It has recently been pointed out that Fermi surfaces can remain even in the superconductors under the symmetric spin-orbit interaction and broken time-reversal symmetry. Using the linear response theory, we study the instability of such systems toward ordering, which is an intrinsic property of the Fermi surfaces. The ordered states are classified into diagonal and offdiagonal ones, each of which respectively indicates the Pomeranchuk instability and Cooper pairing not of original electron but of Bogoliubov particles (bogolons). The corresponding order parameters are expanded by multipole moments (diagonal order parameter) and multiplet pair amplitudes (offdiagonal order parameter) of original electrons, which are induced by the internal fields arising from bogolons' ordering. While the bogolons' order parameters partially inherit the characters of the original electrons, many order parameter components mix with similar magnitude. Hence there is no clear-cut distinction whether the phase transition is diagonal or offdiagonal ordering in terms of the original electrons. These ordering instabilities inside the superconducting states provide insights into the superconductors which have the second phase transition below the first transition temperature.
We study the competition between a Pomeranchuk instability in the spin channel with angular momentum $\ell=1$ and an attractive interaction, favoring Cooper-pair formation. We found that the superconducting gap strongly suppresses the phase space for the Pomeranchuk instability. We computed a mean-field phase diagram displaying a first order transition between two superconductor phases with different symmetries: p-wave (with spontaneously generated spin-orbit interaction) and s-wave for greater values of the coupling constant. Moreover, we have looked for a possible modulated superconducting p…
We discuss a close relationship between a quasiparticle on the Bogoliubov Fermi surface and an odd-frequency Cooper pair in a superconductor in which a Cooper pair consisting of two j=3/2 electrons forms the pseudospin-quintet even-parity pair potential with breaking time-reversal symmetry. It has been established in a single-band superconductor that a low-energy quasiparticle below the superconducting gap accompanies an odd-frequency Cooper pair. In this paper, we show that an odd-frequency pair characterized by chirality coexists with a quasiparticle on the Bogoliubov Fermi surface. The symm…
The antiferromagnetic ground state of copper oxide Mott insulators is achieved by localizing an electron at each copper atom in real space (r-space). Removing a small fraction of these electrons (hole doping) transforms this system into a superconducting fluid of delocalized Cooper pairs in momentum space (k-space). During this transformation, two distinctive classes of electronic excitations appear. At high energies, the enigmatic 'pseudogap' excitations are found, whereas, at lower energies, Bogoliubov quasi-particles -- the excitations resulting from the breaking of Cooper pairs -- should e…
The Bogoliubov approach to superconductivity provides a strong mathematical support to the wave function ansatz proposed by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer (BCS). Indeed, this ansatz --- with all pairs condensed into the same state --- corresponds to the ground state of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian. Yet, this Hamiltonian only is part of the BCS Hamiltonian. As a result, the BCS ansatz definitely differs from the BCS Hamiltonian ground state. This can be directly shown either through a perturbative approach starting from the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian, or better by analytically solving the BCS Schrödi…
The disorder and interaction effects on Bogoliubov-Fermi surfaces with preserved inversion symmetry are studied for a low-energy effective model coupled to bosonic degrees of freedom. It is shown that the non-ideal Bogoliubov quasiparticles (bogolons) generically induce the odd-frequency pair amplitude which reflects a Cooper pairing at different time. The self-energy of bogolons is mainly contributed by the disorder effects in the low frequency limit as in the usual electron liquid. Depending on the choice of the parameters, there are two kinds of solutions: one is frequency-independent (but …
Centrosymmetric multiband superconductors which break time-reversal symmetry generically have two-dimensional nodes, i.e., Fermi surfaces of Bogoliubov quasiparticles. We show that the coupling of the electrons to the lattice always leads to a weak-coupling instability of such a state towards spontaneous breaking of inversion symmetry at low temperatures. This instability is driven by a Cooper logarithm in the internal energy but the order parameter is not superconducting but distortional. We present a comprehensive symmetry analysis and introduce a measure that allows to compare the strengths…
Exotic quantum phases including topological states and non-Fermi liquids may be realized by quantum states with total angular momentum $j=3/2$, as manifested in HgTe and pyrochlore iridates. Recently, an exotic superconducting state with non-zero density of states of zero energy Bogoliubov (BG) quasiparticles, Bogoliubov Fermi-surface (BG-FS), was also proposed in a centrosymmetric $j=3/2$ system, protected by a Z$_2$ topological invariant. Here, we consider interaction effects of a centrosymmetric BG-FS and demonstrate its instability by using mean-field and renormalization group analysis. Th…
Angle-resolved photoemission on underdoped La$_{1.895}$Sr$_{0.105}$CuO$_4$ reveals that in the pseudogap phase, the dispersion has two branches located above and below the Fermi level with a minimum at the Fermi momentum. This is characteristic of the Bogoliubov dispersion in the superconducting state. We also observe that the superconducting and pseudogaps have the same d-wave form with the same amplitude. Our observations provide direct evidence for preformed Cooper pairs, implying that the pseudogap phase is a precursor to superconductivity.
