Let $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ be the field of rational functions in one variable over a finite field. We introduce the notion of a totally $T$-adic function: one that is algebraic over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ and whose minimal polynomial splits completely over the completion $\mathbb{F}_q(\!(T)\!)$. We give two proofs that the height of a nonconstant totally $T$-adic function is bounded away from zero, each of which provides a sharp lower bound. We spend the majority of the paper providing explicit constructions of totally $T$-adic functions of small height (via arithmetic dynamics) and minimum height (via geometry and computer search). We also execute a large computer search that proves certain kinds of totally $T$-adic functions of minimum height over $\mathbb{F}_2(T)$ do not exist. The problem of whether there exist infinitely many totally $T$-adic functions of minimum positive height over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ remains open. Finally, we consider analogues of these notions under additional integrality hypotheses.
We interpolate cohomology classes attached to families of Hilbert modular forms. Using this we construct a two variable $p$-adic L-function which interpolates one variable $p$-adic L-functions.
We prove explicit formulas for the $p$-adic $L$-functions of totally real number fields and show how these formulas can be used to compute values and representations of $p$-adic $L$-functions.
We construct p-adic L-functions associated with triples of finite slope p-adic families of quaternionic automorphic eigenforms over totally real fields on Shimura curves. These results generalize a previous construction, joint work with D.Barrera, performed in the ordinary setting.
The height of an algebraic number $α$ is a measure of how arithmetically complicated $α$ is. We say $α$ is totally $p$-adic if the minimal polynomial of $α$ splits completely over the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers. In this paper, we investigate what can be said about the smallest nonzero height of a degree $3$ totally $p$-adic number. In particular, we provide an algorithm to determine, given a prime $p$, the smallest height of a degree $3$ totally $p$-adic number.
We construct $p$-adic measures which interpolate the special values of reciprocals of $p$-adic $L$-functions of totally real number fields $K$ at negative integers. These measures are defined by analyzing the non-constant term of partial Eisenstein series of the Hilbert modular group of $K$.
We refine and extend previous constructions of $p$-adic $L$-functions for Rankin-Selberg convolutions on $\GL(n)\times\GL(n-1)$ for regular algebraic representations over totally real fields. We also prove an intrinsic functional equation for this $p$-adic $L$-function, which will be of interest in further study of its arithmetic properties.
As a continuation of previous work, we establish sum expressions for $p$-adic Hecke $L$-functions of totally real fields in the sense of Delbourgo, assuming a totally real analog of Heegner hypothesis. This is done by finding explicit formulas of the periods of the corresponding $p$-adic measures. As an application, we extend the Ferrero-Greenberg formula of derivatives of $p$-adic $L$-functions to this setting.
Bombieri and Zannier established lower and upper bounds for the limit infimum of the Weil height in fields of totally p-adic numbers and generalizations thereof. In this paper, we use potential theoretic techniques to generalize the upper bounds from their paper and, under the assumption of integrality, to improve slightly upon their bounds.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We construct explicit uniformizers for the totally ramified extension $\mathbb{Q}_p(ζ_{p^2},\sqrt[p]{p})$ of the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}_p$, where $ζ_{p^2}$ is a primitive $p^2$-th root of unity.
We give a dynamical construction of an infinite sequence of distinct totally $p$-adic algebraic numbers whose Weil heights tend to the limit $\frac{\log p}{p-1}$, thus giving a new proof of a result of Bombieri-Zannier. The proof is essentially equivalent to the explicit calculation of the Arakelov-Zhang pairing of the maps $σ(x)=x^2$ and $ϕ_p(x)=\frac{1}{p}(x^p-x)$.
