When a polymer solution is uniaxially stretched and held fixed at both ends, the solution quickly separates into droplets connected by strings and takes the beads-on-string structure. The string then becomes thinner by capillary forces. Here we develop a theoretical framework on viscoelastic fluids based on Onsager principle, and apply it to the dynamics of viscoelastic filaments. We show that the beads-on-string structure is a thermodynamic quasi-equilibrium state, and derive an equation for the coexistence condition in the pseudo-equilibrium state. Using the condition, we solve the evolution equation analytically and show that the string radius and the tensile stress vary exponentially as predicted by the classical theory of Entov and Hinch [J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech. 72, 31 (1997)], but the prefactor for the tensile stress is different from their theory and agrees with the numerical solutions of Clasen et al. [J. Fluid Mech. 556, 283 (2006)].
A filament of liquid is usually unstable and breaks up into small droplets, while a filament of polymer solution is known to be quite stable against such instability, and they form a stable configuration of filament connecting two spherical droplets. If the droplets are fixed in space, the liquid flows from the filament region to the droplet region to reduce the surface energy and the filament gets thinner. If the whole liquid is placed in another viscous fluid, the droplets approach each other, and the filament can get thicker. Here we study the dynamics of such system. We derive time evoluti…
The formation and destabilisation of viscoelastic filaments are of importance in many industrial and biological processes. Filament instabilities have been observed for viscoelastic fluids but recently also for soft elastic solids. In this work, we address the central question how to connect the dynamical behavior of viscoelastic liquids to that of soft elastic solids. We take advantage of a biopolymer material whose viscoelastic properties can be tuned over a very large range by its pH, and study the destabilization and ensuing instabilities in uniaxial extensional deformation. In agreement w…

Using Onsager variational principle, we study the dynamic coupling between the stress and the composition in polymer solution. In the original derivation of the two-fluid model [Doi and Onuki, J. Phys. II France {\bf 2}, 1631 (1992)], the polymer stress was introduced \emph{a priopri}, therefore a constitutive equation is required to close the equations. Based on our previous study of viscoelastic fluids with homogeneous composition [Phys. Rev. Fluids {\bf 3}, 084004 (2018)], we start with a dumbbell model for the polymer, and derive all dynamic equations using the Onsager variational principl…
The actin cytoskeleton of adherent tissue cells often condenses into filament bundles contracted by myosin motors, so-called stress fibers, which play a crucial role in the mechanical interaction of cells with their environment. Stress fibers are usually attached to their environment at the endpoints, but possibly also along their whole length. We introduce a theoretical model for such contractile filament bundles which combines passive viscoelasticity with active contractility. The model equations are solved analytically for two different types of boundary conditions. A free boundary correspo…
We report a technique based on Fresnel diffraction with white illumination that permits the resolution of capillary surface patterns of less than 100 nanometers. We investigate Rayleigh Plateaux like instability on a viscoelastic capillary bridge and show that we can overcome the resolution limit of optical microscopy. The viscoelastic filaments are approximately 20 microns thick at the end of the thinning process when the instability sets in. The wavy distortions grow exponentially in time and the pattern is resolved by an image treatment that is based on an approximation of the measured risi…
When pushed out of a syringe, polymer solutions form droplets attached by long and slender cylindrical filaments whose diameter decreases exponentially with time before eventually breaking. In the last stages of this process, a striking feature is the self-similarity of the solution shape near the end of the filament. This means that shapes at different times, if properly rescaled, collapse onto one universal shape. A theoretical description inspired by this similarity observation and based on the Oldroyd-B model was recently shown to disagree with existing experimental results. By revisiting …
The motion of a rotating helical body in a viscoelastic fluid is considered. In the case of force-free swimming, the introduction of viscoelasticity can either enhance or retard the swimming speed and locomotive efficiency, depending on the body geometry, fluid properties, and the body rotation rate. Numerical solutions of the Oldroyd-B equations show how previous theoretical predictions break down with increasing helical radius or with decreasing filament thickness. Helices of large pitch angle show an increase in swimming speed to a local maximum at a Deborah number of order unity. The numer…
Myosin motor proteins drive vigorous steady-state fluctuations in the actin cytoskeleton of cells. Endogenous embedded semiflexible filaments such as microtubules, or added filaments such as single-walled carbon nanotubes are used as novel tools to non-invasively track equilibrium and non-equilibrium fluctuations in such biopolymer networks. Here we analytically calculate shape fluctuations of semiflexible probe filaments in a viscoelastic environment, driven out of equilibrium by motor activity. Transverse bending fluctuations of the probe filaments can be decomposed into dynamic normal modes…
A number of commercial fluids, including synthetic automotive oils, food and consumer products containing polymer additives exhibit weakly rate-thickening responses in the final stages of capillarity-driven thinning, where a large accumulated strain and high extensional strain rate alter the thinning dynamics of the slender liquid filament. Consequently, the capillarity-driven thinning dynamics typically feature two distinct regions at the early and late stages of the filament breakup process, each dominated by distinct mechanisms. These features have been incorporated in a simple Inelastic Ra…
(abridged) We present a detailed derivation of a simple hydrodynamic two-fluid model, which aims at the description of the phase separation of non-entangled polymer solutions, where viscoelastic effects play a role. It is directly based upon the coarse-graining of a well-defined molecular model, such that all degrees of freedom have a clear and unambiguous molecular interpretation. The considerations are based upon a free-energy functional, and the dynamics is split into a conservative and a dissipative part, where the latter satisfies the Onsager relations and the Second Law of thermodynamics…
Mechanical properties of cellular structures, including the cell cytoskeleton, are increasingly used as biomarkers for disease diagnosis and fundamental studies in cell biology. Recent experiments suggest that the cell cytoskeleton and its permeating cytosol, can be described as a poroelastic (PE) material. Biot theory is the standard model used to describe PE materials. Yet, this theory does not account for the fluid viscous stress, which can lead to inaccurate predictions of the mechanics in the dilute filamentous network of the cytoskeleton. Here, we adopt a two-phase model that extends Bio…
