We consider the influence of a spin accumulation in a normal metal on the magnetic statics and dynamics in an adjacent magnetic insulator. In particular, we focus on arbitary angles between the spin accumulation and the easy-axis of the magnetic insulator. Based on Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology supplemented with magnetoelectronic circuit theory, we find that the magnetic texture twists into a stable configuration that turns out to be described by a virtual, or image, domain wall configuration, i.e., a domain wall outside the ferromagnet. We show that even when the spin accumulation is perpendicular to the anisotropy axis, the magnetic texture develops a component parallel to the spin accumulation for sufficiently large spin bias. The emergence of this parallel component gives rise to threshold behavior in the spin Hall magnetoresistance and nonlocal magnon transport. This threshold can be used to design novel spintronic and magnonic devices that can be operated without external magnetic fields.
We study a family of globally smooth spatially varying two dimensional stacking textures in bilayer graphene. We find that the strain-minimizing stacking patterns connecting inequivalent ground states with local $AB$ and $BA$ interlayer registries are two dimensional twisted textures of an interlayer displacement field. We construct and display these topological stacking textures for bilayer graphene, examine their interactions and develop the composition rules that allow us to represent other more complex stacking textures, including globally twisted graphenes and extended one dimensional dom…
Using the Büttiker-Landauer formulation of transport theory in the linear response regime, the valley currents and non-local resistances of bilayer graphene nanostructures with broken inversion symmetry are calculated. It is shown that broken inversion symmetry in bilayer graphene nanostructures leads to striking enhancement of the non-local 4-terminal resistance and to valley currents several times stronger than the conventional electric current when the Fermi energy is in the spectral gap close to the energy of Dirac point. The scaling relation between local and non-local resistances is inve…
Motivated by the recent experiment demonstration of stacking dependent interlayer magnetic interaction [T. Song et al., Nat. Mater. 18, 1298 (2019); T. Li et al., Nat. Mater. 18, 1303 (2019); W. Chen et al., Science 366, 983 (2019)], we investigate the magnetization textures and the control possibilities in the moiré pattern formed of twisted bilayer two-dimensional (2D) magnets CrX$_3$ (X=Br, I). We find that the stacking dependent interlayer magnetic interaction results in the formation of periodic magnetization domains in a long-period moiré pattern. Magnetization textures with various topo…
The transport properties of a twisted bilayer graphene barrier are investigated for various twist angles. Remarkably, for small twist angles around the magic angle $θ_m \sim 1.05^{\circ}$, the local currents around the AA-stacked regions are strongly enhanced compared to the injected electron rate. Furthermore, the total and counterflow (magnetic) current patterns show high correlations in these regions, given rise to well-defined magnetic moments that form a magnetic Moiré superlattice. The orientation and magnitude of these magnetic moments changes as function of the gate voltage and possibl…
The interlayer van der Waals interaction in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) induces both in-plane and out-of-plane atomic displacements showing complex patterns that depend on the twist angle. In particular, for small twist angles, within each graphene layer, the relaxations give rise to a vortex-like displacement pattern which is known to affect the dispersion of the flat bands. Here, we focus on yet another structural property, the chirality of the twisted bilayer. We perform first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to investigate the properties induced by twist chira…
We report the fabrication and characterization of gate-defined hole quantum dots in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$. The devices were operated with gates above and below the WSe$_2$ layer to accumulate a hole gas, which for some devices was then selectively depleted to define the dot. Temperature dependence of conductance in the Coulomb blockade regime is consistent with transport through a single level, and excited state transport through the dots was observed at temperatures up to 10 K. For adjacent charge states of a bilayer WSe$_2$ dot, magnetic field dependence of excited state energies was…
We study theoretically the influence of spin accumulation on superconductivity in a superconductor/ferromagnet bilayer. It is well-known that the superconductivity in S/F bilayers is suppressed by the proximity to a ferromagnet. The spin accumulation by itself is also a depairing factor. But here we show that creation of the spin accumulation on top of effective exchange depairing, caused by the proximity to a ferromagnet, can lead to an opposite result. The superconductivity can be partially recovered by spin-dependent quasiparticle distribution. The systems with realistic parameters are cons…

We present a microscopic theory of spin torque due to diffusive spin currents induced by spin accumulation. The obtained expression is a natural extension of the existing one due to 'local' spin currents associated with ordinary electric currents, and is the reciprocal of the spin motive force which induces charge accumulation as studied recently [J. Shibata and H. Kohno, Phys. Rev. B84, 184408 (2011)]. The result is applied to a domain wall motion in a nonlocal spin injection system, and the torque and force due to diffusive spin current are evaluated.
