Using Onsager variational principle, we study the dynamic coupling between the stress and the composition in polymer solution. In the original derivation of the two-fluid model [Doi and Onuki, J. Phys. II France {\bf 2}, 1631 (1992)], the polymer stress was introduced \emph{a priopri}, therefore a constitutive equation is required to close the equations. Based on our previous study of viscoelastic fluids with homogeneous composition [Phys. Rev. Fluids {\bf 3}, 084004 (2018)], we start with a dumbbell model for the polymer, and derive all dynamic equations using the Onsager variational principle.
We use a hydrodynamic reciprocal approach to phoretic motion to derive general expressions for the electrophoretic and thermophoretic mobility of weakly charged colloids in aqueous electrolyte solutions. Our approach shows that phoretic motion can be understood in terms of the interfacial transport of thermodynamic excess quantities that arises when a colloid is kept stationary inside a bulk fluid flow. The obtained expressions for the mobilities are extensions of previously known results as they can account for different hydrodynamic boundary conditions at the colloidal surface, irrespective …
When a polymer solution is uniaxially stretched and held fixed at both ends, the solution quickly separates into droplets connected by strings and takes the beads-on-string structure. The string then becomes thinner by capillary forces. Here we develop a theoretical framework on viscoelastic fluids based on Onsager principle, and apply it to the dynamics of viscoelastic filaments. We show that the beads-on-string structure is a thermodynamic quasi-equilibrium state, and derive an equation for the coexistence condition in the pseudo-equilibrium state. Using the condition, we solve the evolution…
The application of a temperature gradient along a fluid-solid interface generates stresses in the fluid causing "thermo-osmotic" flow. Much of the understanding of this phenomenon is based on Derjaguin's work relating thermo-osmotic flows to the mechano-caloric effect, namely, the interfacial heat flow induced by a pressure gradient. This is done by using Onsager's reciprocity relationship for the equivalence of the thermo-osmotic and mechano-caloric cross-term transport coefficients. Both Derjaguin theory and Onsager framework for out-of-equilibrium systems are formulated in macroscopic therm…
Onsager's variational principle (OVP) was originally proposed by Lars Onsager in 1931 [L. Onsager, $Phys. Rev.$, 1931, $37$, 405]. This fundamental principle provides a very powerful tool for formulating thermodynamically consistent models. It can also be employed to find approximate solutions, especially in the study of soft matter dynamics. In this work, OVP is extended and applied to the dynamic modeling of active soft matter such as suspensions of bacteria and aggregates of animal cells. We first extend the general formulation of OVP to active matter dynamics where active forces are includ…
We construct the molecular model and the tensor model for the dynamics of the nematic phases of bent-core molecules and star molecules in incompressible fluid. We start from the molecular interaction and the molecule--fluid friction, and write down a general formulation based on the molecular shape and the free energy. Then we incorporate an Onsager-theory-based static tensor model that is determined by the molecular shape. In this way, the terms in the molecular model are fully determined by the molecular shape and expressed by physical parameters. For bent-core molecules and star molecules, …
We analyze one of the simplest active suspensions with complex dynamics: a suspension of immotile "Extensor" particles that exert active extensile dipolar stresses on the fluid in which they are immersed. This is relevant to several experimental systems, such as recently studied tripartite rods that create extensile flows by consuming a chemical fuel. We first describe the system through a Doi-Onsager kinetic theory based on microscopic modeling. This theory captures the active stresses produced by the particles that can drive hydrodynamic instabilities, as well as the steric interactions of r…
We discuss the dynamics of a bilayer membrane with partial slip boundary conditions between the monolayers and the bulk fluid. Using Onsager's variational principle to account for the associated dissipations, we derive the coupled dynamic equations for the membrane height and the excess lipid density. The newly introduced friction coefficients appear in the renormalized fluid viscosities. For ordinary lipid bilayer membranes, we find that it is generally justified to ignore the effects of permeation and parallel slip at the membrane surface.
We study the relaxation dynamics of a compressible bilayer vesicle with an asymmetry in the viscosity of the inner and outer fluid medium. First we explore the stability of the vesicle free energy which includes a coupling between the membrane curvature and the local density difference between the two monolayers. Two types of instabilities are identified: a small wavelength instability and a larger wavelength instability. Considering the bulk fluid viscosity and the inter-monolayer friction as the dissipation sources, we next employ Onsager's variational principle to derive the coupled equatio…
We derive the hydrodynamic equations of motion for a fluid of active particles described by under- damped Langevin equations that reduce to the Active-Brownian-Particle model, in the overdamped limit. The contraction into the hydrodynamic description is performed by locally averaging the par- ticle dynamics with the non-equilibrium many-particle probability density, whose formal expression is found in the physically relevant limit of high-friction through a multiple-time-scale analysis. This approach permits to identify the conditions under which self-propulsion can be subsumed into the fluid …
Governing equations for evolution of concentration and temperature in three-component systems were derived in the framework of classical irreversible thermodynamics using Onsager variational principle and were presented for solvent/solvent/polymer and solvent/polymer/polymer systems. The derivation was developed from the Gibbs equation of equilibrium thermodynamics using the local equilibrium hypothesis, Onsager reciprocal relations and Prigogine theorem for systems in mechanical equilibrium. It was shown that the details of mass and heat diffusion phenomena in a ternary system are completely …
We study the rheological signatures of departure from equilibrium in two-dimensional viscous fluids with and without internal spin. Under the assumption of isotropy, we provide the most general linear constitutive relations for stress and couple stress in terms of the velocity and spin fields. Invoking Onsager's regression hypothesis for fluctuations about steady states, we derive the Green-Kubo formulae relating the transport coefficients to time correlation functions of the fluctuating stress. In doing so, we verify the claim that one of the non-equilibrium transport coefficients, the odd-vi…
We study the dynamics of a fluid rising in a capillary tube with corners. In the cornered tube, unlike the circular tube, fluid rises with two parts, the bulk part where the entire cross-section is occupied by the fluid, and the finger part where the cross-section is only partially filled. Using Onsager principle, we derive coupled time-evolution equations for the two parts. We show that (a) at the early stage of rising, the dynamics is dominated by the bulk part and the fluid height $h_0(t)$ shows the same behavior as that in the circular tube, and (b) at the late stage, the bulk part stops r…
