Suppose Vν is the pseudo-variance function of the Cauchy-Stieltjes Kernel (CSK) family K+(ν) generated by a non degenerate probability measure ν with support bounded from above. We determine the formula for pseudo-variance function (or variance function Vν in case of existence) under boolean additive convolution power. This formulas is used to identify the relation between variance functions under Boolean Bercovici-Bata Bijection between probability measures. We also gives the connection between boolean cumulants and variance function and we relate boolean cumulants of some probability measures to Catalan numbers and Fuss Catalan numbers.
We introduce new homomorphisms relative to additive convolutions and max-convolutions in free, boolean and classical cases. Crucial roles are played by the limit distributions for free multiplicative law of large numbers.
We obtain a sharp estimate of the speed of convergence in the Boolean central limit theorem for measures of finite sixth moment. The main tool is a quantitative version of the Stieltjes-Perron inversion formula.
We give estimates on the rate of convergence in the Boolean central limit theorem for the Lévy distance. In the case of measures with bounded support we obtain a sharp estimate by giving a qualitative description of this convergence.
The additive monotone (resp. boolean) unitary Brownian motion is a non-commutative stochastic process with monotone (resp. boolean) independent and stationary increments which are distributed according to the arcsine law (resp. Bernoulli law) . We introduce the monotone and booleen unitary Brownian motions and we derive a closed formula for their associated moments. This provides a description of their spectral measures. We prove that, in the monotone case, the multiplicative analog of the arcsine distribution is absolutely continuous with respect to the Haar measure on the unit circle, wherea…
We study the distributional behavior for products, and for sums of boolean independent random variables in an infinitesimal triangular array. We show that the limit laws of boolean convolutions are determined by the limit laws of free convolutions, and vice versa. We further use these results to show several connections between the limiting distributional behavior of classical convolutions and that of boolean convolutions. The proof of our results is based on the analytical apparatus developed for free convolutions.
In this article we study the influence of regularly varying probability measures on additive and multiplicative Boolean convolutions. We introduce the notion of Boolean subexponentiality (for additive Boolean convolution), which extends the notion of classical and free subexponentiality. We show that the distributions with regularly varying tails belong to the class of Boolean subexponential distributions. As an application we also study the behaviour of the Belinschi-Nica map. Breiman's theorem study the classical product convolution between regularly varying measures. We derive an analogous …
We introduce the boolean convolution for probability measures on the unit circle. Roughly speaking, it describes the distribution of the product of two boolean independent unitary random variables. We find an analogue of the characteristic function and determine all infinitely divisible probability measures on the unit circle for the boolean convolution.
We consider convolution-type stochastic Volterra equations with additive Hilbert-valued fractional Brownian motion, $0<H<1$. We find the weak solution to this stochastic Volterra equation, and study its stochastic integral part, the stochastic convolution, which we show to be mean-zero Gaussian. We develop an Itô isometry for stochastic integrals with respect to a Hilbert-valued fractional Brownian motion, and use it to compute the covariance of the stochastic convolution. This formula, which uses fractional integrals and derivatives, generalizes the well-known formula from the case $H=1/2$.
Belinschi and Nica introduced a composition semigroup on the set of probability measures. Using this semigroup, they introduced a free divisibility indicator, from which one can know whether a probability measure is freely infinitely divisible or not. In this paper we further investigate this indicator, introduce a multiplicative version of it and are able to show many properties. Specifically, on the first half of the paper, we calculate how the indicator changes with respect to free and Boolean powers; we prove that free and Boolean 1/2-stable laws have free divisibility indicators equal to …
In this paper, the notion of bi-Boolean independence for non-unital pairs of algebras is introduced thereby extending the notion of Boolean independence to pairs of algebras. The notion of B-$(\ell, r)$-cumulants is defined via a bi-Boolean moment-cumulant formula over the lattice of bi-interval partitions, and it is demonstrated that bi-Boolean independence is equivalent to the vanishing of mixed B-$(\ell, r)$-cumulants. Furthermore, some of the simplest bi-Boolean convolutions are considered, and a bi-Boolean partial $η$-transform is constructed for the study of limit theorems and infinite d…
This paper introduces the class of selfdecomposable distributions concerning Boolean convolution. A general regularity property of Boolean selfdecomposable distributions is established; in particular the number of atoms is at most two and the singular continuous part is zero. We then analyze how shifting probability measures changes Boolean selfdecomposability. Several examples are presented to supplement the above results. Finally, we prove that the standard normal distribution $N(0,1)$ is Boolean selfdecomposable but the shifted one $N(m,1)$ is not for sufficiently large $|m|$.
