We show that the metrisability of an oriented projective surface is equivalent to the existence of pseudo-holomorphic curves. A projective structure $\mathfrak{p}$ and a volume form $σ$ on an oriented surface $M$ equip the total space of a certain disk bundle $Z\to M$ with a pair $(J_{\mathfrak{p}},\mathfrak{J}_{\mathfrak{p},σ})$ of almost complex structures. A conformal structure on $M$ corresponds to a section of $Z\to M$ and $\mathfrak{p}$ is metrisable by the metric $g$ if and only if $[g] : M \to Z$ is a pseudo-holomorphic curve with respect to $J_{\mathfrak{p}}$ and $\mathfrak{J}_{\mathfrak{p},dA_g}$.
We show that on a surface locally every affine torsion-free connection is projectively equivalent to a Weyl connection. First, this is done using exterior differential system theory. Second, this is done by showing that the solutions of the relevant PDE are in one-to-one correspondence with the sections of the `twistor' bundle of conformal inner products having holomorphic image. The second solution allows to use standard results in algebraic geometry to show that the Weyl connections on the two-sphere whose geodesics are the great circles are in one-to-one correspondence with the smooth quadr…
Given a projective structure on a three-dimensional manifold, we find explicit obstructions to the local existence of a Levi-Civita connection in the projective class. These obstructions are given by projectively invariant tensors algebraically constructed from the projective Weyl curvature. We show, by examples, that their vanishing is necessary but not sufficient for local metrisability.
We carry out the programme of R. Liouville \cite{Liouville} to construct an explicit local obstruction to the existence of a Levi--Civita connection within a given projective structure $[Γ]$ on a surface. The obstruction is of order 5 in the components of a connection in a projective class. It can be expressed as a point invariant for a second order ODE whose integral curves are the geodesics of $[Γ]$ or as a weighted scalar projective invariant of the projective class. If the obstruction vanishes we find the sufficient conditions for the existence of a metric in the real analytic case. In the…
A metric projective structure is a manifold equipped with the unparametrised geodesics of some pseudo-Riemannian metric. We make acomprehensive treatment of such structures in the case that there is a projective Weyl curvature nullity condition. The analysis is simplified by a fundamental and canonical 2-tensor invariant that we discover. It leads to a new canonical tractor connection for these geometries which is defined on a rank $(n+1)$-bundle. We show this connection is linked to the metrisability equations that govern the existence of metrics compatible with the structure. The fundamental…
Each of the four critical Severi varieties arises from a minimal holomorphic nilpotent orbit in a simple regular rank 3 hermitian Lie algebra and each such variety lies as singular locus in a cubic--the chordal variety--in the corresponding complex projective space; the cubic and projective space are identified in terms of holomorphic nilpotent orbits. The projective space acquires an exotic Kähler structure with three strata, the cubic is an example of an exotic projective variety with two strata, and the corresponding Severi variety is the closed stratum in the exotic variety as well as in t…
We discuss holomorphic isometric embeddings of the projective line into quadrics using a generalisation of the theorem of do Carmo--Wallach to provide a description of their moduli spaces up to image and gauge--equivalence. Moreover, we show rigidity of the real standard map from the projective line into quadrics.
We study complex analytic (possibly singular) projective connections on the plane. We characterize some of them in terms of their families of integral curves. We also give a beginning of classification of second order odes polynomial in the first and second derivatives, and with holomorphic coefficients.
The mirror of a projective toric manifold $X_Σ$ is given by a Landau-Ginzburg model $(Y,W)$. We introduce a class of Lagrangian submanifolds in $(Y,W)$ and show that, under the SYZ mirror transformation, they can be transformed to torus-invariant hermitian metrics on holomorphic line bundles over $X_Σ$. Through this geometric correspondence, we also identify the mirrors of Hermitian-Einstein metrics, which are given by distinguished Lagrangian sections whose potentials satisfy certain Laplace-type equations.
