A filament of liquid is usually unstable and breaks up into small droplets, while a filament of polymer solution is known to be quite stable against such instability, and they form a stable configuration of filament connecting two spherical droplets. If the droplets are fixed in space, the liquid flows from the filament region to the droplet region to reduce the surface energy and the filament gets thinner. If the whole liquid is placed in another viscous fluid, the droplets approach each other, and the filament can get thicker. Here we study the dynamics of such system. We derive time evolution equations for the radius and the length of the filament taking into account the fluid flux from filament to droplets and the motion of the droplets. We will show that (a) if the centers of the droplets are fixed, the filament thins following the classical prediction of Entov and Hinch, and that (b) if the droplets are mobile (subject to the Stokes drag in the viscous medium), the thinning of the filament is suppressed, and under certain conditions, the filament thickens. This theory explains the phenomena observed by Yang and Xu [Phys. Fluids 20, 043101 (2008)] in four-roller mill device.
We investigate the break-up of Newtonian/viscoelastic droplets in a viscoelastic/Newtonian matrix under the hydrodynamic conditions of a confined shear flow. Our numerical approach is based on a combination of Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Difference (FD) schemes. LBM are used to model two immiscible fluids with variable viscosity ratio (i.e. the ratio of the droplet to matrix viscosity); FD schemes are used to model viscoelasticity, and the kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbe…
When a polymer solution is uniaxially stretched and held fixed at both ends, the solution quickly separates into droplets connected by strings and takes the beads-on-string structure. The string then becomes thinner by capillary forces. Here we develop a theoretical framework on viscoelastic fluids based on Onsager principle, and apply it to the dynamics of viscoelastic filaments. We show that the beads-on-string structure is a thermodynamic quasi-equilibrium state, and derive an equation for the coexistence condition in the pseudo-equilibrium state. Using the condition, we solve the evolution…
Many swimming microorganisms, such as bacteria and sperm, use flexible flagella to move through viscoelastic media in their natural environments. In this paper we address the effects a viscoelastic fluid has on the motion and beating patterns of elastic filaments. We treat both a passive filament which is actuated at one end, and an active filament with bending forces arising from internal motors distributed along its length. We describe how viscoelasticity modifies the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the filaments, and how these modified forces affect the beating patterns. We show how high vis…
The deformation and break-up of Newtonian/viscoelastic droplets are studied in confined shear flow. Our numerical approach is based on a combination of Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and finite difference schemes, the former used to model two immiscible fluids with variable viscous ratio, and the latter used to model the polymer dynamics. The kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with Peterlin's closure (FENE-P). We quantify the droplet response by changing the polymer relaxation time $τ…
The effects of viscoelasticity on the dynamics and break-up of fluid threads in microfluidic T-junctions are investigated using numerical simulations of dilute polymer solutions at changing the Capillary number ($\mbox {Ca}$), i.e. at changing the balance between the viscous forces and the surface tension at the interface, up to $\mbox{Ca} \approx 3 \times 10^{-2}$. A Navier-Stokes (NS) description of the solvent based on the lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) is here coupled to constitutive equations for finite extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with the closure proposed by Peterlin (FENE-P …
Motivated by the swimming of sperm in the non-Newtonian fluids of the female mammalian reproductive tract, we examine the swimming of filaments in the nonlinear viscoelastic Upper Convected Maxwell model. We obtain the swimming velocity and hydrodynamic force exerted on an infinitely long cylinder with prescribed beating pattern. We use these results to examine the swimming of a simplified sliding-filament model for a sperm flagellum. Viscoelasticity tends to decrease swimming speed, and changes in the beating patterns due to viscoelasticity can reverse swimming direction.
