We consider the radial focusing energy critical nonlinear wave equation in three spatial dimensions. We establish the stability of the ODE-blowup under random perturbations below the energy space. The argument relies on probabilistic Strichartz estimates in similarity coordinates.
For the energy critical focusing wave equation in three dimensions we establish the existence of blowup solutions via an "exotic" dynamical rescaling of the ground state solution W(x). The scaling law is not of the pure-power type, but rather eternally oscillates between such classes. Moreover, there is a continuum of these scaling laws.
In this paper we report on numerical studies of formation of singularities for the semilinear wave equations with a focusing power nonlinearity $u_{tt} - Δu = u^{p}$ in three space dimensions. We show that for generic large initial data that lead to singularities, the spatial pattern of blowup can be described in terms of linearized perturbations about the fundamental self-similar (homogeneous in space) solution. We consider also non-generic initial data which are fine-tuned to the threshold for blowup and identify critical solutions that separate blowup from dispersal for some values of the e…
We consider solutions of the focusing cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies. We identify an observable corresponding to the average energy per particle, and we prove that it is a conserved quantity. We prove that all solutions to the focusing GP hierarchy at the $L^2$-critical or $L^2$-supercritical level blow up in finite time if the energy per particle in the initial condition is negative. Our results do not assume any factorization of the initial data.
We study dynamics near the threshold for blowup in the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation $u_{tt}-u_{xx} + u - |u|^{2α} u =0$ on the line. Using mixed numerical and analytical methods we find that solutions starting from even initial data, fine-tuned to the threshold, are trapped by the static solution $S$ for intermediate times. The details of trapping are shown to depend on the power $α$, namely, we observe fast convergence to $S$ for $α>1$, slow convergence for $α=1$, and very slow (if any) convergence for $0<α<1$. Our findings are complementary with respect to the recent rigorous ana…
We study the blowup behavior for the focusing energy-supercritical semilinear wave equation in 3 space dimensions without symmetry assumptions on the data. We prove the stability of the ODE blowup profile.
In this paper we study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing mass-critical nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation. We establish a profile decomposition and a compactness lemma related to the equation. As a result, we obtain the $L^2$-concentration and the limiting profile with minimal mass of blowup solutions.
We study the blowup behavior of a class of strongly perturbed wave equations with a focusing supercritical power nonlinearity in three spatial dimensions. We show that the ODE blowup profile of the unperturbed equation still describes the asymptotics of stable blowup. As a consequence, stable ODE-type blowup is seen to be a universal phenomenon that exists in a large class of semilinear wave equations.
We consider the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation and prove that blowup solutions to this equation with initial data in $H^s(\R^d)$, $s > s_0(d)$ and $d\geq 3$, concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time. This extends recent work by J. Colliander, S. Raynor, C. Sulem, and J. D. Wright, \cite{crsw}, T. Hmidi and S. Keraani, \cite{hk}, and N. Tzirakis, \cite{tzirakis}, on the blowup of the two-dimensional and one-dimensional mass-critical focusing NLS below the energy space to all dimensions $d\ge 3$.
In this paper we prove rigidity for blowup solutions to the focusing, mass-critical nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation in dimensions $2 \leq d \leq 15$ with mass equal to the mass of the soliton. We prove that the only such solutions are the solitons and the pseudoconformal transformation of the solitons.
In this paper we study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing intercritical (mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical) nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation. We firstly establish the profile decomposition of bounded sequences in $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^2$. We also prove a compactness lemma and a variational characterization of ground states related to the equation. As a result, we obtain the $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}}$-concentration of blowup solutions with bounded $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}}$-norm and the limiting profile of blowup solutions with critical $\dot{…
We consider the wave equation with a focusing cubic nonlinearity in higher odd space dimensions without symmetry restrictions on the data. We prove that there exists an open set of initial data such that the corresponding solution exists in a backward light-cone and approaches the ODE blowup profile.
Let $d\geq 4$ and let $u$ be a global solution to the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t+Δu=-|u|^{\frac 4d}u$ with spherically symmetric $H_x^1$ initial data and mass equal to that of the ground state $Q$. We prove that if $u$ does not scatter then, up to phase rotation and scaling, $u$ is the solitary wave $e^{it}Q$. Combining this result with that of Merle \cite{merle2}, we obtain that in dimensions $d\geq 4$, the only spherically symmetric minimal-mass blowup solutions are, up to phase rotation and scaling, the pseudo-conformal ground state and the solitary wave.
