Localized collocation methods based on radial basis functions (RBFs) for elliptic problems appear to be non-robust in the presence of Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper we overcome this issue by formulating the RBF-generated finite difference method in a discrete least-squares setting instead. This allows us to prove high-order convergence under node refinement and to numerically verify that the least-squares formulation is more accurate and robust than the collocation formulation. The implementation effort for the modified algorithm is comparable to that for the collocation method.
The present paper is focused on the comparison of the efficiency of two important meshless interpolants for gravity acceleration interpolation. Compactly-supported spherical radial basis functions and interpolating moving least squares are used to interpolate actual gravity accelerations in southern Africa. Interpolated values are compared with actual values, gathered by observation. A thorough analysis is presented for the standard deviation of the differences between interpolated and actual values. Three different class of spherical radial basis functions-Poisson, singularity, and logarithmi…
Radial basis function methods are powerful tools in numerical analysis and have demonstrated good properties in many different simulations. However, for time-dependent partial differential equations, only a few stability results are known. In particular, if boundary conditions are included, stability issues frequently occur. The question we address in this paper is how provable stability for RBF methods can be obtained. We develop and construct energy-stable radial basis function methods using the general framework of summation-by-parts operators often used in the Finite Difference and Finite …
The direct method used for calculating smooth radial basis function (RBF) interpolants in the flat limit becomes numerically unstable. The RBF-QR algorithm bypasses this ill-conditioning using a clever change of basis technique. We extend this method for computing interpolants involving matrix-valued kernels, specifically surface divergence-free RBFs on the sphere, in the flat limit. Results illustrating the effectiveness of this algorithm are presented for a divergence-free vector field on the sphere from samples at scattered points.
This paper presents an evaluation of efficient radial basis function mesh deformation for complex iced geometries. Given the high computational cost of mesh deformation, state-of-the-art radial basis function techniques are used for data reduction. The principle procedures adopted are multi-level greedy surface point selection and volume point reduction. The multi-level greedy surface point selection reduces the control point list to increase the efficiency of the interpolation operation and the volume point reduction improves the computational cost of the volume mesh update operation which is…
Global radial basis function (RBF) collocation methods with inifinitely smooth basis functions for partial differential equations (PDEs) work in general geometries, and can have exponential convergence properties for smooth solution functions. At the same time, the linear systems that arise are dense and severely ill-conditioned for large numbers of unknowns and small values of the shape parameter that determines how flat the basis functions are. We use Helmholtz equation as an application problem for the theoretical analysis and numerical experiments. We analyse and characterise the convergen…
In this work, we investigate (energy) stability of global radial basis function (RBF) methods for linear advection problems. Classically, boundary conditions (BC) are enforced strongly in RBF methods. By now it is well-known that this can lead to stability problems, however. Here, we follow a different path and propose two novel RBF approaches which are based on a weak enforcement of BCs. By using the concept of flux reconstruction and simultaneous approximation terms (SATs), respectively, we are able to prove that both new RBF schemes are strongly (energy) stable. Numerical results in one and…
Application of Meshfree Method Based on Compactly Supported Radial Basis Function for Solving Unsteady Isothermal Gas Through a Micro-Nano Porous Medium
It is well understood that boundary conditions (BCs) may cause global radial basis function (RBF) methods to become unstable for hyperbolic conservation laws (CLs). Here we investigate this phenomenon and identify the strong enforcement of BCs as the mechanism triggering such stability issues. Based on this observation we propose a technique to weakly enforce BCs in RBF methods. In the case of hyperbolic CLs, this is achieved by carefully building RBF methods from the weak form of the CL, rather than the typically enforced strong form. Furthermore, we demonstrate that global RBF methods may vi…
Radial basis functions are typically used when discretization sche-mes require inhomogeneous node distributions. While spawning from a desire to interpolate functions on a random set of nodes, they have found successful applications in solving many types of differential equations. However, the weights of the interpolated solution, used in the linear superposition of basis functions to interpolate the solution, and the actual value of the solution are completely different. In fact, these weights mix the value of the solution with the geometrical location of the nodes used to discretize the equa…
Cubature formulas (CFs) based on radial basis functions (RBFs) have become an important tool for multivariate numerical integration of scattered data. Although numerous works have been published on such RBF-CFs, their stability theory can still be considered as underdeveloped. Here, we strive to pave the way towards a more mature stability theory for RBF-CFs. In particular, we prove stability for RBF-CFs based on compactly supported RBFs under certain conditions on the shape parameter and the data points. Moreover, it is shown that asymptotic stability of many RBF-CFs is independent of polynom…
We present a new computational method by extending the Immersed Boundary (IB) method with a spectrally-accurate geometric model based on Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation of the Lagrangian structures. Our specific motivation is the modeling of platelets in hemodynamic flows, though we anticipate that our method will be useful in other applications as well. The efficacy of our new RBF-IB method is shown through a series of numerical experiments. Specifically, we compare our method with the traditional IB method in terms of convergence and accuracy, computational cost, maximum stable tim…
We present a new method for the solution of PDEs on manifolds $\mathbb{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ of co-dimension one using stable scale-free radial basis function (RBF) interpolation. Our method involves augmenting polyharmonic spline (PHS) RBFs with polynomials to generate RBF-finite difference (RBF-FD) formulas. These polynomial basis elements are obtained using the recently-developed \emph{least orthogonal interpolation} technique (LOI) on each RBF-FD stencil to obtain \emph{local} restrictions of polynomials in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to stencils on $\mathbb{M}$. The resulting RBF-LOI method uses Ca…
The radial basis function (RBF) method is used for the numerical solution of the Poisson problem in high dimension. The approximate solution can be found by solving a large system of linear equations. Here we investigate the extent to which the RBF method can be accelerated using an efficient quantum algorithm for linear equations. We compare the theoretical performance of our quantum algorithm with that of a standard classical algorithm, the conjugate gradient method. We find that the quantum algorithm can achieve a polynomial speedup.