We study Boolean stable laws, $\mathbf{b}_{α,ρ}$, with stability index $α$ and asymmetry parameter $ρ$. We show that the classical scale mixture of $\mathbf{b}_{α,ρ}$ coincides with a free mixture and also a monotone mixture of $\mathbf{b}_{α,ρ}$. For this purpose we define the multiplicative monotone convolution of probability measures, one is supported on the positive real line and the other is arbitrary. We prove that any scale mixture of $\mathbf{b}_{α,ρ}$ is both classically and freely infinitely divisible for $α\leq1/2$ and also for some $α>1/2$. Furthermore, we show the multiplicative i…
Let $\boxplus$, $\boxtimes$ and $\uplus$ be the free additive, free multiplicative, and boolean additive convolutions, respectively. For a probability measure $μ$ on $[0,\infty)$ with finite second moment, we find the scaling limit of $(μ^{\boxtimes N})^{\boxplus N}$ as $N$ goes to infinity. The $\mathcal{R}$--transform of the limit distribution can be represented by the Lambert's $W$ function. We also find similar limit theorem by replacing the free additive convolution with the boolean convolution.
We provide an unifying polynomial expression giving moments in terms of cumulants, and viceversa, holding in the classical, boolean and free setting. This is done by using a symbolic treatment of Abel polynomials. As a by-product, we show that in the free cumulant theory the volume polynomial of Pitman and Stanley plays the role of the complete Bell exponential polynomial in the classical theory. Moreover via generalized Abel polynomials we construct a new class of cumulants, including the classical, boolean and free ones, and the convolutions linearized by them. Finally, via an umbral Fourier…
Valuations, as additive functionals, allow various applications in Stochastic Geometry, yielding mean value formulas for specific random closed sets and processes of convex or polyconvex particles. In particular, valuations are especially adapted to Boolean models, the latter being the union sets of Poisson particle processes. In this chapter, we collect mean value formulas for scalar- and tensor-valued valuations applied to Boolean models under quite general invariance assumptions.
In this paper, we determine the effect of the free multiplicative convolution on the pseudo-variance function of a Cauchy-Stieltjes kernel family. We then use the machinery of variance functions to establish some limit theorems related to this type of convolution and involving the free additive convolution and the boolean additive convolution.
We study the max-convolution and max-stable laws for Boolean independence and prove that these are Dagum distributions (also known as log-logistical distributions).
We study the multiplicative convolution for c-monotone independence. This convolution unifies the monotone, Boolean and orthogonal multiplicative convolutions. We characterize convolution semigroups for the c-monotone multiplicative convolution on the unit circle. We also prove that an infinitely divisible distribution can always be embedded in a convolution semigroup. We furthermore discuss the (non)-uniqueness of such embeddings including the monotone case. Finally connections to the multiplicative Boolean convolution are discussed.
We study $N$-ary non-commutative notions of independence, which are given by trees and which generalize free, Boolean, and monotone independence. For every rooted subtree $\mathcal{T}$ of the $N$-regular tree, we define the $\mathcal{T}$-free product of $N$ non-commutative probability spaces and we define the $\mathcal{T}$-free additive convolution of $N$ non-commutative laws. These $N$-ary convolution operations form a topological symmetric operad which includes the free, Boolean, monotone, and anti-monotone convolutions, as well as the orthogonal and subordination convolutions. Using the ope…
In this paper we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the weak convergence of c-free convolution of pairs of measures, where the measures are assumed to be infinitesimal and their support may be unbounded. These results are obtained by complex analytic methods.
The Nevanlinna transform K(z), of a measure and a real constant, plays an important role in the complex analysis and more recently in the free probability theory (boolean convolution). It is shown that its restriction k(it) (the restricted Nevanlinna transform) to the imaginary axis can be expressed as the Laplace transform of the Fourier transform (characteristic function) of the corresponding measure. Finally, a relation between the Voiculescu and the boolean convolution is indicated.
n this paper, we prove a result linking the square and the rectangular R-transforms, the consequence of which is a surprising relation between the square and rectangular versions the free additive convolutions, involving the Marchenko-Pastur law. Consequences on random matrices, on infinite divisibility and on the arithmetics of the square versions of the free additive and multiplicative convolutions are given.
