We introduce and study a new type of convolution of probability measures called the orthogonal convolution, which is related to the monotone convolution. Using this convolution, we derive alternating decompositions of the free additive convolution of compactly supported probability measures in free probability. These decompositions are directly related to alternating decompositions of the associated subordination functions. In particular, they allow us to compute free additive convolutions of compactly supported measures without using free cumulants or R-transforms. In simple cases, representations of the corresponding Cauchy transforms as continued fractions are obtained in a natural way. Moreover, this approach establishes a clear connection between convolutions and products associated with the main notions of independence (free, monotone and boolean) in noncommutative probability. Finally, our result leads to natural decompositions of the free product of rooted graphs.
In this paper we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the weak convergence of c-free convolution of pairs of measures, where the measures are assumed to be infinitesimal and their support may be unbounded. These results are obtained by complex analytic methods.
We define a product of algebraic probability spaces equipped with two states. This product is called a conditionally monotone product. This product is a new example of independence in non-commutative probability theory and unifies the monotone and Boolean products, and moreover, the orthogonal product. Then we define the associated cumulants and calculate the limit distributions in central limit theorem and Poisson's law of small numbers. We also prove a combinatorial moment-cumulant formula using monotone partitions. We investigate some other topics such as infinite divisibility for the addit…
We prove that the free additive convolution of two Borel probability measures supported on the real line can have a component that is singular continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure on the real line only if one of the two measures is a point mass. The density of the absolutely continuous part with respect to the Lebesgue measure is shown to be analytic wherever positive and finite. The atoms of the free additive convolution of Borel probability measures on the real line have been described by Bercovici and Voiculescu in a previous paper.
In this paper we study some analytic properties of bi-free additive convolution, both scalar and operator-valued. We show that using properties of Voiculescu's subordination functions associated to free additive convolution of operator-valued distributions, simpler formulas for bi-free convolutions can be derived. We use these formulas in order to prove a result about atoms of bi-free additive convolutions.
Let $\boxplus$, $\boxtimes$ and $\uplus$ be the free additive, free multiplicative, and boolean additive convolutions, respectively. For a probability measure $μ$ on $[0,\infty)$ with finite second moment, we find the scaling limit of $(μ^{\boxtimes N})^{\boxplus N}$ as $N$ goes to infinity. The $\mathcal{R}$--transform of the limit distribution can be represented by the Lambert's $W$ function. We also find similar limit theorem by replacing the free additive convolution with the boolean convolution.
Let k be a positive integer and let D_k denote the space of joint distributions for k-tuples of selfadjoint elements in C*-probability space. The paper studies the concept of "subordination distribution of μ\boxplus νwith respect to ν" for μ, ν\in D_k, where \boxplus is the operation of free additive convolution on D_k. The main tools used in this study are combinatorial properties of R-transforms for joint distributions and a related operator model, with operators acting on the full Fock space Multi-variable subordination turns out to have nice relations to a process of evolution towards \box…
Suppose that $X\_{1}$ and $X\_{2}$ are two selfadjoint random variables that are freely independent over an operator algebra $\mathcal{B}$. We describe the possible operator atoms of the distribution of $X\_{1}+X\_{2}$ and, using linearization, we determine the possible eigenvalues of an arbitrary polynomial $p(X\_{1},X\_{2})$ in case $\mathcal{B}=\mathbb{C}$.
We consider the free additive convolution of two probability measures $μ$ and $ν$ on the real line and show that $μ\boxplusν$ is supported on a single interval if $μ$ and $ν$ each has single interval support. Moreover, the density of $μ\boxplusν$ is proven to vanish as a square root near the edges of its support if both $μ$ and $ν$ have power law behavior with exponents between $-1$ and $1$ near their edges. In particular, these results show the ubiquity of the conditions in our recent work on optimal local law at the spectral edges for addition of random matrices [4].