The stability of shapes formed by three viscoelastic droplets during their arrested coalescence has been investigated using micromanipulation experiments. Addition of a third droplet to arrested droplet doublets is shown to be controlled by the balance between interfacial pressures driving coalescence and internal elasticity that resists total consolidation. The free fluid available within the droplets controls the transmission of stress during droplet combination and allows connections to occur via formation of a neck between the droplets. The anisotropy of three-droplet systems adds complexi…
The formation and destabilisation of viscoelastic filaments are of importance in many industrial and biological processes. Filament instabilities have been observed for viscoelastic fluids but recently also for soft elastic solids. In this work, we address the central question how to connect the dynamical behavior of viscoelastic liquids to that of soft elastic solids. We take advantage of a biopolymer material whose viscoelastic properties can be tuned over a very large range by its pH, and study the destabilization and ensuing instabilities in uniaxial extensional deformation. In agreement w…
Liquid drops on soft solids generate strong deformations below the contact line, resulting from a balance of capillary and elastic forces. The movement of these drops may cause strong, potentially singular dissipation in the soft solid. Here we show that a drop on a soft substrate moves by surfing a ridge: the initially flat solid surface is deformed into a sharp ridge whose orientation angle depends on the contact line velocity. We measure this angle for water on a silicone gel and develop a theory based on the substrate rheology. We quantitatively recover the dynamic contact angle and provid…
The retraction of an impacting droplet on a non-wetting substrate is often associated with the formation of a Worthington jet, which is fed by the retracting liquid. A non-Newtonian rheology of the liquid is known to affect the retraction of the impacting droplet. Here we present a novel phenomenon related to the impact of viscoelastic droplets on non-wettable substrates. We reveal that the viscoelasticity of the liquid results in an \emph{elastocapillary} regime in the stretching Worthington jet, distinguished by a pinned contact line and a slender jet that does not detach from the droplet. W…
The stable configurations formed by two viscoelastic, ellipsoid-shaped droplets during their arrested coalescence has been investigated using micromanipulation experiments. Ellipsoidal droplets are produced by millifluidic emulsification of petrolatum into a yield stress fluid that preserves their elongated shape. The liquid meniscus between droplets can transmit stress and instigate movement of the droplets, from their initial relative position, in order to minimize doublet surface energy. The action of the liquid meniscus causes the ellipsoidal droplets to undergo rolling and restructuring e…
The actin cytoskeleton of adherent tissue cells often condenses into filament bundles contracted by myosin motors, so-called stress fibers, which play a crucial role in the mechanical interaction of cells with their environment. Stress fibers are usually attached to their environment at the endpoints, but possibly also along their whole length. We introduce a theoretical model for such contractile filament bundles which combines passive viscoelasticity with active contractility. The model equations are solved analytically for two different types of boundary conditions. A free boundary correspo…
An analytical expression of the coefficient of restitution for viscoelastic materials is derived for the viscous-dominant case, such as collisions of polymeric melt. The recently proposed normal impact force model between two colliding viscoelastic droplets is employed. To analytically solve the nonlinear differential equation of deformation caused by the other droplet, a perturbation method is applied. By combining the forward collision and the inverse collision, we can get an analytical expression for the coefficient of restitution, which can also be used to further analyze other properties …
The effects of elasticity on the break-up of liquid threads in microfluidic cross-junctions is investigated using numerical simulations based on the "lattice Boltzmann models" (LBM). Working at small Capillary numbers, we investigate the effects of non-Newtonian phases in the transition from droplet formation at the cross-junction (DCJ) and droplet formation downstream of the cross-junction (DC) (Liu & Zhang, ${\it Phys. Fluids.}$ ${\bf 23}$, 082101 (2011)). Viscoelasticity is found to influence the break-up point of the threads, which moves closer to the cross-junction and stabilizes. This is…
Dynamics of the pendant drop coalescing with a sessile drop to form a single daughter droplet is known to form a bridge. The bridge evolution begins with a point contact between the two drops leading to a liquid neck of size comparable to the diameter of the drops. To probe this phenomenon in polymeric fluids, we quantify the neck radius growth during coalescence using high speed imaging. In the current study, we unveil the existence of three regimes on basis of concentration ratio $c/c^*$ namely, inertio-elastic $c/c^*<c_e/c^*$, viscoelastic $c_e/c^*<c/c^*<20$ and elasticity dominated regimes…
The dynamic properties of a model transient network have been studied by dynamic light scattering. The network is formed by microemulsion droplets linked by telechelic polymers (modified hydrophilic polymers with two grafted hydrophobic stickers). We compare the properties of two networks that are similar but for the residence time of the hydrophobic stickers in the droplets. The results are interpreted according to the so-called two-fluids model, which was initially developed for semidilute polymer solutions and which we extend here to any Maxwellian viscoelastic medium characterized by its e…
