Random lasing is an intriguing phenomenon occurring in disordered structures with optical gain. In such lasers, the scattering of light provides the necessary feedback for lasing action. Because of the light scattering, the random lasing systems emit in all the directions in contrast with the directional emission of the conventional lasers. While this property can be desired in some cases, the control of the emission directionality remains required for most of the applications. Besides, it is well known that the excitation of cavity exciton-polaritons is intrinsically directional. Each wavelength (energy) of the cavity polariton, which is a superposition of an excitonic state and a cavity mode, corresponds to a well-defined propagation direction. We demonstrate in this article that coupling the emission of a 2D random laser with a cavity polaritonic resonance permits to control the direction of emission of the random laser. This results in a directional random lasing whose emission angle with respect to the microcavity axis can be tuned in a large range of angles by varying the cavity detuning. The emission angles reached experimentally in this work are 15.8$^\circ$ and 22.4$^\circ$.
We theoretically propose directional, low-threshold plasmon lasing in both the near-infrared and visible wavelengths by utilizing spatially coherent surface plasmon polaritons on a meta-surface. The gain strength required for threshold lasing can be tuned down to a large extent through compatible structural parameters. Our calculations show that no more than 65 cm$^{-1}$ at 193.5 THz (1.55 $μ$m) or 267 cm$^{-1}$at 474THz (0.633 $μ$m) of gain coefficient is sufficient to compensate for the dissipation of metal films for threshold lasing; these values are smaller than any reported studies at the…
Intersubband polariton -- LO phonon interaction in mid-infrared non-dispersive cavities: experimental demonstration of spontaneous scattering and perspectives towards polariton lasing
The authors show clear experimental evidence of lasing of exciton polaritons confined in L3 photonic crystal cavities. The samples are based on an InP membrane in air containing five InAsP quantum wells. Polariton lasing is observed with thresholds as low as 120 nW, below the Mott transition, while conventional photon lasing is observed for a pumping power one to three orders of magnitude higher.
Planar microcavities filled with active materials containing excitonic resonances host radiative exciton-polariton (polariton) modes with in-plane wave vectors within the light cone. They also host at least one mode guided in the cavity plane by total internal reflection and which is not radiatively coupled to the vacuum modes except through defects or sample edges. We show that polariton lasing mediated by polariton stimulated scattering can occur concomitantly in both types of modes in a microcavity. By adjusting the detuning between the exciton and the radiative photon mode one can favor po…
The similarities and differences between polariton condensation in microcavities and standard lasing in a semiconductor cavity structure are reviewed. The recent experiments on "photon condensation" are also reviewed.
Microcavity polaritons are bosonic light-matter particles that can emit coherent radiation without electronic population inversion via bosonic scattering. This phenomenon, known as polariton lasing, strongly depends on the polaritons' confinement. Shrinking the polaritons' mode volume increases the interactions mediated by their excitonic part, and thereby the density-dependent blueshift of the polariton to a higher energy is enhanced. Previously, polariton lasing has been demonstrated in micropillars with diameters larger than three microns, in grating based cavities, fiber cavities and photo…
Following experimental realizations of room temperature polariton lasing with organic molecules, we present a microscopic model that allows us to explore the crossover from weak to strong matter-light coupling. We consider a non-equilibrium Dicke-Holstein model, including both strong coupling to vibrational modes and strong matter-light coupling, providing the phase diagram of this model in the thermodynamic limit. We discuss the mechanism of polariton lasing, uncovering a process of self-tuning, and identify the relation and distinction between regular dye lasers and organic polariton lasers.
