In this paper, we study some controllability and observability problems for stochastic systems coupling fourth- and second-order parabolic equations. The main goal is to control both equations with only one controller localized on the drift of the fourth-order equation. We analyze two cases: on one hand, we study the controllability of a linear backward system where the couplings are made only through first-order terms. The key point is to use suitable Carleman estimates for the heat equation and the fourth-order operator with the same weight to deduce an observability inequality for the adjoint system. On the other hand, we study the controllability of a simplified nonlinear coupled model of forward equations. This case, which is well-known to be harder to solve, follows a methodology that has been introduced recently and relies on an adaptation of the well-known source term method in the stochastic setting together with a truncation procedure. This approach gives a new concept of controllability for stochastic systems.
We establish the null controllability for linear stochastic fourth order parabolic equations. Utilizing the duality argument, the null controllability is reduced to the observability for backward fourth order stochastic parabolic equations, and the desired observability estimate is obtained by a new global Carleman estimate. Our Carleman estimate is based on a new fundamental identity for a stochastic fourth order parabolic operator.
This paper studies the controllability problem of a parabolic system of chemotaxis. The local exact controllability to trajectories of the system imposed one control force only is obtained by applying Kakutani's fixed point theorem combined with the null controllability of the associated linearized parabolic system. The control function is shown to be in $L^\infty(Q)$, which is estimated by using the methods of maximal regularity and $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates of parabolic equations.
In this paper, we are concerned with the controllability of a chemotaxis system of parabolic-elliptic type. By linearizing the nonlinear system into two separated linear equations to bypass the obstacle caused by the nonlinear drift term, we establish the local null controllability of the original nonlinear system. The approach is different from the usual way of treating the coupled parabolic systems.
In this paper we study the null controllability of some non diagonalizable degenerate parabolic systems of PDEs, we assume that the diffusion, coupling and controls matrices are constant and we characterize the null controllability by an algebraic condition so called \textit{Kalman's rank} condition.
The distributed null controllability for coupled parabolic systems with non-diagonalizable diffusion matrices with a reduced number of controls has been studied in the case of constant matrices. On the other hand, boundary controllability issues and distributed controllability with non-constant coefficients for this kind of systems is not completely understood. In this paper, we analyze the boundary controllability properties of a class of coupled parabolic systems with non-diagonalizable diffusion matrices in the constant case and the distributed controllability of a 2 x 2 non-diagonalizable …
We study several controllability properties for some semilinear parabolic PDE with a quadratic gradient term. For internal distributed controls, it is shown that the system is approximately and null controllable. The proof relies on the Cole-Hopf transformation. The same approach is used to deal with initial controls.
In this paper, we prove the null controllability of some parabolic-elliptic systems. The control is distributed, locally supported in space and appears only in one PDE. The arguments rely on fixed-point reformulation and suitable Carleman estimates for the solutions to the adjoint system. Under appropriate assumptions, we also prove that the solution can be obtained as the asymptotic limit of some similar parabolic systems.
In this paper we study the boundary controllability for a system of two coupled degenerate/singular parabolic equations with a control acting on only one equation. We analyze both approximate and null boundary controllability properties. Besides, we provide an estimate on the null-control cost. The proofs are based on the use of the moment method by Fattorini and Russell together with some results on biorthogonal families.
The main objective of this paper is to establish the null controllability for the fourth order semilinear parabolic equations with the nonlinearities involving the state and its gradient up to second order. First of all, based on optimal control theory of partial differential equations and global Carleman estimates obtained in \cite{gs} for fourth order parabolic equation with $L^2(Q)$-external force, we establish the global Carleman estimates for the $L^2(Q)$ weak solutions of the same system with a low regularity external term and some linear terms including the derivatives of the state up t…
In this paper, we establish two Carleman estimates for a stochastic degenerate parabolic equation. The first one is for the backward stochastic degenerate parabolic equation with singular weight function. Combining this Carleman estimate and an approximate argument, we prove the null controllability of the forward stochastic degenerate parabolic equation with the gradient term. The second one is for the forward stochastic degenerate parabolic equation with regular weighted function, based on which we obtain the Lipschitz stability for an inverse problem of determining a random source depending…
In this paper we study the controllability of the Keller-Segel system approximating its parabolic-elliptic version. We show that this parabolic system is locally uniform controllable around a constant solution of the parabolic-elliptic system when the control is acting on the component of the chemical.