We report a technique based on Fresnel diffraction with white illumination that permits the resolution of capillary surface patterns of less than 100 nanometers. We investigate Rayleigh Plateaux like instability on a viscoelastic capillary bridge and show that we can overcome the resolution limit of optical microscopy. The viscoelastic filaments are approximately 20 microns thick at the end of the thinning process when the instability sets in. The wavy distortions grow exponentially in time and the pattern is resolved by an image treatment that is based on an approximation of the measured risi…
Active forces occurring within cells can drive crucial biological processes that involve spontaneous organization and shape change, such as cell division. Motivated by recent in vitro experiments of nematic droplets of cytoskeletal filaments and motors that self-organize and divide, we present a minimal hydrodynamic model that combines the nonequilibrium kinetics of motor-filament interactions with equilibrium nematic phase separation. The motors organize within droplets and structure filaments into polarized aster defects. At large motor activity, they can even deform or divide the droplet, o…
The encapsulation and co-encapsulation of particles in microfluidic flows is essential in applications related to single-cell analysis and material synthesis. However, the whole encapsulation process is stochastic in nature, and its efficiency is limited by the so-called Poisson limit. We here demonstrate particle encapsulation and co-encapsulation in microfluidic devices having flow-focusing geometries with efficiency up to 2-folds larger than the stochastic limit imposed by the Poisson statistics. To this aim, we exploited the recently observed phenomenon of particle train formation in visco…
When pushed out of a syringe, polymer solutions form droplets attached by long and slender cylindrical filaments whose diameter decreases exponentially with time before eventually breaking. In the last stages of this process, a striking feature is the self-similarity of the solution shape near the end of the filament. This means that shapes at different times, if properly rescaled, collapse onto one universal shape. A theoretical description inspired by this similarity observation and based on the Oldroyd-B model was recently shown to disagree with existing experimental results. By revisiting …
Coalescence of sessile polymeric fluid drops on a partially wettable substrate exhibits a transition from inertial to viscoelastic regime at concentration ratio $c/c^* \sim 1$. Our findings unveil that the temporal evolution of the growing bridge height follows a power-law behaviour $t^b$, such that the coefficient $b$ continuously decreases from 2/3 in the inertial regime ($c/c^*<1$) to an asymptotic value of 1/2 in the visco-elastic regime ($c/c^*>1$). To account for fluid elasticity and characteristic time-scale in the viscoelastic regime, a modified thin film equation under lubrication app…
Soft substrates such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) enhance droplet nucleation during the condensation of water vapour, because their deformability inherently reduces the energetic threshold for heterogeneous nucleation relative to rigid substrates. However, this enhanced droplet nucleation is counteracted later in the condensation cycle, when the viscoelastic dissipation inhibits condensate droplet shedding from the substrate. Here, we show that bulk lubricant infusion in the soft substrate is a potential pathway for overcoming this limitation. We demonstrate that even 5% bulk lubricant infus…
The motion of a rotating helical body in a viscoelastic fluid is considered. In the case of force-free swimming, the introduction of viscoelasticity can either enhance or retard the swimming speed and locomotive efficiency, depending on the body geometry, fluid properties, and the body rotation rate. Numerical solutions of the Oldroyd-B equations show how previous theoretical predictions break down with increasing helical radius or with decreasing filament thickness. Helices of large pitch angle show an increase in swimming speed to a local maximum at a Deborah number of order unity. The numer…
The dynamics of a quasi two-dimensional isotropic droplet in a cholesteric liquid crystal medium under symmetric shear flow is studied by lattice Boltzmann simulations. We consider a geometry in which the flow direction is along the axis of the cholesteric, as this setup exhibits a significant viscoelastic response to external stress. We find that the dynamics depends upon the magnitude of the shear rate, the anchoring strength of the liquid crystal at the droplet interface and the chirality. While for low shear rate and weak interface anchoring the system shows a non-Newtonian behavior, a New…
The presence of a very small amount of high molecular weight polymer significantly delays the pinch-off singularity of a drop of water falling from a faucet, and leads to the formation of a long-lived cylindrical filament. In this paper we present experiments, numerical simulations, and theory which examines the pinch-off process in the presence of polymers. The numerical simulations are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. As a test case, we establish the conditions under which a small bead remains on the filament; we find that this is due to the asymmetry induced by the self-s…
