Three algorithms are developed for uncertainty quantification in modeling coupled Stokes and Darcy flows. The porous media may consist of multiple regions with different properties. The permeability is modeled as a non-stationary stochastic variable, with its log represented as a sum of local Karhunen-Loève (KL) expansions. The problem is approximated by stochastic collocation on either tensor-product or sparse grids, coupled with a multiscale mortar mixed finite element method for the spatial discretization. A non-overlapping domain decomposition algorithm reduces the global problem to a coarse scale mortar interface problem, which is solved by an iterative solver, for each stochastic realization. In the traditional implementation, each subdomain solves a local Dirichlet or Neumann problem in every interface iteration. To reduce this cost, two additional algorithms based on deterministic or stochastic multiscale flux basis are introduced. The basis consists of the local flux (or velocity trace) responses from each mortar degree of freedom. It is computed by each subdomain independently before the interface iteration begins. The use of the multiscale flux basis avoids the need for subdomain solves on each iteration. The deterministic basis is computed at each stochastic collocation and used only at this realization. The stochastic basis is formed by further looping over all local realizations of a subdomain's KL region before the stochastic collocation begins. It is reused over multiple realizations. Numerical tests are presented to illustrate the performance of the three algorithms, with the stochastic multiscale flux basis showing significant savings in computational cost.
We construct mesh-independent and parameter-robust monolithic solvers for the coupled primal Stokes-Darcy problem. Three different formulations and their discretizations in terms of conforming and non-conforming finite element methods and finite volume methods are considered. In each case, robust preconditioners are derived using a unified theoretical framework. In particular, the suggested preconditioners utilize operators in fractional Sobolev spaces. Numerical experiments demonstrate the parameter-robustness of the proposed solvers.
This report considers a variable step time discretization algorithm proposed by Dahlquist, Liniger and Nevanlinna and applies the algorithm to the unsteady Stokes/Darcy model. Although long-time forgotten and little explored, the algorithm performs advantages in variable timestep analysis of various fluid flow systems, including the coupled Stokes/Darcy model. The paper proves that the approximate solutions to the unsteady Stokes/Darcy model are unconditionally stable due to the G-stability of the algorithm. Also variable time stepping error analysis follows from the combination of G-stability…
In this paper, we propose a new numerical scheme for the coupled Stokes-Darcy model with Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition. We use the weak Galerkin method to discretize the Stokes equation and the mixed finite element method to the Darcy equation. A discrete inf-sup condition is proved and optimal error estimates are also derived. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical analysis.
The coupled Darcy-Stokes problem is widely used for modeling fluid transport in physical systems consisting of a porous part and a free part. In this work we consider preconditioners for monolitic solution algorithms of the coupled Darcy-Stokes problem, where the Darcy problem is in primal form. We employ the operator preconditioning framework and utilize a fractional solver at the interface between the problems to obtain order optimal schemes that are robust with respect to the material parameters, i.e. the permeability, viscosity and Beavers-Joseph-Saffman parameter. Our approach is similar …
We present a strongly conservative and pressure-robust hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem. We show existence and uniqueness of a solution and present an optimal a priori error analysis for the fully discrete problem when using Backward Euler time stepping. The theoretical results are verified by numerical examples.
