We consider an inverse problem for the Boltzmann equation with nonlinear collision operator in dimensions $n\geq 2$. We show that the kinetic collision kernel can be uniquely determined from the incoming-to-outgoing mappings on the boundary of the domain provided that the kernel satisfies a monotonicity condition. Furthermore, a reconstruction formula is also derived. The key methodology is based on the higher-order linearization scheme to reduce a nonlinear equation into simpler linear equations by introducing multiple small parameters into the original equation.
We consider an inverse problem for the nonlinear Boltzmann equation near the equilibrium. Our goal is to determine the collision kernel in the Boltzmann equation from the knowledge of the Albedo operator. Our approach relies on a linearization technique as well as the injectivity of the Gauss-Weierstrass transform.
We prove the existence of global renormalized solutions to the Boltzmann equation in bounded domain with incoming boundary condition, with non-cutoff collision kernels. Thus we extend the results of \cite{villani2002noncutoff} for whole spaces or periodic domain to bounded domains endorsed with incoming boundary condition.
We solve the Cauchy problem associated to the space homogeneous Boltzmann equation with an angle-potential singular concentration modeling the collision kernel, proposed in 2013 by Bobylev and Potapenko. The potential under consideration ranges from Coulomb to hard spheres cases. However, the motivation of such a collision kernel is to treat the case of Coulomb potentials, on which this particular form of collision operator is well defined. We also show that the scaled angle-potential singular concentration in a grazing collisions limit makes the Boltzmann operator converge in the sense of dis…
We investigate the Boltzmann equation with spatial smearing, diffusive boundary conditions, and Lions' collision kernel. Both, the physical as well as the velocity space, are assumed to be bounded. Existence and uniqueness of a stationary solution, which is a probability density, has been demonstrated in [3] under a certain smallness assumption on the collision term. We prove that whenever there is a stationary solution then it is a.e. positively bounded from below and above.
In [L. Liu and S. Jin, Multiscale Model. Simult., 16, 1085-1114, 2018], spectral convergence and long-time decay of the numerical solution towards the global equilibrium of the stochastic Galerkin approximation for the Boltzmann equation with random inputs in the initial data and collision kernel for hard potentials and Maxwellian molecules under Grad's angular cutoff were established using the hypocoercive properties of the collisional kinetic model. One assumption for the random perturbation of the collision kernel is that the perturbation is in the order of the Knudsen number, which can be …
In this paper we prove the strong and time-averaged strong convergence to equilibrium for solutions (with general initial data) of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Fermi-Dirac particles. The assumption on the collision kernel includes the Coulomb potential with a weaker angular cutoff. The proof is based on moment estimates, entropy dissipation inequalities, regularity of the collision gain operator, and a new observation that many collision kernels are larger than or equal to some completely positive kernels, which enables us to avoid dealing with the convergence problem of th…
We establish the $L^1$ weighted propagation properties for solutions of the Boltzmann equation with hard potentials and non-integrable angular components in the collision kernel. Our method identifies null forms by angular averaging and deploys moment estimates of solutions to the Boltzmann equation whose summability is achieved by introducing the new concept of Mittag-Leffler moments - extensions of $L^1$ exponentially weighted norms. Such $L^1$ weighted norms of solutions to the Boltzmann equation are, both, generated and propagated in time and the characterization of their corresponding Mit…
In this paper, we deal with (angular cut-off) Boltzmann equation with soft potential ($-3<γ<0$). In particular, we construct a unique global solution in $L^\infty_{x,v}$ which converges to global equilibrium asymptotically provided that initial data has a large amplitude but with sufficiently small relative entropy. Because frequency multiplier is not uniformly positive anymore, unlike hard potential case, time-involved velocity weight will be used to derive sub-exponential decay of the solution. Motivated by recent development of $L^2\mbox{-}L^\infty$ approach also, we introduce some modified…
The global classical solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equation with small initial data in the whole space is constructed through a zero Knudsen number limit from the solutions to the Boltzmann equation with general collision kernels. The key point is the uniform estimate of the Sobolev norm on the global solutions to the Boltzmann equation.