Bertolini-Darmon and Mok proved a formula of the second derivative of the two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function of a modular elliptic curve over a totally real field along the Hida family in terms of the image of a global point by some $p$-adic logarithm map. The theory of $p$-adic indefinite integrals and $p$-adic multiplicative integrals on $p$-adic upper half planes plays an important role in their work. In this paper, we generalize these integrals for $p$-adic measures which are not necessarily $\mathbf{Z}$-valued, and prove a formula of the second derivative of the two-variable $p$-adic $L$-…
Let F be a totally real number field. Using a recent geometric approach developed by Andreatta and Iovita we construct several variables p-adic families of finite slope quaternionic automorphic forms over F. It is achieved by interpolating the modular sheaves defined over some auxiliary unitary Shimura curves. Secondly, we attach p-adic L-functions to triples of ordinary p-adic families of quaternionic automorphic eigenforms. This is done by relating trilinear periods to some trilinear products over unitary Shimura curves which can be interpolated adapting the work of Liu-Zhang-Zhang to our fa…
In this paper, we prove a result on the $2$-adic logarithm of the fundamental unit of the field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[4]{-q}) $, where $q\equiv 3\bmod 4$ is a prime. When $q\equiv 15\bmod 16$, this result confirms a speculation of Coates-Li and has consequences for certain Iwasawa modules arising in their work.
We study the behavior of canonical height functions $\widehat{h}_f$, associated to rational maps $f$, on totally $p$-adic fields. In particular, we prove that there is a gap between zero and the next smallest value of $\widehat{h}_f$ on the maximal totally $p$-adic field if the map $f$ has at least one periodic point not contained in this field. As an application we prove that there is no infinite subset $X$ in the compositum of all number fields of degree at most $d$ such that $f(X)=X$ for some non-linear polynomial $f$. This answers a question of W. Narkiewicz from 1963.
We develop the topological polylogarithm which provides an integral version of Nori's Eisenstein cohomology classes for $GL_n(\mathbf{Z})$ and yields classes with values in an Iwasawa algebra. This implies directly the integrality properties of special values of $L$-functions of totally real fields and a construction of the associated $p$-adic $L$-function. Using a result of Graf, we also apply this to prove some integrality and $p$-adic interpolation results for the Eisenstein cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties.
The goal of this paper is to illustrate different approaches to understand Euler characteristics in the setting of totally real commutative and non-commutative Iwasawa theory. In addition to this, and in the spirit of Hesselholt and Mitchell, we show how these objects interact with homotopy theoretic invariants such as ($K(1)$-local) $K$-theory and Topological Cyclic homology.
We prove a unicity result for the $L$-functions appearing in the non-commutative Iwasawa main conjecture over totally real fields. We then consider continuous representations $ρ$ of the absolute Galois group of a totally real field $F$ on adic rings in the sense of Fukaya and Kato. Using our unicity result, we show that there exists a unique sensible definition of a non-commutative $L$-function for any such $ρ$ that factors through the Galois group of a possibly infinite totally real extension. We also consider the case of CM-extensions and discuss the relation with the equivariant main conjec…
Using the theory of $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules and the formalism of Selmer complexes we construct the p-adic height for p-adic representations with coefficients in an affinoid algebra over $Q_p$.
Bombieri and Zannier gave an effective construction of algebraic numbers of small height inside the maximal Galois extension of the rationals which is totally split at a given finite set of prime numbers. They proved, in particular, an explicit upper bound for the lim inf of the height of elements in such fields. We generalize their result in an effective way to maximal Galois extensions of number fields with given local behaviour at finitely many places.
If E is an elliptic curve defined over a number field and p is a prime of good ordinary reduction for E, a theorem of Rubin relates the p-adic height pairing on the p-power Selmer group of E to the first derivative of a cohomologically defined p-adic L-function attached to E. Bertolini and Darmon have defined a sequence of "derived" p-adic heights. In this paper we give an alternative definition of the p-adic height pairing and prove a generalization of Rubin's result, relating the derived heights to higher derivatives of p-adic L-functions. We also relate degeneracies in the derived heights t…
The main result of this text is a generalization of Perrin-Riou's p-adic Gross-Zagier formula to the case of Shimura curves over totally real fields. Let $F$ be a totally real field. Let $f$ be a Hilbert modular form over $F$ of parallel weight $2$, which is a new form and is ordinary at $p$. Let $E$ be a totally imaginary quadratic extension of $F$ of discriminant prime to $p$ and to the conductor of $f$. We may construct a $p$-adic $L$ function that interpolates special values of the complex $L$ functions associated to $f$, $E$ and finite order Hecke characters of $E$. The $p$-adic Gross-Zag…
In this paper we give the height measure of p-adic balls. In other words, given any x\in Q_p, we give the chance that a random rational number r satisfies |r-x|_p <= ε
The purpose of this article is to newly define the $p$-adic polylogarithm as an equivariant class in the cohomology of a certain infinite disjoint union of algebraic tori associated to a totally real field. We will then express the special values of $p$-adic $L$-functions interpolating nonpositive values of Hecke $L$-functions of the totally real field in terms of special values of these $p$-adic polylogarithms.
