Steady and unsteady Poisson and Stokes equations are solved using mesh dependent Finite Element Method and meshless Radial Basis Function Collocation Method to compare the performances of these two numerical techniques across several criteria. The accuracy of Radial Basis Function Collocation Method with multiquadrics is enhanced by implementing a shape parameter optimization algorithm. For the time-dependent problems, time discretization is conducted using Backward Euler Method. The performances are assessed over the accuracy, runtime, condition number, and ease of implementation criteria. Three kinds of errors were calculated; least square error, root mean square error and maximum relative error. To calculate the least square error while using meshless Radial Basis Function Collocation Method, a novel technique is implemented. Imaginary numerical solution surfaces are created and then the volume between those imaginary surfaces and the analytic solution surfaces is calculated, enabling a fair error calculation. Lastly, all solutions are put together and solution trends are observed over the number of solution nodes vs. runtime, accuracy vs. runtime, and accuracy vs. the number of nodes. The assessment indicates the criteria under which Finite Element Method perform better and those when Radial Basis Function Collocation Method outperforms its mesh dependent counterpart.
The Radial Point Interpolation Mixed Collocation (RPIMC) method is proposed in this paper for transient analysis of diffusion problems. RPIMC is an efficient purely meshless method where the solution of the field variable is obtained through collocation. The field function and its gradient are both interpolated (mixed collocation approach) leading to reduced $C$-continuity requirement compared to strong-form collocation schemes. The method's accuracy is evaluated in heat conduction benchmark problems. The RPIMC convergence is compared against the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Mixed Collocatio…
We suggest an efficient algorithm for the selection of sparse subsets of a set of influence for the numerical discretization of differential operators on irregular nodes with polynomial consistency of a given order with the help of the QR decomposition of an appropriately weighted polynomial collocation matrix, and prove that the accuracy of the resulting numerical differentiation formulas is comparable with that of the formulas generated on the original set of influence.

In recent years, a variety of meshless methods have been developed to solve partial differential equations in complex domains. Meshless methods discretize the partial differential equations over scattered points instead of grids. Radial basis functions (RBFs) have been popularly used as high accuracy interpolants of function values at scattered locations. In this paper, we apply the polyharmonic splines (PHS) as the RBF together with appended polynomial and solve the heat conduction equation in several geometries using a collocation procedure. We demonstrate the expected exponential convergenc…

We present an exponentially convergent semi-implicit meshless algorithm for the solution of Navier-Stokes equations in complex domains. The algorithm discretizes partial derivatives at scattered points using radial basis functions as interpolants. Higher-order polynomials are appended to polyharmonic splines (PHS-RBF) and a collocation method is used to derive the interpolation coefficients. The interpolating kernels are then differentiated and the partial-differential equations are satisfied by collocation at the scattered points. The PHS-RBF interpolation is shown to be exponentially converg…
We propose and study numerically the implicit approximation in time of the Navier-Stokes equations by a Galerkin-collocation method in time combined with inf-sup stable finite element methods in space. The conceptual basis of the Galerkin-collocation approach is the establishment of a direct connection between the Galerkin method and the classical collocation methods, with the perspective of achieving the accuracy of the former with reduced computational costs in terms of less complex algebraic systems of the latter. Regularity of higher order in time of the discrete solution is ensured furthe…
In this work, we develop a high-order collocation method using radial basis function (RBF) for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation (NSE) on the rotating sphere. The method is based on solving the projection of the NSE on the space of divergence-free functions. For that, we use matrix valued kernel functions which allow an analytically divergence-free approximation of the velocity field. Using kernel functions which lead to rotation-free approximations, the pressure can be recovered by a simple kernel exchange in one of the occurring approximations, without solving an additional Poisson p…
A parallel implementation of a compatible discretization scheme for steady-state Stokes problems is presented in this work. The scheme uses generalized moving least squares to generate differential operators and apply boundary conditions. This meshless scheme allows a high-order convergence for both the velocity and pressure, while also incorporates finite-difference-like sparse discretization. Additionally, the method is inherently scalable: the stencil generation process requires local inversion of matrices amenable to GPU acceleration, and the divergence-free treatment of velocity replaces …
