We prove that a cuspidal automorphic representation of GL(3) over any number field is determined by the quadratic twists of its central value. In the case of a non-Gelbart-Jacquet lift, the result is conditional on the analytic behavior of a certain Euler product. We deduce the nonvanishing of infinitely many quadratic twists of central values. This generalizes a result of Chinta and Diaconu that was valid only over the field of rational numbers and explored only for Gelbart-Jacquet lifts.
We prove an asymptotic for the second moment of quadratic twists of a modular $L$-function. This was previously known conditionally on GRH by the work of Soundararajan and Young.
We compute a lower bound of the canonical height on quadratic twists of certain elliptic curves. Also we show a simple method for constructing families of quadratic twists with an explicit rational point. % from cubic polynomials. Using the above lower bound, we show that the explicit rational point is primitive as an element of the Mordell--Weil group.
In this paper we prove a relation between the period of an elliptic curve and the period of its real and imaginary quadratic twists. This relation is often misstated in the literature.
We present theoretical and numerical evidence for a random matrix theoretic approach to a conjecture about vanishings of quadratic twists of certain L-functions
We investigate the average rank in the family of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, when the curves are ordered using the canonical height of their lowest non-torsion rational point.
We calculate the first and second moments of L-functions in the family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve E over F_q[x], asymptotically in the limit as the degree of the twists tends to infinity. We also compute moments involving derivatives of L-functions over quadratic twists, enabling us to deduce lower bounds on the correlations between the analytic ranks of the twists of two distinct curves.
Given a family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, we investigate the average rank in the subfamily of twists having a nontorsion rational point of almost minimal height. We show in particular that the average analytic rank is greater than one.
In this paper, we investigate the properties of well-rounded twists of a given ideal lattice of an imaginary quadratic field $K$. We show that every ideal lattice $I$ of $K$ has at least one well-rounded twist lattice. Moreover, we provide an explicit algorithm to compute all well-rounded twists of $I$.
In this paper, we study central values of the family of quadratic twists of modular $L$-functions of moduli $8p$, with $p$ ranging over odd primes. Assuming the truth of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we establish a positive proportion non-vanishing result for the corresponding $L$-values.
We study the second moment of the central values of quadratic twists of a modular $L$-function. Unconditionally, we obtain a lower bound which matches the conjectured asymptotic formula, while on GRH we prove the asymptotic formula itself.
We investigate the number of curves having a rational point of almost minimal height in the family of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve. This problem takes its origin in the work of Hooley, who asked this question in the setting of real quadratic fields. In particular, he showed an asymptotic estimate for the number of such fields with almost minimal fundamental unit. Our main result establishes the analogue asymptotic formula in the setting of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve.
We investigate the regulators of elliptic curves with rank 1 in some families of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve. In particular, we formulate some conjectures on the average size of these regulators. We also describe an efficient algorithm to compute explicitly some of the invariants of an odd quadratic twist of an elliptic curve (regulator, order of the Tate-Shafarevich group, etc.) and we discuss the numerical data that we obtain and compare it with our predictions.
Watkins conjectured that for an elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ of Mordell-Weil rank $r$, the modular degree of $E$ is divisible by $2^r$. If $E$ has non-trivial rational $2$-torsion, we prove the conjecture for all the quadratic twists of $E$ by squarefree integers with sufficiently many prime factors.
In this paper, we show that, by applying some results on modular symbols, for a family of certain elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb Q$, there is a large class of explicit quadratic twists whose complex $L$-series does not vanish at $s=1$, and for which the $2$-part of Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture holds.
Ideal lattices in the plane coming from real quadratic number fields have been investigated by several authors in the recent years. In particular, it has been proved that every such ideal has a basis that can be twisted by the action of the diagonal group into a Minkowski reduced basis for a well-rounded lattice. We explicitly study such twists on the canonical bases of ideals, which are especially important in arithmetic theory of quadratic number fields and binary quadratic forms. Specifically, we prove that every fixed real quadratic field has only finitely many ideals whose canonical basis…
This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field K with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having…

We formulate a conjecture about the distribution of the canonical height of the lowest non-torsion rational point on a quadratic twist of a given elliptic curve, as the twist varies. This conjecture seems to be very deep and we can only prove partial results in this direction.
We study ideal lattices in $\mathbb{R}^2$ coming from real quadratic fields, and give an explicit method for computing all well-rounded twists of any such ideal lattice. We apply this to ideal lattices coming from Markoff numbers to construct infinite families of non-equivalent planar lattices with good sphere-packing radius and good minimum product distance. We also provide a complete classification of all real quadratic fields such that the orthogonal lattice is the only well-rounded twist of the lattice corresponding to the ring of integers.
