We calculate the motion of binary mass systems in gravity up to the fourth post--Newtonian order. We use momentum expansions within an effective field theory approach based on Feynman amplitudes in harmonic coordinates by applying dimensional regularization. We construct the canonical transformations to ADM coordinates and to effective one body theory (EOB) to compare with other approaches. We show that intermediate poles in the dimensional regularization parameter $\varepsilon$ vanish in the observables and the classical theory is not renormalized. The results are illustrated for a series of observables for which we agree with the literature.
Within the framework of the effective field theory approach to the post-Newtonian approximation to General Relativity, we report the so far missing G^3 and G^4 sectors of the conservative two body dynamics at fourth perturbative order for non-spinning compact objects. Following the standard procedure, the exchange of gravitational interaction is integrated out to obtain a systematic expansion in terms of Feynman graphs. Building on this result and on previously obtained ones, we are able to write the local-in-time regularized Lagrangian at fourth post-Newtonian order, which is in agreement wit…
We consider the Newtonian limit of the theory based on the Lagrangian L = R + \sum a_k R \Box^k R. The gravitational potential of a point mass turns out to be a combination of Newtonian and Yukawa terms. For sixth-order gravity the coefficients are calculated explicitly. For the general case one gets as a result: The the potential is always unbounded near the origin.
The linear- and quadratic-in-spin contributions to the binding potential and gravitational-wave flux from binary systems are derived to next-to-next-to-leading order in the Post-Newtonian (PN) expansion of general relativity, including finite-size and tail effects. The calculation is carried out through the worldline effective field theory framework. We find agreement in the overlap with the available PN literature and test-body limit. As a direct application, we complete the knowledge of spin effects in the evolution of the orbital phase for aligned-spin circular orbits to fourth PN order. We…
We derive the conservative part of the Lagrangian and the energy of a gravitationally bound two-body system at fourth post-Newtonian order, up to terms quadratic in the Newton constant. We also show that such terms are compatible with Lorentz invariance and we write an ansatz for the center-of-mass position. The remaining terms carrying higher powers of the Newton constant are currently under investigation.
We discuss Newtonian and the post-Newtonian limits of Fourth Order Gravity Theories pointing out, in details, their resemblances and differences with respect to General Relativity. Particular emphasis is placed on the exact solutions and methods used to obtain them.
Working within the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation to General Relativity, we use the effective field theory (EFT) framework to study the conservative dynamics of the two-body motion at fourth PN order, at fifth order in the Newton constant. This is one of the missing pieces preventing the computation of the full Lagrangian at fourth PN order using EFT methods. We exploit the analogy between diagrams in the EFT gravitational theory and 2-point functions in massless gauge theory, to address the calculation of 4-loop amplitudes by means of standard multi-loop diagrammatic techniques. For those …
We complete the analytical determination, at the 4th post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation, of the conservative dynamics of gravitationally interacting two-point-mass systems. This completion is obtained by resolving the infra-red ambiguity which had blocked a previous 4PN calculation [P.Jaranowski and G.Schäfer, Phys. Rev. D 87, 081503(R) (2013)] by taking into account the 4PN breakdown of the usual near-zone expansion due to infinite-range tail-transported temporal correlations found long ago [L.Blanchet and T.Damour, Phys. Rev. D 37, 1410 (1988)]. This leads to a Poincaré-invariant 4PN-accurat…
We determine the full post-Newtonian limit of theories of gravity that extend general relativity by replacing the Ricci scalar, R, in the generating Lagrangian by some analytic function, f(R). We restrict ourselves to theories that admit Minkowski space as a suitable background, and perform a perturbative expansion in the manner prescribed by the parameterised post-Newtonian formalism. Extra potentials are found to be present that are not accounted for in the usual treatment, and a discussion is provided on how they may be used to observationally distinguished these theories from general relat…
The fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) two-body dynamics has been recently tackled by several different approaches: effective field theory, Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian, action-angle-Delaunay averaging, effective-one-body, gravitational self-force, first law of dynamics, and Fokker action. We review the achievements of these approaches and discuss the complementarity of their results. Our main conclusions are: (i) the results of the first complete derivation of the 4PN dynamics [T.Damour, P.Jaranowski, and G.Schäfer, Phys. Rev. D 89, 064058 (2014)] have been, piecewise, fully confirmed by severa…
The dynamics of compact binary systems at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity has been recently completed in a self-consistent way. In this paper, we compute the ten Poincaré constants of the motion and present the equations of motion in the frame of the center of mass (CM), together with the corresponding CM Lagrangian, conserved energy and conserved angular momentum. Next, we investigate the reduction of the CM dynamics to the case of quasi-circular orbits. The non local (in time) tail effect at the 4PN order is consistently included, as well as the relevant r…
