We present some numerical findings concerning the nature of the blowup vs. global existence dichotomy for the focusing cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in three dimensions for radial data. The context of this study is provided by the classical paper by Payne, Sattinger from 1975, as well as the recent work by K. Nakanishi, and the second author arXiv:1005.4894. Specifically, we numerically investigate the boundary of the forward scattering region. At this point we do not have sufficient numerical evidence that might indicate whether or not the boundary remains a smooth manifold for general energies. In this updated version we include some fine-scale computations that reveal more complicated structures than one might expect.
We analyze the blowup behaviour of solutions to the focusing nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation in spatial dimensions $d\geq 2$. We obtain upper bounds on the blowup rate, both globally in space and in light cones. The results are sharp in the conformal and sub-conformal cases. The argument relies on Lyapunov functionals derived from the dilation identity. We also prove that the critical Sobolev norm diverges near the blowup time.
We study dynamics near the threshold for blowup in the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation $u_{tt}-u_{xx} + u - |u|^{2α} u =0$ on the line. Using mixed numerical and analytical methods we find that solutions starting from even initial data, fine-tuned to the threshold, are trapped by the static solution $S$ for intermediate times. The details of trapping are shown to depend on the power $α$, namely, we observe fast convergence to $S$ for $α>1$, slow convergence for $α=1$, and very slow (if any) convergence for $0<α<1$. Our findings are complementary with respect to the recent rigorous ana…
We construct an extremizer for the kinetic energy inequality (except the endpoint cases) developing the concentration-compactness technique for operator valued inequality in the formulation of the profile decomposition. Moreover, we investigate the properties of the extremizer, such as the system of Euler-Lagrange equations, regularity and summability. As an application, we study a dynamical consequence of a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with focusing cubic nonlinearities in three dimension when each wave function is restricted to be orthogonal. Using the critical element of the ki…
Blowup analysis for solutions of a general evolution equation with nonlocal diffusion and localized source is performed. By comparison with recent results on global-in-time solutions, a dichotomy result is obtained.
We study global dynamics for the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with the energy-critical nonlinearity in two or higher dimensions when the energy equals the threshold given by the ground state of a mass-shifted equation, and prove that the solutions are divided into scattering and blowup. In short, the Kenig-Merle scattering/blowup dichotomy extends to the threshold energy in the case of mass-shift for the critical nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation.
In this paper, the Choquard equation with an inverse-square potential and both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities in the energy-subcritical regime is investigated. For all the cases, the local well-posedness result in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is established. Moreover, the global existence result for arbitrary initial values is proved in the defocusing case while a global existence/blowup dichotomy below the ground state is established in the focusing case.
In this paper we prove finite-time blowup of radially symmetric solutions to the quasilinear parabolic-parabolic two-dimensional Keller-Segel system for any positive mass. This is done in case of nonlinear diffusion and also in the case of nonlinear cross-diffusion provided the nonlinear chemosensitivity term is assumed not to decay. Moreover, it is shown that the above-mentioned lack of non-decay assumption is essential with respect to keeping the dichotomy finite-time blowup against boundedness of solutions. Namely, we prove that without the non-decay assumption possible asymptotic behaviour…
We consider the global dynamics below the ground state energy for the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov system in the 3D radial case; and obtain the dichotomy between scattering and finite time blow up.

We propose and analyze two regularized finite difference methods for the logarithmic Klein-Gordon equation (LogKGE). Due to the blowup phenomena caused by the logarithmic nonlinearity of the LogKGE, it is difficult to construct numerical schemes and establish their error bounds. In order to avoid singularity, we present a regularized logarithmic Klein-Gordon equation (RLogKGE) with a small regularized parameter $0<\varepsilon\ll1$. Besides, two finite difference methods are adopted to solve the regularized logarithmic Klein-Gordon equation (RLogKGE) and rigorous error bounds are estimated in t…
We give a sufficient condition for existence of an exponential dichotomy for a general linear dynamical system (not necessarily invertible) in a Banach space, in discrete or continuous time. We provide applications to the backward heat equation with a potential varying in time and to the heat equation with a finite number of slowly moving potentials. We also consider the Klein-Gordon equation with a finite number of potentials whose centres move at sub-light speed with small accelerations.
