Studies of the electronic spectral function in cuprates by Angle-Resolved Photo-Emission Spectroscopy reveal unusual features in the pseudogap phase that persist in the superconducting phase. We address here these observations based on the recently proposed idea that the pseudogap is due to the fractionalization of modulated particle-particle pairs (a Pair Density Wave) into uniform particle-particle and modulated particle-hole pairs. The constraint that appears between these two types of pairs can be seen has an amplitude for the pseudogap energy scale. This constraint directly modify the electronic spectral function in the pseudogap phase. We derive a self-consistent equation for the pseudogap amplitude and show that it leads to the formation of Fermi arcs. The band dispersion obtained in the anti-nodal region is in good agreement with experimental ARPES observations in Pb$_{0.55}$Bi$_{1.5}$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and present a back-bending that goes to the Fermi level as we go away from the antinodal region. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the ARPES spectrum in the pseudogap and in the superconducting state.
Fractionalized Fermi liquids (FL$^\ast$) have been introduced as non-Fermi-liquid metallic phases, characterized by coexisting electron-like charge carriers and local moments which itself form a fractionalized spin liquid. Here we investigate a Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice with compass interactions among the local moments, a concrete model hosting FL$^\ast$ phases based on Kitaev's $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid. We characterize the FL$^\ast$ phases via perturbation theory, and we employ a Majorana-fermion mean-field theory to map out the full phase diagram. Most remarkably we find…
Doping a Mott-insulating $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid can lead to a fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*). Such a phase has several favorable features that make it a candidate for the pseudogap metal for the underdoped cuprates. We focus on a particular, simple $\mathbb{Z}_2$-FL* state which can undergo a confinement transition to a spatially uniform superconductor which is smoothly connected to the `plain vanilla' BCS superconductor with $d$-wave pairing. Such a transition occurs by the condensation of bosonic particles carrying $+e$ charge but no spin (`chargons'). We show that modifying the dispe…

The mysterious pseudo-gap (PG) phase of cuprate superconductors has been the subject of intense investigation over the last thirty years, but without a clear agreement about its origin. Owing to a recent observation in Raman spectroscopy, of a precursor in the charge channel, on top of the well known fact of a precursor in the superconducting channel, we present here a novel idea: the PG is formed through a Higgs mechanism, where two kinds of preformed pairs, in the particle-particle and particle-hole channels, become entangled through a freezing of their global phase. Remarkably, this entangl…
We compare the pole structure of the electronic Green's function obtained by Cluster Dynamical Mean Field Theory to the results from the fractionalized Pair Density Wave idea. In the superconducting phase, we can consider the system in a state with coexistence of Superconducting and Charge order. Writing the Green's function in a way analogous to the previously proposed "hidden-fermions" model from S. Sakai et al (2016) leads to a similar pole structure for the self-energy. The fractionalization of the Pair Density Wave order also describes the pseudogap phase as a superposition of superconduc…
Pairing symmetry plays a central role in the study of superconductivity. It is usually characterized by integer partial-waves, for example, $s$-, $p$-, $d$-waves. In this article, we investigate a new class of topological superconductivity whose gap functions possess a half-odd-integer monopole charge and, therefore, fractionalized half-odd-integer partial-wave symmetry in three dimensions. This exotic pairing occurs between Fermi surfaces of which Chern numbers are differed by an odd integer. The corresponding superconducting gap function is represented by monopole harmonics with half-odd-int…

We use scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize the atomic-scale electronic states induced by a pair of hole dopants in Ca2CuO2Cl2 parent Mott insulator of cuprates. We find that when the two dopants approach each other, the transfer of spectral weight from high energy Hubbard band to low energy in-gap state creates a broad peak and nearly V-shaped gap around the Fermi level. The peak position shows a sudden drop at distance around 4 a0 and then remains almost constant. The in-gap states exhibit peculiar spatial distributions depending on the configuration of the two dopants relative to the …