Perfect Cooper pair splitting is proposed, based on crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) in a p-type semiconductor - superconductor - n-type semiconductor (pSn) junction. The ideal splitting is caused by the energy filtering that is enforced by the bandstructure of the electrodes. The pSn junction is modeled by the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and an extension of the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory beyond the Andreev approximation. Despite a large momentum mismatch, the CAR current is predicted to be large. The proposed straightforward experimental design and the 100% degree of pureness of the n…
We study the interplay between the Zeeman field and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in harmonically trapped Fermi gases loaded into a two-dimensional single-band tight-binding optical lattice. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, we find that the Zeeman field combined with a Rashba SOC gives rise to $(i)$ Fulde-Ferrell-like superfluidity and $(ii)$ skyrmion-like polarization textures near the edges of the system. We also discussed the effects of interaction, temperature, SOC anisotropy and Zeeman field anisotropy on the superfluid ground state and polarization textures.
Noise spectroscopy is a key technique to investigate the nature and dynamics of charge carriers in superconductors. The recently discovered superconducting hybrids with Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces exhibit a particularly intriguing and rich charge dynamics, as their charge carriers consist of both Cooper pairs and an extensive number of Bogoliubov quasiparticles. Motivated by this, we compute the noise spectra of Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces and identify their key signatures in the differential conductance and the Fano factor. Specifically, we consider a semiconductor/superconductor hybrid device wi…
We present a comprehensive theory for Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces in inversion-symmetric superconductors which break time-reversal symmetry. A requirement for such a gap structure is that the electrons posses internal degrees of freedom apart from the spin (e.g., orbital or sublattice indices), which permits a nontrivial internal structure of the Cooper pairs. We develop a general theory for such a pairing state, which we show to be nonunitary. A time-reversal-odd component of the nonunitary gap product is found to be essential for the appearance of Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces. These Fermi surface…
Quasiparticle states around a single vortex in a $p_x\pm i p_y$-wave superconductor are studied on the basis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory, where both charge and current screenings are taken into account. Due to the violation of time reversal symmetry, there are two types of vortices which are distinguished by their winding orientations relative to the angular momentum of the chiral Cooper pair. The BdG solution shows that the charges of the two types of vortices are quite different, reflecting the rotating Cooper pair of the $p_x\pm i p_y$-wave paring state.
Solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we study the spatial structure of odd-frequency s-wave Cooper pair amplitudes at each quantized energy level of vortex bound states in chiral p-wave superconductors. For zero energy Majorana states, the odd-frequency s-wave pair amplitude has the same spatial structure as that of the local density of states even in atomic length scale. This relation also holds in finite energy bound states for single vortex winding anti-parallel to the chirality, but not for parallel vortex winding. The double winding vortex case is also studied.
