In this contribution, we consider the equivalence between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories to study the evolution of scalar cosmological perturbations in the $1 + 3$ covariant formalism for the classes of shear-free cosmological dust models with irrotational fluid flows. The $f(R)$ gravity is considered to be a subclass of Brans-Dicke models, we gave an overview on the equivalence between $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories. We use the $1 + 3$ covariant formalism to present the covariant linearised evolution and constraint equations. We then derive the integrability conditions describing a consistent evolution of the linearised field equations of quasi-Newtonian universes in the scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Finally, we derive the evolution equations for the density and velocity perturbations of the quasi-Newtonian universe. We apply the harmonic decomposition and we explore the behaviour of the matter density contrast by considering $R^{n}$ models. We introduce the so-called quasi-static approximation to study the approximated solutions on small scales. The growth of the matter density contrast for both short- and long- wavelength modes has been examined by applying certain assumptions of the initial conditions.
Description of our cosmological spacetime as a perturbed conformal Newtonian metric and implications for the backreaction proposal for the accelerating universe
In this paper, we study the effects of super-light brane world perturbative modes on structure formation in our universe. As these modes modify the large distance behavior of Newtonian potential, they effect the clustering of a system of galaxies. So, we explicitly calculate the clustering of galaxies interacting through such a modified Newtonian potential. We use a suitable approximation for analyzing this system of galaxies, and discuss the validity of such approximations. We observe that such corrections also modify the virial theorem for such a system of galaxies.
Integrability conditions arising from general irrotational fluid-flow considerations of a universe dominated by cosmic dark fluids will be investigated under special assumptions on the nature of the spacetime shear. Special emphasis will be placed on linearized perturbations of quasi-Newtonian and anti-Newtonian spacetimes, whereby the conditions for the existence and consistent evolution of such spacetimes in the presence of the Chaplygin gas fluid model will be derived and discussed.
We study the bootstrapped Newtonian potential generated by a localised source in one and two spatial dimensions, and show that both cases naturally lead to finite spatial extensions of the outer vacuum. We speculate that this implies the necessary existence of a cosmological (particle) horizon associated with compact sources. In view of the possible dimensional reduction occurring in ultra-high energy processes - like scatterings at Planckian energies, the gravitational collapse of compact objects or the end-point of black hole evaporation - one can consider such lower-dimensional "bubbles" im…
We have found some analytical cosmological solutions to MOdified Gravity (MOG). These solutions describe different evolutionary epochs of an isotropic and homogeneous universe. During each epoch, the evolution of cosmological perturbation is studied in the Newtonian framework and compared with the corresponding results of GR.
We investigate classes of shear-free cosmological dust models with irrotational fluid flows within the framework of $f(T)$ gravity. In particular, we use the $1 + 3$ covariant formalism and present the covariant linearised evolution and constraint equations describing such models. We then derive the integrability conditions describing a consistent evolution of the linearised field equations of these quasi-Newtonian universes in the $f(T)$ gravitational theory. Finally, we derive the evolution equations for the density and velocity perturbations of the quasi-Newtonian universe. We explore the b…
We consider a test of the Copernican Principle through observations of the large-scale structures, and for this purpose we study the self-gravitating system in a relativistic huge void universe model which does not invoke the Copernican Principle. If we focus on the the weakly self-gravitating and slowly evolving system whose spatial extent is much smaller than the scale of the cosmological horizon in the homogeneous and isotropic background universe model, the cosmological Newtonian approximation is available. Also in the huge void universe model, the same kind of approximation as the cosmolo…
In this contribution, classes of shear-free cosmological dust models with irrotational fluid flows will be investigated in the context of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. In particular, the integrability conditions describing a consistent evolution of the linearised field equations of quasi-Newtonian universes are presented. We also derive the covariant density and velocity propagation equations of such models and analyse the corresponding solutions to these perturbation equations.