We consider both the defocusing and focusing cubic nonlinear Klein--Gordon equations $$ u_{tt} - Δu + u \pm u^3 =0 $$ in two space dimensions for real-valued initial data $u(0)\in H^1_x$ and $u_t(0)\in L^2_x$. We show that in the defocusing case, solutions are global and have finite global $L^4_{t,x}$ spacetime bounds. In the focusing case, we characterize the dichotomy between this behaviour and blowup for initial data with energy less than that of the ground state. These results rely on analogous statements for the two-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which are known in the …
In this paper we consider the real-valued mass-critical nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations in three and higher dimensions. We prove the dichotomy between scattering and blow-up below the ground state energy in the focusing case, and the energy scattering in the defocusing case. We use the concentration-compactness/rigidity method as R. Killip, B. Stovall, and M. Visan [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 364 (2012)]. The main new novelty is to approximate the large scale (low-frequency) profile by the solution of the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation when the nonlinearity is not algebraic.
We show scattering versus blow-up dichotomy below the ground state energy for the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation, in the spirit of Kenig-Merle for the $H^1$ critical wave and Schrödinger equations. Our result includes the $H^1$ critical case, where the threshold is given by the ground state for the massless equation, and the 2D square-exponential case, where the mass for the ground state may be modified, depending on the constant in the sharp Trudinger-Moser inequality. The main difficulty is lack of scaling invariance both in the linear and nonlinear terms.
We study the focusing, cubic, nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in 3D with large radial data in the energy space. This equation admits a unique positive stationary solution, called the ground state. In 1975, Payne and Sattinger showed that solutions with energy strictly below that of the ground state are divided into two classes, depending on a suitable functional: If it is negative, then one has finite time blowup, if it is nonnegative, global existence; moreover, these sets are invariant under the flow. Recently, Ibrahim, Masmoudi and the first author improved this result by establishing scatt…
We use the idea of ground states and excited states in nonlinear dispersive equations (e.g. Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger equations) to characterize solutions in the N-body problem with strong force under some energy constraints. Indeed, relative equilibria of the N-body problem play a similar role as solitons in PDE. We introduce the ground state and excited energy for the N-body problem. {We are able to give a conditional dichotomy of the global existence and singularity below the excited energy in Theorem \ref{thm:dichotomy}, the proof of which seems original and simple. This dichotomy is gi…
We consider the global regularity problem for nonlinear wave systems $$ \Box u = f(u) $$ on Minkowski spacetime ${\bf R}^{1+d}$ with d'Alambertian $\Box := -\partial_t^2 + \sum_{i=1}^d \partial_{x_i}^2$, where the field $u \colon {\bf R}^{1+d} \to {\bf R}^m$ is vector-valued, and the nonlinearity $f \colon {\bf R}^m \to {\bf R}^m$ is a smooth function with $f(0)=0$ and all derivatives bounded; the higher-dimensional sine-Gordon equation $\Box u = \sin u$ is a model example of this class of nonlinear wave system. For dimensions $d \leq 9$, it follows from the work of Heinz, Pecher, Brenner, and…
We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an inverse-square potential in dimensions $3\leq d \leq 6$. We consider both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities in the mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical regime. In the focusing case, we prove a scattering/blowup dichotomy below the ground state. In the defocusing case, we prove scattering in $H^1$ for arbitrary data.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the star graph with the Kirchhoff boundary and the repulsive Dirac delta boundary at the origin. In the present paper, we show the scattering-blowup dichotomy result below the mass-energy of the ground state on the real line. The proof of the scattering part is based on a concentration compactness and rigidity argument. Our main contribution is to give a linear profile decomposition on the star graph by using a symmetrical decomposition.