We derive a nonlinear differential equation for the gap parameter of a superfluid Fermi system by performing a suitable coarse graining of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations throughout the BCS-BEC crossover, with the aim of replacing the time-consuming solution of the original BdG equations by the simpler solution of this novel equation. We perform a favorable numerical test on the validity of this new equation over most of the temperature-coupling phase diagram, by an explicit comparison with the full solution of the original BdG equations for an isolated vortex. We also show that the n…
We study stimulated light scattering off a superfluid Fermi gas of atoms at finite temperature. We derive response function that takes into account vertex correction due to final state interactions; and analyze finite temperature effects on collective and quasiparticle excitations of a uniform superfluid Fermi gas. Light polarization is shown to play an important role in excitations. Our results suggest that it is possible to excite Bogoliubov-Anderson phonon at a large scattering length by light scattering.
Crystalline FeSe is known to display strong nematic order below a weak tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition around $T_s\sim 90$K, and a superconducting transition at $T_c\sim 9K$. Recently, it was shown that electron irradiation, which creates pointlike potential scattering defects, has the surprising effect of enhancing $T_c$ while suppressing $T_s$. Here we discuss a possible scenario for such an effect, which postulates a competition between $s_\pm$ superconductivity and nematic order. The transition to the nematic state is modeled by a mean field theory of a $d$-wave Pomeranchuk i…

Using the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equation, Cooper pairing can be generalized to include contributions from holes as well as particles from the ground state of either an ideal Fermi gas (IFG) or of a BCS many-fermion state. The BCS model interfermion interaction is employed throughout. In contrast to the better-known original Cooper pair problem for either two particles or two holes, the generalized Cooper equation in the IFG case has no real-energy solutions. Rather, it possesses two complex-conjugate solutions with purely imaginary energies. This implies that the IFG ground state is unstable whe…
We uncover the properties of complex tensor (d-wave) superconducting order in three-dimensional Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl semimetals that host pseudospin-3/2 fermions at a fourfold linear band crossing point. Although the general theory of d-wave order was originally developed for materials displaying quadratic band touching, it directly applies to the case of semimetals with linear dispersion, several candidate compounds of which have been discovered experimentally very recently. The spin-3/2 nature of the fermions allows for the formation of spin-2 Cooper pairs which may be described by a comple…
Vortex matter in mesoscopic superconductors is known to be strongly affected by the geometry of the sample. Here we show that in nanoscale superconductors with coherence length comparable to the Fermi wavelength the shape resonances of the order parameter results in an additional contribution to the quantum topological confinement - leading to unconventional vortex configurations. Our Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations in a square geometry reveal a plethora of asymmetric, giant multi-vortex, and vortex-antivortex structures, stable over a wide range of parameters and which are very different fr…
We investigate a non-Hermitian extension of Kitaev chain by considering imaginary $p$-wave pairing amplitudes. The exact solution shows that the phase diagram consists two phases with real and complex \ Bogoliubov-de-gens spectra, associated with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking, which is separated by a hyperbolic exceptional line. The exceptional points (EPs) correspond to a specific Cooper pair state $( 1+c_{k}^{\dagger }c_{-k}^{\dagger }) \left\vert 0\right\rangle $\ with movable $k$ when the parameters vary along the exceptional line. The non-Hermiticity around EP supports resonant generat…
We study the effect of a weak magnetic field on the state of the spins of a pair of electrons forming a Cooper pair in an s-wave superconductor. By perturbatively solving time-dependent Bogoliubov equations up to first order, we obtain the two-particle Green function, and whence the two-electron spin-space density matrix. It appears that up to first order approximation, the spin state of a Cooper pair retains the form of a Werner state. This state is then examined in the sense of quantum correlations, i.e., quantum discord.