This paper is concerned with the application of Stackelberg-Nash strategies to control fourth order linear and semi-linear parabolic equations. We assume that the system is acted through a hierarchy of distributed controls: one main control (the leader) that is responsible for an exact controllability property; and a couple of secondary controls (the followers) that minimize two prescribed cost functionals and provides a pair of Nash equilibria for the two prescribed cost functionals. In this paper, we first prove the existence of an associated Nash equilibrium pair corresponding to a hierarch…
In this paper we present a null controllability result for a degenerate semilinear parabolic equation with first order terms. The main result is obtained after the proof of a new Carleman inequality for a degenerate linear parabolic equation with first order terms.
We analyze the averaged controllability properties of random evolution Partial Differential Equations. We mainly consider heat and Schrödinger equations with random parameters, although the problem is also formulated in an abstract frame. We show that the averages of parabolic equations lead to parabolic-like dynamics that enjoy the null-controllability properties of solutions of heat equations in an arbitrarily short time and from arbitrary measurable sets of positive measure. In the case of Schrödinger equations we show that, depending on the probability density governing the random paramete…
In this paper, we analyze the null controllability property for a degenerate parabolic equation involving memory terms with a locally distributed control. We first derive a null controllability result for a nonhomogeneous degenerate heat equation via new Carleman estimates with weighted time functions that do not blow up at t= 0. Then this result is successfully used with a classical fixed point to obtain null controllability for the initial memory system.
In this paper, we apply the hierarchical strategy to a semilinear weakly degenerate parabolic equation involving a gradient term. We use the Stackelberg-Nash strategy with one leader which tries to drive the solution to zero and two followers intended to solve a Nash equilibrium corresponding to a bi-objective optimal control problem. Since the system is semilinear, the functionals are not convex in general. To overcome this difficulty, we first prove the existence and uniqueness of the Nash quasi-equilibrium, which is a weaker formulation of the Nash equilibrium. Next, with additional conditi…
In the discrete setting of one-dimensional finite-differences we prove a Carleman estimate for a semi-discretization of the parabolic operator $\partial_t-\partial_x (c\partial_x)$ where the diffusion coefficient $c$ has a jump. As a consequence of this Carleman estimate, we deduce consistent null-controllability results for classes of semi-linear parabolic equations.
We prove null controllability for linear and semilinear heat equations with dynamic boundary conditions of surface diffusion type. The results are based on a new Carleman estimate for this type of boundary conditions.
We consider a system of two parabolic equations with a forcing term present in one equation and a cubic coupling term in the other one. We prove that the system is locally null controllable.
This paper is concerned with the existence of insensitizing controls for a fourth order semilinear parabolic equation. Here, the initial data is partially unknown, we would like to find controls such that a specific functional is insensitive for small perturbations of the initial data. In general, this kind of problems can be recast as a null controllability problem for a nonlinear cascade system. We will first prove a null controllability result for a linear problem by global Carleman estimates and dual arguments. Then, by virtue of Leray-Schauder's fixed points theorem, we conclude the null …
Let us consider a nonlinear degenerate reaction-diffusion equation with application to climate science. After proving that the solution remains nonnegative at any time, when the initial state is nonnegative, we prove the approximate controllability between nonnegative states at any time via multiplicative controls, that is, using as control the reaction coefficient.
In this paper, we study the global approximate multiplicative controllability for nonlinear degenerate parabolic Cauchy-Neumann problems. First, we will obtain embedding results for weighted Sobolev spaces, that have proved decisive in reaching well-posedness for nonlinear degenerate problems. Then, we show that the above systems can be steered in $L^2$ from any nonzero, nonnegative initial state into any neighborhood of any desirable nonnegative target-state by bilinear piecewise static controls. Moreover, we extend the above result relaxing the sign constraint on the initial date.
The aim of this paper is to perform a Stackelberg strategy to control parabolic equations. We have one control, \textit{the leader}, that is responsible for a null controllability property; additionally, we have a control \textit{the follower} that solves a robust control objective. That means, that we seek for a saddle point of a cost functional. In this way, the follower control is not sensitive to a broad class of external disturbances. As far as we know, the idea of combining robustness with a Stackelberg strategy is new in literature
