Pathwise unique solutions and stochastic averaging for mixed stochastic partial differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion and Brownian motion
This paper is devoted to a system of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) that have a slow component driven by fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with the Hurst parameter $H >1/2$ and a fast component driven by fast-varying diffusion. It improves previous work in two aspects: Firstly, using a stopping time technique and an approximation of the fBm, we prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for a class of mixed SPDEs driven by both fBm and Brownian motion; Secondly, an averaging principle in the mean square sense for SPDEs driven by fBm subject to an additional fast-varying diffusion process is established. To carry out these improvements, we combine the pathwise approach based on the generalized Stieltjes integration theory with the Itô stochastic calculus. Then, we obtain a desired limit process of the slow component which strongly relies on an invariant measure of the fast-varying diffusion process.
We give a simple proof that in a Lipschitz domain in two dimensions with Lipschitz constant one, there is pathwise uniqueness for the Skorokhod equation governing reflecting Brownian motion.
We show that a pathwise stochastic integral with respect to fractional Brownian motion with an adapted integrand $g$ can have any prescribed distribution, moreover, we give both necessary and sufficient conditions when random variables can be represented in this form. We also prove that any random variable is a value of such integral in some improper sense. We discuss some applications of these results, in particular, to fractional Black--Scholes model of financial market.
Our aim in this paper is to establish some strong stability properties of a solution of a stochastic differential equation driven by a fractional Brownian motion for which the pathwise uniqueness holds. The results are obtained using Skorokhod's selection theorem.
Evans (1992) described the semi-group of a superprocess with quadratic branching mechanism under a martingale change of measure in terms of the semi-group of an immortal particle and the semigroup of the superprocess prior to the change of measure. This result, commonly referred to as the spine decomposition, alludes to a pathwise decomposition in which independent copies of the original process `immigrate' along the path of the immortal particle. For branching particle diffusions the analogue of this decomposition has already been demonstrated in the pathwise sense, see for example Hardy and …
In this paper we investigate a problem of large deviations for continuous Volterra processes under the influence of model disturbances. More precisely, we study the behavior, in the near future after $T$, of a Volterra process driven by a Brownian motion in a case where the Brownian motion is not directly observable, but only a noisy version is observed or some linear functionals of the noisy version are observed. Some examples are discussed in both cases.
We prove pathwise nonuniqueness in the stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) for some one-dimensional super-Brownian motions with immigration. In contrast to a closely related case investigated by Mueller, Mytnik and Perkins [Ann. Probab. 42 (2014) 2032-2112], the solutions of the present SPDEs are assumed to be nonnegative and have very different properties including uniqueness in law. In proving possible separation of solutions, we derive delicate properties of certain correlated approximating solutions, which is based on a novel coupling method called continuous decomposition. I…
In a recent paper by Gorin and Shkolnikov (2016), they have found, as a corollary to their result relevant to random matrix theory, that the area below a normalized Brownian excursion minus one half of the integral of the square of its total local time, is identical in law with a centered Gaussian random variable with variance $1/12$. In this note, we give a pathwise interpretation to their identity; Jeulin's identity connecting normalized Brownian excursion and its local time plays an essential role in the exposition.