We analyse and drastically improve the running time of the algorithm of Mazur, Stein and Tate for computing the canonical cyclotomic p-adic height of a point on an elliptic curve E/Q, where E has good ordinary reduction at p >= 5.
We define an integral version of Sczech's Eisenstein cocycle on GLn by smoothing at a prime ell. As a result we obtain a new proof of the integrality of the values at nonpositive integers of the smoothed partial zeta functions associated to ray class extensions of totally real fields. We also obtain a new construction of the p-adic L-functions associated to these extensions. Our cohomological construction allows for a study of the leading term of these p-adic L-functions at s=0. We apply Spiess's formalism to prove that the order of vanishing at s=0 is at least equal to the expected one, as co…
- Let K be a totally imaginary number field. Denote by G ur K (2) the Galois group of the maximal unramified pro-2 extension of K. By comparing cup-products in {é}tale cohomology of SpecO K and cohomology of uniform pro-2 groups, we obtain situations where G ur K (2) has no non-trivial uniform analytic quotient, proving some new special cases of the unramified Fontaine-Mazur conjecture. For example, in the family of imaginary quadratic fields K for which the 2-rank of the class group is equal to 5, we obtain that for at least 33.12% of such K, the group G ur K (2) has no non-trivial uniform an…
C.J. Smyth was among the first to study the spectrum of the Weil height in the field of all totally real numbers, establishing both lower and upper bounds for the limit infimum of the height of all totally real integers and determining isolated values of the height. Later, Bombieri and Zannier established similar results for totally p-adic numbers and, inspired by work of Ullmo and Zhang, termed this the Bogomolov property. In this paper, we use results on equidistribution of points of low height to generalize both Bogomolov-type results to a wide variety of heights arising in arithmetic dynam…
We relate the $p$-adic heights of generalized Heegner cycles to the derivative of a $p$-adic $L$-function attached to a pair $(f, χ)$, where $f$ is an ordinary weight $2r$ newform and $χ$ is an unramified imaginary quadratic Hecke character of infinity type $(\ell,0)$, with $0 < \ell < 2r$. This generalizes the $p$-adic Gross-Zagier formula in the case $\ell = 0$ due to Perrin-Riou (in weight two) and Nekováur (in higher weight).
We analyze the elementary theory of certain fields of totally S-adic algebraic numbers that were introduced and studied by Geyer-Jarden and Haran-Jarden-Pop. In particular, we provide an axiomatization of these theories and prove their decidability, thereby giving a common generalization of classical decidability results of Jarden-Kiehne, Fried-Haran-Völklein and Ershov.
The purpose of this note is to give a short and elementary proof of the fact, that the absolute logarithmic Weil-height is bounded from below by a positive constant for all totally p-adic numbers which are neither zero nor a root of unity. The proof is based on an idea of C. Petsche and gives the best known lower bounds in this setting. These bounds differ from the truth by a term of less than $\log(3)/p$.
Let $B$ be a simple CM abelian variety over a CM field $E$, $p$ a rational prime. Suppose that $B$ has potentially ordinary reduction above $p$ and is self-dual with root number $-1$. Under some further conditions, we prove the generic non-vanishing of (cyclotomic) $p$-adic heights on $B$ along anticyclotomic $\Z_{p}$-extensions of $E$. This provides evidence towards Schneider's conjecture on the non-vanishing of $p$-adic heights. For CM elliptic curves over $\Q$, the result was previously known as a consequence of work of Bertrand, Gross--Zagier and Rohrlich in the 1980s. Our proof is based o…
The Shintani cocycle on $\GL_n(\Q)$, as constructed by Hill, gives a cohomological interpretation of special values of zeta functions for totally real fields of degree $n$. We give an explicit criterion for a specialization of the Shintani cocycle to be $p$-adically interpolable. As a corollary, we recover the results of Deligne-Ribet, Cassou Noguès and Barsky on the construction of $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to totally real fields.