We consider the interaction between a free flowing fluid and a porous medium flow, where the free flowing fluid is described using the time dependent Stokes equations, and the porous medium flow is described using Darcy's law in the primal formulation. To solve this problem numerically, we use a diffuse interface approach, where the weak form of the coupled problem is written on an extended domain which contains both Stokes and Darcy regions. This is achieved using a phase-field function which equals one in the Stokes region and zero in the Darcy region, and smoothly transitions between these …
In this paper we develop an a priori error analysis of a new unified mixed finite element method for the coupling of fluid flow with porous media flow in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\in\{2,3\}$ on isotropic meshes. Flows are governed by the Stokes and Darcy equations, respectively, and the corresponding transmission conditions are given by mass conservation, balance of normal forces, and the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman law. The approach utilizes a modification of the Darcy problem which allows us to apply a variant nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart finite element to the whole coupled Stokes-Darcy problem. The w…
In this note we introduce a mixed dimensional Stokes-Darcy coupling where a $d$ dimensional Stokes' flow is coupled to a Darcy model on the $d-1$ dimensional boundary of the domain. The porous layer introduces tangential creeping flow along the boundary and allows for the modelling of boundary flow due to surface roughness. This leads to a new model of flow in fracture networks with reservoirs in an impenetrable bulk matrix. Exploiting this modelling capability, we then formulate a fluid-structure interaction method with contact, where the porous layer allows for mechanically consistent contac…
In this manuscript we focus on the question: what is the correct notion of Stokes-Biot stability? Stokes-Biot stable discretizations have been introduced, independently by several authors, as a means of discretizing Biot's equations of poroelasticity; such schemes retain their stability and convergence properties, with respect to appropriately defined norms, in the context of a vanishing storage coefficient and a vanishing hydraulic conductivity. The basic premise of a Stokes-Biot stable discretization is: one part Stokes stability and one part mixed Darcy stability. In this manuscript we rema…
A priori analysis for a generalized local projection stabilized conforming finite element approximation of Darcy flow and Stokes problems is presented in this paper. A first-order conforming P1 finite element space is used to approximate both the velocity and the pressure. It is shown that the stabilized discrete bilinear form satisfy the inf-sup condition with respect to a generalized local projection norm. Moreover, a priori error estimates are derived for both problems. Finally, the validation of the proposed stabilization scheme is demonstrated with appropriate numerical examples.
We study a decoupling iterative algorithm based on domain decomposition for the time-dependent nonlinear Stokes-Darcy model, in which different time steps can be used in the flow region and in the porous medium. The coupled system is formulated as a space-time interface problem based on the interface condition for mass conservation. The nonlinear interface problem is then solved by a nested iteration approach which involves, at each Newton iteration, the solution of a linearized interface problem and, at each Krylov iteration, parallel solution of time-dependent linearized Stokes and Darcy pro…
We propose a block-structured multigrid relaxation scheme for solving the Stokes-Darcy Brinkman equations discretized by the marker and cell scheme. An element-based additive Vanka smoother is used to solve the corresponding shifted Laplacian operator. Using local Fourier analysis, we present the stencil for the additive Vanka smoother and derive an optimal smoothing factor for Vanka-based Braess-Sarazin relaxation for the Stokes-Darcy Brinkman equations. Although the optimal damping parameter is dependent on meshsize and physical parameter, it is very close to one. Numerical results of two-gr…
In this paper, we propose a multiscale method for the Darcy-Forchheimer model in highly heterogeneous porous media. The problem is solved in the framework of generalized multiscale finite element methods (GMsFEM) combined with a multipoint flux mixed finite element (MFMFE) method. %In the MFMFE methods, appropriate mixed finite element spaces and suitable quadrature rules are employed, which allow for local velocity elimination and lead to a cell-centered system for the pressure. We consider the MFMFE method that utilizes the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Marini ($\textrm{BDM}_1$) mixed finite e…
In this report, we propose a new adaptive time filter algorithm for the unsteady Stokes/Darcy model. First we present a first order $θ$-scheme with the variable time step which is one parameter family of Linear Multi-step methods and use a time filter algorithm to increase the convergence order to second order with almost no increasing the amount of computation. Furthermore, we construct coupled and decoupled adaptive algorithms. Then we analyze stabilities and the second-order accuracy of variable time-stepping algorithm for Linear Multi-step methods plus time filter, respectively. Finally, w…