At the interface between a superconductor and a ferromagnetic metal spin-singlet Cooper pairs can penetrate into the ferromagnetic part of the heterostructure with an oscillating and decaying spin-singlet Cooper pair density. However, if the interface allows for a spin-mixing effect, equal-spin spin-triplet Cooper pairs can be generated that can penetrate much further into the ferromagnetic part of the heterostructure, known as the long-range proximity effect. Here, we present results of spin-mixing based on self-consistent solutions of the microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations incorporat…
We introduce and study an XY-type model of thermal and quantum phase fluctuations in a two-dimensional correlated lattice d-wave superconductor based on the QED3 effective theory of high temperature superconductors. General features of and selected results obtained within this model were reported earlier in an abbreviated format (Z. Tesanovic, cond-mat/0405235). The model is geared toward describing not only the long distance but also the intermediate lengthscale physics of underdoped cuprates. In particular, we elucidate the dynamical origin and investigate specific features of the Cooper pai…
The effects of a single non-magnetic impurity on superconducting states in the Penson-Kolb-Hubbard model have been analyzed. The investigations have been performed within two steps: (i) the homogeneous system is analysed using the Bogoliubov transformation, whereas (ii) the inhomogeneous system is investigated self-consistent Bogoliubova-de Gennes equations (by exact diagonalization and the kernel polynomial method). We analysed both signs of pair hopping, which correspond to s-wave and $η$-wave superconductivity. Our results show that an enhancement of the local superconducting gap at the imp…
Development of the STM and ARPES spectroscopies enabled to reach the resolution level sufficient for detecting the particle-hole entanglement in superconducting materials. On a quantitative level one can characterize such entanglement in terms of the, so called, Bogoliubov angle which determines to what extent the particles and holes constitute the spatially or momentum resolved excitation spectra. In classical superconductors, where the phase transition is related to formation of the Cooper pairs almost simultaneously accompanied by onset of their long-range phase coherence, the Bogoliubov an…
Since the early days of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory, it has been predicted that a sufficiently large supercurrent can close the energy gap in a superconductor and creates gapless Bogoliubov quasiparticles through the Doppler shift of quasiparticle energy due to the Cooper pair momentum. In this gapless superconducting state, zero-energy quasiparticles reside on a segment of the normal state Fermi surface, while its remaining part is still gapped. The finite density of states of field-induced quasiparticles, known as the Volovik effect, has been observed in tunneling and specific heat meas…
If strong electron-electron interactions between neighboring Fe atoms mediate the Cooper pairing in iron-pnictide superconductors, then specific and distinct anisotropic superconducting energy gaps Δ_i(k) should appear on the different electronic bands i. Here we introduce intra-band Bogoliubov quasiparticle scattering interference (QPI) techniques for determination of Δ_i(k) in such materials, focusing on LiFeAs. We identify the three hole-like bands assigned previously as γ, α_2 and α_1, and we determine the anisotropy, magnitude and relative orientations of their Δ_i(k). These measurements …
We survey the use of spectroscopic imaging STM to probe the electronic structure of underdoped cuprates. Two distinct classes of electronic states are observed in both the d-wave superconducting (dSC) and the pseudogap (PG) phases. The first class consists of the dispersive Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations of a homogeneous d-wave superconductor, existing below a lower energy scale E=Delta0. We find that the Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference signatures of delocalized Cooper pairing are restricted to a k-space arc which terminates near the lines connecting k=\pm(pi/a0,0) to k=\pm(pi/a0).…
The possible symmetries of the superconducting pair amplitude is a consequence of the fermionic nature of the Cooper pairs. For spin-$1/2$ systems this leads to the $\mathcal{SPOT}=-1$ classification of superconductivity, where $\mathcal{S}$, $\mathcal{P}$, $\mathcal{O}$, and $\mathcal{T}$ refer to the exchange operators for spin, parity, orbital, and time between the paired electrons. However, this classification no longer holds for higher spin fermions, where each electron also possesses a finite orbital angular momentum strongly coupled with the spin degree of freedom, giving instead a cons…