The authors give a complete classification of projective threefolds admitting a holomorphic normal projective connection. Moreover, they prove a general structure theorem on complex projective manifolds admitting a holomorphic normal projective connection, saying in particular, that any such manifold is either the projective space or minimal in the sense of Mori.
The purpose of this article is to give an interpretation of real projective structures and associated cohomology classes in terms of connections, sections, etc. satisfying elliptic partial differential equations in the spirit of Hodge theory. We shall also give an application of these results as the uniqueness of a minimal surface in a symmetric space.
The authors give a complete classification of projective threefolds admitting a holomorphic conformal structure. A Corollary is the complete list of projective threefolds, whose tangent bundle is a symmetric square.
We study the global property of local holomorphic isometric mappings from a class of Kahler manifolds into a product of projective algebraic manifolds with induced Fubini-Study metrics, where isometric factors are allowed to be negative.
We introduce a weak concept of Morita equivalence, in the birational context, for Poisson modules on complex normal Poisson projective varieties. We show that Poisson modules, on projective varieties with mild singularities, are either rationally Morita equivalent to a flat partial holomorphic sheaf, or a sheaf with a meromorphic flat connection or a co-Higgs sheaf. As an application, we study the geometry of rank two meromorphic rank two $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-Poisson modules which can be interpreted as a Poisson analogous to transversally projective structures for codimension one holomorphic foli…
We introduce the concept of a branched holomorphic Cartan geometry. It generalizes to higher dimension the definition of branched (flat) complex projective structure on a Riemann surface introduced by Mandelbaum. This new framework is much more flexible than that of the usual holomorphic Cartan geometries. We show that all compact complex projective manifolds admit branched flat holomorphic projective structure. We also give an example of a non-flat branched holomorphic normal projective structure on a compact complex surface. It is known that no compact complex surface admits such a structure…
In Part I of this paper we introduced the notion of the projective linking number Link(M,Z) of a compact oriented real submanifold M of dimension 2p-1 in complex projective n-space P^n with an algebraic subvariety Z of codimension p in P^n - M. It is shown here that a basic conjecture concerning the projective hull of real curves in P^2 implies the following result: M is the boundary of a positive holomorphic p-chain T of mass M(T) < K in P^n if and only if Link(M,Z) > -K p!deg(Z) for all algebraic subvarieties Z of codimension p in P^n - M. An analogous result is implied in any projective man…
This is largely a survey paper, dealing with Cartan geometries in the complex analytic category. We first remind some standard facts going back to the seminal works of F. Klein, E. Cartan and C. Ehresmann. Then we present the concept of a branched holomorphic Cartan geometry which was introduced by the authors in [BD]. It generalizes to higher dimension the notion of a branched (flat) complex projective structure on a Riemann surface introduced by Mandelbaum. This new framework is much more flexible than that of the usual holomorphic Cartan geometries (e.g. all compact complex projective manif…
Let $(M,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold with negative holomorphic sectional curvature. It was proved by Wu-Yau and Tosatti-Yang that $M$ is necessarily projective and has ample canonical bundle. In this paper, we show that any irreducible subvariety of $M$ is of general type. Moreover, we can extend the theorem to the quasi-negative curvature case building on earlier results of Diverio-Trapani. Finally, we investigate the more general setting of a quasi-projective manifold $X^{\circ}$ endowed with a Kähler metric with negative holomorphic sectional curvature and we prove that such a manifold …
This manuscript is an introduction to the theory of holomorphic foliations on the complex projective plane. Historically the subject has emerged from the theory of ODEs in the complex domain and various attempts to solve Hilbert's 16th Problem, but with the introduction of complex algebraic geometry, foliation theory and dynamical systems, it has now become an interesting subject of its own.