We study Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation when quantum effects are taken into account in dilute gas dynamics. By employing new estimates on trilinear terms of collision kernels, we prove the global existence of the classical solution to Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation near equilibrium. Furthermore, the limit from Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation to incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations is justified rigorously. The corresponding formal analysis was given in the thesis of Zakrevskiy \cite{Zakrevskiy}
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation for bosons with a singular collision kernel, the weak-coupling limit of a large system of Bose-Einstein particles interacting through inverse power law. Global well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem is proved in a periodic box near equilibrium for initial data satisfying high temperature condition.
We derive lower bounds on the resolvent operator for the linearized steady Boltzmann equation over weighted L1 Banach spaces in velocity, comparable to those derived by Pogan & Zumbrun in an analogous weighted L2 Hilbert space setting. These show in particular that the operator norm of the resolvent kernel is unbounded in Lp(R) for all $1<p \leq \infty$, resolving an apparent discrepancy in behavior between the two settings suggested by previous work.
We prove regularization properties in short time for inhomogeneous kinetic equations whose collision kernel behaves like a fractional power of the Laplacian in velocity. We treat a fractional Kolmogorov equation and the linearized Boltzmann equation without cutoff (for hard potentials).
A semilinear parabolic problem of second order with an unknown time-convolution kernel is considered. The missing kernel is recovered from an additional integral measurement. The existence, uniqueness and regularity of a weak solution is addressed. We design a numerical algorithm based on Rothe's method, derive a priori estimates and prove convergence of iterates towards the exact solution.
In this paper we consider an inverse problem for the time dependent linear Boltzmann equation. It concerns the identification of the coefficients via a finite number of measurements on the boundary. We prove that the total extinction coefficient and the collision kernel can be uniquely determined by at most k measurements on the boundary, provided that these coefficients belong to a finite k-dimensional vector space.
We study the creation and propagation of exponential moments of solutions to the spatially homogeneous $d$-dimensional Boltzmann equation. In particular, when the collision kernel is of the form $|v-v_*|^βb(\cos(θ))$ for $β\in (0,2]$ with $\cos(θ)= |v-v_*|^{-1}(v-v_*)\cdot σ$ and $σ\in \mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, and assuming the classical cut-off condition $ b(\cos(θ))$ integrable in $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, we prove that there exists $a > 0$ such that moments with weight $\exp(a \min{t,1} |v|^β)$ are finite for $t>0$, where $a$ only depends on the collision kernel and the initial mass and energy. We propo…
We study the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwell molecules, and its $1$-dimensional model, the Kac equation. We prove propagation in time of stretched exponential moments of their weak solutions, both for the angular cutoff and the angular non-cutoff case. The order of the stretched exponential moments in question depends on the singularity rate of the angular kernel of the Boltzmann and the Kac equation. One of the main tools we use are Mittag-Leffler moments, which generalize the exponential ones.
As for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation of Maxwellian molecules with the fractional Fokker-Planck diffusion term, we consider the Cauchy problem for its Fourier-transformed version, which can be viewed as a kinetic model for the stochastic time-evolution of characteristic functions associated with the symmetric stable Levy process and the Maxwellian collision dynamics. Under a non-cutoff assumption on the kernel, we establish a global existence theorem with maximum growth estimate, uniqueness and stability of solutions.