We study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing $L^2$-supercritical nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u -(-Δ)^s u = -|u|^αu, \quad u(0) = u_0, \quad \text{on } [0,\infty) \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d \geq 2, \frac{d}{2d-1} \leq s <1$, $\frac{4s}{d}<α<\frac{4s}{d-2s}$ and $u_0 \in \dot{H}^{s_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^s$ is radial with the critical Sobolev exponent $s_{\text{c}}$. To this end, we establish a compactness lemma related to the equation by means of the profile decomposition for bounded sequences in $\dot{H}^{s_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^s$. …
We consider semilinear wave equations with focusing power nonlinearities in odd space dimensions $d \geq 5$. We prove that for every $p > \frac{d+3}{d-1}$ there exists an open set of radial initial data in $H^{\frac{d+1}{2}} \times H^{\frac{d-1}{2}}$ such that the corresponding solution exists in a backward lightcone and approaches the ODE blowup profile. The result covers the entire range of energy supercritical nonlinearities and extends our previous work for the three-dimensional radial wave equation to higher space dimensions.
We study corotational wave maps from $(1+4)$-dimensional Minkowski space into the $4$-sphere. We prove the stability of an explicitly known self-similar wave map under perturbations that are small in the critical Sobolev space.
For the focusing cubic wave equation, we find an explicit, non-trivial self-similar blowup solution $u^*_T$, which is defined on the whole space and exists in all supercritical dimensions $d \geq 5$. For $d=7$, we analyze its stability properties without any symmetry assumptions and prove the existence of a set of perturbations which lead to blowup via $u^*_T$ in a backward light cone. Moreover, this set corresponds to a co-dimension one Lipschitz manifold modulo translation symmetries in similarity coordinates.
We study the construction of analytical non-radially solutions for the 1-dimensional compressible adiabatic Euler equations in this article. We could design the perturbational method to construct a new class of analytical solutions. In details, we perturb the linear velocity:% \begin{equation} u=c(t)x+b(t) \end{equation} and substitute it into the compressible Euler equations. By comparing the coefficients of the polynomial, we could deduce the corresponding functional differential system of $(c(t),b(t),ρ^{γ-1}(0,t)).$ Then by skillfully applying the Hubble's transformation: \begin{equation} c…
Nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equations can have solutions that blow-up. We numerically study the long time behavior and potential blowup of solutions to the focusing Davey-Stewartson II equation by analyzing perturbations of the lump and the Ozawa exact solutions. It is shown in this way that the lump is unstable to both blowup and dispersion, and that blowup in the Ozawa solution is generic.
In this paper, the Choquard equation with an inverse-square potential and both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities in the energy-subcritical regime is investigated. For all the cases, the local well-posedness result in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is established. Moreover, the global existence result for arbitrary initial values is proved in the defocusing case while a global existence/blowup dichotomy below the ground state is established in the focusing case.
We consider a class of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse-square potential \[ i\partial_t u + Δu -c|x|^{-2}u = - |u|^αu, \quad u(0)=u_0 \in H^1, \quad (t,x)\in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d\geq 3$, $\frac{4}{d}\leq α\leq \frac{4}{d-2}$ and $c\ne 0$ satisfies $c>-λ(d):=-\left(\frac{d-2}{2}\right)^2$. In the mass-critical case $α=\frac{4}{d}$, we prove the global existence and blowup below ground states for the equation with $d\geq 3$ and $c>-λ(d)$. In the mass and energy intercritical case $\frac{4}{d}<α<\frac{4}{d-2}$, we prove the global existence and blowu…
We consider $L^2$-critical focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equations with Hartree type nonlinearity $$i \pr_t u = -\DD u - \big (Φ\ast |u|^2 \big) u \quad {in $\RR^4$},$$ where $Φ(x)$ is a perturbation of the convolution kernel $|x|^{-2}$. Despite the lack of pseudo conformal invariance for this equation, we prove the existence of critical mass finite-time blowup solutions $u(t,x)$ that exhibit the pseudo-conformal blowup rate $$ \| \nabla u(t) \|_{L^2_x} \sim \frac{1}{|t|} \quad {as} \quad t \nearrow 0 . $$ Furthermore, we prove the finite-codimensional stability of this conformal blow up, by…
In this article, we study the perturbational method to construct the non-radially symmetric solutions of the compressible 2-component Camassa-Holm equations. In detail, we first combine the substitutional method and the separation method to construct a new class of analytical solutions for that system. In fact, we perturb the linear velocity: u=c(t)x+b(t), and substitute it into the system. Then, by comparing the coefficients of the polynomial, we can deduce the functional differential equations involving $(c(t),b(t),ρ^{2}(0,t)).$ Additionally, we could apply the Hubble's transformation c(t)={…
We consider co-rotational wave maps from (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski space into the three-sphere. This model exhibits an explicit blowup solution and we prove the asymptotic nonlinear stability of this solution in the whole space under small perturbations of the initial data. The key ingredient is the introduction of a novel coordinate system that allows one to track the evolution past the blowup time and almost up to the Cauchy horizon of the singularity. As a consequence, we also obtain a result on continuation beyond blowup.
