The gravitomagnetic tidal Love number of a slowly rotating body was calculated previously under the assumption that the velocity perturbation created by the tidal field consists of an induction piece proportional to the vector potential, and a rotational piece that scales with $Ω$, the body's angular velocity. The second part of this assumption is wrong: the rotational piece of the velocity perturbation scales in fact like $Ω^0 = 1$. The previous calculations are therefore incorrect, and the purpose of this paper is to repair the mistake. To keep the technical difficulties to a minimum, the treatment here is restricted to a post-Newtonian expansion carried out to leading order -- previous calculations of the gravitomagnetic Love number were performed in full general relativity. On the other hand, the computation presented here is not restricted to a stationary tidal field. I show that the correct scaling of the velocity perturbation with $Ω$ leads to the promotion of the Love number to a Love tensor $k_{jk}^{\ \ pq}$, a four-index object that relates the body's current quadrupole moment $S_{jk}$ to the gravitomagnetic tidal moment ${\cal B}_{pq}$. The tensorial nature of this quantity has to do with the fact that each $e^{imϕ}$ piece of the tidal force gives rise to an $m$-specific velocity perturbation, and therefore to a Love number that depends on $m$. The collection of these $m$-specific Love numbers makes up the Love tensor $k_{jk}^{\ \ pq}$.
The deformation of a nonrotating body resulting from the application of a tidal field is measured by two sets of Love numbers associated with the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic pieces of the tidal field, respectively. The gravitomagnetic Love numbers were previously computed for fluid bodies, under the assumption that the fluid is in a strict hydrostatic equilibrium that requires the complete absence of internal motions. A more realistic configuration, however, is an irrotational state that establishes, in the course of time, internal motions driven by the gravitomagnetic interaction. We …
In this short note, we investigate the existence of universal relations between the gravimagnetic Love number of irrotational stars and the dimensionless moment of inertia. These Love numbers take into account the internal motion of the fluid, while the star is globally irrotational. The goal is to extend the so-called I-Love-Q relations - providing a strong correlation between the gravitoelectric Love number, the dimensionless moment of inertia and the dimensionless rotation-induced quadrupole - to the gravitomagnetic sector, where internal motion is taken into account. As a byproduct, we pre…
General relativity predicts that two freely counter-revolving test particles in the exterior field of a central rotating mass take different periods of time to complete the same full orbit; this time difference leads to the gravitomagnetic clock effect. The effect has been derived for circular equatorial orbits; moreover, it has been extended via azimuthal closure to spherical orbits around a slowly rotating mass. In this work, a general formula is derived for the main gravitomagnetic clock effect in the case of slow motion along an arbitrary {\it elliptical} orbit in the exterior field of a s…
We study Maxwell equations in the external background spacetime of a slowly rotating magnetized NUT star and find analytical solutions for the exterior electric fields after separating the equations of electric field into angular and radial parts in the lowest order approximation. The star is considered isolated and in vacuum, with dipolar magnetic field aligned with the axis of rotation. The contribution to the external electric field of star from the NUT charge is considered in detail.
