We study the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}_d(\mathbb{A}^\infty)$ from an $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopical viewpoint and obtain applications to algebraic K-theory. We show that the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}_d(\mathbb{A}^\infty)$ is $\mathbb{A}^1$-equivalent to the Grassmannian of $(d-1)$-planes in $\mathbb{A}^\infty$. We then describe the $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy type of $\mathrm{Hilb}_d(\mathbb{A}^n)$ in a range, for $n$ large compared to $d$. For example, we compute the integral cohomology of $\mathrm{Hilb}_d(\mathbb{A}^n)(\mathbb{C})$ in a range. We also deduce that the forgetful map $\mathrm{FFlat}\to\mathrm{Vect}$ from the moduli stack of finite locally free schemes to that of finite locally free sheaves is an $\mathbb{A}^1$-equivalence after group completion. This implies that the moduli stack $\mathrm{FFlat}$, viewed as a presheaf with framed transfers, is a model for the effective motivic spectrum $\mathrm{kgl}$ representing algebraic K-theory. Combining our techniques with the recent work of Bachmann, we obtain Hilbert scheme models for the $\mathrm{kgl}$-homology of smooth proper schemes over a perfect field.
We give a linear algebraic and a monadic descriptions of the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine space of dimension $n$ which naturally extends Nakajima's representation of the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. As an application of our ideas and recent results from the literature on commuting matrices, we show that the Hilbert scheme of $c$ points on $(\C^3)$ is irreducible for $c\le 10$.
The cohomology of the Hilbert schemes of points on smooth projective surfaces can be approached both with vertex algebra tools and equivariant tools. Using the first tool, we study the existence and the structure of universal formulas for the Chern classes of the tangent bundle over the Hilbert scheme of points on a projective surface. The second tool leads then to nice generating formulas in the particular case of the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane.
Let k be a field. Denote by Spc(k)_* the unstable, pointed motivic homotopy category and by Omega_Gm: Spc(k)_* \to Spc(k)_* the Gm-loops functor. For a k-group G, denote by Gr_G the affine Grassmannian of G. If G is isotropic reductive, we provide a canonical motivic equivalence Omega_Gm G = Gr_G. If k is perfect, we use this to compute the motive M(Omega_Gm G) in DM(k, Z).
The quotient of a finite-dimensional vector space by the action of a finite subgroup of automorphisms is usually a singular variety. Under appropriate assumptions, the McKay correspondence relates the geometry of nice resolutions of singularities and the representations of the group. For the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane, we study how different correspondences (McKay, dual McKay and multiplicative McKay) are related to each other.
The Hilbert scheme of $n$ points in the affine plane contains the open subscheme parametrizing $n$ distinct points in the affine plane, and the closed subscheme parametrizing ideals of codimension $n$ supported at the origin of the affine plane. Both schemes admit Białynicki-Birula decompositions into moduli spaces of ideals with prescribed lexicographic Gröbner deformations. We show that both decompositions are stratifications in the sense that the closure of each stratum is a union of certain other strata. We show that the corresponding two partial orderings on the set of of monomial ideals …
In this paper we study certain homogeneous spaces, which we call generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties. The main aim is to characterise the canonical divisor of generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties in terms of group representations. Affine Stiefel algebraic varieties and in particular $S^{n}$ are two special cases of the generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties.
We show that the cohomology ring of Hilbert scheme of $n$-points in the affine plane is isomorphic to the coordinate ring of $\mathbb{G}_{m}$-fixed point scheme of the $n$-th symmetric product of $\mathbb{C}^{2}$ for a natural $\mathbb{G}_{m}$-action on it. This result can be seen as an analogue of a theorem of DeConcini, Procesi and Tanisaki on a description of the cohomology ring of Springer fiber of type A.
Affine difference algebraic groups are a generalization of affine algebraic groups obtained by replacing algebraic equations with algebraic difference equations. We show that the isomorphism theorems from abstract group theory have meaningful analogs for these groups and we establish a Jordan-Hölder type theorem that allows us to decompose any affine difference algebraic group into almost-simple affine difference algebraic groups. We also characterize almost-simple affine difference algebraic groups via almost-simple affine algebraic groups.
We analyze the question of which motivic homotopy types admit smooth schemes as representatives. We show that given a pointed smooth affine scheme $X$ and an embedding into affine space, the affine deformation space of the embedding gives a model for the ${\mathbb P}^1$ suspension of $X$; we also analyze a host of variations on this observation. Our approach yields many examples of ${\mathbb A}^1$-$(n-1)$-connected smooth affine $2n$-folds and strictly quasi-affine ${\mathbb A}^1$-contractible smooth schemes.
