We prove existence and uniqueness of the motion by curvatureof networks in $\mathbb{R}^n$ when the initial datum is of class $W^{2-\frac{2}{p}}_p$, with triple junction where the unit tangent vectors to the concurring curves form angles of $120$ degrees. Moreover we investigated the regularization effect due to the parabolic nature of the system. An application of this wellposedness result is a new proof of Theorem 3.18 in "Motion by Curvature of Planar Networks" by Mantegazza-Novaga-Tortorelli where the possible behaviors of the solutions at the maximal time of existence are described. Our study is motivated by an open question proposed in "Evolution of Networks with Multiple Junctions " by Mantegazza-Novaga-Pluda-Schulze: does there exist a unique solution of the motion by curvature of networks with initial datum a regular network of class $C^2$? We give a positive answer.
In this paper, we give a height estimate for constant mean curvature graphs. Using this result we prove two results of uniqueness for the Dirichlet problem associated to the constant mean curvature equation on unbounded domains.
In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of asymptotically conical tangent flows in all codimensions. This is based on an early work of Chodosh-Schulze, who proved the uniqueness in the hypersurface case.
Mean curvature flow evolves isometrically immersed base manifolds $M$ in the direction of their mean curvatures in an ambient manifold $\bar{M}$. If the base manifold $M$ is compact, the short time existence and uniqueness of the mean curvature flow are well-known. For complete isometrically immersed submanifolds of arbitrary codimensions, the existence and uniqueness are still unsettled even in the Euclidean space. In this paper, we solve the uniqueness problem affirmatively for the mean curvature flow of general codimensions and general ambient manifolds. In the second part of the paper, ins…
We show existence of ancient solutions to the rescaled mean curvature flow starting from a given asymptotically conical self-expander. These are examples of mean curvature flows coming out of cones that are not self-similar. We also show a strong uniqueness theorem when the cone is generic and use it to classify mean curvature flows coming out of generic cones of small entropy in low dimensions.
We show short time existence and uniqueness of $\C^{1,1}$ solutions to the mean curvature flow with obstacles, when the obstacles are of class $\C^{1,1}$. If the initial interface is a periodic graph we show long time existence of the evolution and convergence to a minimal constrained hypersurface.
Let $(M,g)$ be a complete noncompact non-collapsing $n$-dimensional riemannian manifold, whose complex sectional curvature is bounded from below and scalar curvature is bounded from above. Then ricci flow with above as its initial data, has at most one solution in the class of complete riemannian metric with complex sectional curvature bounded from below.
In this note we prove uniqueness of nondegenerate compact blowups for the motion by curvature of planar networks. The proof follows ideas introduced in "Lojasiewicz-Simon inequalities for minimal networks: stability and convergence" for the study of stability properties of critical points of the length functional and it is based on the application of a Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality.
In this note we prove the backwards uniqueness of the mean curvature flow for (codimension one) hypersurfaces in a Euclidean space. More precisely, let $F_t, \widetilde{F}_t:M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ be two complete solutions of the mean curvature flow on $M^n \times [0,T]$ with bounded second fundamental forms. Suppose $F_T=\widetilde{F}_T$, then $F_t=\widetilde{F}_t$ on $M^n \times [0,T]$. This is an analog of a result of Kotschwar on the Ricci flow.
A well-known question of Perelman concerns the classification of noncompact ancient solutions to the Ricci flow in dimension $3$ which have positive sectional curvature and are $κ$-noncollapsed. In this paper, we solve the analogous problem for mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and prove that the rotationally symmetric bowl soliton is the only noncompact ancient solution of mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which is strictly convex and noncollapsed.
In this note, we derive a stability and weak-strong uniqueness principle for volume-preserving mean curvature flow. The proof is based on a new notion of volume-preserving gradient flow calibrations, which is a natural extension of the concept in the case without volume preservation recently introduced by Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478]. The first main result shows that any strong solution with certain regularity is calibrated. The second main result consists of a stability estimate in terms of a relative entropy, which is valid in the class of distributional solutions to volume-preserving m…
Let $ψ$ be a given function defined on a Riemannian space. Under what conditions does there exist a compact starshaped hypersurface $M$ for which $ψ$, when evaluated on $M$, coincides with the $m-$th elementary symmetric function of principal curvatures of $M$ for a given $m$? The corresponding existence and uniqueness problems in Euclidean space have been investigated by several authors in the mid 1980's. Recently, conditions for existence were established in elliptic space and, most recently, for hyperbolic space. However, the uniqueness problem has remained open. In this paper we investigat…
In a previous paper, the authors showed that metrics which are asymptotic to Anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild metrics with positive mass admit a unique foliation by stable spheres with constant mean curvature. In this paper we extend that result to all asymptotically hyperbolic metrics for which the trace of the mass term is positive. We do this by combining the Kazdan-Warner obstructions with a theorem due to De Lellis and Müller.