In this paper we develop an a posteriori error analysis for the stationary Stokes-Darcy coupled problem approximated by conforming finite element method on isotropic meshes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in\{2,3\}$. The approach utilizes a new robust stabilized fully mixed discretization developed by Jiaping Yu et al. (Advances in Difference Equations, SpringerOpen Journal, 2018). The a posteriori error estimate is based on a suitable evaluation on the residual of the finite element solution plus the stabilization terms. It is proven that the a posteriori error estimate provided in this paper is both r…
In this paper, an efficient ensemble domain decomposition algorithm is proposed for fast solving the fully-mixed random Stokes-Darcy model with the physically realistic Beavers-Joseph (BJ) interface conditions. We utilize the Monte Carlo method for the coupled model with random inputs to derive some deterministic Stokes-Darcy numerical models and use the idea of the ensemble to realize the fast computation of multiple problems. One remarkable feature of the algorithm is that multiple linear systems share a common coefficient matrix in each deterministic numerical model, which significantly red…
We consider the problem of iteratively solving large and sparse double saddle-point systems arising from the stationary Stokes-Darcy equations in two dimensions, discretized by the Marker-and-Cell (MAC) finite difference method. We analyze the eigenvalue distribution of a few ideal block preconditioners. We then derive practical preconditioners that are based on approximations of Schur complements that arise in a block decomposition of the double saddle-point matrix. We show that including the interface conditions in the preconditioners is key in the pursuit of scalability. Numerical results s…
In this paper, we first propose and analyze a novel mixed-type DG method for the coupled Stokes-Darcy problem on simplicial meshes. The proposed formulation is locally conservative. A mixed-type DG method in conjunction with the stress-velocity formulation is employed for the Stokes equations, where the symmetry of stress is strongly imposed. The staggered DG method is exploited to discretize the Darcy equations. As such, the discrete formulation can be easily adapted to account for the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface conditions without introducing additional variables. Importantly, the conti…
This paper proposes an interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method for Darcy-Stokes-Brinkman interface problems in two and three dimensions. The method uses piecewise linear polynomials for the velocity approximation and piecewise constants for both the velocity gradient and pressure approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains separated by the interface, uses piecewise constants for the numerical traces of velocity on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains, and uses piecewise constants or linear polynomials for the nu…
In this article, we develop a reduced basis method for efficiently solving the coupled Stokes/Darcy equations with parametric internal geometry. To accommodate possible changes in topology, we define the Stokes and Darcy domains implicitly via a phase-field indicator function. In our reduced order model, we approximate the parameter-dependent phase-field function with a discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) that enables affine decomposition of the associated linear and bilinear forms. In addition, we introduce a modification of DEIM that leads to non-negativity preserving approximatio…

We present and discuss a novel approach to deal with conservation properties for the simulation of nonlinear complex porous media flows in the presence of: 1) multiscale heterogeneity structures appearing in the elliptic-pressure-velocity and in the rock geology model, and 2) multiscale wave structures resulting from shock waves and rarefaction interactions from the nonlinear hyperbolic-transport model. For the pressure-velocity Darcy flow problem, we revisit a recent high-order and volumetric residual-based Lagrange multipliers saddle point problem to impose local mass conservation on convex …

In this paper we propose a novel staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Brinkman problem on general quadrilateral and polygonal meshes. The proposed method is robust in the Stokes and Darcy limits, in addition, hanging nodes can be automatically incorporated in the construction of the method, which are desirable features in practical applications. There are three unknowns involved in our formulation, namely velocity gradient, velocity and pressure. Unlike the original staggered DG formulation proposed for the Stokes equations in \cite{KimChung13}, we relax the tangential continuity of…
We consider a coupled model of free-flow and porous medium flow, governed by stationary Stokes and Darcy flow, respectively. The coupling between the two systems is enforced by introducing a single variable representing the normal flux across the interface. The problem is reduced to a system concerning only the interface flux variable, which is shown to be well-posed in appropriately weighted norms. An iterative solution scheme is then proposed to solve the reduced problem such that mass is conserved at each iteration. By introducing a preconditioner based on the weighted norms from the analys…
Fluid flows in coupled systems consisting of a free-flow region and the adjacent porous medium appear in a variety of environmental settings and industrial applications. In many applications, fluid flow is non-parallel to the fluid-porous interface that requires a generalisation of the Beavers-Joseph coupling condition typically used for the Stokes-Darcy problem. Generalised coupling conditions valid for arbitrary flow directions to the interface are recently derived using the theory of homogenisation and boundary layers. The aim of this work is the mathematical analysis of the Stokes-Darcy pr…