We propose numerical simulations of viscoelastic fluids based on a hybrid algorithm combining Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Differences (FD) schemes, the former used to model the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations, and the latter used to model the polymer dynamics. The kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with Peterlin's closure (FENE-P). The numerical model is first benchmarked by characterizing the rheological behaviour of dilute homogeneous solutions in various configurat…
The effects of elasticity on filament thinning and breakup are investigated in microchannel cross flow. When a viscous solution is stretched by an external immiscible fluid, a low 100 ppm polymer concentration strongly affects the breakup process, compared to the Newtonian case. Qualitatively, polymeric filaments show much slower evolution, and their morphology features multiple connected drops. Measurements of filament thickness show two main temporal regimes: flow- and capillary-driven. At early times both polymeric and Newtonian fluids are flow-driven, and filament thinning is exponential. …
We show that the isotropic to nematic liquid crystalline phase transition of F-actin can be either continuous or discontinuous, depending critically on the filament length. For F-actin with average filament length > 3 um, we confirm that the transition is continuous in both filament alignment and local concentration. In contrast, for filament length < 2 um the F-actin solution undergoes a first order transition. Tactoidal droplets of co-existing isotropic and nematic domains were observed. Phenomena of nucleation-and-growth and spinodal decomposition both occur, depending sensitively on the ex…
Chirality is a recurrent theme in the study of biological systems, in which active processes are driven by the internal conversion of chemical energy into work. Bacterial flagella, acto-myosin filaments and microtubule bundles are active systems which are also intrinsically chiral. Despite some exploratory attempt to capture the relations between chirality and motility, no intrinsically chiral system has ever been analyzed so far. To address this gap in knowledge, here we study the effects of internal active forces and torques on a three-dimensional droplet of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) …
The present article highlights the role of non-Newtonian (elastic) effects on the droplet impact phenomenology at temperatures considerably higher than the boiling point, especially at or above the Leidenfrost regime. The Leidenfrost point (LFP) was found to decrease with increase in the impact Weber number (based on velocity just before the impact) for fixed polymer (Polyacrylamide, PAAM) concentrations. Water droplets fragmented at very low Weber numbers (~22), whereas the polymer droplets resisted fragmentation at much higher Weber numbers (~155). We also varied the polymer concentration an…
We present a continuum level analytical model of a droplet of active contractile fluid consisting of filaments and motors. We calculate the steady state flows that result from a splayed polarisation of the filaments. We account for the interaction with an arbitrary external medium by imposing a viscous friction at the fixed droplet boundary. We then show that the droplet has non-zero force dipole and quadrupole moments, the latter of which is essential for self-propelled motion of the droplet at low Reynolds' number. Therefore, this calculation describes a simple mechanism for the motility of …
Recent experiments have shown that liquid drops on highly deformable substrates exhibit mutual interactions. This is similar to the Cheerios effect, the capillary interaction of solid particles at a liquid interface, but now the roles of solid and liquid are reversed. Here we present a dynamical theory for this inverted Cheerios effect, taking into account elasticity, capillarity and the viscoelastic rheology of the substrate. We compute the velocity at which droplets attract, or repel, as a function of their separation. The theory is compared to a simplified model in which the viscoelastic di…
During detachment of a viscous fluid extruded from a nozzle a filament linking the droplet to the latter is formed. Under the effect of surface tension the filament thins until pinch off and final detachment of the droplet. In this paper we study the effect of the presence of individual particles trapped in the filament on the detachment dynamics using granular suspensions of small volume fractions (ϕ < 6%). We show that even a single particle strongly modifies the detachment dynamics. The particle perturbs the thinning of the thread and a large droplet of fluid around the particle is formed. …
The intriguing dynamics of a compound liquid-system comprising of water and (uncured) poly-dimethylsiloxane is explored in the present work. The viscoelastic nature of the film, coupled with the dynamics of evaporation, triggered a self-propulsion in the droplet, which gradually segued into the crumpling of the film, and finally culminated in the encapsulation of the water droplet by the polymer. The physics of the hitherto unreported phenomena has been explained via the development of an analytical model, by taking into account all the germane forces. It is conjectured that this symbiotic and…
The dynamics of the interface between two immiscible fluids in a rotating Hele-Shaw cell are studied experimentally, theoretically and by phase-field simulations of the H-S equations. As the central, denser fluid is centrifuged, it forms fingering patterns with long, thin radial filaments ended by a droplet, alternating with incoming fingers of the outer fluid. Simulations show the length (width) of the filaments to grow (decay) roughly exponentially, and the incoming finger tips to asymptotically approach a finite radius for n-fold symmetric initial conditions; these thus tend to a stationary…
