This paper proposes an interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method for Darcy-Stokes-Brinkman interface problems in two and three dimensions. The method uses piecewise linear polynomials for the velocity approximation and piecewise constants for both the velocity gradient and pressure approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains separated by the interface, uses piecewise constants for the numerical traces of velocity on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains, and uses piecewise constants or linear polynomials for the numerical traces of velocity on the interface. Optimal error estimates are derived for the interface-unfitted X-HDG scheme. Numerical experiments are provided to verify the theoretical results and the robustness of the proposed method.
In this paper, we study the "a posteriori" error estimate corresponding to the Brinkman-Darcy-Forchheimer problem. We introduce the variational formulation discretised by using the finite element method. Then, we establish an "a posteriori" error estimation with two types of error indicators related to the discretization and to the linearization. Finally, numerical investigations are shown and discussed.
This paper develops the a priori analysis of a mixed finite element method for the filtration of an incompressible fluid through a non-deformable saturated porous medium with heterogeneous permeability. Flows are governed by the Brinkman--Forchheimer and Darcy equations in the more and less permeable regions, respectively, and the corresponding transmission conditions are given by mass conservation and continuity of momentum. We consider the standard mixed formulation in the Brinkman--Forchheimer domain and the dual-mixed one in the Darcy region, and we impose the continuity of the normal velo…
We propose a block-structured multigrid relaxation scheme for solving the Stokes-Darcy Brinkman equations discretized by the marker and cell scheme. An element-based additive Vanka smoother is used to solve the corresponding shifted Laplacian operator. Using local Fourier analysis, we present the stencil for the additive Vanka smoother and derive an optimal smoothing factor for Vanka-based Braess-Sarazin relaxation for the Stokes-Darcy Brinkman equations. Although the optimal damping parameter is dependent on meshsize and physical parameter, it is very close to one. Numerical results of two-gr…
In this paper we propose and analyze a uniformly robust staggered DG method for the unsteady Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman problem. Our formulation is based on velocity gradient-velocity-pressure and the resulting scheme can be flexibly applied to fairly general polygonal meshes. We relax the tangential continuity for velocity, which is the key ingredient in achieving the uniform robustness. We present well-posedness and error analysis for both the semi-discrete scheme and the fully discrete scheme, and the theories indicate that the error estimates for velocity are independent of pressure. In this paper we propose a novel staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Brinkman problem on general quadrilateral and polygonal meshes. The proposed method is robust in the Stokes and Darcy limits, in addition, hanging nodes can be automatically incorporated in the construction of the method, which are desirable features in practical applications. There are three unknowns involved in our formulation, namely velocity gradient, velocity and pressure. Unlike the original staggered DG formulation proposed for the Stokes equations in \cite{KimChung13}, we relax the tangential continuity of…

In this paper, a strongly mass conservative and stabilizer free scheme is designed and analyzed for the coupled Brinkman-Darcy flow and transport. The flow equations are discretized by using a strongly mass conservative scheme in mixed formulation with a suitable incorporation of the interface conditions. In particular, the interface conditions can be incorporated into the discrete formulation naturally without introducing additional variables. Moreover, the proposed scheme behaves uniformly robust for various values of viscosity. A novel upwinding staggered DG scheme in mixed form is exploite…
We present a novel hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method on unfitted meshes for single-phase Darcy flow in a fractured porous media. In particular we apply the HDG methodology to the recently introduced reinterpreted discrete fracture model (RDFM) [Xu & Yang, 2021 submitted] that use Dirac-$δ$ functions to model both conductive and blocking fractures. Due to the use of Dirac-$δ$ function approach for the fractures, our numerical scheme naturally allows for unfitted meshes with respect to the fractures, which is the major novelty of the proposed scheme. Moreover, the scheme is locall…
The Brinkman equations can be regarded as a combination of the Stokes and Darcy equations which model transitions between the fast flow in channels (governed by Stokes equations) and the slow flow in porous media (governed by Darcy's law). The numerical challenge for this model is the designing of a numerical scheme which is stable for both the Stokes-dominated (high permeability) and the Darcy-dominated (low permeability) equations. In this paper, we solve the Brinkman model in $n$ dimensions ($n = 2, 3$) by using the mixed discontinuous Galerkin (MDG) method, which meets this challenge. This…
In this work we propose a non-dimensionalization approach for the Stokes-Brinkman model for flow in porous media. We study the effect of the dimensionless number found, which will be denoted by A and named as Anna's number, has on the outflow and transition between the Darcy and Stokes regime.
The paper presents a workflow for fast pore-scale simulation of single-phase flow in tight reservoirs typically characterized by low, multiscale porosity. Multiscale porosity implies that the computational domain contains porous voxels (unresolved porosity) in addition to pure fluid voxels. In this case, the Stokes-Brinkman equations govern the flow, with the Darcy term needed to account for the flow in the porous voxels. As the central part of our workflow, robust and efficient solvers for Stokes and Stokes-Brinkman equations are presented. The solvers are customized for low-porosity binary a…
Numerical treatment of the problem of two-dimensional viscous fluid flow in and around circular porous inclusions is considered. The mathematical model is described by Navier-Stokes equation in the free flow domain $Ω_f$ and nonlinear convective Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer equations in porous subdomains $Ω_p$. It is well-known that numerical solutions of the problems in such heterogeneous domains require a very fine computational mesh that resolve inclusions on the grid level. The size alteration of the relevant system requires model reduction techniques. Here, we present a multiscale model red…
In this paper we propose and analyse a new formulation and pointwise divergence-free mixed finite element methods for the numerical approximation of Darcy--Brinkman equations in vorticity--velocity--pressure form, coupled with a transport equation for thermal energy with viscous dissipative effect and mixed Navier-type boundary conditions. The solvability analysis of the continuous and discrete problems is significantly more involved than usual as it hinges on Banach spaces needed to properly control the advective and dissipative terms in the non-isothermal energy balance equation. We proceed …