Using the Boltzmann formalism based on the first principles electronic structure and scattering rates, we investigate the current-induced spin accumulation and spin-orbit torques in FePt/Pt and Co/Cu bilayers in the presence of substitutional impurities. In FePt/Pt bilayers we consider the effect of intermixing of Fe and Pt atoms in the FePt layer, and find a crucial dependence of spin accumulation and spin-orbit torques on the details of the distribution of these defects. In Co/Cu bilayers we predict that the magnitude and sign of the spin-orbit torque and spin accumulation depend very sensit…
The spin Hall effect (SHE), in which electrical current generates transverse spin current, plays an important role in spintronics for the generation and manipulation of spin-polarized electrons. The phenomenon originates from spin-orbit coupling. In general, stronger spin-orbit coupling favors larger SHEs but shorter spin relaxation times and diffusion lengths. To achieve both large SHEs and long-range spin transport in a single material has remained a challenge. Here we demonstrate a giant intrinsic SHE in AB-stacked MoTe2/WSe2 moiré bilayers by direct magneto optical imaging. Under moderate …
The existence of spin-triplet superconductivity in non-collinear magnetic heterostructures with superconductors is by now well established. This observation lays the foundation of superconducting spintronics with the aim to create a low-power consuming devices in order to replace the conventional electronics limited by heating. From a fundamental point of view the investigation of the structure and properties of spin-triplet Cooper pairs continues. Recently, spectroscopic evidence has shown to offer more detailed insights in the structure of triplet Cooper pairs than the supercurrent. Hence, w…
Inversion symmetric materials are forbidden to show an overall spin texture in their band structure in the presence of time-reversal symmetry. However, in van der Waals materials which lack inversion symmetry within a single layer, it has been proposed that a layer-dependent spin texture can arise leading to a coupled spin-layer degree of freedom. Here we use time-resolved Kerr rotation in inversion symmetric WSe$_{2}$ and MoSe$_{2}$ bulk crystals to study this spin-layer polarization and unveil its dynamics. Our measurements show that the spin-layer relaxation time in WSe$_2$ is limited by ph…
We investigated spin Hall magnetoresistance in FeMn/Pt bilayers, which was found to be one order of magnitude larger than that of heavy metal and insulating ferromagnet or antiferromagnet bilayer systems, and comparable to that of NiFe/Pt bilayers. The spin Hall magnetoresistance shows a non-monotonic dependence on the thicknesses of both FeMn and Pt. The former can be accounted for by the thickness dependence of net magnetization in FeMn thin films, whereas the latter is mainly due to spin accumulation and diffusion in Pt. Through analysis of the Pt thickness dependence, the spin Hall angle, …
A topological insulator is a novel quantum state, characterized by symmetry-protected non-trivial edge/surface states. Our first-principle simulations show the significant effects of the chemical decoration on edge states of topological Bi(111) bilayer nanoribbon, which remove the trivial edge state and recover the Dirac linear dispersion of topological edge state. By comparing the edge states with and without chemical decoration, the Bi(111) bilayer nanoribbon offers a simple system for assessing conductance fluctuation of edge states. The chemical decoration can also modify the penetration d…
Recent studies evidence the emergence of asymmetric electron transport in layered conductors owing to the interplay between electrical conductivity, magnetization, and the spin Hall or Rashba- Edelstein effects. Here, we investigate the unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) caused by the current-induced spin accumulation in Co/Pt and CoCr/Pt bilayers. We identify three competing mechanisms underpinning the resistance asymmetry, namely interface and bulk spin-dependent electron scattering and electron-magnon scattering. Our measurements provide a consistent description of the current, magnetic…

An ultrafast spin current can be induced by femtosecond laser excitation in a ferromagnetic (FM) thin film in contact with a nonmagnetic (NM) metal. The propagation of an ultrafast spin current into NM metal has recently been found in experiments to generate transient spin accumulation. Unlike spin accumulation in equilibrium NM metals that occurs due to spin transport at the Fermi energy, transient spin accumulation involves highly nonequilibrium hot electrons well above the Fermi level. To date, the diffusion and dissipation of this transient spin accumulation has not been well studied. Usin…
Graphene and bilayer graphene quantum dots are promising hosts for spin qubits with long coherence times. Although recent technological improvements make it possible to confine single electrons electrostatically in bilayer graphene quantum dots, and their spin and valley texture of the single particle spectrum has been studied in detail, their relaxation dynamics remains still unexplored. Here, we report on transport through a high-frequency gate controlled single-electron bilayer graphene quantum dot. By transient current spectroscopy of single-electron spin states, we extract a lower bound o…
We present a formalism that simultaneously incorporates the effect of quantum tunneling and spin diffusion on spin Hall magnetoresistance observed in normal metal/ferromagnetic insulator bilayers (such as Pt/YIG) and normal metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayers (such as Pt/Co), in which the angle of magnetization influences the magnetoresistance of the normal metal. In the normal metal side the spin diffusion is known to affect the landscape of the spin accumulation caused by spin Hall effect and subsequently the magnetoresistance, while on the ferromagnet side the quantum tunneling effect is det…
Dynamic response of spin accumulation to a time-dependent magnetic field has been investigated in a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer under ferromagnetic resonance. In this system, magnetization precession driven by a microwave generates direct-current (dc) and alternate-current (ac) spin accumulation in the nonmagnetic layer by the spin pumping. The ac spin accumulation is coupled with the microwave magnetic field through a dynamical Hanle spin precession, giving rise to rectified spin accumulation comparable with the dc spin accumulation directly generated by the spin pumping.