This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. We establish the global-in-time existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic stability for solutions nearby the relativistic Maxwellian. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. We assume the generic hard-interaction and soft-interaction conditions on the collision kernel that were derived by Dudyński and Ekiel-Je$\dot{\text{z}}$ewska (Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{115}(4):607--629, 1985), and our assumptions include the case of Israel particles (J. Math. Phys. \textbf{4}:1163--1181, 1963). In this physical s…
The quantum Boltzmann-Bose equation describes a large system of Bose-Einstein particles in the weak-coupling regime. If the particle interaction is governed by the inverse power law, the corresponding collision kernel has angular singularity. In this paper, we give a constructive proof of the coercivity estimate for the linearized quantum Boltzmann-Bose operator to capture the effects of the singularity and the fugacity. Precisely, the estimate explicitly reveals the dependence on the fugacity parameter before the Bose-Einstein condensation. With the coercivity estimate, the global in time wel…
In the following work, we consider the Boltzmann equation that models a polyatomic gas by representing the microscopic internal energy by a continuous variable I. Under some convenient assumptions on the collision cross-section $\mathcal{B}$, we prove that the linearized Boltzmann operator $\mathcal{L}$ of this model is a Fredholm operator. For this, we write $\mathcal{L}$ as a perturbation of the collision frequency multiplication operator, and we prove that the perturbation operator $\mathcal{K}$ is compact. The result is established after inspecting the kernel form of $\mathcal{K}$ and prov…
We study the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation for massless particles in an FLRW background with scattering kernels in a certain range of soft and hard potentials. We obtain the future global existence of small solutions in a weighted $L^1\cap L^\infty$ space.
In this work, we are concerned with the regularities of the solutions to Boltzmann equation with the physical collision kernels for the full range of intermolecular repulsive potentials, $r^{-(p-1)}$ with $p>2$. We give the new and constructive upper and lower bounds for the collision operator in terms of standard fractional Sobolev norm. As an application, we prove that the strong solutions obtained by Desvillettes \& Mouhot \cite{dm} to homogeneous Boltzmann equation and classical solutions obtained by Gressman-Strain \cite{gs1,gs2} or Alexandre-Morimoto-Ukai-Xu-Yang \cite{amuxy3,amuxy5} for…
We prove the appearance of an explicit lower bound on the solution to the full Boltzmann equation in the torus for a broad family of collision kernels including in particular long-range interaction models, under the assumption of some uniform bounds on some hydrodynamic quantities. This lower bound is independent of time and space. When the collision kernel satisfies Grad's cutoff assumption, the lower bound is a global Maxwellian and its asymptotic behavior in velocity is optimal, whereas for non-cutoff collision kernels the lower bound we obtain decreases exponentially but faster than the Ma…
We show that the Smoluchowski coagulation equation with the solvable kernels $K(x,y)$ equal to $2$, $x+y$ or $xy$ is contractive in suitable Laplace norms. In particular, this proves exponential convergence to a self-similar profile in these norms. These results are parallel to similar properties of Maxwell models for Boltzmann-type equations, and extend already existing results on exponential convergence to self-similarity for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation.
We prove a linear inequality between the entropy and entropy dissipation functionals for the linear Boltzmann operator (with a Maxwellian equilibrium background). This provides a positive answer to the analogue of Cercignani's conjecture for this linear collision operator. Our result covers the physically relevant case of hard-spheres interactions as well as Maxwellian kernels, both with and without a cut-off assumption. For Maxwellian kernels, the proof of the inequality is surprisingly simple and relies on a general estimate of the entropy of the gain operator due to Matthes and Toscani (201…
This work is devoted to the analysis of the linear Boltzmann equation in a bounded domain, in the presence of a force deriving from a potential. The collision operator is allowed to be degenerate in the following two senses: (1) the associated collision kernel may vanish in a large subset of the phase space; (2) we do not assume that it is bounded below by a Maxwellian at infinity in velocity. We study how the association of transport and collision phenomena can lead to convergence to equilibrium, using concepts and ideas from control theory. We prove two main classes of results. On the one ha…
