In a compact binary coalescence, the spins of the compact objects can have a significant effect on the orbital motion and gravitational-wave (GW) emission. For generic spin orientations, the orbital plane precesses, leading to characteristic modulations of the GW signal. The observation of precession effects is crucial to discriminate among different binary formation scenarios, and to carry out precise tests of General Relativity. Here, we work toward an improved description of spin effects in binary inspirals, within the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism, which is commonly used to build waveform models for LIGO and Virgo data analysis. We derive EOB Hamiltonians including the complete fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) conservative dynamics, which is the current state of the art. We place no restrictions on the spin orientations or magnitudes, or on the type of compact object (e.g., black hole or neutron star), and we produce the first generic-spin EOB Hamiltonians complete at 4PN order. We consider multiple spinning EOB Hamiltonians, which are more or less direct extensions of the varieties found in previous literature, and we suggest another simplified variant. Finally, we compare the circular-orbit, aligned-spin binding-energy functions derived from the EOB Hamiltonians to numerical-relativity simulations of the late inspiral. While finding that all proposed Hamiltonians perform reasonably well, we point out some interesting differences, which could guide the selection of a simpler, and thus faster-to-evolve EOB Hamiltonian to be used in future LIGO and Virgo inference studies.
We consider the Newtonian limit of the theory based on the Lagrangian L = R + \sum a_k R \Box^k R. The gravitational potential of a point mass turns out to be a combination of Newtonian and Yukawa terms. For sixth-order gravity the coefficients are calculated explicitly. For the general case one gets as a result: The the potential is always unbounded near the origin.
We derive the conservative part of the Lagrangian and the energy of a gravitationally bound two-body system at fourth post-Newtonian order, up to terms quadratic in the Newton constant. We also show that such terms are compatible with Lorentz invariance and we write an ansatz for the center-of-mass position. The remaining terms carrying higher powers of the Newton constant are currently under investigation.
The dynamics of compact binary systems at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity has been recently completed in a self-consistent way. In this paper, we compute the ten Poincaré constants of the motion and present the equations of motion in the frame of the center of mass (CM), together with the corresponding CM Lagrangian, conserved energy and conserved angular momentum. Next, we investigate the reduction of the CM dynamics to the case of quasi-circular orbits. The non local (in time) tail effect at the 4PN order is consistently included, as well as the relevant r…
We compute the (center-of-mass frame) scattering angle $χ$ of hyperboliclike encounters of two spinning black holes, at the fourth post-Newtonian approximation level for orbital effects, and at the next-to-next-to-leading order for spin-dependent effects. We find it convenient to compute the gauge-invariant scattering angle (expressed as a function of energy, orbital angular momentum and spins) by using the Effective-One-Body formalism. The contribution to scattering associated with nonlocal, tail effects is computed by generalizing to the case of unbound motions the method of time-localizatio…
In this work we complete the spin-dependent conservative dynamics of inspiralling compact binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian order, and in particular the derivation of the next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential. We derive the physical equations of motion of the position and the spin from a direct variation of the action. Further, we derive the quadratic-in-spin Hamiltonians, as well as their expressions in the center-of-mass frame. We construct the conserved integrals of motion, which form the Poincaré algebra. This construction provided a consistency check for the…
An approximation to General Relativity is presented that agrees with the Einstein field equations up to and including the fourth post-Newtonian (PN) order. This approximation is formulated in a fully constrained scheme: all involved equations are explicitly elliptic except the wave equation that describes the two independent degrees of freedom of the gravitational field. The formalism covers naturally the conformal-flat-condition (CFC) approach by Isenberg, Wilson, and Mathews and the improved second PN-order exact approach CFC+. For stationary configurations, like Kerr black holes, agreement …

