We consider the averaging principle for deterministic or stochastic systems with a fast stochastic component (family of continuous-time Markov chains depending on the state of the system as a parameter). We show that, due to bifurcations in the simplex of invariant probability measures of the chains, the limiting system should be considered on a graph or on an open book with certain gluing conditions in the vertices of the graph (or on the bifurcation surface).
We study the validity of an averaging principle for a slow-fast system of stochastic reaction diffusion equations. We assume here that the coefficients of the fast equation depend on time, so that the classical formulation of the averaging principle in terms of the invariant measure of the fast equation is not anymore available. As an alternative, we introduce the time depending evolution family of measures associated with the fast equation. Under the assumption that the coefficients in the fast equation are almost periodic, the evolution family of measures is almost periodic. This allows to i…
By using the technique of the Zvonkin's transformation and the classical Khasminkii's time discretization method, we prove the averaging principle for slow-fast stochastic partial differential equations with bounded and Hölder continuous drift coefficients. An example is also provided to explain our result.
In this paper, the strong averaging principle is researched for a class of Hölder continuous drift slow-fast SPDEs with $α$-stable process by the Zvonkin's transformation and the classical Khasminkii's time discretization method. As applications, an example is also provided to explain our result.
This article deals with the weak errors for averaging principle for a stochastic wave equation in a bounded interval $[0,L]$, perturbed by a oscillating term arising as the solution of a stochastic reaction-diffusion equation evolving with respect to the fast time. Under suitable conditions, it is proved that the rate of weak convergence to the averaged effective dynamics is of order $1$ via an asymptotic expansion approach.
This paper is devoted to studying the averaging principle for stochastic differential equations with slow and fast time-scales, where the drift coefficients satisfy local Lipschitz conditions with respect to the slow and fast variables, and the coefficients in the slow equation depend on time $t$ and $ω$. Making use of the techniques of time discretization and truncation, we prove that the slow component strongly converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation.
In this paper, we aim to study the asymptotic behaviour for a class of McKean-Vlasov stochastic partial differential equations with slow and fast time-scales. Using the variational approach and classical Khasminskii time discretization, we show that the slow component strongly converges to the solution of the associated averaged equation. In particular, the corresponding convergence rates are also obtained. The main results can be applied to demonstrate the averaging principle for various McKean-Vlasov nonlinear SPDEs such as stochastic porous media type equation, stochastic $p$-Laplace type e…
In this paper, we study a class of slow-fast stochastic partial differential equations with multiplicative Wiener noise. Under some appropriate conditions, we prove the slow component converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation with optimal orders 1/2 and 1 in the strong and weak sense respectively. The main technique is based on the Poisson equation.
We extend the Erd\H os-R\' enyi law of large numbers to the averaging setup both in discrete and continuous time cases. We consider both stochastic processes and dynamical systems as fast motions whenever they are fast mixing and satisfy large deviations estimates. In the continuous time case we consider flows with large deviations estimates which allow a suspension representation and it turns out that fast mixing of corresponding base transformation suffices for our results.
This paper is devoted to proving the strong averaging principle for slow-fast stochastic partial differential equations with locally monotone coefficients, where the slow component is a stochastic partial differential equations with locally monotone coefficients and the fast component is a stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with strongly monotone coefficients. The result is applicable to a large class of examples, such as the stochastic porous medium equation, the stochastic $p$-Laplace equation, the stochastic Burgers type equation and the stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation, …
In this paper, we consider a class of slow-fast systems of stochastic partial differential equations where the nonlinearity in the slow equation is not continuous and unbounded. We first provide conditions that ensure the existence of a martingale solution. Then we prove that the laws of the slow motions are tight, and any of their limiting points is a martingale solution for a suitable averaged equation. Our results apply to systems of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations where the reaction term in the slow equation is only continuous and has polynomial growth.
We establish large deviation principle (LDP) for the family of vector-valued random processes $(X^ε,Y^ε),ε\to 0$ defined as $$ X^ε_t=\frac{1}{ε^κ}\int_0^t H(ξ^ε_s,Y^ε_s)ds, dY^ε_t=F(ξ^ε_t,Y^ε_t)dt+ Dε^{1/2-κ}G(ξ^ε_t,Y^ε_t)dW_t,$$ where $W_t$ is Wiener process and $ξ^ε_t$ is fast ergodic diffusion. We show that, under $κ<{1/2}$ or less and Veretennikov-Khasminskii type condition for fast diffusion, the LDP holds with rate function of Freidlin-Wentzell's type.
