The genesis of lasing, as an evolution of the laser hybrid eigenstates comprised of electromagnetic modes and atomic polarization, is considered. It is shown that the start of coherent generation at the laser threshold is preceded by the formation of a special hybrid state at the lasing pre-threshold. This special state is characterized by an enhanced coupling among excited atoms and electromagnetic modes. This leads to an increase in the rate of stimulated emission in the special state and, ultimately, to lasing. At the lasing pre-threshold, the transformation of hybrid eigenstates has the features of an exceptional point (EP) observed in non-Hermitian systems. The special state is formed when eigenfrequencies of two hybrid states coalesce or come close to each other. Below the pre-threshold, lifetimes of all hybrid states grow with increasing pump rate. When the pump rate crosses the pre-threshold, resonance trapping occurs with the lifetime of the special state continuing to increase while the lifetimes of all other eigenstates begin to decrease. Consequently, the latter eigenstates do not participate in the lasing. Thus, above the pre-threshold, a laser transitions into the single-mode regime.
We present evidence of ultrafast random lasing from the fluorescent protein DsRed2 embedded in a random one-dimensional cavity. Lasing is achieved when a purified protein solution, placed inside a layered random medium, is optically excited with a femtosecond pump pulse in the direction perpendicular to the plane of random layers. We demonstrate that pumping with ultrashort pulses resulted in a lasing threshold two orders of magnitude lower than that found for nanosecond excitation.
We investigate the rich physics of photonic molecule lasers using a non-Hermitian dimer model. We show that several interesting features, predicted recently using a rigorous steady state ab-initio laser theory (SALT), can be captured by this toy model. In particular, we demonstrate the central role played by exceptional points in both pump-selective lasing and laser self-terminations phenomena. Due to its transparent mathematical structure, our model provides a lucid understanding for how different physical parameters (optical loss, modal coupling between microcavities and pump profiles) affec…
Random lasing is an intriguing phenomenon occurring in disordered structures with optical gain. In such lasers, the scattering of light provides the necessary feedback for lasing action. Because of the light scattering, the random lasing systems emit in all the directions in contrast with the directional emission of the conventional lasers. While this property can be desired in some cases, the control of the emission directionality remains required for most of the applications. Besides, it is well known that the excitation of cavity exciton-polaritons is intrinsically directional. Each wavelen…
The interaction of laser cooled and trapped atoms with resonant light is limited by the linewidth of the excited state of the atom. Another precise optical oscillator is an optical Fabry-Pérot cavity. The combining of cold atoms with optical oscillators is emerging as an area with great potential for precision measurements and the creation of versatile quantum optics systems. Here we show that when driven atoms are in the collectively strongly coupled regime with the cavity, exhibiting vacuum Rabi splitting (VRS), lasing is observed for the emitted light, red detuned from atomic transition. Th…
In a non-Hermitian optical system with loss and gain, an exceptional point (EP) will arise under specific parameters where the eigenvalues and eigenstates exhibit simultaneous coalescence. Here we report a dynamical switching of lasing behavior in a non-Hermitian system composed of coupled microcavities by modulating the EPs. Utilizing the effect of gain, loss and coupling on the eigenstates of coupled microcavities, the evolution path of the eigenvalues related to the laser emission characteristics can be modulated. As a result, the lasing emission property of the coupled cavities exhibits an…
The simultaneous vertical-cavity and random lasing emission properties of a blue-emitting molecular crystal are investigated. The 1,1,4,4-tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene samples, grown by physical vapour transport, feature room-temperature stimulated emission peaked at about 430 nm. Fabry-Pérot and random resonances are primed by the interfaces of the crystal with external media and by defect scatterers, respectively. The analysis of the resulting lasing spectra evidences the existence of narrow peaks due to both the built-in vertical Fabry-Pérot cavity and random lasing in a novel, surface-emitting…
We present a general analysis for finding and characterizing nonlinear exceptional point (EP) lasers above threshold, using steady-state ab-initio Maxwell-Bloch equations. For a system of coupled slabs, we show that a nonlinear EP is obtained for a given ratio between the external pumps in each resonator, and that it is associated with a kink in the output power and lasing frequency, confirming coupled-mode theory predictions. Through numerical linear stability analysis, we confirm that the EP laser can be stable for a large enough inversion relaxation rate. We further show that the EP laser c…