C.J. Smyth and later Flammang studied the spectrum of the Weil height in the field of all totally real numbers, establishing both lower and upper bounds for the limit infimum of the height of all totally real integers and determining isolated values of the height. We remove the hypothesis that we consider only integers and establish an lower bound on the limit infimum of the height for all totally real numbers. Our proof relies on a quantitative equidistribution theorem for numbers of small height.
We continue with our study of the non-critical exceptional zeros of Katz' $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to a CM field $K$, following two threads. In the first thread, we redefine our (group-ring-valued) $\mathcal{L}$-invariant associated to each $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extension $K_Γ$ of $K$ in terms of $p$-adic height pairings and interpolate them as $K_Γ$ varies to a universal (multivariate) group-ring-valued $\mathcal{L}$-invariant. In the second thread, we use our results to study the exceptional zeros of the non-genuine Rankin--Selberg $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to the self-products of ne…
We give a new proof of Howard's $Λ$-adic Gross-Zagier formula, which we extend to the context of indefinite Shimura curves over $\mathbf{Q}$ attached to nonsplit quaternion algebras. This formula relates the cyclotomic derivative of a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function restricted to the anticyclotomic line to the cyclotomic $p$-adic heights of Heegner points over the anticyclotomic tower, and our proof, rather than inspired by the original approaches of Gross-Zagier and Perrin-Riou, is via Iwasawa theory, based on the connection between Heegner points, Beilinson-Flach elements, and their expli…
Let A be a modular elliptic curve over a totally real field F, and let E/F be a totally imaginary quadratic extension. In the event of exceptional zero phenomenon, we prove a formula for the derivative of the multivariable anticyclotomic p-adic L-function attached to (A,E), in terms of the Hasse-Weil L-function and certain p-adic periods attached to the respective automorphic forms. Our methods are based on a new construction of the anticyclotomic p-adic L-function by means of the corresponding automorphic representation.
We prove modularity of some two dimensional, 2-adic Galois representations over totally real fields that are nearly ordinary and that are residually dihedral. We do this by employing the strategy of Skinner and Wiles, using Hida families, together with the 2-adic patching method of Khare and Wintenberger. As an application we deduce modularity of some elliptic curves over totally real fields that have good ordinary or multiplicative reduction at places above 2.
Fix an odd prime $p$. Let $G$ be a compact $p$-adic Lie group containing a closed, normal, pro-$p$ subgroup $H$ which is abelian and such that $G/H$ is isomorphic to the additive group of $p$-adic integers $\mathbbZ_p$ . First we assume that $H$ is finite and compute the Whitehead group of the Iwasawa algebra, $Λ(G)$, of $G$. We also prove some results about certain localisation of $Λ(G)$ needed in Iwasawa theory. Let $F$ be a totally real number field and let $F_{\infty}$ be an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension of $F$ with Galois group $G$. The computation of the Whitehead groups are used to …
Let $K$ be a global field or $\overline{\mathbb Q}$, $F$ a nonzero quadratic form on $K^N$, $N \geq 2$, and $V$ a subspace of $K^N$. We prove the existence of an infinite collection of finite families of small-height maximal totally isotropic subspaces of $(V,F)$ such that each such family spans $V$ as a $K$-vector space. This result generalizes and extends a well known theorem of J. Vaaler and further contributes to the effective study of quadratic forms via height in the general spirit of Cassels' theorem on small zeros of quadratic forms. All bounds on height are explicit.