This work studies the averaging principle for a fully coupled two time-scale system, whose slow process is a diffusion process and fast process is a purely jumping process on an infinitely countable state space. The ergodicity of the fast process has important impact on the limit system and the averaging principle. We showed that under strongly ergodic condition, the limit system admits a unique solution, and the slow process converges in the L1-norm to the limit system. However, under certain weaker ergodicity condition, the limit system admits a solution, but not necessarily unique, and the …
This paper is devoted to studying the averaging principle for fast-slow system of rough differential equations driven by mixed fractional Brownian rough path. The fast component is driven by Brownian motion, while the slow component is driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H ~(1/3 < H\leq 1/2)$. Combining the fractional calculus approach to rough path theory and Khasminskii's classical time discretization method, we prove that the slow component strongly converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation in the $L^1$-sense. The averaging principle for a fast-slow…
In this paper, a class of piecewise deterministic Markov processes with underlying fast dynamic is studied. Using a "penalty method" , an averaging result is obtained when the underlying dynamic is infinitely accelerated. The features of the averaged process, which is still a piecewise deterministic Markov process, are fully described.
We study a large deviation principle for a system of stochastic reaction--diffusion equations (SRDEs) with a separation of fast and slow components and small noise in the slow component. The derivation of the large deviation principle is based on the weak convergence method in infinite dimensions, which results in studying averaging for controlled SRDEs. By appropriate choice of the parameters, the fast process and the associated control that arises from the weak convergence method decouple from each other. We show that in this decoupling case one can use the weak convergence method to charact…
We establish the large deviation principle for stochastic differential equations with averaging in the case when all coefficients of the fast component depend on the slow one, including diffusion.
We present the validity of stochastic averaging principle for non-autonomous slow-fast stochastic differential equations (SDEs) whose fast motions admit random periodic solutions. Our investigation is motivated by some problems arising from multi-scale stochastic dynamical systems, where configurations are time dependent due to nonlinearity of the underlying vector fields and the onset of time dependent random invariant sets. Averaging principle with respect to uniform ergodicity of the fast motion is no longer available in this scenario. Lyapunov second method together with synchronous coupli…
We focus on fast-slow systems involving both fractional Brownian motion (fBm) and standard Brownian motion (Bm). The integral with respect to Bm is the standard Ito integral, and the integral with respect to fBm is the generalised Riemann-Stieltjes integral using the tools of fractional calculus. An averaging principle in which the fast-varying diffusion process of the fast-slow systems acts as a noise to be averaged out in the limit is established. It is shown that the slow process has a limit in the mean square sense, which is characterized by the solution of stochastic differential equation…
We study the asymptotic behavior for an inhomogeneous multiscale stochastic dynamical system with non-smooth coefficients. Depending on the averaging regime and the homogenization regime, two strong convergences in the averaging principle of functional law of large numbers type are established. Then we consider the small fluctuations of the system around its average. Nine cases of functional central limit type theorems are obtained. In particular, even though the averaged equation for the original system is the same, the corresponding homogenization limit for the normal deviation can be quite …
We prove a stochastic averaging theorem for stochastic differential equations in which the slow and the fast variables interact. The approximate Markov fast motion is a family of Markov process with generator ${\mathcal L}_x$ for which we obtain a locally uniform law of large numbers and obtain the continuous dependence of their invariant measures on the parameter $x$. These results are obtained under the assumption that ${\mathcal L}_x$ satisfies Hörmander's bracket conditions, or more generally ${\mathcal L}_x$ is a family of Fredholm operators with sub-elliptic estimates. On the other hand …
In this paper, we study a system of stochastic partial differential equations with slow and fast time-scales, where the slow component is a stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation and the fast component is a stochastic reaction-diffusion equation, the system is driven by $α$-stable process with $α\in (1,2)$. Using the classical Khasminskii approach based on time discretization and the techniques of stopping times, we show that the slow component strong converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation under some suitable conditions.
We consider the averaging principle for stochastic reaction-diffusion equations. Under some assumptions providing existence of a unique invariant measure of the fast motion with the frozen slow component, we calculate limiting slow motion. The study of solvability of Kolmogorov equations in Hilbert spaces and the analysis of regularity properties of solutions, allow to generalize the classical approach to finite-dimensional problems of this type in the case of SPDE's.
We set out a general procedure which allows the approximation of certain Markov chains by the solutions of differential equations. The chains considered have some components which oscillate rapidly and randomly, while others are close to deterministic. The limiting dynamics are obtained by averaging the drift of the latter with respect to a local equilibrium distribution of the former. Some general estimates are proved under a uniform mixing condition on the fast variable which give explicit error probabilities for the fluid approximation. Our first result is a stochastic sewing lemma with quantitative estimates for mild incremental processes, with which we study SPDEs driven by fractional Brownian motions in a random environment. We obtain uniform $L^p$-bounds. Our second result is a fractional averaging principle admitting non-stationary fast environments. As an application, we prove a fractional averaging principle for SPDEs.