Kagome lattices supporting Dirac cone and flatband dispersions are well known as a highly frustrated, two-dimensional lattice system. Particularly the flatbands therein are attracting continuous interest based on their link to topological order, correlations and frustration. In this work, we realize coupled microcavity implementations of Kagome lattices hosting exciton-polariton quantum fluids of light. We demonstrate precise control over the dispersiveness of the flatband as well as selective condensation of exciton-polaritons into the flatband. Subsequently, we focus on the spatial and tempo…
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) lasing requires population inversion, it is inefficient and possesses poor spectral properties. We develop an inversion-less concept for a quantum plasmonic waveguide that exploits unidirectional superradiant SPP emission of radiation to produce intense coherent surface plasmon beams. Our scheme includes a resonantly driven cold atomic medium in a lossless dielectric situated above an ultra-low loss negative index metamaterial~(NIMM) layer. We propose generating unidirectional superradiant radiation of the plasmonic field within an atomic medium and a NIMM lay…
Topological photonics provides an important platform for the development of photonic devices with robust disorder-immune light transport and controllable helicity. Mixing photons with excitons (or polaritons) gives rise to nontrivial polaritonic bands with chiral modes, allowing the manipulation of helical lasers in strongly coupled light-matter systems. In this work, we demonstrate helical polariton lasing from topological valleys of an organic anisotropic microcrystalline cavity based on tailored local nontrivial band geometry. This polariton laser emits light of different helicity along dif…
Controlling light-matter interactions in solid-state systems has motivated intense research to produce bosonic quasi-particles known as exciton-polaritons, which requires strong coupling between excitons and cavity photons. Ultra-low threshold coherent light emitters can be achieved through lasing from exciton-polariton condensates, but this generally requires sophisticated device structures and cryogenic temperatures. Polaritonic nanolasers operating at room temperature lie on the crucial path of related research, not only for the exploration of polariton physics at the nanoscale but also for…
Metallic nanostructures provide a toolkit for the generation of coherent light below the diffraction limit. Plasmonic based lasing relies on the population inversion of emitters (such as organic fluorophores) along with feedback provided by plasmonic resonances. In this regime, known as weak light matter coupling, the radiative characteristics of the system can be described by the Purcell effect. Strong light matter coupling between the molecular excitons and electromagnetic field generated by the plasmonic structures leads to the formation of hybrid quasi-particles known as plasmon exciton po…
We develop a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii approach to the driven-dissipative dynamics of intersubband polaritons in patterned planar microcavities where the cavity mode is strongly coupled to an intersubband transition in doped quantum wells. Substantial differences with respect to the case of interband excitonic polaritons are highlighted, in particular the non-Markovian features of the radiative decay. The accuracy of the method is validated on the linear reflection properties of the cavity, that quantitatively reproduce experimental observations. The theoretical framework is then applied in…
Topological concepts have been applied to a wide range of fields in order to successfully describe the emergence of robust edge modes that are unaffected by scattering or disorder. In photonics, indications of lasing from topologically protected modes with improved overall laser characteristics were observed. Here, we study exciton-polariton microcavity traps that are arranged in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice and form a topological defect mode from which we unequivocally observe highly coherent polariton lasing. Additionally, we confirm the excitonic contribution to the polari…
We demonstrate an electrically controlled coherent random lasing with silver nano-particles dispersed in a dye-doped nematic liquid crystal (NLC), in which external electric field dependent emission intensity and frequency-splitting are recorded. A modified rate equation model is proposed to interpret the observed coherent lasing, which is a manifestation of double enhancements, caused by the plasmon-polariton near-fields of Ag particles, on the population inversion of laser dye molecules and the optical energy density of lasing modes. The noticeable quenching of lasing resonances in a weak ap…
We study the dynamics of multimode polariton lasing in organic microcavities by using a second-order cumulant equation approach. By inspecting the time evolution of the photon mode occupations, we show that if multiple lasing peaks are observed in time-integrated mode occupations, the reason can be either bi-modal lasing or temporal switching between several modes. The former takes place within a narrow range of parameters while the latter occurs more widely. We find that the origin of the temporal switching is different in the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. At weak coupling slope efficien…
Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the development of small-footprint lasers for potential applications in small-volume sensing and on-chip optical communications. Surface-plasmons, electromagnetic modes evanescently confined to metal-dielectric interfaces, offer an effective route to achieving lasing at nanometer-scale dimensions when resonantly amplified in contact with a gain-medium. Here, we achieve visible frequency ultra-narrow linewidth lasing at room-temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated w…
We show that, by monitoring the free carrier reservoir in a GaAs-based quantum well microcavity under nonresonant pulsed optical pumping, lasing supported by a fermionic reservoir (photon lasing) can be distinguished from lasing supported by a reservoir of bosons (polariton lasing). Carrier densities are probed by measuring the photocurrent between lateral contacts deposited directly on the quantum wells of a microcavity that are partially exposed by wet chemical etching. We identify two clear thresholds in the input-output characteristic of the photoluminescence signal which can be attributed…
We predict the existence of non-Hermitian topologically protected end states in a one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensate lattice, where topological transitions are driven by the laser pump pattern. We show that the number of end states can be described by a Chern number and a topological invariant based on the Wilson loop. We find that such transitions arise due to {\it enforced exceptional points} which can be predicted directly from the bulk Bloch wave functions. This allows us to establish a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence for non-Hermitian systems and to compute the phase di…
Lead-halide perovskites are highly promising for various optoelectronic applications including laser devices. However, fundamental photophysics describing the lasing behaviour in this material family have not been investigated systematically, and thus the detailed lasing mechanism remains veiled. Here, we demonstrate that an all-inorganic perovskite shows a lasing emission based on a novel principle. A series of photoluminescence experiment results reveals that the excited state of CsPbBr3 single crystal exhibits free carrier nature. In a form of microcavity, on the other hand, the CsPbBr3 sin…
Organic exciton-photon polariton lasers have recently been shown to be remarkable candidates for the realization of efficient sources of coherent light operating at room temperature. While their thresholds are now comparable with conventional organic photon lasers, tuning of molecular conformation and orientation as a means to further enhance their performance remains largely unexplored. Here, we first report a two-fold reduction in the threshold of a polariton laser based on a high-Q microcavity filled with an active layer of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) when 15% β-phase conformation is in…
Observations of polariton condensation in semiconductor microcavities suggest that polaritons can be exploited as a novel type of laser with low input-power requirements. The low-excitation regime is approximately equivalent to thermal equilibrium, and a higher excitation results in more dominant nonequilibrium features. Although standard photon lasing has been experimentally observed in the high excitation regime, e-h pair binding can still remain even in the high-excitation regime theoretically. Therefore, the photoluminescence with a different photon lasing mechanism is predicted to be diff…
We report on the simultaneous observation of spontaneous symmetry breaking and long-range spatial coherence both in the strong and the weak-coupling regime in a semiconductor microcavity. Under pulsed excitation, the formation of a stochastic order parameter is observed in polariton and photon lasing regimes. Single-shot measurements of the Stokes vector of the emission exhibit the buildup of stochastic polarization. Below threshold, the polarization noise does not exceed 10%, while above threshold we observe a total polarization of up to 50% after each excitation pulse, while the polarization…
We consider the fundamental problem of high temperature phase transitions in the system of high density two-level atoms off-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity. OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition we analyze the problem of thermodynamically equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing a real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of atomic DSs thermalization pr…
We study a model of a photon mode dipole-coupled to a medium of two-level oscillators in a microcavity in the presence of dephasing processes introduced by coupling to external baths. Decoherence processes can be classified as pair-breaking or non-pair-breaking in analogy with magnetic or non-magnetic impurities in superconductors. In the absence of dephasing, the ground state of the model is a polariton condensate with a gap in the excitation spectrum. Increase of the pair-breaking parameter $γ$ reduces the gap, which becomes zero at a critical value $γ_{C1}$; for large $γ$, the conventional …
We demonstrate condensation of microcavity polaritons with a very sharp threshold occuring at two orders of magnitude lower pump intensity than previous demonstrations of condensation. The long cavity-lifetime and trapping and pumping geometries are crucial to the realization of this low threshold. Polariton condensation, or "polariton lasing" has long been proposed as a promising source of coherent light at lower threshold than traditional lasing, and these results suggest methods to bring this threshold even lower.