A new projection method based on radial basis functions (RBFs) is presented for discretizing the incompressible unsteady Stokes equations in irregular geometries. The novelty of the method comes from the application of a new technique for computing the Leray-Helmholtz projection of a vector field using generalized interpolation with divergence-free and curl-free RBFs. Unlike traditional projection methods, this new method enables matching both tangential and normal components of divergence-free vector fields on the domain boundary. This allows incompressibility of the velocity field to be enfo…
We present a reduced basis (RB) method for parametrized linear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) in a least-squares finite element framework. A rigorous and reliable error estimate is developed, and is shown to bound the error with respect to the exact solution of the PDE, in contrast to estimates that measure error with respect to a finite-dimensional (high-fidelity) approximation. It is shown that the first-order formulation of the least-squares finite element is a key ingredient. The method is demonstrated using numerical examples.
In this paper, we present a method based on Radial Basis Function (RBF)-generated Finite Differences (FD) for numerically solving diffusion and reaction-diffusion equations (PDEs) on closed surfaces embedded in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our method uses a method-of-lines formulation, in which surface derivatives that appear in the PDEs are approximated locally using RBF interpolation. The method requires only scattered nodes representing the surface and normal vectors at those scattered nodes. All computations use only extrinsic coordinates, thereby avoiding coordinate distortions and singularities. We a…
We show that generalized multiquadric radial basis functions (RBFs) on $\mathbb{R}^d$ have a mean dimension that is $1+O(1/d)$ as $d\to\infty$ with an explicit bound for the implied constant, under moment conditions on their inputs. Under weaker moment conditions the mean dimension still approaches $1$. As a consequence, these RBFs become essentially additive as their dimension increases. Gaussian RBFs by contrast can attain any mean dimension between 1 and d. We also find that a test integrand due to Keister that has been influential in quasi-Monte Carlo theory has a mean dimension that oscil…
In this paper, a new localized radial basis function (RBF) method based on partition of unity (PU) is proposed for solving boundary and initial-boundary value problems. The new method is benefited from a direct discretization approach and is called the `direct RBF partition of unity (D-RBF-PU)' method. Thanks to avoiding all derivatives of PU weight functions as well as all lower derivatives of local approximants, the new method is faster and simpler than the standard RBF-PU method. Besides, the discontinuous PU weight functions can now be utilized to develop the method in a more efficient and…
Scattered data fitting is a frequently encountered problem for reconstructing an unknown function from given scattered data. Radial basis function (RBF) methods have proven to be highly useful to deal with this problem. We describe two quantum algorithms to efficiently fit scattered data based on globally and compactly supported RBFs respectively. For the globally supported RBF method, the core of the quantum algorithm relies on using coherent states to calculate the radial functions and a nonsparse matrix exponentiation technique for efficiently performing a matrix inversion. A quadratic spee…
Decoupled fractional Laplacian wave equation can describe the seismic wave propagation in attenuating media. Fourier pseudospectral implementations, which solve the equation in spatial frequency domain, are the only existing methods for solving the equation. For the earth media with curved boundaries, the pseudospectral methods could be less attractive to handle the irregular computational domains. In the paper, we propose a radial basis function collocation method that can easily tackle the irregular domain problems. Unlike the pseudospectral methods, the proposed method solves the equation i…