This paper extends a new class of positivity-preserving, entropy stable spectral collocation schemes developed for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations in [1,2] to three spatial dimensions. The new high-order schemes are provably L2 stable, design-order accurate for smooth solutions, and guarantee the pointwise positivity of thermodynamic variables for 3-D compressible viscous flows. Similar to the 1-D counterpart, the proposed schemes for the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations are constructed by using a flux-limiting technique that combines a positivity-violating entropy stable m…
In this paper, we extend the positivity-preserving, entropy stable first-order finite volume-type scheme developed for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations in [1] to three spatial dimensions. The new first-order scheme is provably entropy stable, design-order accurate for smooth solutions, and guarantees the pointwise positivity of thermodynamic variables for 3-D compressible viscous flows. Similar to the 1-D counterpart, the proposed scheme for the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations is discretized on Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto grids used for high-order spectral collocation methods. T…
We propose a stochastic collocation method based on the piecewise constant interpolation on the probability space combined with a finite volume method to solve the compressible Navier-Stokes system at the nodal points. We show convergence of numerical solutions to a statistical solution of the Navier-Stokes system on condition that the numerical solutions are bounded in probability. The analysis uses the stochastic compactness method based on the Skorokhod/Jakubowski representation theorem and the criterion of convergence in probability due to Gyöngy and Krylov.
This paper makes the first attempt to apply newly developed upwind GFDM for the meshless solution of two-phase porous flow equations. In the presented method, node cloud is used to flexibly discretize the computational domain, instead of complicated mesh generation. Combining with moving least square approximation and local Taylor expansion, spatial derivatives of oil-phase pressure at a node are approximated by generalized difference operators in the local influence domain of the node. By introducing the first-order upwind scheme of phase relative permeability, and combining the discrete boun…
The Stokes-Brinkman equations model fluid flow in highly heterogeneous porous media. In this paper, we consider the numerical solution of the Stokes-Brinkman equations with stochastic permeabilities, where the permeabilities in subdomains are assumed to be independent and uniformly distributed within a known interval. We employ a truncated anchored ANOVA decomposition alongside stochastic collocation to estimate the moments of the velocity and pressure solutions. Through an adaptive procedure selecting only the most important ANOVA directions, we reduce the number of collocation points needed …
The need for accelerating the repeated solving of certain parametrized systems motivates the development of more efficient reduced order methods. The classical reduced basis method is popular due to an offline-online decomposition and a mathematically rigorous {\em a posterior} error estimator which guides a greedy algorithm offline. For nonlinear and nonaffine problems, hyper reduction techniques have been introduced to make this decomposition efficient. However, they may be tricky to implement and often degrade the online computation efficiency. To avoid this degradation, reduced residual re…
Three kinds of Fragile Points Methods based on Petrov-Galerkin weak-forms (PG-FPMs) are proposed for analyzing heat conduction problems in nonhomogeneous anisotropic media. This is a follow-up of the previous study on the original FPM based on a symmetric Galerkin weak-form. The trial function is piecewise-continuous, written as local Taylor expansions at the Fragile Points. A modified Radial Basis Function-based Differential Quadrature (RBF-DQ) method is employed for establishing the local approximation. The Dirac delta function, Heaviside step function, and the local fundamental solution of …
In computational fluid dynamics, the demand for increasingly multidisciplinary reliable simulations, for both analysis and design optimization purposes, requires transformational advances in individual components of future solvers. At the algorithmic level, hardware compatibility and efficiency are of paramount importance in determining viability at exascale and beyond. However, equally important (if not more so) is algorithmic robustness with minimal user intervention, which becomes progressively more challenging to achieve as problem size and physics complexity increase. We numerically show …