Semiconductor nanowire lasers can be subject to modifications of their lasing threshold resulting from a variation of their environment. A promising choice is to use metallic substrates to gain access to low-volume Surface-Plasmon-Polariton (SPP) modes. We introduce a simple, yet quantitatively precise model that can serve to describe mode competition in nanowire lasers on metallic substrates. We show that an aluminum substrate can decrease the lasing threshold for ZnO nanowire lasers while for a silver substrate, the threshold increases compared with a dielectric substrate. Generalizing from …
Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides possess valley dependent functionalities that are usually available only at crogenic temperatures, constrained by various valley depolarization scatterings. The formation of exciton polaritons by coherently superimposing excitons and microcavity photons potentially harnesses the valley polarized polariton polariton interactions for novel valleytronics devices. Robust EPs have been demonstrated at room temperature in TMDs microcavity, however, the coherent polariton lasing and condensation remain elusive. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time…
Microcavity polaritons in the lasing regime undergo a spontaneous symmetry breaking transition resulting in coherent emission with a well defined polarization. The order parameter is thus a vector describing both the laser global phase and polarization. Using an ultrafast single-shot detection technique we show that polariton lasing in GaAs-based microcavities presents a high degree of second order coherence ($g^{(2)}(τ=0) \approx 1$) above threshold, and that the initial polarization is stochastic, taking any possible direction in the Poincaré sphere (linear, elliptical or circular). Once the…
We report polariton lasing in localised gap states in a honeycomb lattice of coupled micropillars. Localisation of the modes is induced by the optical potential created by the excitation beam, requiring no additional engineering of the otherwise homogeneous polariton lattice. The spatial shape of the gap states arises from the interplay of the orbital angular momentum eigenmodes of the cylindrical potential created by the excitation beam and the hexagonal symmetry of the underlying lattice. Our results provide insights into the engineering of defect states in two-dimensional lattices.
Topology describes properties that remain unaffected by smooth distortions. Its main hallmark is the emergence of edge states localized at the boundary between regions characterized by distinct topological invariants. This feature offers new opportunities for robust trapping of light in nano- and micro-meter scale systems subject to fabrication imperfections and to environmentally induced deformations. Here we show lasing in such topological edge states of a one-dimensional lattice of polariton micropillars that implements an orbital version of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian. We further …
Exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities generate fascinating effects such as long-range spatial coherence and Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC), which are attractive for their potential use in low threshold lasers, vortices and slowing light, etc. However, currently most of exciton-polariton effects either occur at cryogenic temperature or rely on expensive cavity fabrication procedures. Further exploring new semiconductor microcavities with stronger exciton photon interaction strength is extensively needed. Herein, we demonstrate room temperature photon exciton strong coupling in hyb…
We implement externally excited ZnO Mie resonators in a framework of a generalized Hubbard Hamiltonian to investigate the lifetimes of excitons and exciton-polaritons out of thermodynamical equilibrium. Our results are derived by a Floquet-Keldysh-Green's formalism with Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) and a second order iterative perturbation theory solver (IPT). We find that the Fano resonance which originates from coupling of the continuum of electronic density of states to the semiconductor Mie resonator yields polaritons with lifetimes between 0.6 ps and 1.45 ps. These results are compa…
Fluorescent proteins (FPs) have recently emerged as a serious contender for realizing ultralow threshold room temperature exciton-polariton condensation and lasing. Our contribution investigates the thermalization of FP microcavity exciton-polaritons upon optical pumping under ambient conditions. We realize polariton cooling using a new FP molecule, called mScarlet, coupled strongly to the optical modes in a Fabry Perot cavity. Interestingly, at the threshold excitation energy (fluence) of ~ 9 nJ/pulse (15.6 mJ/cm2), we observe an effective temperature, Teff ~ 350 +/- 35 K close to the lattice…

We study theoretically interaction of optically-pumped excitons with acoustic waves in planar semiconductor nanostructures in the strongly nonlinear regime. We start with the multimode optomechanical lasing regime for optical pump frequency {above} the exciton resonance and demonstrate broadband chaotic-like lasing spectra. We also predict formation of propagating optomechanical domain walls driven by optomechanical nonlinearity for the optical pump {below} the exciton resonance. Stability conditions for the domain walls are examined analytically and are in agreement with direct numerical simu…

We develop a theory of spin fluctuations of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity under the non-resonant unpolarized pumping. It is shown that the corresponding spin noise is sensitive to the scattering rates in the system, occupation of the ground state, statistics of polaritons, and interactions. The spin noise spectrum drastically narrows in the polariton lasing regime due to formation of a polariton condensate, while its shape can become non-Lorentzian owing to interaction-induced spin decoherence.