Moment of inertia ($I$), rotational~(tidal) Love number ($λ^{\rm (rot)}$) and quadrupole moment ($Q$) of slowly rotating massive neutron star~(NS) with holographic multiquark~(MQ) core are computed in comparison to pure MQ star. The Chiral Effective Theory~(CET) stiff equation of state~(EoS) is used in the crust of the neutron star. The dimensionless multipole moments $\bar{I},\barλ^{\rm (rot)}, \bar{Q}$ are found to be independent of the rotation parameters and determined completely by the zeroth-order star profile. Universal ``I-Love-Q'' relations found by Yagi and Yunes [1,2] are mostly pre…
The metric outside a compact body deformed by a quadrupolar tidal field is universal up to its Love numbers, constants which encode the tidal response's dependence on the body's internal structure. For a non-rotating body, the deformed external geometry is characterized by the familiar gravitational Love numbers $K_2^{\text{el}}$ and $K_2^{\text{mag}}$. For a slowly rotating body, these must be supplemented by rotational-tidal Love numbers, which measure the response to couplings between the body's spin and the external tidal field. By integrating the interior field equations, I find that the …
Gravitational waves emitted by coalescing binary systems containing neutron stars (or other compact objects) carry signatures of the stars' internal equation of state, notably, through the influence of tidal deformations during the binary's inspiral stage. While the leading-order tidal effects for post-Newtonian binaries of compact bodies in general relativity are due to the bodies' mass-quadrupole moments induced by gravitoelectric tidal fields, we consider here the leading effects due to current-quadrupole moments induced by gravitomagnetic tidal fields. We employ an effective action approac…
In this paper, we study slowly rotating black hole solutions in Lovelock gravity (n=3). These exact slowly rotating black hole solutions are obtained in uncharged and charged cases, respectively. Up to the linear order of the rotating parameter a, the mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the uncharged black holes get no corrections from rotation. In charged case, we compute magnetic dipole moment and gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes. It is shown that the gyromagnetic ratio keeps invariant after introducing the Gauss-Bonnet and third order Lovelock interactions.
We study magnetospheric structure surrounding rotating magnetized neutron star with nonvanishing NUT (Newman-Tamburino-Unti) parameter. For the simplicity of calculations Goldreich-Julian charge density is analyzed for the aligned neutron star with zero inclination between magnetic field, gravitomagnetic field and rotation axis. From the system of Maxwell equations in spacetime of slowly rotating NUT star, second-order differential equation for electrostatic potential is derived. Analytical solution of this equation indicates the general relativistic modification of an accelerating electric fi…
Gravitomagnetic quasi-normal modes of neutron stars are resonantly excited by tidal effects during a binary inspiral, leading to a potentially measurable effect in the gravitational-wave signal. We take an important step towards incorporating these effects in waveform models by developing a relativistic effective action for the gravitomagnetic dynamics that clarifies a number of subtleties. Working in the slow-rotation limit, we first consider the post-Newtonian approximation and explicitly derive the effective action from the equations of motion. We demonstrate that this formulation opens a w…
Numerical simulations of binary neutron stars by Wilson, Mathews, and Marronetti indicated that neutron stars that are stable in isolation can be made to collapse to black holes when placed in a binary. This claim was surprising as it ran counter to the Newtonian expectation that a neutron star in a binary should be more stable, not less. After correcting an error found by Flanagan, Wilson and Mathews found that the compression of the neutron stars was significantly reduced but not eliminated. This has motivated us to ask the following general question: Under what circumstances can general-rel…
Observations of gravitational waves from inspiralling neutron star binaries---such as GW170817---can be used to constrain the nuclear equation of state by placing bounds on stellar tidal deformability. For slowly rotating neutron stars, the response to a weak quadrupolar tidal field is characterized by four internal-structure-dependent constants called "Love numbers." The tidal Love numbers $k_2^\text{el}$ and $k_2^\text{mag}$ measure the tides raised by the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic components of the applied field, and the rotational-tidal Love numbers $\mathfrak{f}^\text{o}$ and $\…
We construct the external metric of a slowly rotating, tidally deformed material body in general relativity. The tidal forces acting on the body are assumed to be weak and to vary slowly with time, and the metric is obtained as a perturbation of a background metric that describes the external geometry of an isolated, slowly rotating body. The tidal environment is generic and characterized by two symmetric-tracefree tidal moments E_{ab} and B_{ab}, and the body is characterized by its mass M, its radius R, and a dimensionless angular-momentum vector χ^a << 1. The perturbation accounts for all c…
We study the gravitational time delay in ray propagation due to rotating masses in the linear approximation of general relativity. Simple expressions are given for the gravitomagnetic time delay that occurs when rays of radiation cross a slowly rotating shell and propagate in the field of a distant rotating source. Moreover, we calculate the local gravitational time delay in the Goedel universe. The observational consequences of these results in the case of weak gravitational lensing are discussed.
