In this work, we investigate (energy) stability of global radial basis function (RBF) methods for linear advection problems. Classically, boundary conditions (BC) are enforced strongly in RBF methods. By now it is well-known that this can lead to stability problems, however. Here, we follow a different path and propose two novel RBF approaches which are based on a weak enforcement of BCs. By using the concept of flux reconstruction and simultaneous approximation terms (SATs), respectively, we are able to prove that both new RBF schemes are strongly (energy) stable. Numerical results in one and two spatial dimensions for both scalar equations and systems are presented, supporting our theoretical analysis.
Radial basis functions are typically used when discretization sche-mes require inhomogeneous node distributions. While spawning from a desire to interpolate functions on a random set of nodes, they have found successful applications in solving many types of differential equations. However, the weights of the interpolated solution, used in the linear superposition of basis functions to interpolate the solution, and the actual value of the solution are completely different. In fact, these weights mix the value of the solution with the geometrical location of the nodes used to discretize the equa…
We propose and analyze a seamless extended Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of advection-diffusion equations on semi-infinite domains. The semi-infinite half line is split into a finite subdomain where the model uses a standard polynomial basis, and a semi-unbounded subdomain where scaled Laguerre functions are employed as basis and test functions. Numerical fluxes enable the coupling at the interface between the two subdomains in the same way as standard single domain DG interelement fluxes. A novel linear analysis on the extended DG model yields unconditional stability with respect…
In the papers dealing with derivation and applications of operational matrices of Bernstein polynomials, a basis transformation, commonly a transformation to power basis, is used. The main disadvantage of this method is that the transformation may be ill-conditioned. Moreover, when applied to the numerical simulation of a functional differential equation, it leads to dense operational matrices and so a dense coefficient matrix is obtained. In this paper, we present a new property for Bernstein polynomials. Using this property, we build exact banded operational matrices for derivatives of Berns…
We present a novel hyperviscosity formulation for stabilizing RBF-FD discretizations of the advection-diffusion equation. The amount of hyperviscosity is determined quasi-analytically for commonly-used explicit, implicit, and implicit-explicit (IMEX) time integrators by using a simple 1D semi-discrete Von Neumann analysis. The analysis is applied to an analytical model of spurious growth in RBF-FD solutions that uses auxiliary differential operators mimicking the undesirable properties of RBF-FD differentiation matrices. The resulting hyperviscosity formulation is a generalization of existing …
We introduce a new framework of numerical multiscale methods for advection-dominated problems motivated by climate sciences. Current numerical multiscale methods (MsFEM) work well on stationary elliptic problems but have difficulties when the model involves dominant lower order terms. Our idea to overcome the assocociated difficulties is a semi-Lagrangian based reconstruction of subgrid variablity into a multiscale basis by solving many local inverse problems. Globally the method looks like a Eulerian method with multiscale stabilized basis. We show example runs in one and two dimensions and a…

We present a new hyperviscosity formulation for stabilizing radial basis function-finite difference (RBF-FD) discretizations of advection-diffusion-reaction equations on manifolds $\mathbb{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^3$ of co-dimension one. Our technique involves automatic addition of artificial hyperviscosity to damp out spurious modes in the differentiation matrices corresponding to surface gradients, in the process overcoming a technical limitation of a recently-developed Euclidean formulation. Like the Euclidean formulation, the manifold formulation relies on von Neumann stability analysis perfo…
We present a high-order radial basis function finite difference (RBF-FD) framework for the solution of advection-diffusion equations on time-varying domains. Our framework is based on a generalization of the recently developed Overlapped RBF-FD method that utilizes a novel automatic procedure for computing RBF-FD weights on stencils in variable-sized regions around stencil centers. This procedure eliminates the overlap parameter $δ$, thereby enabling tuning-free assembly of RBF-FD differentiation matrices on moving domains. In addition, our framework utilizes a simple and efficient procedure f…
The present paper is focused on the comparison of the efficiency of two important meshless interpolants for gravity acceleration interpolation. Compactly-supported spherical radial basis functions and interpolating moving least squares are used to interpolate actual gravity accelerations in southern Africa. Interpolated values are compared with actual values, gathered by observation. A thorough analysis is presented for the standard deviation of the differences between interpolated and actual values. Three different class of spherical radial basis functions-Poisson, singularity, and logarithmi…
Radial basis function methods are powerful tools in numerical analysis and have demonstrated good properties in many different simulations. However, for time-dependent partial differential equations, only a few stability results are known. In particular, if boundary conditions are included, stability issues frequently occur. The question we address in this paper is how provable stability for RBF methods can be obtained. We develop and construct energy-stable radial basis function methods using the general framework of summation-by-parts operators often used in the Finite Difference and Finite …
It is expensive to compute residual diffusivity in chaotic in-compressible flows by solving advection-diffusion equation due to the formation of sharp internal layers in the advection dominated regime. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is a classical method to construct a small number of adaptive orthogonal basis vectors for low cost computation based on snapshots of fully resolved solutions at a particular molecular diffusivity $D_{0}^{*}$. The quality of POD basis deteriorates if it is applied to $D_0\ll D_{0}^{*}$. To improve POD, we adapt a super-resolution generative adversarial deep …
The direct method used for calculating smooth radial basis function (RBF) interpolants in the flat limit becomes numerically unstable. The RBF-QR algorithm bypasses this ill-conditioning using a clever change of basis technique. We extend this method for computing interpolants involving matrix-valued kernels, specifically surface divergence-free RBFs on the sphere, in the flat limit. Results illustrating the effectiveness of this algorithm are presented for a divergence-free vector field on the sphere from samples at scattered points.