Stochastic averaging for a class of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with fractional Brownian motion, of the Hurst parameter H in the interval (1/2, 1), is investigated. An averaged SDE for the original SDE is proposed, and their solutions are quantitatively compared. It is shown that the solution of the averaged SDE converges to that of the original SDE in the sense of mean square and also in probability. It is further demonstrated that a similar averaging principle holds for SDEs under stochastic integral of pathwise backward and forward types. Two examples are presented and numerica…
This paper is devoted to studying the averaging principle for fast-slow system of rough differential equations driven by mixed fractional Brownian rough path. The fast component is driven by Brownian motion, while the slow component is driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H ~(1/3 < H\leq 1/2)$. Combining the fractional calculus approach to rough path theory and Khasminskii's classical time discretization method, we prove that the slow component strongly converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation in the $L^1$-sense. The averaging principle for a fast-slow…
We focus on fast-slow systems involving both fractional Brownian motion (fBm) and standard Brownian motion (Bm). The integral with respect to Bm is the standard Ito integral, and the integral with respect to fBm is the generalised Riemann-Stieltjes integral using the tools of fractional calculus. An averaging principle in which the fast-varying diffusion process of the fast-slow systems acts as a noise to be averaged out in the limit is established. It is shown that the slow process has a limit in the mean square sense, which is characterized by the solution of stochastic differential equation…
We study pathwise regularization by noise for equations on the plane in the spirit of the framework outlined by Catellier and Gubinelli (Stochastic Process. Appl., 2016). To this end, we extend the notion of non-linear Young equations to a two dimensional domain and prove existence and uniqueness of such equations. This concept is then used in order to prove regularization by noise for stochastic equations on the plane. The statement of regularization by noise is formulated in terms of the regularity of the local time associated to the perturbing stochastic field. For this, we provide two quan…
For a real cadlag function $f$ and positive constant $c$ we find another cadlag function, which has the smallest total variation possible among the functions uniformly approximating f with accuracy c=2. The solution is expressed with the truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation introduced in the papers R. Łochowski, Truncated variation of Brownian motion with drift, Bull. Pol. Acad. Sci. Math. Vol. 56 (2008) and R. Łochowski, Truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation of Brownian motion with drift - their characteris…
Brownian motions on star graphs in the sense of Itô-McKean, that is, Walsh processes admitting a generalized boundary behavior including stickiness and jumps and having an angular distribution with finite support, are examined. Their generators are identified as Laplace operators on the graph subject to non-local Feller-Wentzell boundary conditions. A pathwise description is achieved for every admissible boundary condition: For finite jump measures, a construction of Kostrykin, Potthoff and Schrader in the continuous setting is expanded via a technique of successive killings and revivals; for …
In this paper, we study rough path properties of stochastic integrals of Itô's type and Stratonovich's type with respect to $G$-Brownian motion. The roughness of $G$-Brownian Motion is estimated and then the pathwise Norris lemma in $G$-framework is obtained.
The Tanaka equation $dX_t={\operatorname{sign}}(X_t)\,dB_t$ is an example of a stochastic differential equation (SDE) without strong solution. Hence pathwise uniqueness does not hold for this equation. In this note we prove that if we modify the right-hand side of the equation, roughly speaking, with a strong enough additive noise, independent of the Brownian motion B, then the solution of the obtained equation is pathwise unique.
In this note we prove an existence and uniqueness result of solution for stochastic Volterra integral equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H > 1/2, showing also that the solution has finite moments. The stochastic integral with respect to the fractional Brownian motion is a pathwise Riemann-Stieltjes integral.
This paper is devoted to the study of hyperbolic systems of linear partial differential equations perturbed by a Brownian motion. The existence and uniqueness of solutions are proved by an energy method. The specific features of this class of stochastic partial differential equations are highlighted and the comparison with standard existence results for SPDEs is discussed. The small perturbations problem is studied and a large deviation principle is stated. A pathwise approximation result, similar to the stochastic differential equations case, is established, with an application to a support t…
In this paper we consider stochastic differential equations with non-negativity constraints, driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>\1/2$. We first study an ordinary integral equation where the integral is defined in the Young sense and then we apply this result pathwise to solve the stochastic problem.
This paper investigates a non-autonomous slow-fast system, which is generalized by stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with locally Lipschitz coefficients, subjected to standard Brownian motion (Bm) and fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with Hurst parameter 1/2<H<1. We concentrate on how to handle both types of integrals with respect to Bm and fBm and the locally Lispchitz continuity. The pathwise approach and the Ito stochastic calculus are combined with the technique of stopping time to establish the averaging principle where the averaged equation is defined. Then, the slow component of …
The present paper is devoted to the study of sample paths of G-Brownian motion and stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion from the view of rough path theory. As the starting point, we show that quasi-surely, sample paths of G-Brownian motion can be enhanced to the second level in a canonical way so that they become geometric rough paths of roughness 2 < p < 3. This result enables us to introduce the notion of rough differential equations (RDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion in the pathwise sense under the general framework of rough paths. Next we establish the funda…
Stochastic averaging for a class of backward stochastic differential equations driven by both standard and fractional Brownian motions (SFrBSDEs in short), is investigated. An averaged SFrBSDEs for the original SFrBSDEs is proposed, and their solutions are quantitatively compared. Under some appropriate assumptions, the solutions to original systems can be approximated by the solutions to averaged stochastic systems in the sense of mean square and also in probability.