Gravitational waves (GWs) from binary neutron stars (NSs) have opened unique opportunities to constrain the nuclear equation of state by measuring tidal effects associated with the excitation of characteristic modes of the NSs. This includes gravitomagnetic modes associated with the Coriolis effect, whose frequencies are proportional to the NS's spin frequency, and for which the spin orientation determines the subclass of modes that are predominantly excited. We advance the GW models for these effects that are needed for data analysis by first developing a description for the adiabatic signatu…
Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is an alternative theory to general relativity which breaks Lorentz invariance in order to achieve an ultraviolet complete and power-counting renormalizable theory of gravity. In the low energy limit, Hořava-Lifshitz gravity coincides with a vector-tensor theory known as khronometric gravity. The deviation of khronometric gravity from general relativity can be parametrized by three coupling constants: $α$, $β$, and $λ$. Solar system experiments and gravitational wave observations impose stringent bounds on $α$ and $β$, while $λ$ is still relatively unconstrained ($λ\les…
We construct models of slowly rotating, perfect-fluid neutron stars by extending the classical Hartle-Thorne formalism to generic scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Working at second order in the dimensionless angular momentum, we compute the mass M, radius R, scalar charge q, moment of inertia I and spin-induced quadrupole moment Q, as well as the tidal and rotational Love numbers. Our formalism applies to generic scalar-tensor theories, but we focus in particular on theories that allow for spontaneous scalarization. It was recently discovered that the moment of inertia, quadrupole moment and…
By extending our recent framework to describe the tidal deformations of a spinning compact object, we compute for the first time the tidal Love numbers of a spinning neutron star to linear order in the angular momentum. The spin of the object introduces couplings between electric and magnetic distortions and new classes of spin-induced ("rotational") tidal Love numbers emerge. We focus on stationary tidal fields, which induce axisymmetric perturbations. We present the perturbation equations for both electric-led and magnetic-led rotational Love numbers for generic multipoles and explicitly sol…
Local conformal symmetry introduces the conformal curvature (Weyl tensor) that gets split into its (gravito-) electric and magnetic (tensor) parts. Newtonian tidal forces are expected from the gravitoelectric field, whereas general-relativistic frame-dragging effects emerge from the gravitomagnetic field. The symmetric, traceless gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic tensor fields can be visualized by their eigenvectors and eigenvalues. In this essay, we depict the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic fields around a slowly rotating black hole. This suggests that the phenomenon of ultra-fast outf…
The well known general relativistic Lense-Thirring drag of the orbit of a test particle in the stationary field of a central slowly rotating body is generated, in the weak-field and slow-motion approximation of General Relativity, by a gravitomagnetic Lorentz-like acceleration in the equations of motion of the test particle. In it the gravitomagnetic field is due to the central body's angular momentum supposed to be constant. In the context of the gravitational analogue of the Larmor theorem, such acceleration looks like a Coriolis inertial term in an accelerated frame. In this paper the effec…
The exact solution for the electromagnetic field occuring when the Kerr-Taub-NUT compact object is immersed (i) in an originally uniform magnetic field aligned along the axis of axial symmetry (ii) in dipolar magnetic field generated by current loop has been investigated. Effective potential of motion of charged test particle around Kerr-Taub-NUT gravitational source immersed in magnetic field with different values of external magnetic field and NUT parameter has been also investigated. In both cases presence of NUT parameter and magnetic field shifts stable circular orbits in the direction of…
The role of dense-matter properties in the tidal deformability of a cold nonaccreted neutron star is further investigated. Using the set of Brussels-Montreal unified equations of state, we have computed the gravitoelectric Love numbers $k_\ell$ and the gravitomagnetic Love numbers $j_\ell$ up to $\ell=5$. Their relative importance and their sensitivity to the symmetry energy and the neutron-matter stiffness are numerically assessed. Their impact on the phase of the gravitational-wave signal emitted by binary neutron star inspirals is also discussed.