We review efforts to unify both the Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) pictures of superconductivity. We have finally achieved this in terms of a "\textit{complete} boson-fermion (BF) model" (CBFM) that reduces in special cases to all the main continuum (as opposed to "spin") statistical theories of superconductivity. Our BF model is "complete" in the sense that not only two-electron (2e) but also two-hole (2h) Cooper pairs (CPs) are allowed in arbitrary proportions. In contrast, BCS-Bogoliubov theory--which can also be considered as the theory of a mixtu…
We provide a quasi-one-dimensional model which can support a pair-density-wave (PDW) state, in which the superconducting (SC) order parameter modulates periodically in space, with gapless Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations. The model consists of an array of strongly-interacting one-dimensional systems, where the one-dimensional systems are coupled to each other by local interactions and tunneling of the electrons and Cooper pairs between them. Within the interchain mean-field theory, we find several SC states from the model, including a conventional uniform SC state, PDW SC state, and a coex…
We study the collective excitation and stability of superfluid Fermi gases flowing with a constant velocity in three-dimensional free space. In particular, we investigate a possible gapless superfluid state induced by the superflow using the mean-field theory and the generalized random-phase approximation (GRPA). For weak attractive interactions, we find that the mean-field superfluid order parameter can take a nonzero value even after the superflow velocity exceeds the threshold for the onset of Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations. Since the Cooper pairs are only partially broken by the quas…
Inclusion of pairing fluctuations in the differential equation for the gap parameter for superfluid fermions in the presence of nontrivial spatial constraints
The properties are considered in detail of a non-local (integral) equation for the superconducting gap parameter, which is obtained by a coarse-graining procedure applied to the Bogoliubov-deGennes (BdG) equations over the whole coupling-vs-temperature phase diagram associated with the superfluid phase. It is found that the limiting size of the coarse-graining procedure, which is dictated by the range of the kernel of this integral equation, corresponds to the size of the Cooper pairs over the whole coupling-vs-temperature phase diagram up to the critical temperature, even when Cooper pairs tu…
Cooper pairs in chiral superfluids carry quantized units of relative orbital angular momentum (OAM). Various predictions of the intrinsic OAM density or the macroscopic OAM of a two-dimensional chiral superfluid differ by several orders of magnitude, which constitute the so-called Angular Momentum Paradox. Following several previous studies, we substantiate the semiclassical Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory of the single-particle edge current and OAM in two-dimensional chiral superfluids in the BCS limit. The analysis provides a simple intuitive understanding for the vanishing of OAM for a non-p-wa…
The interplay between quantum Hall states and Cooper pairs is usually hindered by the suppression of the superconducting state due to the strong magnetic fields needed to observe the quantum Hall effect. From this point of view graphene is special since it allows the creation of strong pseudo-magnetic fields due to strain. We show that in a Josephson junction made of strained graphene, Cooper pairs will diffuse into the strained region. The pair correlation function will be sub-lattice polarized due to the polarization of the local density of states in the zero pseudo-Landau level. We uncover …
Pairing correlation of Cooper pair is a fundamental property of multi-fermion interacting systems. For nucleons, two modes of the Cooper-pair coupling may exist, namely of $S_{12}=0$ with $L_{12}=0$ (spin-singlet s-wave) and $S_{12}=1$ with $L_{12}=1$ (spin-triplet p-wave). In nuclear physics, it has been an open question whether the spin-singlet or spin-triplet coupling is dominant, as well as how to measure their role. We investigate a relation between the magnetic-dipole (M1) excitation of nuclei and the pairing modes within the framework of relativistic nuclear energy-density functional (R…
We use the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze the effects of rotation on the ground state phases of harmonically trapped Fermi gases, under the assumption that quantized vortices are not excited. We find that the rotation breaks Cooper pairs that are located near the trap edge, and that this leads to a phase separation between the nonrotating superfluid (fully paired) atoms located around the trap center and the rigidly rotating normal (nonpaired) atoms located towards the trap edge, with a coexistence (partially paired) region in between. Furthermore, we show that the superfluid phase …