14H52 : Elliptic curves Let E be the elliptic curve given by a Mordell equation y^2=x^3-A where A is an integer. For certain A, we use Stoll's formula to compute a lower bound for the proportion of square-free integers D up to X such that the Mordell-Weil rank of the quadratic twist by D is less than 2k, for given non-negative k. We also compute an upper bound for a certain average rank of quadratic twists of E.
The discretisation problem for even quadratic twists is almost understood, with the main question now being how the arithmetic Delaunay heuristic interacts with the analytic random matrix theory prediction. The situation for odd quadratic twists is much more mysterious, as the height of a point enters the picture, which does not necessarily take integral values (as does the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group). We discuss a couple of models and present data on this question.
Motivated by the theory of Diophantine $m$-tuples, we study rational points on quadratic twists $H^d:d y^2=(x^2+6x-18)(-x^2+2x+2)$, where $|d|$ is a prime. If we denote by $S(X)=\{ d \in \mathbb{Z}: H^d(\mathbb{Q})\ne \emptyset, |d| \textrm{ is a prime}\textrm{ and } |d| < X\},$ then, by assuming some standard conjectures about the ranks of elliptic curves in the family of quadratic twists, we prove that as $X \rightarrow \infty$ $$\frac{43}{256}+o(1)\le \frac{\#S(X)}{2π(X)}\le \frac{46}{256}+o(1).$$
Given two elliptic curves defined over a number field K, not both with j-invariant zero, we show that there are infinitely many $D\in K^\times$ with pairwise distinct image in $ K^\times/{K^\times}^2 $, such that the quadratic twist of both curves by D have positive Mordell-Weil rank. The proof depends on relating the values of pairs of cubic polynomials to rational points on another elliptic curve, and on a fiber product construction.
We give explicit examples of infinite families of elliptic curves E over Q with (nonconstant) quadratic twists over Q(t) of rank at least 2 and 3. We recover some results announced by Mestre, as well as some additional families. Suppose D is a squarefree integer and let r_E(D) denote the rank of the quadratic twist of E by D. We apply results of Stewart and Top to our examples to obtain results of the form #{D : |D| < x, r_E(D) >= 2} >> x^{1/3}, #{D : |D| < x, r_E(D) >= 3} >> x^{1/6} for all sufficiently large x.
Let C be a hyperelliptic curve of good reduction defined over a discrete valuation field K with algebraically closed residue field k. Assume moreover that char k \ne 2. Given d \in K^*\K^*2, we introduce an explicit description of the minimal regular model of the quadratic twist of C by d. As an application, we show that if C/Q is a nonsingular hyperelliptic curve given by y^2 = f(x) with f an irreducible polynomial, there exists a positive density family of prime quadratic twists of C which are not everywhere locally soluble.
We present the results of our search for the orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups for the quadratic twists of elliptic curves. We formulate a general conjecture, giving for a fixed elliptic curve $E$ over $\Bbb Q$ and positive integer $k$, an asymptotic formula for the number of quadratic twists $E_d$, $d$ positive square-free integers less than $X$, with finite group $E_d(\Bbb Q)$ and $|\Sha(E_d(\Bbb Q))| = k^2$. This paper continues the authors previous investigations concerning orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups in quadratic twists of the curve $X_0(49)$. In section 8 we exhibit $88$ examples o…
A weaker form of a 1979 conjecture of Goldfeld states that for every elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, a positive proportion of its quadratic twists $E^{(d)}$ have rank 1. Using tools from Galois cohomology, we give criteria on E and d which force a positive proportion of the quadratic twists of E to have 3-Selmer rank 1 and global root number -1. We then give four nonisomorphic infinite families of elliptic curves $E_{m, n}$ which satisfy these criteria. Conditional on the rank part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, this verifies the aforementioned conjecture for infinitely many ellip…
We prove quantitative upper bounds for the number of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve $E/\Fp_q(C)$ over a function field over a finite field that have rank $\geq 2$, and for their average rank. The main tools are constructions and results of Katz and uniform versions of the Chebotarev density theorem for varieties over finite fields. Moreover, we conditionally derive a bound in some cases where the degree of the conductor is unbounded.
For an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $F$, we prove that the average rank of the quadratic twists of $A$ is bounded, under the assumption that the multiplication-by-3 isogeny on $A$ factors as a composition of 3-isogenies over $F$. This is the first such boundedness result for an absolutely simple abelian variety $A$ of dimension greater than one. In fact, we exhibit such twist families in arbitrarily large dimension and over any number field. In dimension one, we deduce that if $E/F$ is an elliptic curve admitting a 3-isogeny, then the average rank of its quadratic twists is bounded.…
Given a pair of elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over the rational field $\mathbb Q$ whose $j$-invariants are not simultaneously 0 or 1728, Kuwata and Wang proved the existence of infinitely many square-free rationals $d$ such that the $d$-quadratic twists of $E_1$ and $E_2$ are both of positive rank. We construct infinite families of pairs of elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over $\mathbb Q$ such that for each pair there exist infinitely many square-free rationals $d$ for which the $d$-quadratic twists of $E_1$ and $E_2$ are both of rank at least 2.