We study a re-configurable nonreciprocal fiber ring cavity setup to generate tunable optical frequency combs. Coherent combs can be obtained by finely exploiting bi-chromatic Brillouin lasing and cascaded four-wave mixing in the nonlinear fiber cavity. We introduce a numerical model of the cavity system, which is validated by comparisons with experiments. Our work shows the importance of the mode pulling effect, controlled by the pump laser detuning, in setting the dynamics of the comb. This effect along with the impact of multimode lasing had been overlooked in previous fiber experiments. We …
Exceptional points, with simultaneous coalescence of eigen-values and eigen-vectors, can be realized with non-Hermitian photonic systems. With the enhanced response, exceptional points have been proposed to improve the performance of photonic sensing. Recently, there are intense debate about the actual sensing advantage of exceptional points. The major concern is that intrinsic noise is also amplified at exceptional points. Here, we aim to clarify the contribution of exceptional points for photonic sensing. This is achieved by analyzing the condition to realize divergent quantum Fisher informa…
We demonstrate lasing into counter-propagating modes of a ring cavity using a gas of cold atoms as a gain medium. The laser operates under the usual conditions of magneto-optical trapping with no additional fields. We characterize the threshold behavior of the laser and measure the second-order optical coherence. The laser emission exhibits directional bistability, switching randomly between clockwise and counter-clockwise modes, and a tuneable nonreciprocity is observed as the atoms are displaced along the cavity axis.
We study the effect of spontaneous emission and incoherent atomic pumping on the nonlinear semiclassical dynamics of the unbalanced Dicke model -- a generalization of the Dicke model that features independent coupling strengths for the co- and counter-rotating interaction terms. As well as the ubiquitous superradiant behavior the Dicke model is well-known for, the addition of spontaneous emission combined with the presence of strong counter-rotating terms creates laser-like behavior termed counter-lasing. These states appear in the semiclassical model as stable periodic orbits. We perform a co…
We measure the lasing dynamics of single and coupled photonic crystal nanocavity array lasers fabricated in the indium gallium arsenide phosphide material system. Under short optical excitation, single cavity lasers produce pulses as fast as 11 ps (FWHM), while coupled cavity lasers show significantly longer lasing duration which is not explained by a simple rate equations model. A Finite Difference Time Domain simulation including carrier gain and diffusion suggests that asynchronous lasing across the nanocavity array extends the laser's pulse duration.
The simultaneous existence of coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and lasing is one of the most intriguing features of non-Hermitian photonics. However, the link between CPA lasing and PT symmetry breaking at the exceptional point (EP) needs clarification. In this paper, we study the manifestations of the CPA-laser effect in a PT-symmetric multilayer loss-gain structure using both the transfer-matrix method and numerical simulations of the Maxwell-Bloch equations. We show that the maximal contrast between absorption and amplification at different phase relations between the input waves is reache…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide the most efficient optical gain materials and have potential for making nanolasers with the smallest gain media with lowest energy consumption. But lasing demonstrations based on TMDs have so far been limited to low temperatures. Here, we demonstrate the first room-temperature laser operation in the infrared wavelengths from a monolayer of molybdenum ditelluride on a silicon photonic-crystal nanobeam cavity. Our demonstration is made possible by a unique choice of TMD material with emission wavelength below silicon absorption, combined …
We present experimental and numerical studies of broad-area semiconductor lasers with chaotic ray dynamics. The emission intensity distributions at the cavity boundaries are measured and compared to ray tracing simulations and numerical calculations of the passive cavity modes. We study two different cavity geometries, a D-cavity and a stadium, both of which feature fully chaotic ray dynamics. While the far-field distributions exhibit fairly homogeneous emission in all directions, the emission intensity distributions at the cavity boundary are highly inhomogeneous, reflecting the non-uniform i…
Random lasers are promising in the spectral regime, wherein conventional lasers are unavailable, with advantages of low fabrication costs and applicability of diverse gain materials. However, their practical application is hindered by high threshold powers, low power efficiency, and difficulties in light collection. Here, we demonstrate a power-efficient easy-to-fabricate non-resonant laser using a deep hole on a porous gain material. The laser action in this counterintuitive cavity was enabled by nonresonant feedback from strong diffuse reflections on the inner surface. Additionally, signific…