By adapting the test functions introduced by Choi-Daskaspoulos \cite{c-d} and Brendle-Choi-Daskaspoulos \cite{b-c-d} and exploring properties of the $k$-th elementary symmetric functions $σ_{k}$ intensively, we show that for any fixed $k$ with $1\leq k\leq n-1$, any strictly convex closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying $σ_{k}^α=\langle X,ν\rangle$, with $α\geq \frac{1}{k}$, must be a round sphere. In fact, we prove a uniqueness result for any strictly convex closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying $F+C=\langle X,ν\rangle$, where $F$ is a positive homogeneous smooth …
We address the classification of ancient solutions to the Gauss curvature flow under the assumption that the solutions are contained in a cylinder of bounded cross section. For each cylinder of convex bounded cross-section, we show that there are only two ancient solutions which are asymptotic to this cylinder: the non-compact translating soliton and the compact oval solution obtained by gluing two translating solitons approaching each other from time $-\infty$ from two opposite ends.
We study the $C^4$ smooth convex bodies $\mathbb{K}\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying $K(x)=u(x)^{1-p}$, where $x\in\mathbb{S}^n$, $K$ is the Gauss curvature of $\partial\mathbb{K}$, $u$ is the support function of $\mathbb{K}$, and $p$ is a constant. In the case of $n=2$, either when $p\in[-1,0]$ or when $p\in(0,1)$ in addition to a pinching condition, we show that $\mathbb{K}$ must be the unit ball. This partially answers a conjecture of Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang about the uniqueness of the $L_p$-Minkowski problem in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Moreover, we give an explicit pinching constant depending onl…
We propose a new weak solution concept for (two-phase) mean curvature flow which enjoys both (unconditional) existence and (weak-strong) uniqueness properties. These solutions are evolving varifolds, just as in Brakke's formulation, but are coupled to the phase volumes by a simple transport equation. First, we show that, in the exact same setup as in Ilmanen's proof [J. Differential Geom. 38, 417-461, (1993)], any limit point of solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation is a varifold solution in our sense. Second, we prove that any calibrated flow in the sense of Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478] -…
Motivated by the quasi-local mass problem in general relativity, we study the rigidity of isometric immersions with the same mean curvature into a warped product space. As a corollary of our main result, two star-shaped hypersurfaces in a spatial Schwarzschild or AdS-Schwarzschild manifold with nonzero mass differ only by a rotation if they are isometric and have the same mean curvature. We also give similar results if the mean curvature condition is replaced by an $σ_2$-curvature condition.

We show, for mean curvature flows in Euclidean space, that if one of the tangent flows at a given space-time point consists of a closed, multiplicity-one, smoothly embedded self-similar shrinker, then it is the unique tangent flow at that point. That is the limit of the parabolic rescalings does not depend on the chosen sequence of rescalings. Furthermore, given such a closed, multiplicity-one, smoothly embedded self-similarly shrinker $Σ$, we show that any solution of the rescaled flow, which is sufficiently close to $Σ$, with Gaussian density ratios greater or equal to that of $Σ$, stays for…
An existence and uniqueness result, up to fattening, for a class of crystalline mean curvature flows with natural mobility is proved. The results are valid in any dimension and for arbitrary, possibly unbounded, initial closed sets. The comparison principle is obtained by means of a suitable weak formulation of the flow, while the existence of a global-in-time solution follows via a minimizing movements approach.