Spin current injection and spin accumulation near a ferromagnetic insulator (FI)/nonmagnetic metal (NM) bilayer film under a thermal gradient is investigated theoretically. Using the Fermi golden rule and the Boltzmann equations, we find that FI and NM can exchange spins via interfacial electron-magnon scattering because of the imbalance between magnon emission and absorption caused by either non-equilibrium distribution of magnons or non-equilibrium between magnons and electrons. A temperature gradient in FI and/or a temperature difference across the FI/NM interface generates a spin current w…
Magnetoresistive effects are usually invariant upon inversion of the magnetization direction. In noncentrosymmetric conductors, however, nonlinear resistive terms can give rise to a current dependence that is quadratic in the applied voltage and linear in the magnetization. Here we demonstrate that such conditions are realized in simple bilayer metal films where the spin-orbit interaction and spin-dependent scattering couple the current-induced spin accumulation to the electrical conductivity. We show that the longitudinal resistance of Ta|Co and Pt|Co bilayers changes when reversing the polar…
We study spin transport in a fully hBN encapsulated monolayer-graphene van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure, at room temperature. A top-layer of bilayer-hBN is used as a tunnel barrier for spin-injection and detection in graphene with ferromagnetic cobalt electrodes. We report surprisingly large and bias induced (differential) spin-injection (detection) polarizations up to 50% (135%) at a positive voltage bias of +0.6 V, as well as sign inverted polarizations up to -70% (-60%) at a reverse bias of -0.4 V. This demonstrates the potential of bilayer-hBN tunnel barriers for practical graphene spin…
We demonstrate that the hybrid structures consisting of a superconducting layer with an adjacent spin-textured ferromagnet demonstrate the variety of equilibrium magnetoelectric effects originating from coupling between the conduction electron spin and superconducting current. By deriving and solving the generalized Usadel equation which takes into account the spin-filtering effect we find that a supercurrent generates spin polarization in the superconducting film which is non-coplanar with the local ferromagnetic moment. The inverse magnetoelectric effect in such structures is shown to result…
Combining first-principles calculations and spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we identify the helical spin textures for three different Dirac cone states in the interfaced systems of a 2D topological insulator (TI) of Bi(111) bilayer and a 3D TI Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3. The spin texture is found to be the same for the intrinsic Dirac cone of Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 surface state, the extrinsic Dirac cone of Bi bilayer state induced by Rashba effect, and the hybridized Dirac cone between the former two states. Further orbit- and atom-resolved analysis shows that s and pz orbit…
We have studied the edge spin accumulation in a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas formed in a symmetric well with two subbands. This study is strongly motivated by the recent experiment of Hernandez et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 88}, 161305(R) (2013)] who demonstrated the spin accumulation near the edges of a bilayer symmetric GaAs structure in contrast to no effect in a single-layer configuration. The intrinsic mechanism of the spin-orbit interaction we consider arises from the coupling between two subband states of opposite parities. We obtain a parametrically large magnitude of the edg…
Using a semiclassical approach that simultaneously incorporates the spin Hall effect (SHE), spin diffusion, quantum well states, and interface spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we address the interplay of these mechanisms as the origin of the in-plane current induced spin torque observed in the normal metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayer thin films. Focusing on the bilayers with a ferromagnet much thinner than its spin diffusion length, such as Pt/Co with $\sim 10$nm thickness, our approach addresses simultaneously the two contributions to the spin torque, namely the spin-transfer torque (SHE-STT) due t…
Twisted graphene multilayers provide tunable platforms to engineer flat bands and exploit the associated strongly correlated physics. The two-dimensional nature of these systems makes them suitable for encapsulation by materials that break specific symmetries. In this context, recently discovered two-dimensional helimagnets, such as the multiferroic monolayer NiI$_2$, are specially appealing for breaking time-reversal and inversion symmetries due to their nontrivial spin textures. Here we show that this spin texture can be imprinted on the electronic structure of twisted bilayer graphene by pr…
Spin-polarized electron transport driven by inhomogeneous magnetic dynamics is discussed in the limit of a large exchange coupling. Electron spins rigidly following the time-dependent magnetic profile experience spin-dependent fictitious electric and magnetic fields. We show that the electric field acquires important corrections due to spin dephasing, when one relaxes the spin-projection approximation. Furthermore, spin-flip scattering between the spin bands needs to be taken into account in order to calculate voltages and spin accumulations induced by the magnetic dynamics. A phenomenological…
The effective field torque of an yttrium-iron-garnet film on the spin accumulation in an attached Pt film is measured by the spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). As a result, the magnetization direction of a ferromagnetic insulating layer can be measured electrically. Experimental transverse and longitudinal resistances are well described by the theoretical model of SMR in terms of the direct and inverse spin-Hall effect, for different Pt thicknesses [3, 4, 8 and 35nm]. Adopting a spin-Hall angle of Pt $θ_{SH}=0.08$, we obtain the spin diffusion length of Pt ($λ=1.1\pm0.3$nm) as well as the real…
Topological solitons in CP^{N-1} models coupled with Chern-Simons gauge theory and a Hopf term are studied both analytically and numerically. These models are low-energy effective theories for the quantum Hall effect with internal degrees of freedom, like that in bilayer electron systems. We explicitly show that the CP^{N-1} models describe quite well spin textures in the original Chern-Simons theory of bosonized electrons.
