We theoretically investigate a relation between the crystalline symmetry and the transient modulation of optical properties of crystalline dielectrics in pump-probe measurements using intense pump and attosecond probe fields. When the photon energy of the pump field is much below the bandgap energy, the modulation of the optical conductivity is caused by the intraband electronic motion, that is, the dynamical Franz-Keldysh effect. We analytically investigate symmetry properties of the modulated optical conductivity utilizing the Houston function, and derive a formula that relates the temporal oscillation in the absorption with the transformation properties of the modulated optical conductivity. To verify the validity of the formula, we perform real-time first-principles calculations based on the time-dependent density functional theory for a pump-probe process taking 4H-SiC crystal as an example.

A synoptic view on the long-established theory of light propagation in crystalline dielectrics is presented, providing a new exact solution for the microscopic local electromagnetic field thus disclosing the role of the divergence-free (transversal) and curl-free (longitudinal) parts of the electromagnetic field inside a material as a function of the density of polarizable atoms. Our results enable fast and efficient calculation of the photonic bandstructure and also the (non-local) dielectric tensor, solely with the crystalline symmetry and atom-individual polarizabilities as input.
Modeling the Dielectric Relaxation in Semicrystalline Polymers -- Understanding the Role of the Interphase between the Amorphous and Crystalline Domains
We examine the ultrafast optical response of the crystalline and amorphous phases of the phase change material Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_5$ below the phase transformation threshold. Simultaneous measurement of the transmissivity and reflectivity of thin film samples yields the time-dependent evolution of the dielectric function for both phases. We then identify how lattice motion and electronic excitation manifest in the dielectric response. The dielectric response of both phases is large but markedly different. At 800 nm, the changes in amorphous GST are well described by the Drude response of the gene…
Structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of Sm$_2$CoMnO$_6$ have been studied. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis show that the sample crystallizes in the monoclinic structure with \textit{P2$_1$/n} space group. Magnetic study shows that the sample undergoes a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition around $T_c$ $\sim$148 K and a low-temperature ordering of Sm$^{3+}$ moments. Temperature-dependent Raman study shows spin-phonon coupling present in this material. Dielectric response of Sm$_2$CoMnO$_6$ shows strong frequency dependence with large dispersion and large dielectric…
The direct growth of high-quality, large single-crystalline domains of graphene on a dielectric substrate is of vital importance for applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Traditionally, graphene domains grown on dielectrics are typically only ~1 nm with a growth rate of ~1 nm/min or less, the main reason is the lack of a catalyst. Here we show that silane, serving as a gaseous catalyst, is able to boost the graphene growth rate to ~1 um/min, thereby promoting graphene domains up to 20 um in size to be synthesized via chemical vapor deposition on hexagonal boron nitride. Hall measure…

The dielectric behavior of the single crystals of the spin-chain system Ca3Co2O6, undergoing geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic ordering below 25 K, has been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field (H) and compared with magnetization (M) behavior. The results provide evidence for anisotropic magnetodielectric (MDE) coupling in this compound. Ac susceptibility exhibits a strong frequency dependence for H parallel c with changes of this feature with the application of external dc magnetic field. No feature in ac susceptibility could be observed for H perpendicular c,…
The intercalated water into nanopores exhibits anomalous properties such as ultralow dielectric constant.~Multi-scale modeling and simulations are used to investigate the dielectric properties of various crystalline two-dimensional ices and bulk ices. Although, the structural properties of two-dimensional (2D-) ices have been extensively studied, much less is known about their electronic and optical properties. First, by using density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), we calculate the key electronic, optical and dielectric properties of 2D-ices. Perform…
Phase-change materials (PCMs), which are well-established in optical and random-access memories, are increasingly studied for emerging topics such as brain-inspired computing and active photonics. These applications take advantage of the pronounced reflectivity and resistivity changes that accompany the structural transition in PCMs from their amorphous to crystalline state. However, PCMs are typically fabricated as thin films via sputtering, which is costly, requires advanced equipment, and limits the sample and device design. Here, we investigate a simpler and more flexi-ble approach for app…
In this paper, we reported the effect of Cu doping on the structural and dielectric properties of Ba$_2$Y$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$TaO$_{6-y}$ (0.00 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.50) ceramics at room temperature. The Copper for Yttrium substitution reduces the sintering temperature and leads to structural changes in the Ba$_2$YTaO$_6$ rock-salt crystalline structure. Dielectric permittivity and complex impedance spectroscopy measurements suggested enhancement of the dielectric constant and occurrence of interfacial Maxwell-Wagner polarization.
In this study, a series of nanocrystalline ferrites of Ni0.7Cu0.30AlxFe2-xO4 (x=0.00 to 0.10 with a step of 0.02) has been synthesized through the sol-gel auto combustion technique. The structural, morphological, dielectric, and electrical properties of the Ni-Cu spinel ferrite nanoparticles are analyzed due to the substitution of Al3+ content. The crystalline and structural characteristics of the prepared nanoparticles (NPs) have been studied employing the x-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra and FTIR analysis. The extracted XRD patterns assure the single-phase cubic spinel structure of all sample…
An optical characterization tool of Raman spectroscopy with extremely weak scattering cross section tool is not popular to analyze scattered signal from a single nanostructure in the sub-diffraction regime. In this regard, plasmonic assisted characterization tools are only relevant in spectroscopic studies of nanoscale object in the sub-diffraction limit. We have reported polarized resonance Raman spectroscopic (RRS) studies with strong electron-phonon coupling to understand the crystalline orientation of a single AlGaN nanowire of diameter about 100 nm. AlGaN nanowire is grown by chemical vap…
One significant drawback of a spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) technique is its time-consuming and often complicated analysis procedure necessary to assess the optical functions of thin-film and bulk samples. Here, to solve this inherent problem of a traditional SE method, we present a new general way that allows full automation of SE analyses for crystalline-phase semiconductors exhibiting complex absorption features. In particular, we have modified a scheme established in our previous study, which performs a non-linear SE fitting analysis only in a low energy region at the beginning, while th…