Boundary effects are central to the dynamics of the dilute particles governed by Boltzmann equation. In this paper, we study both the diffuse reflection and the specular reflection boundary value problems for Boltzmann equation with soft potential, in which the collision kernel is ruled by the inverse power law. For the diffuse reflection boundary condition, based on an $L^2$ argument and its interplay with intricate $L^\infty$ analysis for the linearized Boltzmann equation, we first establish the global existence and then obtain the exponential decay in $L^\infty$ space for the nonlinear Bolt…
We consider the Boltzmann equations with cutoff collision kernels in bounded domains. For the initial data with finite physical bounds, we prove the existence of global-in-time renormalized solutions in the sense of DiPerna-Lions endowed with incoming boundary condition. Moreover, we justify the limit as the Knudsen number $ε\rightarrow 0$ to Leray solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions from renormalized solutions of the scaled Boltzmann equations when the incoming data are close to the global Maxwellian in the sense of the boundar…
For the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations with random uncertainties from the initial data or collision kernels, we proved the sensitivity analysis and energy estimates uniformly with respect to the Knudsen number in the diffusive scaling using hypocoercivity method. As a consequence, we also justified the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson limit with random inputs. In particular, for the first time, we obtain the precise convergence rate {\em without} employing any results based on Hilbert expansion. We not only generalized the previous deterministic Navier-Stokes-Poisson limits to random i…
This manuscript investigates the following aspects of the one dimensional dissipative Boltzmann equation associated to variable hard-spheres kernel: (1) we show the optimal cooling rate of the model by a careful study of the system satisfied by the solution's moments, (2) give existence and uniqueness of measure solutions, and (3) prove the existence of a non-trivial self-similar profile, i.e. homogeneous cooling state, after appropriate scaling of the equation. The latter issue is based on compactness tools in the set of Borel measures. More specifically, we apply a dynamical fixed point theo…
In this paper, we establish the global in time hydrodynamic limit of Boltzmann equation to the planar rarefaction wave of compressible Euler system in three dimensional space $x\in\mathbb{R}^3$ for general collision kernels. Our approch is based on a generalized Hilbert expansion, and a recent $L^2-L^\infty$ framework. In particular, we improve the $L^2$-estimate to be a localized version because the planar rarefaction wave is indeed a one-dimensional wave which makes the source terms to be not integrable in the $L^2$ energy estimate of three dimensional problem. We also point out that the wav…
The spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with hard potentials is considered for measure valued initial data having finite mass and energy. We prove the existence of \emph{weak measure solutions}, with and without angular cutoff on the collision kernel; the proof in particular makes use of an approximation argument based on the Mehler transform. Moment production estimates in the usual form and in the exponential form are obtained for these solutions. Finally for the Grad angular cutoff, we also establish uniqueness and strong stability estimate on these solutions.
In this work, we study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzamnn equation with Maxwellian molecules. We prove that this Cauchy problem enjoys Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect, that means the smoothing properties is same as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional harmonic oscillator. The power of this fractional is exactly the singular index of non-cutoff collisional kernel of Boltzmann operator. So that we get the regularity of solution in the Gevery class with the sharp power and the optimal exponential decay of solutions. …
The study of positivity of solutions to the Boltzmann equation goes back to Carleman (1933), and the initial argument of Carleman was developed byPulvirenti-Wennberg (1997), the second author and Briant (2015). The appearance of a lower bound with Gaussian decay had however remained an open question for long-range interactions (the so-called non-cutoff collision kernels). We answer this question and establish such Gaussian lower bound for solutions to the Boltzmann equation without cutoff, in the case of hard and moderately soft potentials, with spatial periodic conditions, and under the sole …
We consider certain Boltzmann type equations on a bounded physical and a bounded velocity space under the presence of both, reflective as well as diffusive boundary conditions. We introduce conditions on the shape of the physical space and on the relation between the reflective and the diffusive part in the boundary conditions such that the associated Knudsen type semigroup can be extended to time $t\in\mathbb{R}$. Furthermore, we provide conditions under which there exists a unique global solution to a Boltzmann type equation for time $t\ge 0$ or for time $t\in [τ_0,\infty)$ for some $τ_0<0$ …