We experimentally demonstrate the collective emission behavior and suppressed cavity-pulling effect of four-level active optical clock with Cesium atoms. Thermal Cesium atoms in a glass cell velocity selective pumped with a 455.5 nm laser operating at 6S$_{1/2}$ to 7P$_{3/2}$ transition are used as lasing medium. Population inverted Cesium atoms between 7S$_{1/2}$ and 6P$_{3/2}$ levels are optical weakly coupled by a pair cavity mirrors working at deep bad-cavity regime with a finesse of 4.3, and the ratio between cavity bandwidth and gain bandwidth is approximately 45. With increased 455.5 nm…
We propose the new concept of a switchable multimode microlaser. As a generic, realistic model of a multimode microresonator a system of two coupled defects in a two-dimensional photonic crystal is considered. We demonstrate theoretically that lasing of the cavity into one selected resonator mode can be caused by injecting an appropriate optical pulse at the onset of laser action (injection seeding). Temporal mode-to-mode switching by re-seeding the cavity after a short cool-down period is demonstrated by direct numerical solution. A qualitative analytical explanation of the mode switching in …
A new class of laser, which harnesses coherence in both light and atoms, is possible with the use of ultra-cold alkaline earth atoms trapped in an optical lattice inside an optical cavity. Different lasing regimes, including superradiance, superradiant and conventional lasing, are distinguished by the relative coherence stored in the atoms and in the cavity mode. We analyze the physics in two different experimentally achievable regions of the superradiant lasing regime. Our calculations confirm the narrow linewidth of superradiant lasing for the doubly forbidden clock transition ${}^3 P_0 \to …
A long existing issue for microdisk lasers is the small spontaneous emission coupling rate (β) in microdisk,. We found that it is due to the coupling of emitter spontaneous emission into competing Fabry-Perot (FP) modes in the microdisk cavity. Based on this analysis, we propose a new type of photonic crystal microdisk (PCM) laser to drastically suppress the photonic density of states in the vertical FP modes. As a result, we obtained a three fold increase of β than previously reported highest β of 0.15 at room temperature. The spontaneous emission control in truncated photonic crystals become…
We numerically performed wave dynamical simulations based on the Maxwell-Bloch (MB) model for a quadrupole-deformed microcavity laser with spatially selective pumping. We demonstrate the appearance of an asymmetric lasing mode whose spatial pattern violates both the x- and y-axes mirror symmetries of the cavity. Dynamical simulations revealed that a lasing mode consisting of a clockwise or counterclockwise rotating-wave component is a stable stationary solution of the MB model. From the results of a passive-cavity mode analysis, we interpret these asymmetric rotating-wave lasing modes by the l…
In a recent work, using a coupled microresonator system with tailored gain and loss parameters B. Peng et al. [Science 346, 328 (2014)] have experimentally reported on an apparently counterintuitive effect in laser theory, namely the possibility to enhance lasing by increasing loss in the system. The observed phenomenon was related to the existence of an exceptional point in the system and was presented somehow as an unexpected and novel effect, especially by some reporters and scientific blogs. In this communication it is pointed out that the phenomenon of loss-induced lasing does not come as…
Sub-Poisson field with much reduced fluctuations in a cavity can boost quantum precision measurements via cavity-enhanced light-matter interactions. Strong coupling between an atom and a cavity mode has been utilized to generate highly sub-Poisson fields. However, a macroscopic number of optical intracavity photons with more than 3dB variance reduction in a setting of laser has not been possible. Here, we report sub-Poisson field lasing in a microlaser operating with hundreds of atoms with well-regulated atom-cavity coupling and interaction time. Its photon-number variance was 4dB below the st…
Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) have made indispensable contributions to the development of modern optoelectronic technologies. However, arbitrary beam shaping of VCSELs within a compact system still remains inaccessible till now. The emerging ultra-thin flat optical structures, namely metasurfaces, offer a powerful technique to manipulate electromagnetic fields with subwavelength spatial resolution. Here, we show that the monolithic integration of dielectric metasurfaces with VCSELs enables remarkable arbitrary control of the laser beam profiles, including self-collimation, B…
Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the development of small-footprint lasers for potential applications in small-volume sensing and on-chip optical communications. Surface-plasmons, electromagnetic modes evanescently confined to metal-dielectric interfaces, offer an effective route to achieving lasing at nanometer-scale dimensions when resonantly amplified in contact with a gain-medium. Here, we achieve visible frequency ultra-narrow linewidth lasing at room-temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated w…