A pathwise construction of discontinuous Brownian motions on metric graphs is given for every possible set of non-local Feller-Wentzell boundary conditions. This construction is achieved by locally decomposing the metric graphs into star graphs, establishing local solutions on these partial graphs, pasting the solutions together, introducing non-local jumps, and verifying the generator of the resulting process.
In this article, a class of second order differential equations on [0,1], driven by a general Hölder continuous function and with multiplicative noise, is considered. We first show how to solve this equation in a pathwise manner, thanks to Young integration techniques. We then study the differentiability of the solution with respect to the driving process and consider the case where the equation is driven by a fractional Brownian motion, with two aims in mind: show that the solution we have produced coincides with the one which would be obtained with Malliavin calculus tools, and prove that th…
We consider stochastic differential equation involving pathwise integral with respect to fractional Brownian motion. The estimates for the Hurst parameter are constructed according to first- and second-order quadratic variations of observed values of the solution. The rate of convergence of these estimates to the true value of a parameter is established.
We introduce a new method of proving pathwise uniqueness, and we apply it to the degenerate stochastic differential equation \[dX_t=|X_t|^α dW_t,\] where $W_t$ is a one-dimensional Brownian motion and $α\in(0,1/2)$. Weak uniqueness does not hold for the solution to this equation. If one restricts attention, however, to those solutions that spend zero time at 0, then pathwise uniqueness does hold and a strong solution exists. We also consider a class of stochastic differential equations with reflection.
We consider slow / fast systems where the slow system is driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>{1\over 2}$. We show that unlike in the case $H={1\over 2}$, convergence to the averaged solution takes place in probability and the limiting process solves the 'naïvely' averaged equation. Our proof strongly relies on the recently obtained stochastic sewing lemma.
The aim of the paper is to establish a convergence theorem for multi-dimensional stochastic approximation when the "innovations" satisfy some "light" averaging properties in the presence of a pathwise Lyapunov function. These averaging assumptions allow us to unify apparently remote frameworks where the innovations are simulated (possibly deterministic like in Quasi-Monte Carlo simulation) or exogenous (like market data) with ergodic properties. We propose several fields of applications and illustrate our results on five examples mainly motivated by Finance.
In this note we prove the existence of a density for the law of the solution for 1-dimensional stochastic delay differential equations with normal reflection. The equations are driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H > 1/2$. The stochastic integral with respect to the fractional Brownian motion is a pathwise Riemann-Stieltjes integral.
We study a notion of local time for a continuous path, defined as a limit of suitable discrete quantities along a general sequence of partitions of the time interval. Our approach subsumes other existing definitions and agrees with the usual (stochastic) local times a.s. for paths of a continuous semimartingale. We establish pathwise version of the Itô-Tanaka, change of variables and change of time formulae. We provide equivalent conditions for existence of pathwise local time. Finally, we study in detail how the limiting objects, the quadratic variation and the local time, depend on the choic…
For any real-valued stochastic process $X$ with cŕdlŕg paths we define non-empty family of processes which have locally finite total variation, have jumps of the same order as the process $X$ and uniformly approximate its paths on compacts. The application of the defined class is the definition of stochastic integral with semimartingale integrand and integrator as a limit of pathwise Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals. This construction leads to the stochastic integral with some correction term (different from the Stratonovich integral). We compare the obtained result with classical results of Wong-…
In this note we prove an existence and uniqueness result of solution for stochastic differential delay equations with hereditary drift driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H > 1/2$. Then, we show that, when the delay goes to zero, the solutions to these equations converge, almost surely and in $L^p$, to the solution for the equation without delay. The stochastic integral with respect to the fractional Brownian motion is a pathwise Riemann-Stieltjes integral.
In this paper, we first review the penalization method for solving deterministic Skorokhod problems in non-convex domains and establish estimates for problems with $α$-Hölder continuous functions. With the help of these results obtained previously for deterministic problems, we pathwisely define the reflected $G$-Brownian motion and prove its existence and uniqueness in a Banach space. Finally, multi-dimensional reflected stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion are investigated via a fixed-point argument.
