Consider the heat equation with a nonlinear boundary condition $$ \partial_t u=Δu,\quad x\in{\bf R}^N_+,\,\,\,t>0,\qquad \partial_νu=u^p, \quad x\in\partial{\bf R}^N_+,\,\,\,t>0,\qquad u(x,0)=κψ(x),\quad x\in D:=\overline{{\bf R}^N_+}, $$ where $N\ge 1$, $p>1$, $κ>0$ and $ψ$ is a nonnegative measurable function in ${\bf R}^N_+ :=\{y\in{\bf R}^N:y_N>0 \}$. Let us denote by $T(κψ)$ the life span of solutions to this problem. We investigate the relationship between the singularity of $ψ$ at the origin and $T(κψ)$ for sufficiently large $κ>0$ and the relationship between the behavior of $ψ$ at the space infinity and $T(κψ)$ for sufficiently small $κ>0$. Moreover, we give an optimal estimate to $T(κψ)$, as $κ\to\infty$ or $κ\to+0$.
We obtain new estimates for the existence time of the maximal solutions to the nonlinear heat equation $\partial_tu-Δu=|u|^αu,\;α>0$ with initial values in Lebesgue, weighted Lebesgue spaces or measures. Non-regular, sign-changing, as well as non polynomial decaying initial data are considered. The proofs of the lower-bound estimates of life-span are based on the local construction of solutions. The proofs of the upper-bounds exploit a well-known necessary condition for the existence of nonnegative solutions. In addition, we establish new results for life-span using dilation methods and we giv…
This paper is concerned about the lifespan estimate to the Cauchy problem of semilinear damped wave equations with the Fujita critical exponent in high dimensions$(n\geq 4)$. We establish the sharp upper bound of the lifespan in the following form \begin{equation}\nonumber\\ \begin{aligned} T(\varepsilon)\leq \exp(C\varepsilon^{-\frac 2n}), \end{aligned} \end{equation} by using the heat kernel as the test function.
The open question, which seems to be also the final part, in terms of studying the Cauchy problem for the weakly coupled system of damped wave equations or reaction-diffusion equations, is so far known as the sharp lifespan estimates in the critical case. In this paper, we mainly investigate lifespan estimates for solutions to the weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations in the critical case. By using a suitable test function method associated with nonlinear differential inequalities, we catch upper bound estimates for the lifespan. Moreover, we establish polynomial-logarithmi…
We consider the initial value problem for the semilinear wave equation with time-dependent effective damping. The interest is the behavior of lifespan of solutions in view of the asymptotic profile of the damping as $t\to \infty$. The result of this paper is the sharp lifespan estimates of blowup solutions for general time-dependent damping including threshold cases between effective and overdamping.
The purpose of this article is to establish bounds from below for the life span of regular solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, whichinvolve norms not only of the initial data, but also of nonlinear functions of the initial data. We provide examples showing that those bounds are significant improvements to the one provided by the classical fixed point argument. One of the important ingredients is the use of a scale-invariant energy estimate.
Let $T_ε$ be the lifespan for the solution to the Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a power nonlinearity $λ|u|^{2θ/d}u$ ($λ\in \mathbb{C}$, $0<θ<1$) and the initial data in the form $εφ(x)$. We provide a sharp lower bound estimate for $T_ε$ as $ε\to +0$ which can be written explicitly by $λ$, $d$, $θ$, $φ$ and $ε$. This is an improvement of the previous result by H.Sasaki [Adv. Diff. Eq. 14 (2009), 1021--1039].
This paper is devoted to a proof of the conjecture in Takamura(2015) on the lower bound of the lifespan of solutions to semilinear wave equations in two space dimensions. The result is divided into two cases according to the total integral of the initial speed.
The blow up problem of the semilinear scale-invariant damping wave equation with critical Strauss type exponent is investigated. The life span is shown to be: $T(\varepsilon)\leq C\exp(\varepsilon^{-2p(p-1)})$ when $p=p_S(n+μ)$ for $0<μ<\frac{n^2+n+2}{n+2}$. This result completes our previous study \cite{Tu-Lin} on the sub-Strauss type exponent $p<p_S(n+μ)$. Our novelty is to construct the suitable test function from the modified Bessel function. This approach might be also applied to the other type damping wave equations.