Let E be a quadratic extension of a totally real number field. We construct Stickelberger elements for Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight 2 in anticyclotomic extensions of E. Extending methods developed by Dasgupta and Spieß from the multiplicative group to an arbitrary one-dimensional torus we bound the order of vanishing of these Stickelberger elements from below and, in the analytic rank zero situation, we give a description of their leading terms via automorphic L-invariants. If the field E is totally imaginary, we use the p-adic uniformization of Shimura curves to show the equality …
Let $C$ be a genus $2$ hyperelliptic curve over a number field $K$, with a Weierstrass point $\infty$ at infinity, let $J$ be its Jacobian, let $Θ$ be the theta divisor with respect to $\infty$, and let $p$ be any prime number. We give an explicit construction of a $p$-adic height $h_p\colon J(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})\to \mathbb{Q}_p$ by means of $p$-adic analogues of Néron functions of divisor $2Θ$. We define such Néron functions using division polynomials and a generalisation of Blakestad's $p$-adic sigma function on the formal group of $J$. We prove that our $p$-adic Néron function $λ_v$ at a…
In this paper we prove a formula, much in the spirit of one due to Rubin, which expresses the leading coefficients of various p-adic L-functions in the presence of an exceptional zero in terms of Nekovar's p-adic height pairings on his extended Selmer groups. In a particular case, the Rubin-style formula we prove recovers a p-adic Kronecker limit formula. In a disjoint case, we observe that our computations with Nekovar's heights agree with the Ferrero- Greenberg formula (more generally, Gross' conjectural formula) for the leading coefficient of the Kubota-Leopoldt p-adic L-function (resp., th…
We prove that the p-adic height pairing of Nekovar, considered for algebraic curves, gives the p-adic height pairing of Coleman and Gross, defined using Coleman integration.

Let $f$ be a primitive Hilbert modular form of parallel weight $2$ and level $N$ for the totally real field $F$, and let $p$ be a rational prime coprime to $2N$. If $f$ is ordinary at $p$ and $E$ is a CM extension of $F$ of relative discriminant $Δ$ prime to $Np$, we give an explicit construction of the $p$-adic Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L_{p}(f_E,\cdot)$. When the sign of its functional equation is $-1$, we show, under the assumption that all primes $\wp\vert p$ are principal ideals of ${\mathcal O}_{F}$ which split in ${\mathcal O}_{E}$, that its central derivative is given by the $p$-adi…
We construct the p-adic zeta function for a one-dimensional (as a p-adic Lie extension) non-commutative p-extension of a totally real number field such that the finite part of its Galois group is a pgroup with exponent p. We first calculate the Whitehead groups of the Iwasawa algebra and its canonical Ore localisation by using Oliver-Taylor's theory upon integral logarithms. This calculation reduces the existence of the non-commutative p-adic zeta function to certain congruence conditions among abelian p-adic zeta pseudomeasures. Then we finally verify these congruences by using Deligne-Ribet'…
Siegel proved that every totally positive element of a number field K is the sum of four squares, so in particular the Pythagoras number is uniformly bounded across number fields. The p-adic Kochen operator provides a p-adic analogue of squaring, and a certain localisation of the ring generated by this operator consists of precisely the totally p-integral elements of K. We use this to formulate and prove a p-adic analogue of Siegel's theorem, by introducing the p-Pythagoras number of a general field, and showing that this number is uniformly bounded across number fields. We also generally stud…
In arXiv:1302.4423, Salez proved that every totally real algebraic integer is the eigenvalue of some tree. We define the "arboreal height" of a totally real algebraic integer $λ$ to be the minimal height of a rooted tree having $λ$ as an eigenvalue. In this paper, we prove several results about totally real algebraic integers of arboreal height $2$: We show that all real quadratic integers have arboreal height $\le 2$. We characterize the totally real cubic integers of arboreal height $2$. Finally, we prove that every totally irrational real number field is generated (as a ring over $\mathbb{Q…
We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.
Let $f$ be a continuous ring endomorphism of $\mathbf{Z}_p[[x]]/\mathbf{Z}_p$ of degree $p.$ We prove that if $f$ acts on the tangent space at $0$ by a uniformizer and commutes with an automorphism of infinite order, then it is necessarily an endomorphism of a formal group over $\mathbf{Z}_p.$ The proof relies on finding a stable embedding of $\mathbf{Z}_p[[x]]$ in Fontaine's crystalline period ring with the property that $f$ appears in the monoid of endomorphisms generated by the Galois group of $\mathbf{Q}_p$ and crystalline Frobenius. Our result verifies, over $\mathbf{Z}_p,$ the height one…
We describe an algorithm to compute the local component at p of the Coleman-Gross p-adic height pairing on divisors on hyperelliptic curves. As the height pairing is given in terms of a Coleman integral, we also provide new techniques to evaluate Coleman integrals of meromorphic differentials and present our algorithms as implemented in Sage.