Computations of incompressible flows with velocity boundary conditions require solution of a Poisson equation for pressure with all Neumann boundary conditions. Discretization of such a Poisson equation results in a rank-deficient matrix of coefficients. When a non-conservative discretization method such as finite difference, finite element, or spectral scheme is used, such a matrix also generates an inconsistency which makes the residuals in the iterative solution to saturate at a threshold level that depends on the spatial resolution and order of the discretization scheme. In this paper, we …
Application of Meshfree Method Based on Compactly Supported Radial Basis Function for Solving Unsteady Isothermal Gas Through a Micro-Nano Porous Medium
We present a monolithic geometric multigrid preconditioner for solving fluid-solid interaction problems in Stokes limit. The problems are discretized by a spatially adaptive high-order meshless method, the generalized moving least squares (GMLS) with adaptive $h$-refinement. In Stokes limit, solid kinematics can be dominated by the singularities governing the lubrication effects. Resolving those singularities with adaptive $h$-refinement can lead to an ill-conditioned linear system of equations. For constructing the interpolation and restriction operators - the key ingredients of the multigrid…
We present a non-nested multilevel algorithm for solving the Poisson equation discretized at scattered points using polyharmonic radial basis function (PHS-RBF) interpolations. We append polynomials to the radial basis functions to achieve exponential convergence of discretization errors. The interpolations are performed over local clouds of points and the Poisson equation is collocated at each of the scattered points, resulting in a sparse set of discrete equations for the unkown variables. To solve this set of equations, we have developed a non-nested multilevel algorithm utilizing multiple …
This paper presents a comparison of two methods for the forward uncertainty quantification (UQ) of complex industrial problems. Specifically, the performance of Multi-Index Stochastic Collocation (MISC) and adaptive multi-fidelity Stochastic Radial Basis Functions (SRBF) surrogates is assessed for the UQ of a roll-on/roll-off passengers ferry advancing in calm water and subject to two operational uncertainties, namely the ship speed and draught. The estimation of expected value, standard deviation, and probability density function of the (model-scale) resistance is presented and discussed; the…
Meshless solution to differential equations using radial basis functions (RBF) is an alternative to grid based methods commonly used. Since the meshless method does not need an underlying connectivity in the form of control volumes or elements, issues such as grid skewness that adversely impact accuracy are eliminated. Gaussian, Multiquadrics and inverse Multiquadrics are some of the most popular RBFs used for the solutions of fluid flow and heat transfer problems. But they have additional shape parameters that have to be fine tuned for accuracy and stability. Moreover, they also face stagnati…
This paper presents a comparison of two multi-fidelity methods for the forward uncertainty quantification of a naval engineering problem. Specifically, we consider the problem of quantifying the uncertainty of the hydrodynamic resistance of a roll-on/roll-off passengers ferry advancing in calm water and subject to two operational uncertainties (ship speed and payload). The first four statistical moments (mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis), and the probability density function for such quantity of interest (QoI) are computed with two multi-fidelity methods, i.e., the Multi-Index Stochastic Col…
In this paper, we study a multi-scale deep neural network (MscaleDNN) as a meshless numerical method for computing oscillatory Stokes flows in complex domains. The MscaleDNN employs a multi-scale structure in the design of its DNN using radial scalings to convert the approximation of high frequency components of the highly oscillatory Stokes solution to one of lower frequencies. The MscaleDNN solution to the Stokes problem is obtained by minimizing a loss function in terms of L2 normof the residual of the Stokes equation. Three forms of loss functions are investigated based on vorticity-veloci…
A new projection method based on radial basis functions (RBFs) is presented for discretizing the incompressible unsteady Stokes equations in irregular geometries. The novelty of the method comes from the application of a new technique for computing the Leray-Helmholtz projection of a vector field using generalized interpolation with divergence-free and curl-free RBFs. Unlike traditional projection methods, this new method enables matching both tangential and normal components of divergence-free vector fields on the domain boundary. This allows incompressibility of the velocity field to be enfo…

Different variants of the method of weighted residual finite element method are used to get a solution for the parabolic heat equation, which is considered to be the model equation for the steady state Navier-Stokes equations. Results show that the Collocation and the Least-Squares variants are more suitable for first order systems. Results also show that the Galerkin/Least-Squares method is more diffusive than other methods, and hence gives stable solutions for a wide range of Péclet numbers.
