asymptotic region from which it contracted; the dynamics is, therefore, truly unitary. If a wave packet is sufficiently …
We consider time dependent problem in perturbative approach for a nonrelativistic inviscid spherically symmetric accretion model where the effect of the gravity of the medium is considered in Newtonian gravity framework. We consider spherically symmetric nonrelativistic accretion, i.e. Bondi accretion with self-gravity. Our approach is perturbative in the linear order of perturbation regime. We introduce linear perturbation over the existing steady state solution of the system. The analysis has two features, one is that the linear perturbation in mass accretion rate in such irrotational invisc…
We develop a simple model for a self-gravitating spherically symmetric relativistic star which begins to collapse from an initially static configuration by dissipating energy in the form of radial heat flow. We utilize the model to show how local anisotropy effects the collapse rate and thermal behaviour of gravitationally evolving systems.
We prove that in the family of static, asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric scalar hairy black holes with the central electric charge, the set of the charge-to-mass ratios has the exact upper bound $3\sqrt{2}/4\approx1.06$.
A static self-gravitating electrically charged spherical thin shell embedded in a (3+1)-dimensional spacetime is used to study the thermodynamic and entropic properties of the corresponding spacetime. Inside the shell, the spacetime is flat, outside it is Reissner-Nordström, and this establishes the energy density, the pressure, and the electric charge in the shell. Imposing that the shell is at a given local temperature and that the first law of thermodynamics holds on the shell one can find the integrability conditions for the temperature and for the thermodynamic electric potential, the the…
We investigate spherically symmetric equilibrium states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, relevant in galactic dynamics. We recast the equations into a regular three-dimensional system of autonomous first order ordinary differential equations on a region with compact closure.Based on a dynamical systems analysis we derive theorems that guarantee that the steady state solutions have finite mass and compact support.
Numerical arguments are presented for the existence of spherically symmetric regular and black hole solutions of the EYMH equations with a negative cosmological constant. These solutions approach asymptotically the anti-de Sitter spacetime. The main properties of the solutions and the differences with respect to the asymptotically flat case are discussed. The instability of the gravitating sphaleron solutions is also proven.
Recently, static and spherically symmetric configurations of globally regular self-gravitating scalar solitons were found. These configurations are unstable with respect to radial linear perturbations. In this paper we study the dynamical evolution of such configurations and show that, depending on the sign of the initial perturbation, the solitons either collapse to a Schwarzschild black hole or else ``explode'' into an outward moving domain wall.
An example is described in which an asymptotically flat static vacuum Weyl space-time experiences a sudden change across a null hypersurface in the multipole moments of its isolated axially symmetric source. A light-like shell and an impulsive gravitational wave are identified, both having the null hypersurface as history. The stress-energy in the shell is dominated (at large distance from the source) by the jump in the monopole moment (the mass) of the source with the jump in the dipole moment mainly responsible for the stress being anisotropic. The gravitational wave owes its existence prrin…
We study the problem of static, spherically symmetric, self-gravitating elastic matter distributions in Newtonian gravity. To this purpose we first introduce a new definition of homogeneous, spherically symmetric (hyper)elastic body in Euler coordinates, i.e., in terms of matter fields defined on the current physical state of the body. We show that our definition is equivalent to the classical one existing in the literature and which is given in Lagrangian coordinates, i.e., in terms of the deformation of the body from a given reference state. After a number of well-known examples of constitut…
We analytically explore the effect of falling matter on a spherically symmetric wormhole supported by a spherical shell composed of exotic matter located at its throat. The falling matter is assumed to be also a thin spherical shell concentric with the shell supporting the wormhole, and its self-gravity is completely taken into account. We treat these spherical thin shells by Israel's formalism of metric junction. When the falling spherical shell goes through the wormhole, it necessarily collides with the shell supporting the wormhole. To treat this collision, we assume the interaction between…
The coupled system of the spherically symmetric Einstein--Maxwell differential equations is solved under two different source conditions: non-zero electric charge and pressure anisotropy. Expressions for the metric functions, and pressures which extend the Tolman VII exact solution are deduced from the new solutions. By applying boundary conditions to these solutions, all integration constants are computed in terms of parameters that are physically meaningful.