The viability of past, current and future devices for information technology hinges on their sensitivity to the presence of impurities. The latter can lead to resistivity anomalies, the so-called Kondo effect, reshape extrinsically Hall effects or reduce the efficiency of magnetoresistance effects essential in spintronics. Here we demonstrate that atomic defects enable highly efficient all-electrical detection of spin-swirling textures, in particular magnetic skyrmions, which are promising bits candidates in future spintronics devices. Impurities amplify the bare transport signal and can alter…
Magnetic skyrmions are textures behaving as quasiparticles which are topologically different from other states. Their discovery in systems with broken inversion symmetry sparked the search for materials containing such magnetic phase at room temperature. Their topological properties combined with the chirality-related spin-orbit torques make them interesting objects to control the magnetization at nanoscale. Here we show that a pair of coupled skyrmions with the same topological charge and opposite chiralities can be stabilized in a symmetric magnetic bilayer system by combining Dzyaloshinskii…
The control of a ferromagnet's magnetization via only electric currents requires the efficient generation of current-driven spin-torques. In magnetic structures based on topological insulators (TIs) current-induced spin-orbit torques can be generated. Here we show that the addition of graphene, or bilayer graphene, to a TI-based magnetic structure greatly enhances the current-induced spin density accumulation and significantly reduces the amount of power dissipated. We find that this enhancement can be as high as a factor of 100, giving rise to a giant Edelstein effect. Such a large enhancemen…
Recent experiments on strongly correlated bilayer quantum Hall systems strongly suggest that, contrary to the usual assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is not completely frozen either in the quantum Hall or in the compressibles states that occur at filling factor $ν=1.$ These experiments imply that the quasiparticles at $ν=1$ could have both spin and pseudospin textures i.e. they could be CP$^{3}$ skyrmions. Using a microscopic unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, we compute the energy of several crystal states with spin, pseudospin and mixed spin-pseudospin textures around $ν=…
The manipulation of the magnetization by spin-orbit torques (SOTs) has recently been extensively studied due to its potential for efficiently writing information in magnetic memories. Particular attention is paid to non-centrosymmetric systems with space inversion asymmetry, where SOTs emerge even in single-layer materials. The half-metallic half-Heusler PtMnSb is an interesting candidate for studies of this intrinsic SOT. Here, we report on the growth and epitaxial properties of PtMnSb thin films and PtMnSb/Pt bilayers deposited on MgO(001) substrates by dc magnetron co-sputtering at high tem…
Recent experiments have revealed nonlinear features of the magnetoresistance in metallic bilayers consisting of a heavy-metal (HM) and a ferromagnetic metal (FM). A small change in the lon- gitudinal resistance of the bilayer has been observed when reversing the direction of either the applied in-plane current or the magnetization. We attribute such nonlinear transport behavior to the spin-polarization dependence of the electron mobility in the FM layer acting in concert with the spin accumulation induced in that layer by the spin Hall current originating in the bulk of the HM layer. An explic…
Motivated by manipulating the magnetic order of bilayer CrI$_3$, we carry out microscopic calculations to find the magnetic order and various magnetic domains of the system in the presence of an electric field. Making use of density functional simulations, a spin model Hamiltonian is introduced consisting of isotropic exchange couplings, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, and on-site magnetic anisotropy. The spin dynamics of two well-known states of bilayer CrI$_3$, low temperature (LT) and high temperature (HT) phases, are obtained by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. We show…