Given a smooth, symmetric, homogeneous of degree one function $f=f\left(λ_{1},\cdots,\,λ_{n}\right)$ satisfying $\partial_{i}f>0$ for all $i=1,\cdots,\, n$, and an oriented, properly embedded smooth cone $\mathcal{C}^n$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, we show that under some suitable conditions on $f$ and the covariant derivatives of the second fundamental form of $\mathcal{C}$, there is at most one $f$ self-shrinker (i.e. an oriented hypersurface $Σ^n$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for which $f\left(κ_{1},\cdots,\,κ_{n}\right)+\frac{1}{2}X\cdot N=0$ holds, where $X$ is the position vector, $N$ is the unit nor…
We obtain a sharp characterization of the Euclidean ball among all convex bodies K whose boundary has a pointwise k-th mean curvature not smaller than a geometric constant at almost all normal points. This geometric constant depends only on the volume and the boundary area of K. We deduce this characterization from a new isoperimetric-type inequality for arbitrary convex bodies, for which the equality is achieved uniquely by balls. This second result is proved in a more general context of generalized mean-convex sets. Finally we positively answer a question left open in [FLW19] proving a furth…
Singularities of the mean curvature flow of an embedded surface in R^3 are expected to be modelled on self-shrinkers that are compact, cylindrical, or asymptotically conical. In order to understand the flow before and after the singular time, it is crucial to know the uniqueness of tangent flows at the singularity. In all dimensions, assuming the singularity is multiplicity one, uniqueness in the compact case has been established by the second-named author, and in the cylindrical case by Colding-Minicozzi. We show here the uniqueness of multiplicity-one asymptotically conical tangent flows for…
Once one knows that singularities occur, one naturally wonders what the singularities are like. For minimal varieties the first answer, already known to Federer-Fleming in 1959, is that they weakly resemble cones. For mean curvature flow, by the combined work of Huisken, Ilmanen, and White, singularities weakly resemble shrinkers. Unfortunately, the simple proofs leave open the possibility that a minimal variety or a mean curvature flow looked at under a microscope will resemble one blowup, but under higher magnification, it might (as far as anyone knows) resemble a completely different blowup…
We study weak solutions to mean curvature flow satisfying Young's angle condition for general contact angles $α\in (0,π)$. First, we construct BV solutions using the Allen-Cahn approximation with boundary contact energy as proposed by Owen and Sternberg. Second, we prove the weak-strong uniqueness and stability for this solution concept. The main ingredient for both results is a relative energy, which can also be interpreted as a tilt excess.
The purpose of this paper is to derive anisotropic mean curvature flow as the limit of the anisotropic Allen-Cahn equation. We rely on distributional solution concepts for both the diffuse and sharp interface models, and prove convergence using relative entropy methods, which have recently proven to be a powerful tool in interface evolution problems. With the same relative entropy, we prove a weak-strong uniqueness result, which relies on the construction of gradient flow calibrations for our anisotropic energy functionals.
We prove the uniqueness of solutions of the Ricci flow on complete noncompact manifolds with bounded curvatures using the De Turck approach. As a consequence we obtain a correct proof of the existence of solution of the Ricci harmonic flow on complete noncompact manifolds with bounded curvatures.
We derive a weak-strong uniqueness principle for BV solutions to multiphase mean curvature flow of triple line clusters in three dimensions. Our proof is based on the explicit construction of a gradient-flow calibration in the sense of the recent work of Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478v2] for any such cluster. This extends the two-dimensional construction to the three-dimensional case of surfaces meeting along triple junctions.
Here we provide a uniqueness result for viscosity solutions to sub-Riemannian mean curvature flow. In this setting the uniqueness cannot be deduced via comparison principle, which is known only for graphs and for radially symmetric surfaces, due to the presence of characteristic points. Here we prove that any viscosity solution is limit of a sequence of solutions of Riemannian flow, and obtain as a consequence uniqueness and comparison principle already known in the approximating riemannian setting. The results are provided in the settings of both 3-dimensional rototranslation group SE(2) and …
We prove that in the absence of topological changes, the notion of BV solutions to planar multiphase mean curvature flow does not allow for a mechanism for (unphysical) non-uniqueness. Our approach is based on the local structure of the energy landscape near a classical evolution by mean curvature. Mean curvature flow being the gradient flow of the surface energy functional, we develop a gradient-flow analogue of the notion of calibrations. Just like the existence of a calibration guarantees that one has reached a global minimum in the energy landscape, the existence of a "gradient flow calibr…
In 1996, Huisen-Yau proved that every three-dimensional, asymptotically Schwarzschilden manifold with positive mass is uniquely foliated by stable spheres of constant mean curvature and they defined the center of mass using this CMC-foliation. Rigger and Neves-Tian showed in 2004 and 2009/10 analogous existence and uniqueness theorems for three-dimensional, asymptotically Anti-de Sitter and asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with positive mass aspect function, respectively. Last year, Cederbaum-Cortier-Sakovich proved that the CMC-foliation characterizes the center of mass in the hyperbolic s…
In this paper, we investigate the critical points of solutions to the prescribed constant mean curvature equation with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions respectively in a bounded smooth convex domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n}(n\geq2)$. Firstly, we show the non-degeneracy and uniqueness of the critical points of solutions in a planar domain by using the local Chen & Huang's comparison technique and the geometric properties of approximate surfaces at the non-degenerate critical points. Secondly, we deduce the uniqueness and non-degeneracy of the critical points of solutions in a rotationally sy…
This is a continuation of the previous articles on Kahler cone metrics. In this article, we introduce weighted function spaces and provide a self-contained treatment on cone angles in the whole interval $(0,1]$. We first construct geodesics in the space of Kahler cone metrics (cone geodesics). We next determine the very detailed asymptotic behaviour of constant scalar curvature Kahler (cscK) cone metrics, which leads to the reductivity of the automorphism group. Then we establish the linear theory for the Lichnerowicz operator, which immediately implies the openness of the path deforming the c…
The purpose of this paper is to show that in a finite dimensional metric space with Alexandrov's curvature bounded below, Monge's transport problem for the quadratic cost admits a unique solution.