Chern-Simons (CS) modified gravity is an extension to general relativity (GR) in which the metric is coupled to a scalar field, resulting in modified Einstein field equations. In the dynamical theory, the scalar field is itself sourced by the Pontryagin density of the space-time. In this paper, the coupled system of equations for the metric and the scalar field is solved numerically for slowly-rotating neutron stars described with realistic equations of state and for slowly-rotating black holes. An analytic solution for a constant-density nonrelativistic object is also presented. It is shown t…
We demonstrate that a slowly rotating compact body subjected to a stationary tidal field undergoes a dynamical response, in which the fluid variables and the interior metric vary on the time scale of the rotation period. This dynamical response requires the tidal field to have a gravitomagnetic component generated by external mass currents; the response to a gravitoelectric tidal field is stationary. We confirm that in a calculation carried out to first order in the body's rotation, the exterior geometry bears no trace of this internal dynamics; it remains stationary in spite of the time-depen…
General relativistic quantum interference effects in the slowly rotating NUT space-time as the Sagnac effect and the phase shift effect of interfering particle in neutron interferometer are considered. It was found that in the case of the Sagnac effect the influence of NUT parameter is becoming important due to the fact that the angular velocity of the locally non rotating observer must be larger than one in the Kerr space-time. In the case of neutron interferometry it is found that due to the presence of NUT-parameter an additional term in the phase shift of interfering particle emerges. This…
Rossby modes (r-modes) of rotating neutron stars can be excited by the gravitomagnetic forces in coalescing binary systems. The previous study by Flanagan and Racine [Phys. Rev. D 75, 044001 (2007)] showed that this kind of dynamical tide (DT) can induce phase shifts of 0.1 rad on gravitational waveforms, which is detectable by third-generation (3G) detectors. In this paper, we study the impact of this DT on measuring neutron-star parameters in the era of 3G detectors. We incorporate two universal relations among neutron star properties predicted by different equations of state: (i) the well-k…
While cubic Quasi-topological gravity is unique, there is a family of quartic Quasi-topological gravities in five dimensions. These theories are defined by leading to a first order equation on spherically symmetric spacetimes, resembling the structure of the equations of Lovelock theories in higher-dimensions, and are also ghost free around AdS. Here we construct slowly rotating black holes in these theories, and show that the equations for the off-diagonal components of the metric in the cubic theory are automatically of second order, while imposing this as a restriction on the quartic theori…
It was shown recently, that normalized relations between the moment of inertia (I), the quadrupole moment (Q) and the tidal deformability (Love number) exist and for slowly-rotating neutron stars they are almost independent of the equation of state (EOS). We extend the computation of the I-Q relation to models rotating up to the mass-shedding limit and show that the universality of the relations is lost. With increasing rotation rate, the normalized I-Q relation departs significantly from its slow-rotation limit deviating up to 40% for neutron stars and up to 75% for strange stars. The deviati…
This paper presents a new metric and studies slowly rotating Gauss-Bonnet black holes with one nonvanishing angular momentum in five dimensional anti-de Sitter spaces. Taking the angular momentum parameter $a$ up to second order, the slowly rotating black hole solutions are obtained by working directly in the action. In addition, it also finds that this method is applicable in higher order Lovelock gravity.