In this paper, we consider a class of the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u + Δu + |x|^{-b} |u|^αu = 0, \quad u(0)=u_0 \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^d), \] with $0<b<\min\{2,d\}$ and $α_\star\leq α<α^\star$ where $α_\star =\frac{4-2b}{d}$ and $α^\star=\frac{4-2b}{d-2}$ if $d\geq 3$ and $α^\star = \infty$ if $d=1,2$. In the mass-critical case $α=α_\star$, we prove that if $u_0$ has negative energy and satisfies either $xu_0 \in L^2$ with $d\geq 1$ or $u_0$ is radial with $d\geq 2$, then the corresponding solution blows up in finite time. Moreover, when $d=1$, we prove …
We consider the fractional Schrödinger equations with focusing Hartree type nonlinearity. When the energy is negative, we use a Glassey's virial type argument to show the finite time blow-up of solutions.
We consider the blowup rate for blowup solutions to $L^2$-critical, focusing NLS with a harmonic potential and a rotation term. Under a suitable spectral condition we prove that there holds the "$\log$-$\log$ law" when the initial data is slightly above the ground state. We also construct minimal mass blowup solutions near the ground state level with distinct blowup rates.
We analyze the blowup behaviour of solutions to the focusing nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation in spatial dimensions $d\geq 2$. We obtain upper bounds on the blowup rate, both globally in space and in light cones. The results are sharp in the conformal and sub-conformal cases. The argument relies on Lyapunov functionals derived from the dilation identity. We also prove that the critical Sobolev norm diverges near the blowup time.
In this paper, we study the $H^s$-stability of the log-log blowup regime (which has been completely described in a series of recent works by Merle and Raphael) for the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations $i\partial_tu+Δu+|u|^\frac4du=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d\geq3$. We aim to extend the result in [Colliander and Raphael, Rough blowup solutions to the $L^2$ critical NLS, Math. Anna., 345(2009), 307-366.] for dimension two to the higher dimensions cases $d\geq3$, where we use the bootstrap argument in the above paper and the commutator estimates in [M. Visan and X. Zhang, O…
We show that generic linear perturbations $ψ$ solving $\Box_g ψ+ \fracα{l^2} ψ=0$ on Reissner-Nordström-AdS black holes have infinite local energy at the Cauchy horizon. Combined with the result of arXiv:1812.06142 that such perturbations $ψ$ remain uniformly bounded and extend continuously across the Cauchy horizon, this settles the linear analog of the Strong Cosmic Censorship conjecture for Reissner-Nordström-AdS: the $C^0$-formulation is false but the $H^1$-formulation is true.
We consider the focusing inhomogeneous mass critical half-wave equation in one dimension. Under the mild conditions of the inhomogeneous factor, we show that the existence of the radial blowup solutions with ground state mass $\|u_0\|_2=\|Q\|_2$, where $Q$ is the unique positive ground state solution of equation $DQ+Q=Q^3$ and obtain the blowup rate $\|D^{\frac{1}{2}}u(t)\|_{L^2}\sim\frac{1}{|t|}$ as $t\nearrow 0^-$.
In this paper, we prove a universal upper bound on the blowup rate of a focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an angular momentum under a trapping harmonic potential, assuming that the initial data is radially symmetric in the weighted Sobolev space. The nonlinearity is in the mass supercritical and energy subcritical regime. Numerical simulations are also presented.