We study small noise large deviation asymptotics for stochastic differential equations with a multiplicative noise given as a fractional Brownian motion $B^H$ with Hurst parameter $H>\frac12$. The solutions of the stochastic differential equations are defined pathwise under appropriate conditions on the coefficients. The ingredients in the proof of the large deviation principle, which include a variational representation for nonnegative functionals of fractional Brownian motions and a general sufficient condition for a LDP for a collection of functionals of a fractional Brownian motions, have …
Brownian motions on a metric graph are defined. Their generators are characterized as Laplace operators subject to Wentzell boundary at every vertex. Conversely, given a set of Wentzell boundary conditions at the vertices of a metric graph, a Brownian motion is constructed pathwise on this graph so that its generator satisfies the given boundary conditions.
This paper studies the existence and uniqueness of solution of Itô type stochastic differential equation $dx(t)=b(t, x(t), \om)dt+\si(t,x(t), \om) d B(t)$, where $B(t)$ is a fractional Brownian motion of Hurst parameter $H>1/2$ and $dB(t)$ is the Itô differential defined by using Wick product or divergence operator. The coefficients $b$ and $\si$ are random and can be anticipative. Using the relationship between the Itô type and pathwise integrals we first write the equation as a stochastic differential equation involving pathwise integral plus a Malliavin derivative term. To handle this Malli…
We analyse the behaviour of supercritical super-Brownian motion with a barrier through the pathwise backbone embedding of Berestycki et al. (2011). In particular, by considering existing results for branching Brownian motion due to Harris et al. (2006) and Maillard [arxiv:1004.1426], we obtain, with relative ease, conclusions regarding the growth in the right most point in the support, analytical properties of the associated one-sided FKPP equation as well as the distribution of mass on the exit measure associated with the barrier.
We study the density X(t,x) of one-dimensional super-Brownian motion and find the asymptotic behaviour of P(0<X(t,x)<a) as a approaches 0, as well as the Hausdorff dimension of the boundary of the support of X(t). The answers are in terms of the lead eigenvalue of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck generator with a particular killing term. This work is motivated in part by questions of pathwise uniqueness for associated stochastic partial differential equations.
In this work we connect the theory of Dirichlet forms and direct stochastic calculus to obtain strong existence and pathwise uniqueness for Brownian motion that is perturbed by a series of constant multiples of local times at a sequence of points that has exactly one accumulation point in $\mathbb{R}$. The considered process is identified as special distorted Brownian motion $X$ in dimension one and is studied thoroughly. Besides strong uniqueness, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for non-explosion, recurrence and positive recurrence as well as for $X$ to be semimartingale and po…
Starting from the overdamped Langevin dynamics in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $$ dX_t = -\nabla V(X_t) dt + \sqrt{2 β^{-1}} dW_t, $$ we consider a scalar Markov process $ξ_t$ which approximates the dynamics of the first component $X^1_t$. In the previous work [F. Legoll, T. Lelievre, Nonlinearity 2010], the fact that $(ξ_t)_{t \ge 0}$ is a good approximation of $(X^1_t)_{t \ge 0}$ is proven in terms of time marginals, under assumptions quantifying the timescale separation between the first component and the other components of $X_t$. Here, we prove an upper bound on the trajectorial error $\mathbb{E} \lef…
We design numerical schemes for a class of slow-fast systems of stochastic differential equations, where the fast component is an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and the slow component is driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H>1/2$. We establish the asymptotic preserving property of the proposed scheme: when the time-scale parameter goes to $0$, a limiting scheme which is consistent with the averaged equation is obtained. With this numerical analysis point of view, we thus illustrate the recently proved averaging result for the considered SDE systems and the main differences wit…
In this paper we study the pathwise uniqueness of solution to the following stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) with Hölder continuous coefficient: \begin{eqnarray*} \frac{\partial X_t(x)}{\partial t}=\frac{1}{2} ΔX_t(x) +G(X_t(x))+H(X_{t-}(x)) \dot{L}_t(x),~~~ t>0, ~x\in\mathbb{R}, \end{eqnarray*} where $\dot{L}$ denotes an $α$-stable white noise on $\mathbb{R}_+\times \mathbb{R}$ without negative jumps, $G$ satisfies the Lipschitz condition and $H$ is nondecreasing and $β$-Hölder continuous for $1<α<2$ and $0<β<1$. For $G\equiv0$ and $H(x)=x^β$, in Mytnik (2002) a weak solution t…