This paper is devoted to provide a theoretical underpinning for ensemble forecasting with rapid fluctuations in body forcing and in boundary conditions. Ensemble averaging principles are proved under suitable `mixing' conditions on random boundary conditions and on random body forcing. The ensemble averaged model is a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation, with the deviation process (i.e., the approximation error process) quantified as the solution of a linear stochastic partial differential equation.
We study the asymptotic behavior of stochastic hyperbolic parabolic equations with slow and fast time scales. Both the strong and weak convergence in the averaging principe are established, which can be viewed as a functional law of large numbers. Then we study the stochastic fluctuations of the original system around its averaged equation. We show that the normalized difference converges weakly to the solution of a linear stochastic wave equation, which is a form of functional central limit theorem. We provide a unified proof for the above convergence by using the Poisson equation in Hilbert …
We establish an averaging principle for a family of solutions$(X^{\varepsilon}, Y^{\varepsilon})$ $ :=$ $(X^{1,\,\varepsilon},\,X^{2,\,\varepsilon},\, Y^{\varepsilon})$ of a system of SDE-BSDEwith a null recurrent fast component $X^{1,\,\varepsilon}$. Incontrast to the classical periodic case, we can not rely on aninvariant probability and the slow forward component$X^{2,\,\varepsilon}$ cannot be approximated by a diffusion process. On the other hand, we assume that the coefficients admit a limit in aCesaro sense. In such a case, the limit coefficients may havediscontinuity. We show that we can…
In this article, we investigate averaging principle for stochastic hyperbolic-parabolic equations with two time-scales, in which both the slow and fast components are perturbed by multiplicative noises. Particularly, we prove that the rate of strong convergence for the slow component to the averaged dynamics is of order $1/2$, which significantly improves the order $1/4$ established in our previous work.
In this work we study the averaging principle for non-autonomous slow-fast systems of stochastic differential equations. In particular in the first part we prove the averaging principle assuming the sublinearity, the Lipschitzianity and the Holder's continuity in time of the coefficients, an ergodic hypothesis and an $\mathcal{L}^2$-bound of the fast component. In this setting we prove the weak convergence of the slow component to the solution of the averaged equation. Moreover we provide a suitable dissipativity condition under which the ergodic hypothesis and the $\mathcal{L}^2$-bound of the…
In this paper, we consider the generalized Hodgkin-Huxley model introduced by Austin in \cite{Austin}. This model describes the propagation of an action potential along the axon of a neuron at the scale of ion channels. Mathematically, this model is a fully-coupled Piecewise Deterministic Markov Process (PDMP) in infinite dimension. We introduce two time scales in this model in considering that some ion channels open and close at faster jump rates than others. We perform a slow-fast analysis of this model and prove that asymptotically this two time scales model reduces to the so called average…
The convective Brinkman-Forchheimer equations describe the motion of incompressible fluid flows in a saturated porous medium. This work examines the multiscale stochastic convective Brinkman-Forchheimer (SCBF) equations perturbed by multiplicative Gaussian noise in two and three dimensional bounded domains. We establish a strong averaging principle for the stochastic 2D SCBF equations, which contains a fast time scale component governed by a stochastic reaction-diffusion equation with damping driven by multiplicative Gaussian noise. We exploit the Khasminkii's time discretization approach in t…
We consider slow / fast systems where the slow system is driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>{1\over 2}$. We show that unlike in the case $H={1\over 2}$, convergence to the averaged solution takes place in probability and the limiting process solves the 'naïvely' averaged equation. Our proof strongly relies on the recently obtained stochastic sewing lemma.
We consider "nonconventional" averaging setup in the form $\frac {dX^ε(t)}{dt}=εB\big(X^ε(t),ξ(q_1(t)), ξ(q_2(t)),...,ξ(q_\ell(t))\big)$ where $ξ(t),t\geq 0$ is either a stochastic process or a dynamical system (i.e. then $ξ(t)=F^tx$) with sufficiently fast mixing while $q_j(t)=\al_jt,\,\al_1<\al_2<...<\al_k$ and $q_j,\, j=k+1,...,\ell$ grow faster than linearly. We show that the properly normalized error term in the "nonconventional" averaging principle is asymptotically Gaussian.