Let $\mathcal{O}(D)$ be an equivariant line bundle which is big and nef on a complex projective nonsingular toric variety $X$. Given a continuous toric metric $\|\cdot\|$ on $\mathcal{O}(D)$, we define the energy at equilibrium of $(X,ϕ_{\bar{D}})$ where $ϕ_{\bar{D}}$ is the weight of the metrized toric divisor $\bar{D}=(D,\|\cdot\|)$. We show that this energy describes the asymptotic behaviour as $k\rightarrow \infty$ of the volume of the $L^2$-norm unit ball induced by $(X,kϕ_{\bar{D}})$ on the space of global holomorphic sections $H^0(X,\mathcal{O}(kD))$.
We introduce the notion of the projective linking number Link(M,Z) of a compact oriented real submanifold M of dimension 2p-1 in complex projective n-space P^n with an algebraic subvariety Z in P^n - M of codimension p. This notion is related to projective winding numbers and quasi-plurisubharmonic functions, and it generalizes directly from P^n to any projective manifold. Part 1 of this paper establishes the following result for the case p=1. Let M be an oriented, stable, real analytic curve in P^n. Then M is the boundary of a positive holomorphic 1-chain T with Mass(T) < K in P^n if and only…
In this paper, we pose several conjectures on structures and images of maximal rationally connected fibrations of smooth projective varieties admitting semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature. Toward these conjectures, we prove that the canonical bundle of images of such fibrations is not big. Our proof gives a generalization of Yang's solution using RC positivity for Yau's conjecture. As an application, we show that any compact Kähler surface with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature is rationally connected, or a complex torus, or a ruled surface over an elliptic curve.
We prove that the only Calabi--Yau projective manifolds which bear holomorphic Cartan geometries are precisely the abelian varieties. (Nous démontrons que les seules variétés projectives de Calabi--Yau qui possèdent des géométrie holomorphes de Cartan sont les variétés abéliennes.)
In this paper, we establish a structure theorem for a smooth projective variety $X$ with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature. Our structure theorem contains the solution for Yau's conjecture and it can be regarded as a natural generalization of the structure theorem proved by Howard-Smyth-Wu and Mok for holomorphic bisectional curvature. Specifically, we prove that $X$ admits a locally trivial morphism $ϕ:X \to Y$ such that the fiber $F$ is rationally connected and the image $Y$ has a finite étale cover $A \to Y$ by an abelian variety $A$, by combining the author's previous work with…
In this article, we introduce symbol calculus on a projective scheme. Using holomorphic Poisson structures, we construct deformations of ring structures for structure sheaves on projective spaces.
We study codimension one holomorphic distributions on the projective three-space, analyzing the properties of their singular schemes and tangent sheaves. In particular, we provide a classification of codimension one distributions of degree at most 2 with locally free tangent sheaves, and show that codimension one distributions of arbitrary degree with only isolated singularities have stable tangent sheaves. Furthermore, we describe the moduli space of distributions in terms of Grothendieck's Quot-scheme for the tangent bundle. In certain cases, we show that the moduli space of codimension one …
Let S be a compact connected oriented orbifold surface We show that using Bers simultaneous uniformization, the moduli space of projective structure on S can be mapped biholomorphically onto the total space of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space for S. The total space of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space is equipped with the Liouville symplectic form, and the moduli space of projective structures also has a natural holomorphic symplectic form. The above identification is proved to be compatible with these symplectic structures. Similar results are …
The main two families of real hypersurfaces in complex space forms are Hopf and ruled. However, very little is known about real hypersurfaces in the indefinite complex projective space $\cpn$. In a previous work, Kimura and the second author introduced Hopf real hypersurfaces in $\cpn$. In this paper, ruled real hypersurfaces in the indefinite complex projective space are introduced, as those whose maximal holomorphic distribution is integrable, and such that the leaves are totally geodesic holomorphic hyperplanes. A detailed description of the shape operator is computed, obtaining two main di…
We extend the holomorphic analytic torsion classes of Bismut and Köhler to arbitrary projective morphisms between smooth algebraic complex varieties. To this end, we propose an axiomatic definition and give a classification of the theories of generalized holomorphic analytic torsion classes for arbitrary projective morphisms.