For any connected reductive group $G$ over $\mathbb{C}$, we revisit Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson's description of the torus equivariant Borel-Moore homology of affine Springer fibers $\mathrm{Sp}_γ\subset \mathrm{Gr}_G$, where $γ=at^d$, and $a$ is a regular semisimple element in the Lie algebra of $G$. In the case $G = GL_n$, we relate the equivariant cohomology of $\mathrm{Sp}_γ$ to Haiman's work on the isospectral Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. We also explain the connection to the HOMFLY homology of $(n, dn)$-torus links, and formulate a conjecture describing the homology of the Hilb…
Affine rotation surfaces are a generalization of the well-known surfaces of revolution. Affine rotation surfaces arise naturally within the framework of affine differential geometry, a field started by Blaschke in the first decades of the past century. Affine rotations are the affine equivalents of Euclidean rotations, and include certain shears as well as Euclidean rotations. Affine rotation surfaces are surfaces invariant under affine rotations. In this paper, we analyze several properties of algebraic affine rotation surfaces and, by using some notions and results from affine differential g…
We observe algebraic derivations on an affine domain B defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, which are called locally finite derivations in commutative and non-commutative contexts in other references. We observe the graded ring structure which the algebraic derivation defines on B, and give characterizations of a polynomial ring in two variables in terms of algebraic derivations.
We classify commutative algebraic monoid structures on normal affine surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The answer is given in two languages: comultiplications and Cox coordinates. The result follows from a more general classification of commutative monoid structures of rank 0, n-1 or n on a normal affine variety of dimension n.
Let $X$ be a smooth affine algebraic variety over the field of complex numbers which is contractible. Then every algebraic $G$-torsor on $X$ is algebraically trivial if $G$ is a semi-simple algebraic group. We also show that if $X$ is a smooth affine algebraic variety such that $Ω^1_X$ is trivial and $X$ is topologically simply connected with $H^i(X,{\mathbb Z})=0$ for $i=1,2$ and $3$, then every algebraic $G$-torsor on $X$ is algebraically trivial for a semi-simple algebraic group $G$.
We prove that the Picard group of a connected affine algebraic group $G$ is isomorphic to the fundamental group of the derived subgroup of the reductive algebraic group $G/{\mathscr R}_u(G)$, where ${\mathscr R}_u(G)$ is the unipotent radical of $G$.
We extend the Altmann-Hausen presentation of normal affine algebraic C-varieties endowed with effective torus actions to the real setting. In particular, we focus on actions of quasi-split real tori, in which case we obtain a simpler presentation.
We introduce the notion of algebraic volume density property for affine algebraic manifolds and prove some important basic facts about it, in particular that it implies the volume density property. The main results of the paper are producing two big classes of examples of Stein manifolds with volume density property. One class consists of certain affine modifications of $\C^n$ equipped with a canonical volume form, the other is the class of all Linear Algebraic Groups equipped with the left invariant volume form.
For the coordinate algebras of connected affine algebraic groups, we explore the problem of finding a presentation by generators and relations canonically determined by the group structure.
Let $\AAutH (X)$ be the subgroup of the group $\AutH (X)$ of holomorphic automorphisms of a normal affine algebraic surface $X$ generated by elements of flows associated with complete algebraic vector fields. Our main result is a classification of all normal affine algebraic surfaces $X$ quasi-homogeneous under $\AAutH (X)$ in terms of the dual graphs of the boundaries $\bX \setminus X$ of their SNC-completions $\bX$.
A connected component of an affine algebraic group is called periodic if all its elements have finite order. We give a characterization of periodic components in terms of automorphisms with finite number of fixed points. It is also discussed which connected groups have finite extensions with periodic components. The results are applied to the study of the normalizer of a maximal torus in a simple algebraic group.
For ring of differential operators on smooth affine algebraic variety over perfect field of prime characteristic a set of algebra generators and a set of defining relations are found explicitly.
Let $K$ be a complete non-trivially valued non-Archimedean field. Given an algebraic group over $K$ on which every regular function is constant, any rigid analytic function is shown to be constant too. It follows that an algebraic group over $K$ is affine if and only if the associated $K$-analytic space is Stein; that is, rigid analytic embeddings of it in an affine space may always be chosen to be given by algebraic functions. Arguably curiously, the corresponding statement over the complex numbers is false.