We investigate the nonlinear optical features of a graphene sheet embedded in an active cavity and we show that, when tuned near its lasing threshold, the cavity is able to isolate the spatially localized graphene nonlinearity thus producing a very strong nonlinear device response with multi-valued features. As opposed to standard situations where the small thickness of the graphene sheet hampers its remarkable nonlinear optical properties to be exploited, in our scheme the strong nonlinear optical regime is mainly triggered by the very intrinsic planar localization of graphene nonlinearity. T…
We have developed a scattering-matrix approach for numerical calculation of resonant states and Q-values of a nonideal optical disk cavity of an arbitrary shape and of an arbitrary varying refraction index. The developed method has been applied to study the effect of surface roughness and inhomogeneity of the refraction index on Q-values of microdisk cavities for lasing applications. We demonstrate that even small surface roughness can lead to a drastic degradation of high-Q cavity modes by many orders of magnitude. The results of numerical simulation are analyzed and explained in terms of wav…
In this work, we study the lasing conditions of the transverse electric (TE) modes of micro- and nanotubes coated internally with a thin metallic layer. This geometry may tackle some of the problems of nanolasers and spasers as it allows the recycling of the active medium while providing a tunable plasmonic cavity. The system presents two types of TE modes: cavity modes (CMs) and whispering-gallery modes (WGMs). On the one hand, we show that the lasing of WGM is only possible in nanoscale tubes. On the other hand, for tubes of some micrometers of diameter, we found that the system presents a l…
Recent studies on non-Hermitian optical systems having exceptional points (EPs) have revealed a host of unique characteristics associated with these singularities, including unidirectional invisibility, chiral mode switching and laser self-termination, to mention just a few examples. The vast majority of these works focused either on passive systems or active structures where the EPs were accessed below the lasing threshold, i.e. when the system description is inherently linear. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that EP singularities in coupled semiconductor nanolasers can be accesse…
The lasing behavior of one dimensional GaAs nanobeam cavities with embedded InAs quantum dots is studied at room temperature. Lasing is observed throughout the quantum dot PL spectrum, and the wavelength dependence of the threshold is calculated. We study the cavity lasers under both 780 nm and 980 nm pump, finding thresholds as low as 0.3 uW and 19 uW for the two pump wavelengths, respectively. Finally, the nanobeam cavity laser wavelengths are tuned by up to 7 nm by employing a fiber taper in near proximity to the cavities. The fiber taper is used both to efficiently pump the cavity and coll…
PT-symmetry in optics is a condition whereby the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index across a photonic structure are deliberately balanced. This balance can lead to a host of novel optical phenomena, such as unidirectional invisibility, loss-induced lasing, single-mode lasing from multimode resonators, and non-reciprocal effects in conjunction with nonlinearities. Because PT-symmetry has been thought of as fragile, experimental realizations to date have been usually restricted to on-chip micro-devices. Here, we demonstrate that certain features of PT-symmetry are sufficiently robu…
It was widely accepted that embedding of metallic layers into optoelectronic structures is detrimental to lasing due absorption in metal. However, recently macroscopic optical coherence and lasing was observed in microcavities with intra-cavity single metallic layer. Here we propose the design of the of microcavity-type structure with two intra-cavity metallic layers which could serve as contacts for electrical pumping. The design of optical modes based on utilizing peculiarities of Tamm plasmon provides vanishing absorption due to fixing of the node of electric field of optical mode to metall…
For a fully chaotic two-dimensional (2D) microcavity laser, we present a theory that guarantees both the existence of a stable single-mode lasing state and the nonexistence of a stable multimode lasing state, under the assumptions that the cavity size is much larger than the wavelength and the external pumping power is sufficiently large. It is theoretically shown that these universal spectral characteristics arise from the synergistic effect of two different kinds of nonlinearities: deformation of the cavity shape and mode interaction due to a lasing medium. Our theory is based on the linear …
Topological photonics provides a fundamental framework for robust manipulation of light, including directional transport and localization with built-in immunity to disorder. Combined with an optical gain, active topological cavities hold special promise for a design of light-emitting devices. Most studies to date have focused on lasing at topological edges of finite systems or domain walls. Recently discovered higher-order topological phases enable strong high-quality confinement of light at the corners. Here we demonstrate lasing action of corner states in a nanophotonic topological cavity. W…