We compute the (center-of-mass frame) scattering angle $χ$ of hyperboliclike encounters of two spinning black holes, at the fourth post-Newtonian approximation level for orbital effects, and at the next-to-next-to-leading order for spin-dependent effects. We find it convenient to compute the gauge-invariant scattering angle (expressed as a function of energy, orbital angular momentum and spins) by using the Effective-One-Body formalism. The contribution to scattering associated with nonlocal, tail effects is computed by generalizing to the case of unbound motions the method of time-localizatio…
In this work we complete the spin-dependent conservative dynamics of inspiralling compact binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian order, and in particular the derivation of the next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential. We derive the physical equations of motion of the position and the spin from a direct variation of the action. Further, we derive the quadratic-in-spin Hamiltonians, as well as their expressions in the center-of-mass frame. We construct the conserved integrals of motion, which form the Poincaré algebra. This construction provided a consistency check for the…
An approximation to General Relativity is presented that agrees with the Einstein field equations up to and including the fourth post-Newtonian (PN) order. This approximation is formulated in a fully constrained scheme: all involved equations are explicitly elliptic except the wave equation that describes the two independent degrees of freedom of the gravitational field. The formalism covers naturally the conformal-flat-condition (CFC) approach by Isenberg, Wilson, and Mathews and the improved second PN-order exact approach CFC+. For stationary configurations, like Kerr black holes, agreement …

We calculate via the effective field theory (EFT) approach the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) spin1-spin2 conservative potential for a binary. Hereby, we first demonstrate the ability of the EFT approach to go at NNLO in post-Newtonian (PN) corrections from spin effects. The NNLO spin1-spin2 interaction is evaluated at fourth PN order for a binary of maximally rotating compact objects. This sector includes contributions from diagrams, which are not pure spin1-spin2 diagrams, as they contribute through the leading-order spin accelerations and precessions, that should be first taken into a…
The Fokker action of point-particle binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity has been determined previously. However two ambiguity parameters associated with infra-red (IR) divergencies of spatial integrals had to be introduced. These two parameters were fixed by comparison with gravitational self-force (GSF) calculations of the conserved energy and periastron advance for circular orbits in the test-mass limit. In the present paper together with a companion paper, we determine both these ambiguities from first principle, by means of dimensional regulariza…
As a crucial step towards the completion of the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) gravitational-wave generation from compact binary systems, we obtain the expressions of the so-called "canonical" multipole moments of the source in terms of the "source" and "gauge" moments. The canonical moments describe the propagation of gravitational waves outside the source's near zone, while the source and gauge moments encode explicit information about the matter source. Those two descriptions, in terms of two sets of canonical moments or in terms of six sets of source and gauge moments, are isometric. We thus …
We present the first complete (i.e., ambiguity-free) derivation of the equations of motion of two non-spinning compact objects up to the 4PN order, based on the Fokker action of point particles in harmonic coordinates. The last ambiguity parameter is determined from first principle, by resorting to a matching between the near zone and far zone fields, and a consistent computation of the 4PN tail effect in d dimensions. Dimensional regularization is used throughout for treating IR divergences appearing at 4PN order, as well as UV divergences due to the model of point particles describing compac…
The regularization and renormalization of the radiative mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is investigated at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. As clear from the conservative 4PN equations of motion, a dimensional regularization has to be implemented in order to properly treat the non-linear interactions experienced by gravitational waves during their propagation toward future null infinity. By implementing such procedure, we show that the poles coming from the source moment (computed in a companion paper) are exactly…
The mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is computed at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The multipole moments are defined by matching between the field in the exterior zone of the matter system and the PN field in the near zone, following the multipolar-post-Minkowskian (MPM)-PN formalism. The matching implies a specific regularization for handling infra-red (IR) divergences of the multipole moments at infinity, based on the Hadamard finite part procedure. On the other hand, the calculation entails ultra-violet (UV) d…
We review our recent derivation of a Fokker action describing the conservative dynamics of a compact binary system at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The two bodies are modeled by point particles, which induces ultraviolet (UV) divergences that are cured by means of dimensional regularization combined with a renormalization of the particle's wordlines. Associated with the propagation of wave tails at infinity is the appearance of a non-local-in-time conservative tail effect at the 4PN order in the Lagrangian. In turn this implies the appearance of infrared …
We present the next-to-next-to-leading order post-Newtonian (PN) spin(1)-spin(2) Hamiltonian for two self-gravitating spinning compact objects. If both objects are rapidly rotating, then the corresponding interaction is comparable in strength to a 4PN effect. The Hamiltonian is checked via the global Poincare algebra with the center-of-mass vector uniquely determined by an ansatz.