The Fokker action of point-particle binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity has been determined previously. However two ambiguity parameters associated with infra-red (IR) divergencies of spatial integrals had to be introduced. These two parameters were fixed by comparison with gravitational self-force (GSF) calculations of the conserved energy and periastron advance for circular orbits in the test-mass limit. In the present paper together with a companion paper, we determine both these ambiguities from first principle, by means of dimensional regulariza…
As a crucial step towards the completion of the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) gravitational-wave generation from compact binary systems, we obtain the expressions of the so-called "canonical" multipole moments of the source in terms of the "source" and "gauge" moments. The canonical moments describe the propagation of gravitational waves outside the source's near zone, while the source and gauge moments encode explicit information about the matter source. Those two descriptions, in terms of two sets of canonical moments or in terms of six sets of source and gauge moments, are isometric. We thus …
We present the first complete (i.e., ambiguity-free) derivation of the equations of motion of two non-spinning compact objects up to the 4PN order, based on the Fokker action of point particles in harmonic coordinates. The last ambiguity parameter is determined from first principle, by resorting to a matching between the near zone and far zone fields, and a consistent computation of the 4PN tail effect in d dimensions. Dimensional regularization is used throughout for treating IR divergences appearing at 4PN order, as well as UV divergences due to the model of point particles describing compac…
The regularization and renormalization of the radiative mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is investigated at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. As clear from the conservative 4PN equations of motion, a dimensional regularization has to be implemented in order to properly treat the non-linear interactions experienced by gravitational waves during their propagation toward future null infinity. By implementing such procedure, we show that the poles coming from the source moment (computed in a companion paper) are exactly…
The mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is computed at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The multipole moments are defined by matching between the field in the exterior zone of the matter system and the PN field in the near zone, following the multipolar-post-Minkowskian (MPM)-PN formalism. The matching implies a specific regularization for handling infra-red (IR) divergences of the multipole moments at infinity, based on the Hadamard finite part procedure. On the other hand, the calculation entails ultra-violet (UV) d…
We review our recent derivation of a Fokker action describing the conservative dynamics of a compact binary system at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The two bodies are modeled by point particles, which induces ultraviolet (UV) divergences that are cured by means of dimensional regularization combined with a renormalization of the particle's wordlines. Associated with the propagation of wave tails at infinity is the appearance of a non-local-in-time conservative tail effect at the 4PN order in the Lagrangian. In turn this implies the appearance of infrared …
The conservative dynamics of gravitationally interacting two-point-mass systems has been recently determined at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation [T.Damour, P.Jaranowski, and G.Schäfer, Phys. Rev. D 89, 064058 (2014)], and found to be nonlocal in time. We show how to transcribe this dynamics within the effective one-body (EOB) formalism. To achieve this EOB transcription, we develop a new strategy involving the (infinite-)order-reduction of a nonlocal dynamics to an ordinary action-angle Hamiltonian. Our final, equivalent EOB dynamics comprises two (local) radial potentials, $A(r)$…
The Fokker action governing the motion of compact binary systems without spins is derived in harmonic coordinates at the fourth post-Newtonian approximation (4PN) of general relativity. Dimensional regularization is used for treating the local ultraviolet (UV) divergences associated with point particles, followed by a renormalization of the poles into a redefinition of the trajectories of the point masses. Effects at the 4PN order associated with wave tails propagating at infinity are included consistently at the level of the action. A finite part procedure based on analytic continuation deals…
We determine the full post-Newtonian limit of theories of gravity that extend general relativity by replacing the Ricci scalar, R, in the generating Lagrangian by some analytic function, f(R). We restrict ourselves to theories that admit Minkowski space as a suitable background, and perform a perturbative expansion in the manner prescribed by the parameterised post-Newtonian formalism. Extra potentials are found to be present that are not accounted for in the usual treatment, and a discussion is provided on how they may be used to observationally distinguished these theories from general relat…