A formula for the laser linewidth of arbitrary cavities in the multimode non-linear regime is derived from a scattering analysis of the solutions to semiclassical laser theory. The theory generalizes previous treatments of the effects of gain and openness described by the Petermann factor. The linewidth is expressed using quantities based on the non-linear scattering matrix, which can be computed from steady-state ab initio laser theory; unlike previous treatments, no passive cavity or phenomenological parameters are involved. We find that low cavity quality factor, combined with significant d…
In this work, we report the first account of monolithically-fabricated vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) of densely-packed, orientation-controlled, atomically flat colloidal quantum wells (CQWs) using a self-assembly method and demonstrate single-mode lasing from a record thin colloidal gain medium with a film thickness of 7 nm under femtosecond optical excitation. We used specially engineered CQWs to demonstrate these hybrid CQW-VCSELs consisting of only a few layers to a single monolayer of CQWs and achieved the lasing from these thin gain media by thoroughly modeling and impl…
We investigate the lasing action in coupled multi-row nanopillar waveguides of periodic or fractal structure using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, coupled to the laser rate equations. Such devices exhibit band splitting with distinct and controllable supermode formation. We demonstrate that selective lasing into each of the supermodes is possible. The structure acts as a microlaser with selectable wavelength. Lasing mode selection is achieved by means of coaxial injection seeding with a Gaussian signal of appropriate transverse amplitude and phase profiles. Based on this we pr…
Optical lattice clock systems with ultra-cold strontium-88 atoms have been used to demonstrate superradiant lasing and magnetic field-controlled optical transmission. We explain these phenomena theoretically with a rigorous model for three-level atoms coupled to a single cavity mode. We identify a class of dark atom-light dressed states which become accessible due to mixing with bright dressed states in the presence of a magnetic field. We predict that these states, under moderate incoherent pumping, lead to lasing with a linewidth of only tens of Hz, orders of magnitude smaller than the cavit…
We propose to use the resonant enhancement of the parametric instability in an optomechanical system of two optical modes coupled to a mechanical oscillator to prepare mechanical states with sub-Poissonian phonon statistics. Strong single photon coupling is not required. The requirements regarding sideband resolution, circulating cavity power and environmental temperature are in reach with state of the art parameters of optomechanical crystals. Phonon antibunching can be verfied in a Hanburry-Brown-Twiss measurement on the output field of the optomechanical cavity.

Integrated optomechanical cavities stand as a promising means to interface mechanical motion and guided optical modes. State-of-the-art demonstrations rely on optical and mechanical modes tightly confined of in micron-scale areas to achieve strong optomechanical coupling. However, the need for tight optomechanical confinement and the general use of suspended devices hinders interaction with external devices, limiting the potential for the implementation of complex circuits. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new approach for optomechanical cavities coupling free-propagating surface acoustic wa…
We study laser generation in 1D distributed feedback lasers with amplifying and lossy layers. We show that when the lasing frequency differs from the transition frequencies of the amplifying medium, loss induced lasing may occur due to the broadening of the resonator mode with increasing loss in the absorbing layers. This broadening leads to a shift in the lasing frequency towards the transition frequency. As a result, the cavity mode interaction with the amplifying medium is enhanced, and the lasing threshold is lowered.
Solution-based perovskite nanoparticles have been intensively studied in past few years due to their applications in both photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. Here, based on the common ground between the solution-based perovskite and random lasers, we have studied the mirrorless lasing actions in self-assembled perovskite nanoparticles. After the synthesis from solution, discrete lasing peaks have been observed from the optically pumped perovskites without any well-defined cavity boundaries. The obtained quality (Q) factors and thresholds of random lasers are around 500 and 60 uJ/cm2, resp…
We study spectral and far-field characteristics of lasing emission from stadium-shaped semiconductor (InGaAsP) microlasers. We demonstrate that the correspondence between a lasing far-field emission pattern and the result of a ray simulation becomes better as the number of lasing modes increases. This phenomenon is reproduced in the wave calculation of the cavity modes.
The quality factor (Q), mode volume (Veff), and room-temperature lasing threshold of microdisk cavities with embedded quantum dots (QDs) are investigated. Finite element method simulations of standing wave modes within the microdisk reveal that Veff can be as small as 2(lambda/n)^3 while maintaining radiation-limited Qs in excess of 10^5. Microdisks of diameter D=2 microns are fabricated in an AlGaAs material containing a single layer of InAs QDs with peak emission at lambda = 1317 nm. For devices with Veff ~2 (lambda/n)^3, Qs as high as 1.2 x 10^5 are measured passively in the 1.4 micron band…