The open question of whether a Kerr black hole can become tidally deformed or not has profound implications for fundamental physics and gravitational-wave astronomy. We consider a Kerr black hole embedded in a weak and slowly varying, but otherwise arbitrary, multipolar tidal environment. By solving the static Teukolsky equation for the gauge-invariant Weyl scalar $ψ_0$, and by reconstructing the corresponding metric perturbation in an ingoing radiation gauge, for a general harmonic index $\ell$, we compute the linear response of a Kerr black hole to the tidal field. This linear response vanis…
Recently super-Chandrasekhar mass limit has been derived theoretically in presence of strong magnetic field to complement experimental observations. In the framework of Newtonian physics, we have studied the equilibrium configurations of such magnetized white dwarfs by using the relativistic Thomas-Fermi equation of state for magnetized white-dwarfs. Hartle formalism, for slowly rotating stars, has been employed to obtain the equations of equilibrium. Various physical quantities of uniformly rotating and non-rotating white dwarfs have been calculated within this formalism. Consequently, the un…

The multipole moments and the tidal Love numbers of neutron stars and quark stars satisfy certain relations which are almost insensitive to the star's internal structure. A natural question is whether the same relations hold for different compact objects and how they possibly approach the black-hole limit. Here we consider "gravastars", which are hypothetical compact objects sustained by their internal vacuum energy. Such solutions have been proposed as exotic alternatives to the black-hole paradigm because they can be as compact as black holes and exist in any mass range. By constructing slow…
In general relativity, relativistic gravity gradiometry involves the measurement of the relativistic tidal matrix, which is theoretically obtained from the projection of the Riemann curvature tensor onto the orthonormal tetrad frame of an observer. The observer's 4-velocity vector defines its local temporal axis and its local spatial frame is defined by a set of three orthonormal nonrotating gyro directions. The general tidal matrix for the timelike geodesics of Kerr spacetime has been calculated by Marck\cite{Marck}. We are interested in the measured components of the curvature tensor along t…
Recently it was shown that slowly rotating neutron stars exhibit an interesting correlation between their moment of inertia $I$, their quadrupole moment $Q$, and their tidal deformation Love number $λ$ (the I-Love-Q relations), independently of the equation of state of the compact object. In the present work a similar, more general, universality is shown to hold true for all rotating neutron stars within General Relativity; the first four multipole moments of the neutron star are related in a way independent of the nuclear matter equation of state we assume. By exploiting this relation, we can…
The tidal Love numbers of a black hole vanish, and this is often taken to imply that the hole's tidally induced multipole moments vanish also. An obstacle to establishing a link between these statements is that the multipole moments of individual bodies are not defined in general relativity, when the bodies are subjected to a mutual gravitational interaction. In a previous publication [Phys. Rev. D 103, 064023 (2021)] I promoted the view that individual multipole moments can be defined when the mutual interaction is sufficiently weak to be described by a post-Newtonian expansion. In this view,…
The deformability of a compact object induced by a perturbing tidal field is encoded in the tidal Love numbers, which depend sensibly on the object's internal structure. These numbers are known only for static, spherically-symmetric objects. As a first step to compute the tidal Love numbers of a spinning compact star, here we extend powerful perturbative techniques to compute the exterior geometry of a spinning object distorted by an axisymmetric tidal field to second order in the angular momentum. The spin of the object introduces couplings between electric and magnetic deformations and new c…
We develop a new perturbation method for determining a class of time transfer functions in a stationary spacetime when its metric is a small deformation of a background metric for which the time transfer functions are known in a closed form. The perturbation terms are expressed as line integrals along the null geodesic paths of the background metric. Unlike what happens with the other procedures proposed until now, the time transfer functions obtained in this way are completely free of unbounded terms and do not generate any enhancement in the light travel time. Our procedure proves to be very…
We construct rapidly rotating neutron star models in scalar-tensor theories with a massive scalar field. The fact that the scalar field has nonzero mass leads to very interesting results since the allowed range of values of the coupling parameters is significantly broadened. These deviations from pure general relativity can be very large for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. The rapid rotation can magnify the differences several times compared to the static case. The universal relations between the normalized moment of inertia and quadrupole moment are also …
The general relativistic Lense-Thirring effect can be measured by inspecting a suitable combination of the orbital residuals of the nodes of LAGEOS and LAGEOS II and the perigee of LAGEOS II. The solid and ocean Earth tides affect the recovery of the parameter by means of which the gravitomagnetic force is accounted for in the combined residuals. Thus an extensive analysis of the perturbations induced on these orbital elements by the solid and ocean Earth tides is carried out. It involves the l=2 terms for the solid tides and the l=2,3,4 terms for the ocean tides. The perigee of LAGEOS II turn…