The paper gives full details of the computation within the canonical formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner of the local-in-time part of the fourth post-Newtonian, i.e. of power eight in one over speed of light, conservative Hamiltonian of spinless compact binary systems. The Hamiltonian depends only on the bodies' positions and momenta. Dirac delta distributions are taken as source functions. Their full control is furnished by dimensional continuation, by means of which the occurring ultraviolet (UV) divergences are uniquely regularized. The applied near-zone expansion of the time-symmetric…
In this letter, we exploit the Damour-Deruelle solution to derive the analytical expression of the coordinate time in terms of the polar angle. This formula has advantageous applications in both pulsar timing and gravitational-wave theory.
The conservative dynamics of gravitationally interacting two-point-mass systems has been recently determined at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation [T.Damour, P.Jaranowski, and G.Schäfer, Phys. Rev. D 89, 064058 (2014)], and found to be nonlocal in time. We show how to transcribe this dynamics within the effective one-body (EOB) formalism. To achieve this EOB transcription, we develop a new strategy involving the (infinite-)order-reduction of a nonlocal dynamics to an ordinary action-angle Hamiltonian. Our final, equivalent EOB dynamics comprises two (local) radial potentials, $A(r)$…
The Fokker action governing the motion of compact binary systems without spins is derived in harmonic coordinates at the fourth post-Newtonian approximation (4PN) of general relativity. Dimensional regularization is used for treating the local ultraviolet (UV) divergences associated with point particles, followed by a renormalization of the poles into a redefinition of the trajectories of the point masses. Effects at the 4PN order associated with wave tails propagating at infinity are included consistently at the level of the action. A finite part procedure based on analytic continuation deals…
We discuss in detail the weak field limit of f(R,G) gravity taking into account analytic functions of the Ricci scalar R and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant G. Specifically, we develop, in metric formalism, the Newtonian, Post Newtonian and Parameterized Post Newtonian limits starting from general f(R, G) Lagrangian. The special cases of f(R) and f(G) gravities are considered. In the case of the Newtonian limit of f(R, G) gravity, a general solution in terms of Green's functions is achieved.