We associate to an SU(2) hyperbolic monopole a holomorphic sphere embedded in projective space and use this to uncover various features of the monopole.
We show that a nonsingular complex projective variety admitting a holomorphic vector field with nonempty isolated zeroes, is rational using a key technique by Harvey-Lawson on finite volume flows. This statement was conjectured by J. Carrell. By the same technique, we obtain a uniform upper bound of Betti numbers of nonsingular complex projective variety admitting a holomorphic vector field with exact one zero point. Such an upper bound depends only on the dimension of the variety, which is a stronger version of a result of Akyildiz and Carrell.
We strengthen our previous results regarding the moduli spaces of Zoll metrics and Zoll projective structures on S^2. In particular, we describe a concrete, open condition which suffices to guarantee that a totally real embedding of RP^2 in CP_2 arises from a unique Zoll projective structure on the 2-sphere. Our methods ultimately reflect the special role such structures play in the initial value problem for the 3-dimensional Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl equations.
We prove that holomorphic normal projective connections on compact complex surfaces are flat. We show that a holomorphic torsion-free affine connection $\nabla$ on a compact complex surface is locally modelled on a translations-invariant affine connection on $\C^2$, except if $\nabla$ is a generic connection on a principal elliptic bundle over a Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$, with odd first Betti number. In the last case, the local Killing Lie algebra is of dimension one, generated by the fundamental vector field of the principal fibration.
In this note we show that if a projective manifold admits a Kähler metric with negative holomorphic sectional curvature then the canonical bundle of the manifold is ample. This confirms a conjecture of the second author.
It has been argued by Witten and others that in the presence of a nontrivial B-field, D-brane charges in type IIB string theories are measured by twisted K-theory. In joint work with Bouwknegt, Carey and Murray it was proved that twisted K-theory is canonically isomorphic to bundle gerbe K-theory, whose elements are ordinary vector bundles on a principal projective unitary bundle, with an action of the bundle gerbe determined by the principal projective unitary bundle. The principal projective unitary bundle is in turn determined by the twist. In this paper, we study in more detail the Chern-W…
The first half of the thesis concerns Abelian vortices and Yang-Mills (YM) theory. It is proved that the 5 types of vortices recently proposed by Manton are symmetry reductions of (A)SDYM equations with suitable gauge groups and symmetry groups acting as isometries in a 4-manifold. As a consequence, the twistor integrability results of such vortices can be derived. It is presented a natural definition of their kinetic energy and thus the metric of the moduli space was calculated by the Samols' localisation method. Then, a modified version of the Abelian-Higgs model is proposed in such a way th…
We prove that if a Calabi--Yau manifold $M$ admits a holomorphic Cartan geometry, then $M$ is covered by a complex torus. This is done by establishing the Bogomolov inequality for semistable sheaves on compact Kähler manifolds. We also classify all holomorphic Cartan geometries on rationally connected complex projective manifolds.
We investigate the existence of a holomorphic and isometric immersion in the complex projective space for the complete Ricci-flat Kaehler metrics constructed by M. B. Stenzel on the cotangent bundle of a compact, rank one, globally symmetric space.
We propose a new approach to the value distribution theory of entire holomorphic curves. We define a ``packing density'' of an entire holomorphic curve, and show that it has various non-trivial properties. We prove a ``gap theorem'' for holomorphic maps from elliptic curves to the complex projective space, and study the relation between theta functions and our packing problem. Applying the Nevanlinna theory, we investigate the packing densities of entire holomorphic curves in the complement of hyperplanes.

An unobstructedness theorem is proved for deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson manifolds and applied to a class of examples. These include certain rational surfaces and Hilbert schemes of points on Poisson surfaces. We study in particular the Hilbert schemes of the projective plane and show that a generic deformation is determined by two parameters -- an elliptic curve and a translation on it.
We give a characterization of the boundaries of holomorphic chains in complex projective space in terms of certain non-linear moment conditions. This extends previous work of the authors and complements results of Dolbeault and Henkin.