In this paper, we consider the averaging principle for one dimensional stochastic Burgers equation with slow and fast time-scales. Under some suitable conditions, we show that the slow component strongly converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation. Meanwhile, when there is no noise in the slow component equation, we also prove that the slow component weakly converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation with the order of convergence $1-r$, for any $0<r<1$.
The averaging principle is established for the slow component and the fast component being two dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations and stochastic reaction-diffusion equations, respectively. The classical Khasminskii approach based on time discretization is used for the proof of the slow component strong convergence to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation under some suitable conditions. Meanwhile, some powerful techniques are used to overcome the difficulties caused by the nonlinear term and to release the regularity of the initial value.
In this work, we study a class of non-autonomous two-time-scale stochastic reaction-diffusion equations driven by Poisson random measures, in which the coefficients satisfy the polynomial growth condition and local Lipschitz condition. First, the existence and uniqueness of the mild solution are proved by constructing auxiliary equations and using the technique of stopping time. Then, consider that the time dependent of the coefficients, the averaged equation is redefined by studying the existence of time-dependent evolution family of measures associated with the frozen fast equation. Mathematical models of biological neural networks are associated to a rich and complex class of stochastic processes. In this paper, we consider a simple {\em plastic} neural network whose {\em connectivity/synaptic strength} $(W(t))$ depends on a set of activity-dependent processes to model {\em synaptic plasticity}, a well-studied mechanism from neuroscience. A general class of stochastic models has been introduced in \cite{robert_mathematical_2020} to study the stochastic process $(W(t))$. It has been observed experimentally that its dynamics occur on much slower timescale than that of the …
We prove an averaging principle which asserts convergence of diffusion processes on domains separated by semi-permeable membranes, when diffusion coefficients tend to infinity while the flux through the membranes remains constant. In the limit, points in each domain are lumped into a single state of a limit Markov chain. The limit chain's intensities are proportional to the membranes' permeability and inversely proportional to the domains' sizes. Analytically, the limit is an example of a singular perturbation in which boundary and transmission conditions play a crucial role. This averaging pr…
We are concerned about the averaging principle for the stochastic Burgers equation with slow-fast time scale. This slow-fast system is driven by Lévy processes. Under some appropriate conditions, we show that the slow component of this system strongly converges to a limit, which is characterized by the solution of stochastic Burgers equation whose coefficients are averaged with respect to the stationary measure of the fast-varying jump-diffusion. To illustrate our theoretical result, we provide some numerical simulations.
This work is devoted to averaging principle of a two-time-scale stochastic partial differential equation on a bounded interval $[0, l]$, where both the fast and slow components are directly perturbed by additive noises. Under some regular conditions on drift coefficients, it is proved that the rate of weak convergence for the slow variable to the averaged dynamics is of order $1-\varepsilon$ for arbitrarily small $\varepsilon>0$. The proof is based on an asymptotic expansion of solutions to Kolmogorov equations associated with the multiple-time-scale system.
We consider a one-dimensional stochastic differential equation driven by a Wiener process, where the diffusion coefficient depends on an ergodic fast process. The averaging principle is satisfied: it is well-known that the slow component converges in distribution to the solution of an averaged equation, with generator determined by averaging the square of the diffusion coefficient. We propose a version of the averaging principle, where the solution is interpreted as the sum of two terms: one depending on the average of the diffusion coefficient, the other giving fluctuations around that averag…
This paper is devoted to a system of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) that have a slow component driven by fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with the Hurst parameter $H >1/2$ and a fast component driven by fast-varying diffusion. It improves previous work in two aspects: Firstly, using a stopping time technique and an approximation of the fBm, we prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for a class of mixed SPDEs driven by both fBm and Brownian motion; Secondly, an averaging principle in the mean square sense for SPDEs driven by fBm subject to an additional fast-varying diffus…
We study diffusion processes driven by a Brownian motion with regular drift in a finite dimension setting. The drift has two components on different time scales, a fast conservative component and a slow dissipative component. Using the theory of Dirichlet form and Mosco-convergence we obtain simpler proofs, interpretations and new results of the averaging principle for such processes when we speed up the conservative component. As a result, one obtains an effective process with values in the space of connected level sets of the conserved quantities. The use of Dirichlet forms provides a simple…
Stochastic averaging allows for the reduction of the dimension and complexity of stochastic dynamical systems with multiple time scales, replacing fast variables with statistically equivalent stochastic processes in order to analyze variables evolving on the slow time scale. These procedures have been studied extensively for systems driven by Gaussian noise, but very little attention has been given to the case of α-stable noise forcing which arises naturally from heavy-tailed stochastic perturbations. In this paper, we study nonlinear fast-slow stochastic dynamical systems in which the fast va…