In this paper we prove classification results to elliptic fully nonlinear conformal equations on certain subdomains of the sphere with prescribed constant mean curvature on its boundary. Such subdomains are the hemisphere (or a geodesic ball on $\mathbb{S}^n$) of dimension $n\geq 2$ with prescribed constant mean curvature on its boundary, and annular domains with minimal boundary. Our results extend the classifications of Escobar in \cite{E0} when $n\geq 3$, and Hang-Wang in \cite{HaWa} and Jimenez in \cite{J} when $n=2$.
We consider the problem of finding on a given Euclidean domain $Ω$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ a complete conformally flat metric whose Schouten curvature $A$ satisfies some equation of the form $f(λ(-A)) = 1$. This generalizes a problem considered by Loewner and Nirenberg for the scalar curvature. We prove the existence and uniqueness of such metric when the boundary $\partialΩ$ is a smooth bounded hypersurface (of codimension one). When $\partialΩ$ contains a compact smooth submanifold $Σ$ of higher codimension with $\partialΩ\setminusΣ$ being compact, we also give a `sharp' condition for the di…
In this work we prove the existence and uniqueness of Killing graphs with prescribed mean curvature considering functions which are not necessarily constant along the flow lines of the Killing vector field.
We revisit some uniqueness results for a geometric nonlinear PDE related to the scalar curvature in Riemannian geometry and CR geometry. In the Riemannian case we give a new proof of the uniqueness result assuming only a positive lower bound for Ricci curvature. We apply the same principle in the CR case and reconstruct the Jerison-Lee identity in a more general setting. As a consequence we prove a stronger uniqueness result in the CR case. We also discuss some open problems for further study.
For a fixed regular cone in Euclidean space with small entropy we show that all smooth self-expanding solutions of the mean curvature flow that are asymptotic to the cone are in the same isotopy class.
This thesis is devoted to the study of well-posedness properties of some geometric variational problems: existence, regularity and uniqueness of solutions. We study two specific problems arising in the context of geometric calculus of variations and sharing strong analogies: the Plateau's problem and the optimal branched transport problem. The first part of the thesis discusses the existence theory. Both problems are formulated in the language of Federer and Fleming's theory of currents. After an exposition of the main results, we will present the core ideas of the (interior) regularity theory…
Here we provide uniqueness of vanishing viscosity solutions to sub-Riemannian mean curvature flow problem, which was known only far from characteristic points or under special symmetry condition. We employ vanishing viscosity approach and look for solutions as limit of solutions to approximating flow, which is well defined also at characteristic points, and estimate the rate of convergence of the approximating solutions. The results are provided in the settings of both 3-dimensional rototranslation group $\text{SE}(2)$ and Heisenberg group $\text{H}^1$ and they are particularly important due t…
In this paper we study global Poincare inequalities on balls in a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds satisfying the generalized curvature dimension inequality introduced by F.Baudoin and N.Garofalo. As a corollary, we prove the uniqueness of solutions for the subelliptic heat equation. Our results apply in particular to CR Sasakian manifolds with Tanaka-Webster-Ricci curvature bounded from below and Carnot groups of step two.
In this paper we show the uniqueness of the critical point for \emph{semi-stable} solutions of the problem $$\begin{cases} -Δu=f(u)&\text{in }Ω\\ u>0&\text{in }Ω\\ u=0&\text{on } \partialΩ,\end{cases}$$ where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth bounded domain whose boundary has \emph{nonnegative} curvature and $f(0)\ge0$. It extends a result by Cabré-Chanillo to the case where the curvature of $\partialΩ$ vanishes.
We prove uniqueness of solutions for the nonlocal Liouville equation $$ (-Δ)^{1/2} w = K e^w \quad \mbox{in $\mathbb{R}$} $$ with finite total $Q$-curvature $\int_{\mathbb{R}} K e^w \, dx< +\infty$. Here the prescribed $Q$-curvature function $K=K(|x|) > 0$ is assumed to be a positive, symmetric-decreasing function satisfying suitable regularity and decay bounds. In particular, we obtain uniqueness of solutions in the Gaussian case with $K(x) = \exp(-x^2)$. Our uniqueness proof exploits a connection of the nonlocal Liouville equation to ground state solitons for Calogero--Moser derivative NLS, …
We obtain the existence, regularity, uniqueness of the non-stationary problems of a class of non-Newtonian fluid is a power law fluid with $p>9/5$ in the half-space under slip boundary conditions.