A fourth order generalized f(R) gravity theory (FOG) is considered with the Einstein-Hilbert action $R+aR^{2}+bR_{μν}R^{μν},$ $R_{μν}$ being Ricci\'{}s tensor and R the curvature scalar. The field equations are applied to spherical bodies where Newtonian gravity is a good approximation. The result is that for $0\leq a\sim -b<<R^{2}$, $R$ being the body radius, the gravitational field outside the body contains two Yukawas, one attractive and the other one repulsive, in addition to the Newtonian term. For $a\sim -b>>R^{2}$ the gravitational field near the body is zero but at distances greater th…
Within the framework of the effective field theory approach to the post-Newtonian approximation to General Relativity, we report the so far missing G^3 and G^4 sectors of the conservative two body dynamics at fourth perturbative order for non-spinning compact objects. Following the standard procedure, the exchange of gravitational interaction is integrated out to obtain a systematic expansion in terms of Feynman graphs. Building on this result and on previously obtained ones, we are able to write the local-in-time regularized Lagrangian at fourth post-Newtonian order, which is in agreement wit…
In this paper, we revisit and complete our preceding work on the Fokker Lagrangian describing the dynamics of compact binary systems at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) order in harmonic coordinates. We clarify the impact of the non-local character of the Fokker Lagrangian or the associated Hamiltonian on both the conserved energy and the relativistic periastron precession for circular orbits. We show that the non-locality of the action, due to the presence of the tail effect at the 4PN order, gives rise to an extra contribution to the conserved integral of energy with respect to the Hamiltonia…
In a previous paper we derived a post-Newtonian approximation to cosmology which, in contrast to former Newtonian and post-Newtonian cosmological theories, has a well-posed initial value problem. In this paper, this new post-Newtonian theory is compared with the fully general relativistic theory, in the context of the k = 0 Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmologies. It is found that the post-Newtonian theory reproduces the results of its general relativistic counterpart, whilst the Newtonian theory does not.
We calculate the motion of binary mass systems in gravity up to the fourth post--Newtonian order. We use momentum expansions within an effective field theory approach based on Feynman amplitudes in harmonic coordinates by applying dimensional regularization. We construct the canonical transformations to ADM coordinates and to effective one body theory (EOB) to compare with other approaches. We show that intermediate poles in the dimensional regularization parameter $\varepsilon$ vanish in the observables and the classical theory is not renormalized. The results are illustrated for a series of …
With the aim of providing high accuracy post-Newtonian (PN) templates for the analysis of gravitational waves generated by compact binary systems, we complete the analytical derivation of the source type mass quadrupole moment of compact binaries (without spins) at the fourth PN order of general relativity. Similarly to the case of the conservative 4PN equations of motion, we show that the quadrupole moment at that order contains a non-local (in time) contribution, arising from the tail-transported interaction entering the conservative part of the dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate the infr…
Coherent or exact equations of motion for a post-Newtonian Lagrangian formalism are the Euler-Lagrange equations without any terms truncated. They naturally conserve energy {and} angular momentum. Doubling the phase-space variables of positions and momenta in the coherent equations, we establish extended phase-space symplectic-like integrators with the midpoint permutations. The velocities should be solved iteratively from the algebraic equations of the momenta defined by the Lagrangian during the course of numerical integrations. It is shown numerically that a fourth-order extended phase-spac…
With the post-Newtonian approxination, the energy of Schwarzschild spacetime in the Weinberg prescription is obtained. The energy for the first post-Newtonian approximation $E^{(1)} = m$ gives the Newtonian treatment of Schwarzschild spacetime. However, for the second post-Newtonian approximation, the erergy is shown that $E^{(1)}$ adds extra terms $E^{(2)}$ which consist of the energy stored in the configuration $E_{\rm config}$, in the gravitational field $E_{\rm field}$. and a term of surface integral. These extra terms gives post-Newtonian corrections to the Newtonian treatment.
