Recently, a strong debate has been pursued about the Newtonian limit (i.e. small velocity and weak field) of fourth order gravity models. According to some authors, the Newtonian limit of $f(R)$-gravity is equivalent to the one of Brans-Dicke gravity with $ω_{BD} = 0$, so that the PPN parameters of these models turn out to be ill defined. In this paper, we carefully discuss this point considering that fourth order gravity models are dynamically equivalent to the O'Hanlon Lagrangian. This is a special case of scalar-tensor gravity characterized only by self-interaction potential and that, in the Newtonian limit, this implies a non-standard behavior that cannot be compared with the usual PPN limit of General Relativity.
The result turns out to be completely different from the one of Brans-Dicke theory and in particular suggests that it is misleading to consider the PPN parameters of this theory with $ω_{BD} = 0$ in order to characterize the homologous quantities of $f(R)$-gravity. Finally the solutions at Newtonian level, obtained in the Jordan frame for a $f(R)$-gravity, reinterpreted as a scalar-tensor theory, are linked to those in the Einstein frame.
It is well-known that the conformal structure of a relativistic spacetime is of profound physical and conceptual interest. In this note, we consider the analogous structure for Newtonian theories. We show that the Newtonian Weyl tensor is an invariant of this structure.
In the present paper we take a step towards the generalization of the post-Newtonian formalism to tensor-multi-scalar theories. These are theories where we have more than one scalar field being mediators of the gravitational interaction in addition to the spacetime metric. They are very natural extensions of Einstein's gravity allowing for the existence of new classes of compact objects and offering interesting phenomenology reaching far beyond the single scalar field theories. We calculate the expansion up to 2.5 post-Newtonian order in the near zone using the so-called direct integration of …
Applying the recently developed dynamical perturbation formalism on cosmological background to scalar-tensor theory, we provide a solid theoretical basis and a rigorous justification for phenomenological models of orbital dynamics that are currently used to interpret experimental measurements of the time-dependent gravitational constant. We derive the field equations for the scalar-tensor perturbations and study their gauge freedom associated with the cosmological expansion. We find a new gauge eliminating a prohibitive number of gauge modes in the field equations and significantly simplifying…
Scalar-tensor theories are one of the most natural and well-constrained alternative theories of gravity, while still allowing for significant deviations from general relativity. We present the equations of motion of nonspinning compact binary systems at the third post-Newtonian (PN) order in massless scalar-tensor theories. We adapt the Fokker action of point particles in harmonic coordinates in general relativity to the specificities of scalar-tensor theories. We use dimensional regularisation to treat both the infrared and ultraviolet divergences, and we consistently include the tail effects…
In this contribution, we consider the equivalence between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories to study the evolution of scalar cosmological perturbations in the $1 + 3$ covariant formalism for the classes of shear-free cosmological dust models with irrotational fluid flows. The $f(R)$ gravity is considered to be a subclass of Brans-Dicke models, we gave an overview on the equivalence between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories. We use the $1 + 3$ covariant formalism to present the covariant linearised evolution and constraint equations. We then derive the integrability conditions d…
In this contribution, classes of shear-free cosmological dust models with irrotational fluid flows will be investigated in the context of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. In particular, the integrability conditions describing a consistent evolution of the linearised field equations of quasi-Newtonian universes are presented. We also derive the covariant density and velocity propagation equations of such models and analyse the corresponding solutions to these perturbation equations.