We study commutative associative polynomial operations $\mathbb{A}^n\times\mathbb{A}^n\to\mathbb{A}^n$ with unit on the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A classification of such operations is obtained up to dimension 3. Several series of operations are constructed in arbitrary dimension. Also we explore a connection between commutative algebraic monoids on affine spaces and additive actions on toric varieties.
We impose a rather unknown algebraic structure called a `hyperstructure' to the underlying space of an affine algebraic group scheme. This algebraic structure generalizes the classical group structure and is canonically defined by the structure of a Hopf algebra of global sections. This paper partially generalizes the result of A.Connes and C.Consani
For a closed real algebraic plane affine curve dividing its complexification and equipped with a complex orientation, the Whitney number is expressed in terms of behavior of its complexification at infinity.
By an exotic algebraic structure on the affine space ${\bf C}^n$ we mean a smooth affine algebraic variety which is diffeomorphic to ${\bf R}^{2n}$ but not isomorphic to ${\bf C}^n$. This is a survey of the recent developement on the subject, which emphasizes its analytic aspects and points out some open problems.
We say that an algebraic group $G$ over a field is anti-affine if every regular function on $G$ is constant. We obtain a classification of these groups, with applications to the structure of algebraic groups in positive characteristics, and to the construction of many counterexamples to Hilbert's fourteenth problem.
Formulated problems concern the following topics: (1) Birationally nonequivalent linear actions; (2) Cayley degrees of simple algebraic groups; (3) Singularities of two-dimensional quotients.
We show that the Hilbert functor of points on an arbitrary separated algebraic stack is an algebraic space. We also show the algebraicity of the Hilbert stack of points on an algebraic stack and the algebraicity of the Weil restriction of an algebraic stack along a finite flat morphism. For the latter two results, no separation assumptions are necessary.
The affine line minus one point is the underlying space of the algebraic torus of dimension one. However the fibration of an affine algebraic threefold by the affine line minus one point is not always the quotient morphism of the threefold by the algebraic torus. We investigate the structure of affine algebraic threefolds having fibrations by the affine line minus one point. Our results cover not only algebro-geometric but also topological properties of the threefolds. We also consider when the fibration by the affine line minus one point becomes the quotient morphism by an algebraic torus of …
This article can be seen as a sequel to the first author's article ``Chern classes of the tangent bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane'', where he calculates the total Chern class of the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane by proving a result on the existence of certain universal formulas expressing characteristic classes on the Hilbert schemes in term of Nakajima's creation operators. The purpose of this work is (at least) two-fold. First of all, we clarify the notion of ``universality'' of certain formulas about the cohomology of the Hilbert schemes by definin…
We show that Hilbert schemes of planar curve singularities and their parabolic variants can be interpreted as certain generalized affine Springer fibers for $GL_n$, as defined by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. Using a generalization of affine Springer theory for Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima's Coulomb branch algebras, we construct a rational Cherednik algebra action on the homology of the Hilbert schemes, and compute it in examples. Along the way, we generalize to the parahoric setting the recent construction of Hilburn-Kamnitzer-Weekes, which may be of independent interest. In the spherical cas…
We introduce a functor $\mathfrak{M}:\mathbf{Alg}\times\mathbf{Alg}^\mathrm{op}\rightarrow\mathrm{pro}\text{-}\mathbf{Alg}$ constructed from representations of $\mathrm{Hom}_\mathbf{Alg}(A,B\otimes ? )$. As applications, the following items are introduced and studied: (i) Analogue of the functor $π_0$ for algebras and affine schemes. (ii) Cotype of Weibel's concept of strict homotopization. (iii) A homotopy invariant intrinsic singular cohomology theory for affine schemes with cup product. (iv) Some extensions of $\mathbf{Alg}$ that are enriched over idempotent semigroups. (v) Classifying homo…
These notes are based on the lecture courses given at the Ruhr-Universit{ä}t-Bochum (03--08.02.1997) and at the Universit{é} Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, 08-12.01.1996).
Let $Y$ be the underlying variety of a connected affine algebraic group. We prove that two embeddings of the affine line $\mathbb{C}$ into $Y$ are the same up to an automorphism of $Y$ provided that $Y$ is not isomorphic to a product of a torus $(\mathbb{C}^\ast)^k$ and one of the three varieties $\mathbb{C}^3$, $\operatorname{SL}_2$, and $\operatorname{PSL}_2$.