Although bulk peculiar motions are commonplace in the universe, most theoretical studies either bypass them, or take the viewpoint of the idealised Hubble-flow observers. As a result, the role of these peculiar flows remains largely unaccounted for, despite the fact that relative-motion effects have led to the misinterpretation of the observations in a number of occasions. Here, we examine the implications of large-scale peculiar flows for the interpretation of the deceleration parameter. We compare, in particular, the deceleration parameters measured by the Hubble-flow observers and by their …
We obtain the wave functions associated to the quantum Newtonian universe with a cosmological constant which is described by the Schrödinger equation and discuss some aspects of its dynamics for all forms of energy density, namely, matter, radiation, vacuum, dark energy, and quintessence. These wave functions of the quantum Newtonian universe are obtained in terms of the Heun's functions and the respective energy levels are shown. We use these solutions to investigate the expansion of the universe and found that the asymptotic behavior for the scale factor is $R \sim \mbox{e}^{t}$ for whatever…
We present a simple quantum-mechanical estimate of the cosmological constant of a Newtonian Universe. We first mimic the dynamics of a Newtonian spacetime by means of a nonrelativistic quantum mechanics for the matter contents of the Universe (baryonic and dark) within a fixed (i.e., nondynamical) Euclidean spacetime. Then we identify an operator that plays, on the matter states, a role analogous to that played by the cosmological constant. Finally we prove that there exists a quantum state for the matter fields, in which the above mentioned operator has an expectation value equal to the cosmo…
Emission of anisotropic gravitational radiation from compact binary system leads to a flux of linear momentum. This results in the recoil of the system. We investigate the rate of loss of Linear momentum flux in the far zone of the source using various mass type and current type multipole moments for inspiralling compact binary mergers in quasi-elliptical orbits at 2.5 Post Newtonian order. We compute the linear momentum flux accurate up to $\mathcal{O}(e_t)$ in harmonic coordinate. A 2.5 Post Newtonian Quasi-Keplarian representation of the parametric solution to the Post Newtonian equation of…
A correspondence between the Equivalence principle and the homogeneity of the universe is discussed. In Newtonian gravity, translation of co-moving coordinates in a uniformly expanding universe defines an accelerated frame. A consistency condition for the invariance of this transformation which requires a well defined transformation for the Newtonian potential, yields the Friedmann equations. All these symmetries are lost when we modify NSL (Newton's Second Law) or the Poisson equation. For example by replacing NSL with non-linear function of the acceleration the concept of relative accelerati…
In the Newtonian limit of general relativity force acting on a test mass in a central gravitational field is conventionally defined by the attractive Newtonian gravity (inverse square) term plus a small repulsive cosmological force, which is proportional to the slow acceleration of the universe expansion. In this paper we consider the cosmological force correction due to fast quantum oscillations of the universe scale factor, which were suggested recently by Wang et al. (Phys. Rev. D 95, 103504 (2017)) as a potential solution of the cosmological constant problem. These fast fluctuations of the…
We construct a framework to probe the effect of non-linear structure formation on the large-scale expansion of the universe. We take a bottom-up approach to cosmological modelling by splitting our universe into cells. The matter content within each cell is described by the post-Newtonian formalism. We assume that most of the cell is in the vicinity of weak gravitational fields, so that it can be described using a perturbed Minkowski metric. Our cells are patched together using the Israel junction conditions. We impose reflection symmetry across the boundary of these cells. This allows us to ca…
The third post-Newtonian gravitational wave polarisations and associated spherical harmonic modes for inspiralling compact binaries in quasi-circular orbits
Due to the nonlinearity of the Euler{Poisson equations, it is possible that the nonlinear Jeans instability may lead to a faster density growing rate than the rate in the standard theory of linearized Jeans instability, which motivates us to study the nonlinear Jeans instability. The aim of this article is to develop a method proving the Jeans instability for slightly nonlinear Euler-Poisson equations in the expanding Newtonian universe. The standard proofs of the Jeans instability rely on the Fourier analysis. However, it is difficult to generalize Fourier method to a nonlinear setting, and t…
We investigate the integrability conditions of a class of shear-free perfect-fluid cosmological models within the framework of anisotropic fluid sources, applying our results to f(R) dark energy models. Generalising earlier general relativistic results for time-like geodesics, we extend the potential and acceleration terms of the quasi-Newtonian formulation of integrable dust cosmological models about a linearized Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background and derive the equations that describe their dynamical evolutions. We show that in general, models with an anisotropic fluid source are…
We compute the instantaneous contributions to the spherical harmonic modes of gravitational waveforms from compact binary systems in general orbits up to the third post-Newtonian order. We further extend these results for compact binaries in quasi-elliptical orbits using the 3PN quasi-Keplerian representation of the conserved dynamics of compact binaries in eccentric orbits. Using the multipolar post-Minkowskian formalism, starting from the different mass and current type multipole moments, we compute the spin weighted spherical harmonic decomposition of the instantaneous part of the gravitati…
A number of codes for general-relativistic simulations of cosmological structure formation have been developed in recent years. Here we demonstrate that a sample of these codes produce consistent results beyond the Newtonian regime. We simulate solutions to Einstein's equations dominated by gravitomagnetism -- a vector-type gravitational field that doesn't exist in Newtonian gravity and produces frame-dragging, the leading-order post-Newtonian effect. We calculate the coordinate-invariant effect on intersecting null geodesics by performing ray tracing in each independent code. With this observ…
In this paper, we adopt the Verlinde hypothesis on the origin of gravity as the consequence of the tendency of systems to increase their entropy, and employ the Tsallis statistics. Thereinafter, modifications to the Newtonian second law of motion, its gravity and radial velocity profile are studied. In addition and in a classical framework, the corresponding cosmology and also its ability in describing the inflationary phases are investigated.
We complete the computation of the gravitational waveform amplitude for non-spinning compact binaries to the third and a half post-Newtonian (PN) order in the quasi-circular case. This is done by performing a spin-weighted spherical harmonics decomposition of the amplitude. This computation is achieved using the post-Newtonian-Multipolar-post-Minkowskian formalism. The amplitude modes are written in a PN expanded way as well as a factorized form suitable for EOB template building. Combining this work with previous ones, we provide in the supplemental materials the expressions of the modes incl…
Despite all fundamental objections against Newtonian concepts in cosmology, the Friedmann equation derives from these in an astoundingly simple way through application of the shell theorem and conservation of Newtonian energy in an infinite universe. However, Friedmann universes in general posses a finite gravitational horizon, as a result of which the application of the shell theorem fails and the Newtonian derivation collapses. We show that in the presence of a gravitational horizon the Friedmann equation can be derived from a Machian definition of kinetic energy, without invoking the shell …