The linear- and quadratic-in-spin contributions to the binding potential and gravitational-wave flux from binary systems are derived to next-to-next-to-leading order in the Post-Newtonian (PN) expansion of general relativity, including finite-size and tail effects. The calculation is carried out through the worldline effective field theory framework. We find agreement in the overlap with the available PN literature and test-body limit. As a direct application, we complete the knowledge of spin effects in the evolution of the orbital phase for aligned-spin circular orbits to fourth PN order. We…
The post-Newtonian hydrodynamic equations for a non-perfect fluid are developed within the framework of a post-Newtonian Boltzmann equation. The post-Newtonian components of the energy-momentum tensor are determined by considering the relativistic Eckart decomposition for a viscous and heat conducting fluid. From the relativistic Grad distribution function its post-Newtonian expression is derived. The hydrodynamic equations for the mass density, mass-energy density and momentum density are determined from a post-Newtonian transfer equation and Grad's distribution function. In the non-relativis…
The post-Newtonian Jeans equation for stationary self-gravitating systems is derived from the post-Newtonian Boltzmann equation in spherical coordinates. The Jeans equation is coupled with the three Poisson equations from the post-Newtonian theory. The Poisson equations are functions of the energy-momentum tensor components which are determined from the post-Newtonian Maxwell--Jüttner distribution function. As an application, the effect of a central massive black hole on the velocity dispersion profile of the host galaxy is investigated and the influence of the post-Newtonian corrections are d…
We discuss Newtonian and the post-Newtonian limits of Fourth Order Gravity Theories pointing out, in details, their resemblances and differences with respect to General Relativity. Particular emphasis is placed on the exact solutions and methods used to obtain them.
Jeans instability within the framework of post-Newtonian Boltzmann and Poisson equations are analyzed. The components of the energy-momentum tensor are calculated from a post-Newtonian Maxwell-Jüttner distribution function. The perturbations of the distribution function and gravitational potentials from their background states with the representation of the perturbations as plane waves lead to a dispersion relation with post-Newtonian corrections. The influence of the post-Newtonian approximation on the Jeans mass is determined and it was shown that the mass necessary for an overdensity to beg…
We estimate virial masses of galaxy clusters using the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) virial theorem. Also, we show explicitly that post-Newtonian corrections can not address the mass discrepancy in the galaxy clusters.
Working within the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation to General Relativity, we use the effective field theory (EFT) framework to study the conservative dynamics of the two-body motion at fourth PN order, at fifth order in the Newton constant. This is one of the missing pieces preventing the computation of the full Lagrangian at fourth PN order using EFT methods. We exploit the analogy between diagrams in the EFT gravitational theory and 2-point functions in massless gauge theory, to address the calculation of 4-loop amplitudes by means of standard multi-loop diagrammatic techniques. For those …
Post-Newtonian expansions of the Brill-Lindquist and Misner-Lindquist solutions of the time-symmetric two-black-hole initial value problem are derived. The static Hamiltonians related to the expanded solutions, after identifying the bare masses in both solutions, are found to differ from each other at the third post-Newtonian approximation. By shifting the position variables of the black holes the post-Newtonian expansions of the three metrics can be made to coincide up to the fifth post-Newtonian order resulting in identical static Hamiltonians up the third post-Newtonian approximation. The c…
We present an elementary derivation of the planetary advance of the perihelion for a general spherically symmetric line element in the post- newtonian approximation.
The second post-Newtonian hydrodynamic equations are analyzed within the framework of a plane wave solution. The hydrodynamic equations for the mass and momentum density are coupled with six Poisson equations for the Newtonian and post-Newtonian gravitational potentials. Perturbations of the basic fields and gravitational potentials from a background state by assuming plane wave representations lead to a dispersion relation where the Jeans instability condition emerges. The influence of the first and second post-Newtonian approximations on the Jeans mass is determined. It was shown that the re…

We discuss various aspects of the post-Newtonian approximation in general relativity. After presenting the foundation based on the Newtonian limit, we use the (3+1) formalism to formulate the post-Newtonian approximation for the perfect fluid. As an application we show the method for constructing the equilibrium configuration of nonaxisymmetric uniformly rotating fluid. We also discuss the gravitational waves including tail from post-Newtonian systems.