We generalize to the super context, the known fact that if an affine algebraic group $G$ over a commutative ring $k$ acts freely (in an appropriate sense) on an affine scheme $X$ over $k$, then the dur sheaf $X\tilde{\tilde{/}}G$ of $G$-orbits is an affine scheme in the following two cases: (I) $G$ is finite; (II) $k$ is a field, and $G$ is linearly reductive. An emphasize is put on the more difficult generalization in the second case; the replaced assumption then is that an affine algebraic super-group $G$ over an arbitrary field has an integral. Those super-groups which satisfy the assumptio…
Using the theory infinity-categories we construct derived (dg-)categories of regular, holonomic D-modules and algebraically constructible sheaves on a complex smooth algebraic stack. We construct a natural infinity-categorical equivalence between these two categories generalising the classical Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.
For a smooth manifold $X$ equipped with a volume form, let $\dL$ be the Lie algebra of volume preserving smooth vector fields on $X$. A. Lichnerowicz proved that the abelianization of $\dL$ is a finite-dimensional vector space, and that its dimension depends only on the topology of $X$. In this paper we provide analogous results for some classical examples of non-singular complex affine algebraic varieties that admit a nowhere-zero algebraic form of top degree (which plays the role of a volume form).
In this paper we generalize the algebraic density property to not necessarily smooth affine varieties relative to some closed subvariety containing the singular locus. This property implies the remarkable approximation results for holomorphic automorphisms of the Andersén-Lempert theory. We show that an affine toric variety X satisfies this algebraic density property relative to a closed T-invariant subvariety Y if and only if X-Y is different from T. For toric surfaces we are able to classify those which posses a strong version of the algebraic density property (relative to the singular locus…
Hilbert's ternary quartic theorem states that every nonnegative degree 4 homogeneous polynomial in three variables can be written as a sum of three squares of homogeneous quadratic polynomials. We give a linear-algebraic approach to Hilbert's theorem by showing that a structured cone of positive semidefinite matrices is generated by rank 1 elements.
In this article, we shall discuss the solution to the Zariski Cancellation Problem in positive characteristic, various approaches taken so far towards the possible solution in characteristic zero, and several other questions related to this problem.
We introduce the notion of relation type of an affine algebra and prove that it is well defined by using the Jacobi-Zariski exact sequence of André-Quillen homology. In particular, the relation type is an invariant of an affine algebraic variety. Also as a consequence of the invariance, we show that in order to calculate the relation type of an ideal in a polynomial ring one can reduce the problem to trinomial ideals. When the relation type is at least two, the extreme equidimensional components play no role. This leads to the non existence of affine algebras of embedding dimension three and r…
This is an expended and revised version of the preprint "Schematization of homotopy types". The purpose of this work is to introduce a notion of \emph{affine stacks}, which is a homotopy version of the notion of affine schemes, and to give several applications in the context of algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. As a first application we show how affine stacks can be used in order to give a new point of view (and new proofs) on rational and $p$-adic homotopy theory. This gives a first solution to A. Grothendieck's \emph{schematization problem} described in \cite{gr}. We also use affine…
Work of Laurent and Sarnak, following a conjecture of Lang, shows that the number of torsion points of order n on an algebraic subset of an affine complex torus is polynomial periodic. In this paper, we find bounds on the degree and period of this number as a function of n. Some examples, including the number of n torsion points on Fermat curves, are computed to illustrate the methods.
Let $X$ be a connected affine homogenous space of a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\C$. (1) If $X$ is different from a line or a torus we show that the space of all algebraic vector fields on $X$ coincides with the Lie algebra generated by complete algebraic vector fields on $X$. (2) Suppose that $X$ has a $G$-invariant volume form $ω$. We prove that the space of all divergence-free (with respect to $ω$) algebraic vector fields on $X$ coincides with the Lie algebra generated by divergence-free complete algebraic vector fields on $X$ (including the cases when $X$ is a line or a torus). The pr…
We present a restricted version of some affine Jacobi's residue formula (on an affine algebraic variety) with applications to higher dimensional (and affine) analogues of Wood's (or Reiss's) relations about the interpolation of pieces of analytic manifolds. We also compare algebraic and analytic constructions of residue currents along analytic cycles and sketch some of their main properties. This work extend previous work of the authors in the affine space.
In this first work dedicated to the generalisation of classic algebraic geometry to non algebraically closed fields and axiomatisable classes of fields, we develop the foundations for equiresidual algebraic geometry (EQAG), i.e. algebraic geometry over any commutative field $k$, algebraically closed or not. This is possible thanks to the existence in non algebraically closed fields of many normic forms, i.e. homogeneous polynomials with no non-trivial zero rational in $k$, and relies on an equiresidual generalisation of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz and the Jacobson radical in finitely presented $…