We develop a theory for light-induced superconductivity in underdoped cuprates in which the competing bond-density wave order is suppressed by driving phonons with light. Close to a bond-density wave instability in a system with a small Fermi surface, such as a fractionalized Fermi liquid, we show that the coupling of electrons to phonons is strongly enhanced at the bond-density wave ordering wavevectors, leading to a strong softening of phonons at these wavevectors. For a model of classical phonons with anharmonic couplings, we show that the combination of strong softening and driving can lea…
It has recently been pointed out that Fermi surfaces can remain even in the superconductors under the symmetric spin-orbit interaction and broken time-reversal symmetry. Using the linear response theory, we study the instability of such systems toward ordering, which is an intrinsic property of the Fermi surfaces. The ordered states are classified into diagonal and offdiagonal ones, each of which respectively indicates the Pomeranchuk instability and Cooper pairing not of original electron but of Bogoliubov particles (bogolons). The corresponding order parameters are expanded by multipole mome…
Cooper's one pair problem is investigated for a 2D lattice in the background of both passive and active Fermi sea in a weakly correlated environment. Boson exchange mechanisms involving excitons as well as phonons are invoked for pairing in the s- wave channel. The important quantities calculated are pairing energy and coherence length as functions of bosonic energy, attracted coupling constant and band filling factor. Comparison of our theoretical results with those from experiments on overdoped cuprate superconductors and other type of theoretical calculations show electronic mechanism to be…
Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study superconductivity that emerges in two extreme cases, from a Fermi liquid phase (LiFeAs) and an incoherent bad-metal phase (FeTe0.55Se0.45). We find that although the electronic coherence can strongly reshape the single-particle spectral function in the superconducting state, it is decoupled from the maximum superconducting pairing amplitude, which shows a universal scaling that is valid for all FeSCs. Our observation excludes pairing scenarios in the BCS and the BEC limit for FeSCs and calls for a universal strong coupling pairing …
We review all symmetry-allowed spin-singlet and spin-triplet superconducting (SC) order parameters in graphene ($s$-wave, $d$-wave, $p$-wave, and $f$-wave) generated by generic onsite, nearest-neighbor (NN), and next-to-nearest-neighbor (NNN) pairing interactions in a tight-binding model. For each pairing channel, we calculate both the band structure and the dependence of the density of states on energy, chemical potential, and on the pairing strength. In particular, we distinguish between nodal superconducting states and fully gapped states and study the dependence of gap closing points on th…
We show that the mean-field resonating valence bond approximation proposed in 1987 by Baskaran, Zou, and Anderson describes gapless charge pair excitations confined to the boundaries of the spinon Brillouin zone. The existence of such pairs accounts for all the essential anomalous electronic properties of cuprates, with superconductivity arising due to the charge drag by the spinon superflow. This mechanism may be relevant to other unconventional superconductors.
Cooper's formalism for fermionic pairing has been revisited considering upto 3rd neighbour hopping terms, firstly with a Fermi liquid like background on a square lattice keeping in mind the overdopped cuprates. Then the whole scheme is repeated with a Marginal Fermi liquid- like background, taking into account the self energy correction of the mobile electrons to include a more realitic density of states in the calculation. Detailed comparison of our theoretical results with those from experiments strongly supports the Marginal Fermi liquid- like character of the normal phase with exciton medi…

研究了以拓扑绝缘体为母体材料的超导拓扑绝缘体的电子性质。本文计算了L。Fu和E. Berg(Phys. Rev. Lett. 105,097001)。
Although correlated electronic-structure calculations explain very well the normal state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, its superconducting symmetry is still unknown. Here we construct the spin and charge fluctuation pairing interactions based on its correlated normal state. Correlations significantly reduce ferromagnetic in favor of antiferromagnetic fluctuations and increase inter-orbital pairing. From the normal-state Eliashberg equations, we find spin-singlet $d$-wave pairing close to magnetic instabilities. Away from these instabilities, where charge fluctuations increase, we find two time-reversal sy…
While it is known that the amplification of the superconducting critical temperature Tc is possible in a system of multiple electronic components in comparison with a single component system, many different road maps for room temperature superconductivity have been proposed for a variety of multicomponent scenarios. Here we focus on the scenario where the first electronic component is assumed to have a vanishing Fermi velocity corresponding to a case of the intermediate polaronic regime, and the second electronic component is in the weak coupling regime with standard high Fermi velocity using …
High-$T_c$ Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in 2D superconducting systems with coupled deep and quasi-flat electronic bands with van Hove singularities
The formation of Cooper pairs, a bound state of two electrons of opposite spin and momenta by exchange of a phonon [1], is a defining feature of conventional superconductivity. In the cuprate high temperature superconductors, even though it has been established that the superconducting state also consists of Cooper pairs, the pairing mechanism remains intensely debated. Here we investigate superconducting pairing in the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ(Bi2212) cuprate by employing spectral functions obtained directly from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments as input to the Bethe-Salpeter gap equat…