With continuous advances in technology, future satellite gradiometry missions will be capable of performing precision relativistic experiments and imposing constraints on modern gravity theories. To this end, the full first-order post-Newtonian tidal tensor under inertially guided and Earth-pointing local frames along post-Newtonian orbits is worked out. The physical picture behind the "Mashhoon-Theiss anomaly" is explained at the post-Newtonian level. The relativistic precession of the local frame with respect to the sidereal frame will produce modulations of Newtonian tidal forces along cert…

We present an extension to the gauge-invariant formulation of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, which allows its application to symmetric teleparallel gravity theories. In its original formulation, the gauge-invariant PPN formalism makes use of a gauge-invariant perturbative expansion of tensor fields; however, one of the fundamental gravitational field variables in symmetric teleparallel gravity theories is a flat, torsion-free connection, hence not a tensor field. Since connections transform differently from tensor fields under diffeomorphisms, we introduce here an adapted no…
The gravitomagnetic tidal Love number of a slowly rotating body was calculated previously under the assumption that the velocity perturbation created by the tidal field consists of an induction piece proportional to the vector potential, and a rotational piece that scales with $Ω$, the body's angular velocity. The second part of this assumption is wrong: the rotational piece of the velocity perturbation scales in fact like $Ω^0 = 1$. The previous calculations are therefore incorrect, and the purpose of this paper is to repair the mistake. To keep the technical difficulties to a minimum, the tr…
Non-equilibrium and equilibrium thermodynamics of an interacting component in a special-relativistic multi-component system is discussed by use of an entropy identity. The special case of the corresponding free component is considered. Equilibrium conditions and especially the multi-component Killing relation of the 4-temperature are discussed. Two axioms characterize the mixture: additivity of the energy momentum tensors and of the 4-entropies of the components generating those of the mixture. The resulting quantities of a component and of the mixture, energy, energy flux, momentum flux, stre…
The problem of determining the post-Newtonian parameter $γ$ in massive scalar-tensor theories is considered. We demonstrate equivalent correspondence between the post-Newtonian parameter $γ$ and the parameter appearing in the equation of null geodysic in massive scalar-tensor theories. We show that massive scalar-tensor theories can be distinguished from general relativity based on the predictions of Shapiro time delay. All calculations are presented using hybrid metric-Palatini f(R)-gravity as an example. The expression for Shapiro time delay in hybrid f(R)-gravity is obtained for the first t…
In the standard approach to studying cosmological structure formation, the overall expansion of the Universe is assumed to be homogeneous, with the gravitational effect of inhomogeneities encoded entirely in a Newtonian potential. A topic of ongoing debate is to what degree this fully captures the dynamics dictated by general relativity, especially in the era of precision cosmology. To quantitatively assess this, we directly compare standard N-body Newtonian calculations to full numerical solutions of the Einstein equations, for cold matter with various magnitude initial inhomogeneities on sca…
We present a package for the computer algebra system Mathematica, which implements the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. This package, named xPPN, is built upon the widely used tensor algebra package suite xAct, and in particular the package xTensor therein. The main feature of xPPN is to provide functions to perform a proper $3+1$ decomposition of tensors, as well as a perturbative expansion in so-called velocity orders, which are central tasks in the PPN formalism. Further, xPPN implements various rules for quantities appearing in the PPN formalism, which aid in perturbatively sol…
Asymptotic frame selection for binary black hole spacetimes II: Post-Newtonian limit
In 2002, Poujade and Blanchet succeeded in matching the post-Newtonian solution to the Einstein field equation to the post-Minkowskian field up to any arbitrary order as well as reproducing, in a different way, the results of the 1998 paper by Blanchet in which he showed how to match the post-Minkowskian series to the post-Newtonian expansion. Comparing these two papers, it might be asked whether it is possible to match the post-Newtonian field to the post-Minkowskian one by means of a method similar to the one used in the 1998 paper. The answer is affirmative, and in the present paper we prov…
We review the fundamentals and highlight the differences between some commonly used definitions for the PPN gamma parameter ($γ$) and the gravitational slip ($η$). Here we stress the usefulness of a gamma-like parameter used by Berry and Gair ($γ_{\scriptscriptstyle Σ}$) that parametrizes the bending of light and the Shapiro time delay in situations in which the standard $γ$ cannot be promptly used. First we apply our considerations to two well known cases, but for which some conflicting results can be found: massive Brans-Dicke gravity and $f(R)$ gravity (both the metric and the Palatini vers…
Using the latest most accurate values of post-Newtonian parameters $γ$ and $β$ obtained by MESSENGER we impose restrictions on the recently proposed hybrid f(R)-gravity model in its scalar-tensor representation. We show that the presence of a light scalar field in this theory does not contradict the experimental data based not only on the $ γ$ parameter (as was shown earlier), but also on all other PPN parameters. The application of parameterized post-Newtonian formalism to gravitational theories with massive fields is also discussed.
Exploiting simple yet remarkable properties of relativistic gravitational scattering, we use first-order self-force (linear-in-mass-ratio) results to obtain arbitrary-mass-ratio results for the complete third-subleading post-Newtonian (4.5PN) corrections to the spin-orbit sector of spinning-binary conservative dynamics, for generic (bound or unbound) orbits and spin orientations. We thereby improve important ingredients of models of gravitational waves from spinning binaries, and we demonstrate the improvement in accuracy by comparing against aligned-spin numerical simulations of binary black …