We consider the following semilinear wave equation with time-dependent damping. \begin{align} \tag{NLDW} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \partial_t^2 u - Δu + b(t)\partial_t u = |u|^{p}, & (t,x) \in [0,T) \times \mathbb{R}^n, \\ u(0,x)=\varepsilon u_0(x), u_t(0,x)=\varepsilon u_1(x), & x \in \mathbb{R}^n, \end{array} \right. \end{align} where $n \in \mathbb{N}$, $p>1$, $\varepsilon>0$, and $b(t)\thickapprox (t+1)^{-β}$ with $β\in [-1,1)$. It is known that small data blow-up occurs when $1<p< p_F$ and, on the other hand, small data global existence holds when $p>p_F$, where $p_F:=1+2/n$ is the Fujita…
In this paper we first study partial regularity of weak solutions to the initial boundary value problem for the system $-\mbox{div}\left[(I+\mathbf{m}\otimes \mathbf{m})\nabla p\right]=S(x),\ \ \partial_t\mathbf{m}-D^2Δ\mathbf{m}-E^2(\mathbf{m}\cdot\nabla p)\nabla p+|\mathbf{m}|^{2(γ-1)}\mathbf{m}=0$, where $S(x)$ is a given function and $D, E, γ$ are given numbers. This problem has been proposed as a PDE model for biological transportation networks. Mathematically, it seems to have a connection to a conjecture by De Giorgi \cite{DE}. Then we investigate the life-span of classical solutions. O…
In this paper we study a system of partial differential equations which models lithium-ion batteries. The system describes the conservation of Lithium and conservation of charges in the solid and electrolyte phases, together with the conservation of energy. The mathematical challenge is due to the fact that the reaction terms in the system involve the hyperbolic sine function along with possible degeneracy in one of the high order terms. We obtain a local existence assertion for the initial boundary problem for the system which offers insight into how long a battery can last.
We study semilinear damped wave equations with power nonlinearity $|u|^p$ and initial data belonging to Sobolev spaces of negative order $\dot{H}^{-γ}$. In the present paper, we obtain a new critical exponent $p=p_{\mathrm{crit}}(n,γ):=1+\frac{4}{n+2γ}$ for some $γ\in(0,\frac{n}{2})$ and low dimensions in the framework of Soblev spaces of negative order. Precisely, global (in time) existence of small data Sobolev solutions of lower regularity is proved for $p>p_{\mathrm{crit}}(n,γ)$, and blow-up of weak solutions in finite time even for small data if $1<p<p_{\mathrm{crit}}(n,γ)$. Furthermore, …
We provide a new lower bound for the life span of solutions to the Kirchhoff equation for which the initial data belongs to the Gevrey space. This lower bound strictly improves the classical one in the case when the frequency spectrum of the initial data is concentrated at the origin.
In this paper we investigate the stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equations perturbed by linear multiplicative Gaussian noise of convolution type by transformation to random PDEs. We are not interested in the regularity of the initial data. We focus on obtaining bounds from below for the life span associated with regular initial data. The key point of the proof is the fixed point argument.
We study the effect of the rotation on the life-span of solutions to the $3D$ hydrostatic Euler equations with rotation and the inviscid Primitive equations (PEs) on the torus. The space of analytic functions appears to be the natural space to study the initial value problem for the inviscid PEs with general initial data, as they have been recently shown to exhibit Kelvin-Helmholtz type instability. First, for a short interval of time that is independent of the rate of rotation $|Ω|$, we establish the local well-posedness of the inviscid PEs in the space of analytic functions. In addition, tha…
We consider the gravity-capillary water waves equations for a bi-dimensional fluid with a periodic one-dimensional free surface. We prove a rigorous reduction of this system to Birkhoff normal form up to cubic degree. Due to the possible presence of 3-waves resonances for general values of gravity, surface tension and depth, such normal form may be not trivial and exhibit a chaotic dynamics (Wilton-ripples). Nevertheless we prove that for all the values of gravity, surface tension and depth, initial data that are of size $ε$ in a sufficiently smooth Sobolev space lead to a solution that remain…
It is well-known that the life span of solutions to Kirchhoff equations tends to infinity when initial data tend to zero. These results are usually referred to as almost global existence, at least in a neighborhood of the null solution. Here we extend this result by showing that the life span of solutions is lower semicontinuous, and in particular it tends to infinity whenever initial data tend to some limiting datum that originates a global solution. We also provide an estimate from below for the life span of solutions when initial data are close to some of the classes of data for which globa…
In this manuscript, a sharp lifespan estimate of solutions to semilinear classical damped wave equation is investigated in one dimensional case, when the sum of initial position and speed is $0$ pointwisely. Especially, an extension of lifespan is shown in this case. Moreover, existence of some global solutions are obtained by a direct computation.