It is shown that the recently found non-uniqueness of the third post-Newtonian binary point-mass ADM-Hamiltonian is related to the non-uniqueness at the third post-Newtonian approximation of the applied ADM-coordinate conditions.
In this paper we explore how far the post-Newtonian theory goes in overcoming the difficulties associated with anisotropic homogeneous cosmologies in the Newtonian approximation. It will be shown that, unlike in the Newtonian case, the cosmological equations of the post-Newtonian approximation are much more in the spirit of general relativity with regard to the nine Bianchi types and issues of singularities. The situations of vanishing rotation and vanishing shear are treated separately. The homogeneous Bianchi I model is considered as an example of a rotation-free cosmology with anisotropy. I…
We study a solution of the field equations for dilatonic gravity and obtain its post-post-newtonian limit. It turns out that terms to this and higher orders in the expansion may become important in strong gravitational fields, even though the post-newtonian limit coincides with that of General Relativity. This suggests that strong gravitational fields can only be studied by exact solutions of the field equations.
In 2002, Poujade and Blanchet succeeded in matching the post-Newtonian solution to the Einstein field equation to the post-Minkowskian field up to any arbitrary order as well as reproducing, in a different way, the results of the 1998 paper by Blanchet in which he showed how to match the post-Minkowskian series to the post-Newtonian expansion. Comparing these two papers, it might be asked whether it is possible to match the post-Newtonian field to the post-Minkowskian one by means of a method similar to the one used in the 1998 paper. The answer is affirmative, and in the present paper we prov…
The set up of matched filters for the detection of gravitational waves from in-spiraling compact binaries is usually carried out using the restricted post-Newtonian approximation: the filter phase is modelled including post-Newtonian corrections, whereas the amplitude is retained at the Newtonian order. Here we investigate the effects of the introduction of post-Newtonian corrections also to the amplitude and we discuss some of the implications for signal detection and parameter estimation.
We derive the equations of motion for binary systems of compact bodies in the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation to general relativity. Results are given through 2PN order (order (v/c)^4 beyond Newtonian theory), and for gravitational radiation reaction effects at 2.5PN and 3.5PN orders. The method is based on a framework for direct integration of the relaxed Einstein equations (DIRE) developed earlier, in which the equations of motion through 3.5PN order can be expressed in terms of Poisson-like potentials that are generalizations of the instantaneous Newtonian gravitational potential, and in …
The Newtonian limit of the most general fourth order gravity is performed with metric approach in the Jordan frame with no gauge condition. The most general theory with fourth order differential equations is obtained by generalizing the $f(R)$ term in the action with a generic function containing other two curvature invariants: \emph{Ricci square} ($R_{αβ}R^{αβ}$) and \emph{Riemann square} ($R_{αβγδ}R^{αβγδ}$). The spherically symmetric solutions of metric tensor yet present Yukawa-like spatial behavior, but now one has two characteristic lengths. At Newtonian order any function of curvature i…
Using post-Newtonian equations of motion for fluid bodies valid to the second post-Newtonian order, we derive the equations of motion for binary systems with finite-sized, non-spinning but arbitrarily shaped bodies. In particular we study the contributions of the internal structure of the bodies (such as self-gravity) that would diverge if the size of the bodies were to shrink to zero. Using a set of virial relations accurate to the first post-Newtonian order that reflect the stationarity of each body, and redefining the masses to include 1PN and 2PN self-gravity terms, we demonstrate the comp…
In this paper, second post-Newtonian approximation of Einstein-aether theory is obtained by Chandrasekhar's approach. Five parameterized post-Newtonian parameters in first post-Newtonian approximation are presented after a time transformation and they are identical with previous works, in which $γ=1$, $β=1$ and two preferred-frame parameters remain. Meanwhile, in second post-Newtonian approximation, a parameter, which represents third order nonlinearity for gravity, is zero the same as in general relativity. For an application for future deep space laser ranging missions, we reduce the metric …
The increasing sophistication and accuracy of numerical simulations of compact binaries (especially binary black holes) presents the opportunity to test the regime in which post-Newtonian (PN) predictions for the emitted gravitational waves are accurate. In order to confront numerical results with those of post-Newtonian theory, it is convenient to compare multipolar decompositions of the two waveforms. It is pointed out here that the individual modes can be computed to higher post-Newtonian order by examining the radiative multipole moments of the system, rather than by decomposing the 2.5PN …
The post-Newtonian approximation is useful to discuss gravitational waveforms for binary inspirals. In this note, for retrograde circular orbits in the equatorial plane, we discuss the region of validity of the post-Newtonian approximation by using the gravitational energy flux derived numerically and analytically in the black hole perturbation approach. It is found that the edge of the allowable region behaves quite intricately, including prograde orbits even if we treat higher post-Newtonian orders.