We consider spherically symmetric supercritical focusing wave equations outside a ball. Using mixed analytical and numerical methods, we show that the threshold for blowup is given by a codimension-one stable manifold of the unique static solution with exactly one unstable direction. We analyze in detail the convergence to this critical solution for initial data fine-tuned to the threshold.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the biharmonic (i.\,e.~fourth-order) NLS with focusing nonlinearity given by $i \partial_t u = Δ^2 u - μΔu -|u|^{2 σ} u$ for $(t,x) \in [0,T) \times \mathbb{R}^d$, where $0 < σ<\infty$ for $d \leq 4$ and $0 < σ\leq 4/(d-4)$ for $d \geq 5$; and $μ\in \mathbb{R}$ is some parameter to include a possible lower-order dispersion. In the mass-supercritical case $σ> 4/d$, we prove a general result on finite-time blowup for radial data in $H^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ in any dimension $d \geq 2$. Moreover, we derive a universal upper bound for the blowup rate for suitable $4/d …
In this paper, we consider the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb{R}^5 \times SO(5)$. In the $SO(5)-$equivariant setting, the Yang-Mills heat equation reduces to a single semilinear reaction-diffusion equation for which an explicit self-similar blowup solution was found by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small perturbations. In particular, we show that there exists an open set of initial conditions in a suitable topology such that the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time and converge to a non-trivial self-similar…
We study the singularity formation of smooth solutions of the relativistic Euler equations in $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetime for both finite initial energy and infinite initial energy. For the finite initial energy case, we prove that any smooth solution, with compactly supported non-trivial initial data, blows up in finite time. For the case of infinite initial energy, we first prove the existence, uniqueness and stability of a smooth solution if the initial data is in the subluminal region away from the vacuum. By further assuming the initial data is a smooth compactly supported perturbation …
We consider the focusing cubic wave equation in the energy supercritical case, i.e., in dimensions $d \geq 5$. For this model an explicit nontrivial self-similar blowup solution was recently found by the first and third author in \cite{GlogicSchoerkhuber}. Furthermore, the solution is proven to be co-dimension one stable in $d=7$. In this paper, we study the equation from a numerical point of view. For $d=5$ and $d=7$ in the radial case, we provide evidence that this solution is at the threshold between generic ODE blowup and dispersion. In addition, we investigate the spectral problem that un…
We consider the initial value problem for the spherically symmetric, focusing cubic wave equation in three spatial dimensions. We give numerical and analytical evidence for the existence of a universal attractor which encompasses both global and blowup solutions. As a byproduct we get an explicit description of the critical behavior at the threshold of blowup.
We consider $L^{2}$-supercritical and $H^{1}$-subcritical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We introduce a subset $PW$ of $H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ for $d\ge 1$, and investigate behavior of the solutions with initial data in this set. For this end, we divide $PW$ into two disjoint components $PW_{+}$ and $PW_{-}$. Then, it turns out that any solution starting from a datum in $PW_{+}$ behaves asymptotically free, and solution starting from a datum in $PW_{-}$ blows up or grows up, from which we find that the ground state has two unstable directions. We also investigate some properties of …
We construct an extremizer for the kinetic energy inequality (except the endpoint cases) developing the concentration-compactness technique for operator valued inequality in the formulation of the profile decomposition. Moreover, we investigate the properties of the extremizer, such as the system of Euler-Lagrange equations, regularity and summability. As an application, we study a dynamical consequence of a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with focusing cubic nonlinearities in three dimension when each wave function is restricted to be orthogonal. Using the critical element of the ki…
In this article, we study the log-log blowup dynamics for the mass critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ under rough but structured random perturbations at $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ regularity. In particular, by employing probabilistic methods, we provide a construction of a family of $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ regularity solutions which do not lie in any $H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for any $s>0$, and which blowup according to the log-log dynamics.
We consider the critical focusing wave equation $(-\partial_t^2+Δ)u+u^5=0$ in $\R^{1+3}$ and prove the existence of energy class solutions which are of the form [u(t,x)=t^\fracμ{2}W(t^μx)+η(t,x)] in the forward lightcone ${(t,x)\in\R\times \R^3: |x|\leq t, t\gg 1}$ where $W(x)=(1+(1/3)|x|^2)^{-(1/2)}$ is the ground state soliton, $μ$ is an arbitrary prescribed real number (positive or negative) with $|μ|\ll 1$, and the error $η$ satisfies [|\partial_t η(t,\cdot)|_{L^2(B_t)} +|\nabla η(t,\cdot)|_{L^2(B_t)}\ll 1,\quad B_t:={x\in\R^3: |x|<t}] for all $t\gg 1$. Furthermore, the kinetic energy of $…
We establish global well-posedness and scattering for solutions to the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t + Δu = \pm |u|^{4/d} u$ for large spherically symmetric L^2_x(R^d) initial data in dimensions $d\geq 3$. In the focusing case we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state. As a consequence, we obtain that in the focusing case, any spherically symmetric blowup solution must concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time.
We consider finite time blowup solutions of the $L^2$-critical cubic focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\R^2$. Such functions, when in $H^1$, are known to concentrate a fixed $L^2$-mass (the mass of the ground state) at the point of blowup. Blowup solutions from initial data that is only in $L^2$ are known to concentrate at least a small amount of mass. In this paper we consider the intermediate case of blowup solutions from initial data in $H^s$, with $1 > s > s_Q$, where $s_Q \le \sQ$. Our main result is that such solutions, when radially symmetric, concentrate at least the mass of …