This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial value problem of semilinear wave equation with critical space-dependent damping term (DW:$V$). The main result of the present paper is to give a solution of the problem and to provide a sharp estimate for lifespan for such a solution when $\frac{N}{N-1}<p\leq p_S(N+V_0)$, where $p_S(N)$ is the Strauss exponent for (DW:$0$). The main idea of the proof is due to the technique of test functions for (DW:$0$) originated by Zhou--Han (2014, MR3169791). Moreover, we find a new threshold value $V_0=\frac{(N-1)^2}{N+1}$ for the coefficient o…
In this paper we prove local existence of solutions to the nonlinear heat equation $u_t = Δu +a |u|^αu, \; t\in(0,T),\; x=(x_1,\,\cdots,\, x_N)\in {\mathbb R}^N,\; a = \pm 1,\; α>0;$ with initial value $u(0)\in L^1_{\rm{loc}}\left({\mathbb R}^N\setminus\{0\}\right)$, anti-symmetric with respect to $x_1,\; x_2,\; \cdots,\; x_m$ and $|u(0)|\leq C(-1)^m\partial_{1}\partial_{2}\cdot \cdot \cdot \partial_{m}(|x|^{-γ})$ for $x_1>0,\; \cdots,\; x_m>0,$ where $C>0$ is a constant, $m\in \{1,\; 2,\; \cdots,\; N\},$ $0<γ<N$ and $0<α<2/(γ+m).$ This gives a local existence result with highly singular initi…
This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial value problem of semilinear wave equation with critical time-dependent damping term (DW). The result is the sharp upper bound of lifespan of solution with respect to the small parameter $\ep$ when $p_F(N)\leq p\leq p_0(N+μ)$, where $p_F(N)$ denotes the Fujita exponent for the nonlinear heat equations and $p_0(n)$ denotes the Strauss exponent for nonlinear wave equation in $n$-dimension with $μ=0$. Consequently, by connecting the result of D'Abbicco--Lucente--Reissig 2015, our result clarifies the threshold exponent $p_0(N+μ)$ for di…

We study blow-up behavior of solutions for the Cauchy problem of the semilinear wave equation with time-dependent damping. When the damping is effective, and the nonlinearity is subcritical, we show the blow-up rates and the sharp lifespan estimates of solutions. Upper estimates are proved by an ODE argument, and lower estimates are given by a method of scaling variables.
We consider initial value problem for semilinear damped wave equations in three space dimensions. We show the small data global existence for the problem without the spherically symmetric assumption and obtain the sharp lifespan of the solutions. This paper is devoted to a proof of the Takamura's conjecture on the lifespan of solutions.
In this paper we consider the semilinear Cauchy problem for the heat equation with power nonlinearity in the Heisenberg group $\mathbf{H}_n$. The heat operator is given in this case by $\partial_t-Δ_H$, where $Δ_H$ is the so-called sub-Laplacian on $\mathbf{H}_n$. We prove that the Fujita exponent $1 + 2/Q$ is critical, where $Q = 2n + 2$ is the homogeneous dimension of $\mathbf{H}_n$. Furthermore, we prove sharp lifespan estimates for local in time solutions in the subcritical case and in the critical case. In order to get the upper bound estimate for the lifespan (especially, in the critical…
In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problems with several fundamental boundary conditions (the Dirichlet/Neumann/Robin boundary condition) for the multi-component system of semi-linear classical damped wave equations outside a ball. By applying a test function approach with a judicious choice of test functions, which approximates the harmonic functions being subject to these boundary conditions on $\partial Ω$, simultaneously we have succeeded in proving the blow-up result in a finite time as well as in catching the sharp upper bound of lifespan estimates for small solutions …
In this paper, we study the finite-time blow up of solutions to the following semilinear wave equation with time-dependent damping \[ \partial_t^2u-Δu+\fracμ{1+t}\partial_tu=|u|^p \] in $\mathbb{R}_{+}\times\mathbb{R}^n$. More precisely, for $0\leqμ\leq 2,μ\neq1$ and $n\geq 2$, there is no global solution for $1<p<p_S(n+μ)$, where $p_S(k)$ is the $k$-dimensional Strauss exponent and a life-span of the blow up solution will be obtained. Our work is an extension of \cite{IS}, where the authors proved a similar blow up result with a larger range of $μ$. However, we obtain a better life-span estim…
We study the semilinear wave equation with power type nonlinearity and small initial data in Schwarzschild spacetime. If the nonlinear exponent $p$ satisfies $2\le p<1+\sqrt 2$, we establish the sharp upper bound of lifespan estimate, while for the most delicate critical power $p=1+\sqrt2$, we show that the lifespan satisfies \[ T(\e)\le \exp\left(C\e^{-(2+\sqrt 2)}\right), \] the optimality of which remains to be proved. The key novelty is that the compact support of the initial data can be close to the event horizon. By combining the global existence result for $p>1+\sqrt 2$ obtained by Lind…