The effects of preparation temperature on structure, crystallinity, purity, morphology and particles size distribution of BCZT powders were studied. It was clearly shown that pure and crystalline BCZT could be obtained over…
Room-temperature optical constants of crystalline Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ were determined using data extracted from Brillouin light scattering spectra. Optical extinction coefficient-to-refractive index ratios at a wavelength of 532 nm were obtained from bulk phonon peak linewidth and frequency shift measurements and range from $0.19 \leq 2κ/n \leq 0.29$ for directions close to the crystallographic $c$-axis. These ratios, and optical extinction coefficients, absorption coefficients, and imaginary parts of the dielectric function determined from these ratios and known refractive index, ar…
Lead-free Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.10Ti0.90O3 (BCZT) ceramics have demonstrated excellent dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties in comparison to lead-based materials. The synthesis of pure and crystalline BCZT nanopowders at low temperatures of 25, 80 and 160 C was reported previously by using a sol-gel method followed by a hydrothermal route. In this study, the structural, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of sintered BCZT ceramics at 1250 °C for 10h were investigated. XRD measurements revealed the presence of a single perovskite phase at room temperature with the coexistence of…
Many plastic crystals, molecular solids with long-range, center-of-mass crystalline order but dynamic disorder of the molecular orientations, are known to exhibit exceptionally high ionic conductivity. This makes them promising candidates for applications as solid-state electrolytes, e.g., in batteries. Interestingly, it was found that the mixing of two different plastic-crystalline materials can considerably enhance the ionic dc conductivity, an important benchmark quantity for electrochemical applications. An example is the admixture of different nitriles to succinonitrile, the latter being …
Finding new ionic conductors that enable significant advancements in the development of energy-storage devices is a challenging goal of current material science. Aside of material classes as ionic liquids or amorphous ion conductors, the so-called plastic crystals (PCs) have been shown to be good candidates combining high conductivity and favourable mechanical properties. PCs are formed by molecules whose orientational degrees of freedom still fluctuate despite the material exhibits a well-defined crystalline lattice. Here we show that the conductivity of Li+ ions in succinonitrile, the most p…
The optical reflectivity of Pb$_{0.865}$Sn$_{0.135}$Se and Pb$_{0.75}$Sn$_{0.25}$Se solid solutions was measured in the THz spectral region energetically corresponding to bulk optical phonon excitations and in the temperature range from 40 K to 280 K. The analysis of Pb$_{0.75}$Sn$_{0.25}$Se data performed within the dynamic dielectric function formalism revealed a new effect due to the electron-phonon coupling resulting in resonant changes of LO phonon frequency for energy gap equal to zero or to LO phonon energy. This effect is absent for Pb$_{0.865}$Sn$_{0.135}$Se that exhibits an open ener…
Ionically-conducting plastic crystals are possible candidates for solid-state electrolytes in energy-storage devices. Interestingly, the admixture of larger molecules to the most prominent molecular PC electrolyte, succinonitrile, was shown to drastically enhance its ionic conductivity. Therefore, binary mixtures seem to be a promising way to tune the conductivity of such solid-state electrolytes. However, to elucidate the general mechanisms of ionic charge transport in plastic crystals and the influence of mixing, a much broader data base is needed. In the present work, we investigate mixture…
Crystalline black nitrogen (BN) is an allotrope of nitrogen with the black phosphorus (BP) structure recently synthesized at high pressure by two independent research groups [Ji et al., Sci. Adv. 6, eaba9206 (2020); Laniel et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 216001 (2020)]. Here, we present a systematic study of the electronic and optical properties of BN focusing on its comparison with BP. To this end, we use the state-of-the-art quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ approach with vertex corrections in both the electronic and optical channels. Despite many similarities, the properties of BN are found …