We introduce and study a new type of convolution of probability measures called the orthogonal convolution, which is related to the monotone convolution. Using this convolution, we derive alternating decompositions of the free additive convolution of compactly supported probability measures in free probability. These decompositions are directly related to alternating decompositions of the associated subordination functions. In particular, they allow us to compute free additive convolutions of compactly supported measures without using free cumulants or R-transforms. In simple cases, representa…
We define a product of algebraic probability spaces equipped with two states. This product is called a conditionally monotone product. This product is a new example of independence in non-commutative probability theory and unifies the monotone and Boolean products, and moreover, the orthogonal product. Then we define the associated cumulants and calculate the limit distributions in central limit theorem and Poisson's law of small numbers. We also prove a combinatorial moment-cumulant formula using monotone partitions. We investigate some other topics such as infinite divisibility for the addit…
We prove that the free additive convolution of two Borel probability measures supported on the real line can have a component that is singular continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure on the real line only if one of the two measures is a point mass. The density of the absolutely continuous part with respect to the Lebesgue measure is shown to be analytic wherever positive and finite. The atoms of the free additive convolution of Borel probability measures on the real line have been described by Bercovici and Voiculescu in a previous paper.
We realize the Belinschi-Nica semigroup of homomorphisms as a free multiplicative subordination. This realization allows to define more general semigroups of homomorphisms with respect to free multiplicative convolution. For these semigroups we show that a differential equation holds, generalizing the complex Burgers equation. We give examples of free multiplicative subordination and find a relation to the Markov-Krein transform, Boolean stable laws and monotone stable laws. A similar idea works for additive subordination, and in particular we study the free additive subordination associated t…
We consider the framework of an operator-valued noncommutative probability space over a unital C*-algebra B. We show how for a B-valued distribution μone can define convolution powers with respect to free additive convolution and with respect to Boolean convolution, where the exponent considered in the power is a suitably chosen linear map ηfrom B to B, instead of being a non-negative real number. More precisely, the Boolean convolution power is defined whenever ηis completely positive, while the free additive convolution power is defined whenever η- 1 is completely positive (where 1 stands fo…
The free convolution is the binary operation on the set of probability measures on the real line which allows to deduce, from the individual spectral distributions, the spectral distribution of a sum of independent unitarily invariant square random matrices or of a sum of free operators in a non commutative probability space. In the same way, the rectangular free convolution allows to deduce, from the individual singular distributions, the singular distribution of a sum of independent unitarily invariant rectangular random matrices. In this paper, we consider the regularization properties of t…
In this paper we study some analytic properties of bi-free additive convolution, both scalar and operator-valued. We show that using properties of Voiculescu's subordination functions associated to free additive convolution of operator-valued distributions, simpler formulas for bi-free convolutions can be derived. We use these formulas in order to prove a result about atoms of bi-free additive convolutions.
Bercovici and Pata showed that the correspondence between classically, freely, and Boolean infinitely divisible distributions holds on the level of limit theorems. We extend this correspondence also to distributions infinitely divisible with respect to the additive monotone convolution. Because of non-commutativity of this convolution, we use a new technique based on the Chernoff product formula. In fact, the correspondence between the Boolean and monotone limit theorems extends from probability measures to positive measures of total weight at most one. Finally, we study this correspondence fo…
We introduce a class of independence relations, which include free, Boolean and monotone independence, in operator valued probability. We show that this class of independence relations have a matricial extension property so that we can easily study their associated convolutions via Voiculescu's fully matricial function theory. Based the matricial extension property, we show that many results can be generalized to multi-variable cases. Besides free, Boolean and monotone independence convolutions, we will focus on two important convolutions, which are orthogonal and subordination additive convol…
We use the theory of fully matricial, or non-commutative, functions to investigate infinite divisibility and limit theorems in operator-valued non-commutative probability. Our main result is an operator-valued analogue of the Bercovici-Pata bijection. An important tool is Voiculescu's subordination property for operator-valued free convolution.
We introduce the antipodal pairs property for probability measures on finite Boolean algebras and prove that conditional versions imply strong forms of log-concavity. We give several applications of this fact, including improvements of some results of Wagner; a new proof of a theorem of Liggett stating that ultra-log-concavity of sequences is preserved by convolutions; and some progress on a well-known log-concavity conjecture of J. Mason.
In a 1999 paper, Bercovici and Pata showed that a natural bijection between the classically, free and Boolean infinitely divisible measures held at the level of limit theorems of triangular arrays. This result was extended to include monotone convolution by the authors. In recent years, operator-valued versions of free, Boolean and monotone probability have also been developed. Belinschi, Popa and Vinnikov showed that the Bercovici-Pata bijection holds for the operator-valued versions of free and Boolean probability. In this article, we extend the bijection to include monotone probability theo…
We prove that the system of subordination equations, defining the free additive convolution of two probability measures, is stable away from the edges of the support and blow-up singularities by showing that the recent smoothness condition of Kargin is always satisfied. As an application, we consider the local spectral statistics of the random matrix ensemble $A+UBU^*$, where $U$ is a Haar distributed random unitary or orthogonal matrix, and $A$ and $B$ are deterministic matrices. In the bulk regime, we prove that the empirical spectral distribution of $A+UBU^*$ concentrates around the free ad…
Let k be a positive integer and let D_k denote the space of joint distributions for k-tuples of selfadjoint elements in C*-probability space. The paper studies the concept of "subordination distribution of μ\boxplus νwith respect to ν" for μ, ν\in D_k, where \boxplus is the operation of free additive convolution on D_k. The main tools used in this study are combinatorial properties of R-transforms for joint distributions and a related operator model, with operators acting on the full Fock space Multi-variable subordination turns out to have nice relations to a process of evolution towards \box…
Suppose that $X\_{1}$ and $X\_{2}$ are two selfadjoint random variables that are freely independent over an operator algebra $\mathcal{B}$. We describe the possible operator atoms of the distribution of $X\_{1}+X\_{2}$ and, using linearization, we determine the possible eigenvalues of an arbitrary polynomial $p(X\_{1},X\_{2})$ in case $\mathcal{B}=\mathbb{C}$.