In this paper, we derive the post-Newtonian equations of the ideal Magnetohydrodynamics. To do so, we use the modern approach to post-Newtonian theory, where the harmonic gauge is used instead of the standard post-Newtonian gauge, and find the post-Newtonian metric in the presence of the electromagnetic fields. We show that although the electric field does not contribute in the metric and curvature of the spacetime, the magnetic field appears in the time-time component of the metric. The appearance of the magnetic field, in principle, leads to new relativistic contributions to the magnetohydro…
The next-to-next-to-leading order spin-squared interaction potential for generic compact binaries is derived for the first time via the effective field theory for gravitating spinning objects in the post-Newtonian scheme. The spin-squared sector is an intricate one, as it requires the consideration of the point particle action beyond minimal coupling, and mainly involves the spin-squared worldline couplings, which are quite complex, compared to the worldline couplings from the minimal coupling part of the action. This sector also involves the linear in spin couplings, as we go up in the nonlin…
A fourth order generalized f(R) gravity theory (FOG) is considered with the Einstein-Hilbert action $R+aR^{2}+bR_{μν}R^{μν},$ $R_{μν}$ being Ricci\'{}s tensor and R the curvature scalar. The field equations are applied to spherical bodies where Newtonian gravity is a good approximation. The result is that for $0\leq a\sim -b<<R^{2}$, $R$ being the body radius, the gravitational field outside the body contains two Yukawas, one attractive and the other one repulsive, in addition to the Newtonian term. For $a\sim -b>>R^{2}$ the gravitational field near the body is zero but at distances greater th…
While the standard and most popular explanation for the flatness of galaxy rotation curves is dark matter, one cannot at this stage rule out an explanation based on a modified law of gravitation, which agrees with Newtonian gravitation on the scale of the solar system, but differs from it on larger length scales. Examples include Modfied Newtonian Dynamics [MOND] and Scalar-Tensor-Vector Gravity [STVG]. Here we report on a fourth order modification of the Poisson equation which yields the same Yukawa type modification of Newtonian gravity as STVG, and which can explain flat galaxy rotation cur…
We present a recent result on the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) limit of Horndeski's gravity theory and its consistency with solar system observations.
We derive a coordinate-independent formulation of the post-1-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. This formulation is a generalization of the Newton-Cartan geometric formulation of Newtonian gravity. It involves several fields and a connection, but no spacetime metric at the fundamental level. We show that the usual coordinate-dependent equations of post-Newtonian gravity are recovered when one specializes to asymptotically flat spacetimes and to appropriate classes of coordinates.
We study the post-Newtonian limit of a generalized dilaton gravity in which gravity is coupled to dilaton and eletromagnetic fields. The field equations are derived using the post-Newtonian scheme, and the approximate solution is presented for a point mass with electric and dilaton charges. The result indicates that the dilaton effect can be detected, in post-Newtonian level, using a charged test particle but not a neutral one. We have also checked that the approximate solution is indeed consistent with the weak field expansion of charged dilaton black hole solution in the harmonic coordinate.
In this article we calculate the post-Newtonian limit of a general class of scalar-nonmetricity theories of gravity. The action is assumed to be a free function of the nonmetricity scalar, the kinetic term of the scalar field, two derivative couplings and the scalar field itself. We use the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism to solve the arising field equations for the case of a massless scalar field in order to compare several subclasses of this theory to solar system observations. In particular, we find several classes of theories which are indistinguishable from general relativity on the…
In this paper, we revisit and complete our preceding work on the Fokker Lagrangian describing the dynamics of compact binary systems at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) order in harmonic coordinates. We clarify the impact of the non-local character of the Fokker Lagrangian or the associated Hamiltonian on both the conserved energy and the relativistic periastron precession for circular orbits. We show that the non-locality of the action, due to the presence of the tail effect at the 4PN order, gives rise to an extra contribution to the conserved integral of energy with respect to the Hamiltonia…
We parameterize the second post-Newtonian (2PN) metric for a gravitating system of fluids in the generalized harmonic gauge, and find that there are only three independent 2PN parameters (i.e. $ω$, $δ$ and $δ_2$) for satisfying some conservation laws including the conservations of energy, momentum, angular-momentum and the uniform motion of the center-of-mass.
We hereby derive the Newtonian metric potentials for the fourth-derivative gravity including the one-loop logarithm quantum corrections. It is explicitly shown that the behavior of the modified Newtonian potential near the origin is improved respect to the classical one, but this is not enough to remove the curvature singularity in $r=0$. Our result is grounded on a rigorous proof based on numerical and analytic computations.
We analyze p-brane black hole solutions with `block-orthogonal' intersection rules. The post-Newtonian parameters beta and gamma corresponding to 4-dimensional section of the metric are calculated. A family of solutions with gamma=1 is singled out. Some examples of solutions (e.g. in D=11 supergravity) are considered.