Subsurface flows are commonly modeled by advection-diffusion equations. Insufficient measurements or uncertain material procurement may be accounted for by random coefficients. To represent, for example, transitions in heterogeneous media, the parameters of the equation are spatially discontinuous. Specifically, a scenario with coupled advection- and diffusion coefficients that are modeled as sums of continuous random fields and discontinuous jump components are considered. For the numerical approximation of the solution, an adaptive, pathwise discretization scheme based on a Finite Element ap…
Localized collocation methods based on radial basis functions (RBFs) for elliptic problems appear to be non-robust in the presence of Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper we overcome this issue by formulating the RBF-generated finite difference method in a discrete least-squares setting instead. This allows us to prove high-order convergence under node refinement and to numerically verify that the least-squares formulation is more accurate and robust than the collocation formulation. The implementation effort for the modified algorithm is comparable to that for the collocation method.
In this paper, we propose a novel computational implicit method, which we call Isogeometric Residual Minimization (iGRM) with direction splitting. The method mixes the benefits resulting from isogeometric analysis, implicit dynamics, residual minimization, and alternating direction solver. We utilize tensor product B-spline basis functions in space, implicit second order time integration schemes, residual minimization in every time step, and we exploit Kronecker product structure of the matrix to employ linear computational cost alternating direction solver. We implement an implicit time integ…
This paper presents an evaluation of efficient radial basis function mesh deformation for complex iced geometries. Given the high computational cost of mesh deformation, state-of-the-art radial basis function techniques are used for data reduction. The principle procedures adopted are multi-level greedy surface point selection and volume point reduction. The multi-level greedy surface point selection reduces the control point list to increase the efficiency of the interpolation operation and the volume point reduction improves the computational cost of the volume mesh update operation which is…
Global radial basis function (RBF) collocation methods with inifinitely smooth basis functions for partial differential equations (PDEs) work in general geometries, and can have exponential convergence properties for smooth solution functions. At the same time, the linear systems that arise are dense and severely ill-conditioned for large numbers of unknowns and small values of the shape parameter that determines how flat the basis functions are. We use Helmholtz equation as an application problem for the theoretical analysis and numerical experiments. We analyse and characterise the convergen…
Application of Meshfree Method Based on Compactly Supported Radial Basis Function for Solving Unsteady Isothermal Gas Through a Micro-Nano Porous Medium
It is well understood that boundary conditions (BCs) may cause global radial basis function (RBF) methods to become unstable for hyperbolic conservation laws (CLs). Here we investigate this phenomenon and identify the strong enforcement of BCs as the mechanism triggering such stability issues. Based on this observation we propose a technique to weakly enforce BCs in RBF methods. In the case of hyperbolic CLs, this is achieved by carefully building RBF methods from the weak form of the CL, rather than the typically enforced strong form. Furthermore, we demonstrate that global RBF methods may vi…
Cubature formulas (CFs) based on radial basis functions (RBFs) have become an important tool for multivariate numerical integration of scattered data. Although numerous works have been published on such RBF-CFs, their stability theory can still be considered as underdeveloped. Here, we strive to pave the way towards a more mature stability theory for RBF-CFs. In particular, we prove stability for RBF-CFs based on compactly supported RBFs under certain conditions on the shape parameter and the data points. Moreover, it is shown that asymptotic stability of many RBF-CFs is independent of polynom…
We present a new computational method by extending the Immersed Boundary (IB) method with a spectrally-accurate geometric model based on Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation of the Lagrangian structures. Our specific motivation is the modeling of platelets in hemodynamic flows, though we anticipate that our method will be useful in other applications as well. The efficacy of our new RBF-IB method is shown through a series of numerical experiments. Specifically, we compare our method with the traditional IB method in terms of convergence and accuracy, computational cost, maximum stable tim…