We consider the free additive convolution of two probability measures $μ$ and $ν$ on the real line and show that $μ\boxplusν$ is supported on a single interval if $μ$ and $ν$ each has single interval support. Moreover, the density of $μ\boxplusν$ is proven to vanish as a square root near the edges of its support if both $μ$ and $ν$ have power law behavior with exponents between $-1$ and $1$ near their edges. In particular, these results show the ubiquity of the conditions in our recent work on optimal local law at the spectral edges for addition of random matrices [4].
Recently subclasses of polynomial ensembles for additive and multiplicative matrix convolutions were identified which were called Pólya ensembles (or polynomial ensembles of derivative type). Those ensembles are closed under the respective convolutions and, thus, build a semi-group when adding by hand a unit element. They even have a semi-group action on the polynomial ensembles. Moreover in several works transformations of the bi-orthogonal functions and kernels of a given polynomial ensemble were derived when performing an additive or multiplicative matrix convolution with particular Pólya e…
We consider the free additive convolution $μ_α\boxplusμ_β$ of two probability measures $μ_α$ and $μ_β$, supported on respectively $n_α$ and $n_β$ disjoint bounded intervals on the real line, and derive a lower bound and an upper bound that is strictly smaller than $2n_αn_β$, on the number of connected components in its support. We also obtain the corresponding results for the free additive convolution semi-group $\{μ^{\boxplus t}\,:\, t\ge 1\}$. Throughout the paper, we consider classes of probability measures with power law behaviors at the endpoints of their supports with exponents ranging f…
In classical probability the law of large numbers for the multiplicative convolution follows directly from the law for the additive convolution. In free probability this is not the case. The free additive law was proved by D. Voiculescu in 1986 for probability measures with bounded support and extended to all probability measures with first moment by J. M. Lindsay and V. Pata in 1997, while the free multiplicative law was proved only recently by G. Tucci in 2010. In this paper we extend Tucci's result to measures with unbounded support while at the same time giving a more elementary proof for …
The superconvergence phenomenon is shown for products of free, identically distributed random variables. We also show that a certain Holder regularity, first demonstrated by Biane for the density of a free additive convolution with a semicircular law, extends to free additive and multiplicative convolutions with arbitrary freely infinitely divisible laws and to free convolution semigroups.
This paper defines the notion of generators for a class of decreasing radial Loewner chains which are only continuous with respect to time. For this purpose, "Loewner's integral equation" which generalizes Loewner's differential equation is defined and analyzed. The definition of generators is motivated by the Lévy-Khintchine representation for additive processes on the unit circle. Actually, we can and do introduce a homeomorphism between the above class of Loewner chains and the set of the distributions of increments of additive processes equipped with suitable topologies. On the other hand,…
Let M denote the space of Borel probability measures on the real line. For every nonnegative t we consider the transformation $\mathbb B_t : M \to M$ defined for any given element in M by taking succesively the the (1+t) power with respect to free additive convolution and then the 1/(1+t) power with respect to Boolean convolution of the given element. We show that the family of maps {\mathbb B_t|t\geq 0} is a semigroup with respect to the operation of composition and that, quite surprisingly, every $\mathbb B_t$ is a homomorphism for the operation of free multiplicative convolution. We prove t…
The regular open subsets of a topological space form a Boolean algebra, where the `join' of two regular open sets is the interior of the closure of their union. A `credence' is a finitely additive probability measure on this Boolean algebra, or on one of its subalgebras. We develop a theory of integration for such credences. We then explain the relationship between credences, residual charges, and Borel probability measures. We show that a credence can be represented by a normal Borel measure, augmented with a `liminal structure', which specifies how two or more regular open sets share the pro…
We give a streamlined proof of the limit theorems for the free additive convolution of infinitesimal triangular arrays of probability measures on the real line. The result was first proved by Chistyakov and Götze using analytic subordination.