In classical probability the law of large numbers for the multiplicative convolution follows directly from the law for the additive convolution. In free probability this is not the case. The free additive law was proved by D. Voiculescu in 1986 for probability measures with bounded support and extended to all probability measures with first moment by J. M. Lindsay and V. Pata in 1997, while the free multiplicative law was proved only recently by G. Tucci in 2010. In this paper we extend Tucci's result to measures with unbounded support while at the same time giving a more elementary proof for …
In this article we study the influence of regularly varying probability measures on additive and multiplicative Boolean convolutions. We introduce the notion of Boolean subexponentiality (for additive Boolean convolution), which extends the notion of classical and free subexponentiality. We show that the distributions with regularly varying tails belong to the class of Boolean subexponential distributions. As an application we also study the behaviour of the Belinschi-Nica map. Breiman's theorem study the classical product convolution between regularly varying measures. We derive an analogous …
We develop an analytic theory of operator-valued additive free convolution in terms of subordination functions. In contrast to earlier investigations our functions are not just given by power series expansions, but are defined as Frechet analytic functions in all of the operator upper half plane. Furthermore, we do not have to assume that our state is tracial. Combining this new analytic theory of operator-valued free convolution with Anderson's selfadjoint version of the linearization trick we are able to provide a solution to the following general random matrix problem: How can we calculate …
We consider the framework of an operator-valued noncommutative probability space over a unital C*-algebra B. We show how for a B-valued distribution μone can define convolution powers with respect to free additive convolution and with respect to Boolean convolution, where the exponent considered in the power is a suitably chosen linear map ηfrom B to B, instead of being a non-negative real number. More precisely, the Boolean convolution power is defined whenever ηis completely positive, while the free additive convolution power is defined whenever η- 1 is completely positive (where 1 stands fo…
Let M denote the space of Borel probability measures on the real line. For every nonnegative t we consider the transformation $\mathbb B_t : M \to M$ defined for any given element in M by taking succesively the the (1+t) power with respect to free additive convolution and then the 1/(1+t) power with respect to Boolean convolution of the given element. We show that the family of maps {\mathbb B_t|t\geq 0} is a semigroup with respect to the operation of composition and that, quite surprisingly, every $\mathbb B_t$ is a homomorphism for the operation of free multiplicative convolution. We prove t…
We introduce a class of independence relations, which include free, Boolean and monotone independence, in operator valued probability. We show that this class of independence relations have a matricial extension property so that we can easily study their associated convolutions via Voiculescu's fully matricial function theory. Based the matricial extension property, we show that many results can be generalized to multi-variable cases. Besides free, Boolean and monotone independence convolutions, we will focus on two important convolutions, which are orthogonal and subordination additive convol…
We give a streamlined proof of the limit theorems for the free additive convolution of infinitesimal triangular arrays of probability measures on the real line. The result was first proved by Chistyakov and Götze using analytic subordination.
Belinschi and Nica introduced a composition semigroup on the set of probability measures. Using this semigroup, they introduced a free divisibility indicator, from which one can know whether a probability measure is freely infinitely divisible or not. In this paper we further investigate this indicator, introduce a multiplicative version of it and are able to show many properties. Specifically, on the first half of the paper, we calculate how the indicator changes with respect to free and Boolean powers; we prove that free and Boolean 1/2-stable laws have free divisibility indicators equal to …
We investigate relations between additive convolution semigroup and max-convolution semigroup through the law of large numbers for the free multiplicative convolution. Based on the relation, we give a formula related with Belinschi-Nica semigroup and max-Belinschi-Nica semigroup. Finally, we give several limit theorems for classical, free and Boolean extreme values.
It has been shown by Voiculescu and Biane that the analytic subordination property holds for free additive and multiplicative convolutions. In this paper, we present an operatorial approach to subordination for free multiplicative convolutions. This study is based on the concepts of `freeness with subordination', or `s-free independence', and `orthogonal independence', introduced recently in the context of free additive convolutions. In particular, we introduce and study the associated multiplicative convolutions and construct related operators, called `subordination operators' and `subordinat…
In this paper we define cumulants for finite free convolution. We give a moment-cumulant formula and show that these cumulants satisfy desired properties: they are additive with respect to finite free convolution and they approach free cumulants as the dimension goes to infinity.