In the present paper, we prove, for a large class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, the existence of an explicit infinite family of quadratic twists with analytic rank $0$. In addition, we establish the $2$-part of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for many of these infinite families of quadratic twists. Recently, Xin Wan has used our results to prove for the first time the full Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for some explicit infinite families of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication.
In this paper, we evaluate asymptotically the sum \[ \sum_{d \leq X} \left( \sum_{n \leq Y} μ(n)\leg {8d}{n} \right)^2, \] where $\leg {8d}{n}$ is the Kronecker symbol and $d$ runs over positive, odd, square-free integers.
Given an elliptic curve E over the rational with no rational 2-torsion points, we prove the existence of a quadratic twist of E for which the 2-Selmer rank is less than or equal to 1. By the author's earlier result, we establish a lower bound on the number of D's for which the twists E(D) have 2-Selmer rank <= 1. We include in the introduction our (brief) opinion about why it is supposed to be hard to push our technique to make the Selmer group trivial.
Let $K$ be a number field and $E/K$ be an elliptic curve with no $2$-torsion points. In the present article we give lower and upper bounds for the $2$-Selmer rank of $E$ in terms of the $2$-torsion of a narrow class group of a certain cubic extension of $K$ attached to $E$. As an application, we prove (under mild hypotheses) that a positive proportion of prime conductor quadratic twists of $E$ have the same $2$-Selmer group.
We observe that there are elliptic curves over number fields all of whose quadratic twists must have positive rank, assuming the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. We give a classification of such curves in terms of their local behaviour, and characterise them in terms of the Galois action on the Tate module. In particular, their existence shows that Goldfeld's conjecture does not extend directly to elliptic curves over number fields.
Let $E: y^2=x(x-a^2)(x+b^2)$ be an elliptic curve with full $2$-torsion group, where $a$ and $b$ are coprime integers and $2(a^2+b^2)$ is a square. Assume that the $2$-Selmer group of $E$ has rank two. We characterize all quadratic twists of $E$ with Mordell-Weil rank zero and $2$-primary Shafarevich-Tate groups $(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^2$, under certain conditions. We also obtain a distribution result of these elliptic curves.
Let f be a newform of weight two, prime level p. If D is a fundamental discriminant, define the twisted L-function L(f,D,s) to be the L-function associated to the twist of f by the quadratic character of conductor D. In this paper we consider the question of computing the family of twisted central values {L(f,D,1) : |D| <= x} for some x, by using an explicit version of Waldspurger's formula relating the central values L(f,D,1) to the |D|-th Fourier coefficient of weigth 3/2 modular forms in Shimura correspondence with f.
We give examples of Shimura correspondence for rational modular forms f of weight 2 and level p^2, for primes p<=19, computed as an application of a method we introduced in \cite{Pacetti-Tornaria}. Furthermore, we verify in this examples a conjectural formula for the central values L(f,-pd,1) and, in case p = 3 (mod 4), a formula for the central values L(f,d,1) corresponding to the real quadratic twists of f.
We establish a congruence formula between $p$-adic logarithms of Heegner points for two elliptic curves with the same mod $p$ Galois representation. As a first application, we use the congruence formula when $p=2$ to explicitly construct many quadratic twists of analytic rank zero (resp. one) for a wide class of elliptic curves $E$. We show that the number of twists of $E$ up to twisting discriminant $X$ of analytic rank zero (resp. one) is $\gg X/\log^{5/6}X$, improving the current best general bound towards Goldfeld's conjecture due to Ono--Skinner (resp. Perelli--Pomykala). We also prove th…
For any number field K with a complex place, we present an infinite family of elliptic curves defined over K such that $dim \mathbb{F}_2 Sel_2(E^F/K) \ge dim \mathbb{F}_2 E^F(K)[2] + r_2$ for every quadratic twist E^F of every curve E in this family, where r_2 is the number of complex places of K. This provides a counterexample to a conjecture appearing in work of Mazur and Rubin.
We study the parity of 2-Selmer ranks in the family of quadratic twists of a fixed principally polarised abelian variety over a number field. Specifically, we determine the proportion of twists having odd (resp. even) 2-Selmer rank. This generalises work of Klagsbrun--Mazur--Rubin for elliptic curves and Yu for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. Several differences in the statistics arise due to the possibility that the Shafarevich--Tate group (if finite) may have order twice a square. In particular, the statistics for parities of 2-Selmer ranks and 2-infinity Selmer ranks need no longer agree…