We discuss an effective theory for the quantum static gravitational potential in spherical symmetry up to the first post-Newtonian correction. We build a suitable Lagrangian from the weak field limit of the Einstein-Hilbert action coupled to pressureless matter. Classical solutions of the field equation lead to the correct post-Newtonian expansion. Furthermore, we portray the Newtonian results in a quantum framework by means of a coherent quantum state, which is properly corrected to accomodate post-Newtonian corrections. These considerations provide a link between the corpuscular model of Dva…
In a previous paper we derived a post-Newtonian approximation to cosmology which, in contrast to former Newtonian and post-Newtonian cosmological theories, has a well-posed initial value problem. In this paper, this new post-Newtonian theory is compared with the fully general relativistic theory, in the context of the k = 0 Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmologies. It is found that the post-Newtonian theory reproduces the results of its general relativistic counterpart, whilst the Newtonian theory does not.
With the aim of providing high accuracy post-Newtonian (PN) templates for the analysis of gravitational waves generated by compact binary systems, we complete the analytical derivation of the source type mass quadrupole moment of compact binaries (without spins) at the fourth PN order of general relativity. Similarly to the case of the conservative 4PN equations of motion, we show that the quadrupole moment at that order contains a non-local (in time) contribution, arising from the tail-transported interaction entering the conservative part of the dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate the infr…
Emission of anisotropic gravitational radiation from compact binary system leads to a flux of linear momentum. This results in the recoil of the system. We investigate the rate of loss of Linear momentum flux in the far zone of the source using various mass type and current type multipole moments for inspiralling compact binary mergers in quasi-elliptical orbits at 2.5 Post Newtonian order. We compute the linear momentum flux accurate up to $\mathcal{O}(e_t)$ in harmonic coordinate. A 2.5 Post Newtonian Quasi-Keplarian representation of the parametric solution to the Post Newtonian equation of…
We derive the radiation reaction forces on a compact binary inspiral through 3.5 order in the post-Newtonian expansion using the effective field theory approach. We utilize a recent formulation of Hamilton's variational principle that rigorously extends the usual Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms to dissipative systems, including the inspiral of a compact binary from the emission of gravitational waves. We find agreement with previous results, which thus provides a non-trivial confirmation of the extended variational principle. The results from this work nearly complete the equations of mo…
We complete the derivation of the conservative dynamics of binary systems to fourth Post-Newtonian (4PN) order in the effective field theory (EFT) approach. We present a self-contained (ambiguity-free) computation of the renormalized Lagrangian, entirely within the confines of the PN expansion. While we confirm the final results reported in the literature, we clarify several issues regarding intermediate infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) divergences, as well as the renormalization procedure. First, we properly identify the IR and UV singularities using (only) dimensional regularization and th…
In a compact binary coalescence, the spins of the compact objects can have a significant effect on the orbital motion and gravitational-wave (GW) emission. For generic spin orientations, the orbital plane precesses, leading to characteristic modulations of the GW signal. The observation of precession effects is crucial to discriminate among different binary formation scenarios, and to carry out precise tests of General Relativity. Here, we work toward an improved description of spin effects in binary inspirals, within the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism, which is commonly used to build wave…
The Newtonian limit of fourth-order gravity is worked out discussing its viability with respect to the standard results of General Relativity. We investigate the limit in the metric approach which, with respect to the Palatini formulation, has been much less studied in the recent literature, due to the higher-order of the field equations. In addition, we refrain from exploiting the formal equivalence of higher-order theories considering the analogy with specific scalar-tensor theories, i.e. we work in the so-called Jordan frame in order to avoid possible misleading interpretations of the resul…
The Parametrized Post-Newtonian expansion of gravitational theories with a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is performed and confrontation of such theories with Solar system experiments is discussed.
We calculate the potential contributions of the Hamiltonian in harmonic coordinates up 6PN for binary mass systems to $O(G_N^4)$ and perform comparisons to recent results in the literature \cite{Bern:2021dqo} and \cite{Bini:2020nsb}.
We report here on a line of work that has played a key role in formally establishing and going beyond the state of the art in the effective field theory (EFT) approach and in post-Newtonian (PN) gravity. We also outline here how this comprehensive framework in fact forms the outset of a prospective rich research program, building on the public Feynman and PN technology developed.