We investigated hydrodynamical post-Newtonian models of selfgravitating stationary black-hole-disk systems. The post-Newtonian scheme presented here and also in our recent paper is a continuation of previous, purely Newtonian studies of selfgravitating hydrodynamical disks rotating according to the Keplerian rotation law. The post-Newtonian relativistic corrections are significant even at the 1PN level. The 1PN correction to the angular velocity can be of the order of 10% of its Newtonian value. It can be expressed as a combination of geometric and hydrodynamical terms. Moreover, in contrast t…
Two long-standing problems with the post-Newtonian approximation for isolated slowly-moving systems in general relativity are: (i) the appearance at high post-Newtonian orders of divergent Poisson integrals, casting a doubt on the soundness of the post-Newtonian series; (ii) the domain of validity of the approximation which is limited to the near-zone of the source, and prevents one, a priori, from incorporating the condition of no-incoming radiation, to be imposed at past null infinity. In this article, we resolve the problem (i) by iterating the post-Newtonian hierarchy of equations by means…
We construct a set of post-Newtonian reference frames for a comprehensive study of the orbital dynamics and rotational motion of the Moon and Earth by means of lunar laser ranging (LLR) with the precision of one millimeter. We also derive the post-Newtonian coordinate transformations between the frames and analyze the residual gauge freedom, which is used for removing spurious post-Newtonian effects from the equations of motion of the solar system bodies.
Recently, a strong debate has been pursued about the Newtonian limit (i.e. small velocity and weak field) of fourth order gravity models. According to some authors, the Newtonian limit of $f(R)$-gravity is equivalent to the one of Brans-Dicke gravity with $ω_{BD} = 0$, so that the PPN parameters of these models turn out to be ill defined. In this paper, we carefully discuss this point considering that fourth order gravity models are dynamically equivalent to the O'Hanlon Lagrangian. This is a special case of scalar-tensor gravity characterized only by self-interaction potential and that, in th…
Newtonian Cosmology is commonly used in astrophysical problems, because of its obvious simplicity when compared with general relativity. However it has inherent difficulties, the most obvious of which is the non-existence of a well-posed initial value problem. In this paper we investigate how far these problems are met by using the post-Newtonian approximation in cosmology.
We study the Jeans gravitational instability for a mixture of baryonic and dark matter particles, in the post-Newtonian approximation. We adopt a kinetic model consisting of a coupled system of post-Newtonian collisionless Boltzmann equations, for each species, coupled to the post-Newtonian Poisson equations. We derive the stability criterion, accounting for both post-Newtonian corrections and the presence of dark matter. It is shown that both effects give rise to smaller Jeans masses, in comparison with the standard Jeans criterion, meaning that a smaller mass is needed to begin the gravitati…