We investigate the properties of the collision operator associated to the linear Boltzmann equation for dissipative hard-spheres arising in granular gas dynamics. We establish that, as in the case of non-dissipative interactions, the gain collision operator is an integral operator whose kernel is made explicit. One deduces from this result a complete picture of the spectrum of the collision operator in an Hilbert space setting, generalizing results from T. Carleman to granular gases. In the same way, we obtain from this integral representation of the gain operator that the semigroup in $L^1(\R…
In this paper, we study the generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) based stochastic Galerkin method for the linear semiconductor Boltzmann equation under diffusive scaling and with random inputs from an anisotropic collision kernel and the random initial condition. While the numerical scheme and the proof of uniform-in-Knudsen-number regularity of the distribution function in the random space has been introduced in [Jin-Liu-16'], the main goal of this paper is to first obtain a sharper estimate on the regularity of the solution-an exponential decay towards its local equilibrium, which then lead to…
We prove the sharp regularizing estimates for the gain term of the Boltzmann collision operator including hard sphere, hard potential and Maxwell molecule models. Our new estimates characterize both regularization and convolution properties of the gain term and have the following features. The regularizing exponent is sharp both in the $L^2$ based inhomogeneous and homogeneous Sobolev spaces which is exact the exponent of the kinetic part of collision kernel. The functions in these estimates belong to a wider scope of (weighted) Lebesgue spaces than the previous regularizing estimates. Further…
A new coercivity estimate on the spectral gap of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator for multiple species is proved. The assumptions on the collision kernels include hard and Maxwellian potentials under Grad's angular cut-off condition. Two proofs are given: a non-constructive one, based on the decomposition of the collision operator into a compact and a coercive part, and a constructive one, which exploits the "cross-effects" coming from collisions between different species and which yields explicit constants. Furthermore, the essential spectra of the linearized collision operator and…
Consider 3D Boltzmann equation in convex domains with diffusive-reflection boundary condition. We study the hydrodynamic limits as the Knudsen number and Strouhal number $ε\rightarrow 0^+$. Using the Hilbert expansion, we rigorously justify that the solution of stationary/evolutionary problem converges to that of the steady/unsteady Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. This is the first paper to justify the hydrodynamic limits of nonlinear Boltzmann equations with hard-sphere collision kernel in bounded domain in the $L^{\infty}$ sense. The proof relies on a novel analysis on the boundary layer effec…
In this paper, we are concerned with the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in three-dimensional spatial space without angular cutoff in a rectangular duct with or without physical boundary conditions. Near a local Maxwellian with macroscopic quantities given by rarefaction wave solution of one-dimensional compressible Euler equations, we establish the time-asymptotic stability of planar rarefaction wave solutions for the Cauchy problem to VPB system with periodic or specular-reflection boundary condition. In particular, we successfully introduce physical boundaries, namely, specular-reflec…
We use some new nonlinear estimates found in \cite {LM} to improve the results of \cite{GL} that establish the acoustic limit for DiPerna-Lions solutions of Boltzmann equation in three ways. First, we enlarge the class of collision kernels treated to that found in \cite{LM}, thereby treating all classical collision kernels to which the DiPerna-Lions theory applies. Second, we improve the scaling of the kinetic density fluctuations with Knudsen number from $O(ε^m)$ for some $m>\frac12$ to $O(ε^\frac12)$. Third, we extend the results from periodic domains to bounded domains with impermeable boun…
Based on a recent $L^{2}{-}L^{\infty}$ framework, we establish the acoustic limit of the Boltzmann equation for general collision kernels. The scaling of the fluctuations with respect to Knudsen number is optimal. Our approach is based on a new analysis of the compressible Euler limit of the Boltzmann equation, as well as refined estimates of Euler and acoustic solutions.
We study weak solutions of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules with a logarithmic singularity of the collision kernel for grazing collisions. Even though in this situation the Boltzmann operator enjoys only a very weak coercivity estimate, it still leads to strong smoothing of weak solutions in accordance to the smoothing expected by an analogy with a logarithmic heat equation.