The aim of this paper is to explore the complexity factor (CF) for those self-gravitating relativistic spheres whose evolution proceeds non-dynamically. We are adopting the definition of CF mentioned in \cite{PhysRevD.97.044010}, modifying it to the static spherically symmetric case, within the framework of a modified gravity theory (the Palatini $f(R)$ theory). In this respect, we have considered radial dependent anisotropic matter content coupled with spherical geometry and determined the complexity factor involved in the patterns of radial evolution. We shall explore the field and a well-kn…
Gravitational field of a cylindrical Nambu-Goto wall in the vacuum spacetime is considered in order to clarify the interaction between Nambu-Goto membranes and gravitational waves. If one neglects the emission of gravitational waves by the wall motion, the spacetime becomes singular. It is also shown that the emission of gravitational waves does occur by the motion of the cylindrical wall if the initial data is singularity free. The energy loss rate due to radiation of gravitational waves agrees with that estimated from the test wall motion and the quadrupole formula for the gravitational wave…
We consider a static spherically symmetric thin shell wormhole collides with another thin shell consisting of ordinary matter. By employing the geometrical constraint, which leads to the conservation of energy and momentum, we show that the state after the collision can be solved from the initial data. In the low speed approximation, the solutions are rather simple. The shell may either bounce back or pass through the wormhole. In either case, the wormhole shrinks right after the collision. In the "bouncing" case, a surprising result is that the radial speeds before and after the collision sat…
We consider a self-gravitating collisionless gas as described by the Vlasov-Poisson or Einstein-Vlasov system or a self-gravitating fluid ball as described by the Euler-Poisson or Einstein-Euler system. We give a simple proof for the finite extension of spherically symmetric equilibria, which covers all these models simultaneously. In the Vlasov case the equilibria are characterized by a local growth condition on the microscopic equation of state, i.e., on the dependence of the particle distribution on the particle energy, at the cut-off energy E_0, and in the Euler case by the corresponding g…
We formulate the nonlinear isovector model in a curved background, and calculate the spherically symmetric solutions for weak and strong coupling regimes. The usual belief that gravity does not have appreciable effects on the structure of solitons will be examined, in the framework of the calculated solutions, by comparing the flat-space and curved-space solutions. It turns out that in the strong coupling regime, gravity has essential effects on the solutions. Masses of the self-gravitating solitons are calculated numerically using the Tolman expression, and its behavior as a function of the c…
The recently proposed definition of complexity for static and spherically symmetric self--gravitating systems [1], is extended to the fully dynamic situation. In this latter case we have to consider not only the complexity factor of the structure of the fluid distribution, but also the condition of minimal complexity of the pattern of evolution. As we shall see these two issues are deeply intertwined. For the complexity factor of the structure we choose the same as for the static case, whereas for the simplest pattern of evolution we assume the homologous condition. The dissipative and non-dis…
We put forward a new definition of complexity, for static and spherically symmetric self--gravitating systems, based on a quantity, hereafter referred to as complexity factor, that appears in the orthogonal splitting of the Riemann tensor, in the context of general relativity. We start by assuming that the homogeneous (in the energy density) fluid, with isotropic pressure is endowed with minimal complexity. For this kind of fluid distribution, the value of complexity factor is zero. So, the rationale behind our proposal for the definition of complexity factor stems from the fact that it measur…
Recent perturbative studies have shown the existence of long-lived, quasi-stationary configurations of scalar fields around black holes. In particular, such configurations have been found to survive for cosmological timescales, which is a requirement for viable dark matter halo models in galaxies based on such type of structures. In this paper we perform a series of numerical relativity simulations of dynamical non-rotating black holes surrounded by self-gravitating scalar fields. We solve numerically the coupled system of equations formed by the Einstein and the Klein-Gordon equations under t…
Dynamics of a null thin shell immersed in a generic spherically symmetric spacetime is obtained within the distributional formalism. It has been shown that the distributional formalism leads to the same result as in the conventional formalism.
