Topological concepts have been applied to a wide range of fields in order to successfully describe the emergence of robust edge modes that are unaffected by scattering or disorder. In photonics, indications of lasing from topologically protected modes with improved overall laser characteristics were observed. Here, we study exciton-polariton microcavity traps that are arranged in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice and form a topological defect mode from which we unequivocally observe highly coherent polariton lasing. Additionally, we confirm the excitonic contribution to the polariton lasing by applying an external magnetic field. These systematic experimental findings of robust lasing and high temporal coherence are meticulously reproduced by a combination of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii model and a Lindblad master equation model. Thus, by using the comparatively simple SSH geometry, we are able to describe and control the exciton-polariton topological lasing, allowing for a deeper understanding of topological effects on microlasers.
Vector vortex beams are a class of optical beams with singularities in their space-variant polarization. Vector vortex beam lasers have applications in many areas including imaging and communication, where vertical-cavity lasers emitting Gaussian beams have been most widely used so far. Generation of vector vortex beams from vertical-cavity lasers has required external control or modulation. Here, by utilizing a polarization-selective subwavelength grating as one of the reflectors in a vertical semiconductor microcavity, we design the spin textures of the polariton mode and demonstrate polarit…
A new platform for fabricating polariton lasers operating at room temperature is introduced: nitride-based distributed Bragg reflectors epitaxially grown on patterned silicon substrates. The patterning allows for an enhanced strain relaxation thereby enabling to stack a large number of crack-free AlN/AlGaN pairs and achieve cavity quality factors of several thousands with a large spatial homogeneity. GaN and ZnO active regions are epitaxially grown thereon and the cavities are completed with top dielectric Bragg reflectors. The two structures display strong-coupling and polariton lasing at roo…
In the field of spin-controlled semiconductor lasers, massive effort has been focused upon materials with long spin relaxation times (~ns). In contrast, we demonstrate room-temperature spin-polarized ultrafast pulsed lasing in InGaAs quantum wells (~10 ps) embedded within a GaAs microcavity. The microcavity studied here is similar to vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) used in optical communication. Unlike a VCSEL, the present polariton laser has nonlinear output and energy shifts owing to the mixing of the free-carrier polarization and cavity light field. At room temperature, we o…
The coherence of polaritons plays a fundamental role in numerous recent experimental observations, from strong coupling to Bose-Einstein condensation, but accessing the coherence of polaritons is a difficult task due to the high energy of plasmons and excitons. However, surface phonon polaritons offer similar promises at much lower energy. Here, we demonstrate the possibility to use visible ultrafast lasers to generate and time resolve coherent surface phonon polaritons in nanowires. We show that these modes are generated through the ultrafast screening of the surface depletion field. By compa…
We develop a concept of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) based four-wave mixing (4WM), in which a laser-launched evanescent SPP field is utilized as a coherent pumping source to involve directly in a nonlinear 4WM process at the dielectric/metal interface. Conversion efficiency of the resulting 4WM radiation is expected to be dramatically increased due to the local-field enhancement effect. Feasibility of implementing this concept at the air/gold film and graphene flake/gold film interfaces is further examined by numerical simulations. The concept shows intriguing promise for applications in …
Interactions of few-cycle terahertz pulses with the induced optical polarization in a quantum-well microcavity reveal that the lower and higher exciton-polariton modes together with the optically forbidden 2p-exciton state form a unique Λ-type three-level system. Pronounced nonlinearities are observed via time-resolved strong-terahertz and weak-optical excitation spectroscopy and explained with a fully microscopic theory. The results show that the terahertz pulses strongly couple the exciton-polariton states to the 2p-exciton state while no resonant transition between the two polariton levels …
We report on the simultaneous observation of spontaneous symmetry breaking and long-range spatial coherence both in the strong and the weak-coupling regime in a semiconductor microcavity. Under pulsed excitation, the formation of a stochastic order parameter is observed in polariton and photon lasing regimes. Single-shot measurements of the Stokes vector of the emission exhibit the buildup of stochastic polarization. Below threshold, the polarization noise does not exceed 10%, while above threshold we observe a total polarization of up to 50% after each excitation pulse, while the polarization…
A laser threshold is determined by the gain condition, which has been progressively reduced by the use of heterostructures and of quantum confinement. The polariton laser is the ultimate step of this evolution: coherent emission is obtained from the spontaneous decay of an exciton-polariton condensate, without the achievement of any gain condition. ZnO, with its unique excitonic properties, is the best choice for a blue/UV-emitting polariton laser device. We report on the fabrication of a new family of fully hybrid microcavities that combine the best-quality ZnO material available (bulk substr…
Exciton-polaritons can be created in semiconductor microcavities. These quasiparticles act as weakly interacting bosons with very light mass, of the order of $10^{-4}$ times the vacuum electron mass. Many experiments have shown effects which can be viewed as due to a Bose-Einstein condensate, or quasicondensate, of these particles. The lifetime of the particles in most of those experiments has been of the order of a few picoseconds, leading to significant nonequilibrium effects. By increasing the cavity quality, we have made new samples with longer polariton lifetimes. With a photon lifetime o…
Integration of optical elements into scalable chips has been at the center of a large effort in recent years. Concurrently, the separation between the diverse functions, namely switches, detectors or emitters increases significantly the final number of components on chip. Such technical limitations may be overcome by introducing agile devices able, for example, to simultaneously detect, process and emit a coherent signal. Such a pathway has been explored with different approaches that bear advantages and drawbacks. Polaritons have often been proposed as promising candidates for multifunctional…
Polaritons in semiconductor microcavities can experience a Bose-Einstein condensation experimentally detectable in the spectrum of the emitted light. Scattering with noncondensed particles as well as self-interaction in the condensate provoke phase-diffusion limiting the coherence of the polariton condensate. We present a theoretical analysis of self-interaction effects on the lineshape of the emission from a polariton laser. Our calculations, for CdTe microcavities, show that there is an optimum pump at which the linewidth of the emitted light is reduced down to 1 $μ$ eV.
We demonstrate edge-emitting exciton-polariton (polariton) lasing from 5 to 300 K and amplification of non-radiative guided polariton modes within ZnO waveguides. The mode dispersion below and above the lasing threshold is directly measured using gratings present on top of the sample, fully demonstrating the polaritonic nature of the lasing modes. The threshold is found to be similar to that of radiative polarions in planar ZnO microcavities. These results open broad perspectives for guided polaritonics by allowing an easier and more straightforward implementation of polariton integrated circu…
Microcavity exciton polariton systems can have a wide range of macroscopic quantum effects that may be turned into better photonic technologies. Polariton Bose-Einstein condensation and photon lasing have been widely accepted in the limits of low and high carrier densities, but identification of the expected Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state at intermediate densities remains elusive, as the optical-gain mechanism cannot be directly inferred from existing experiments. Here, using a microcavity with strong polarization selectivity, we gain direct experimental access to the reservoir absorpti…
We demonstrate spin polarized jets in extended systems of ballistic exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities using optical non-resonant excitation geometries. The structure of the spin jets is determined by the digitally reprogrammable, spatially non-uniform, degree of circular polarization of the excitation laser. The presence of the laser excitation, strong particle interactions, and spin-relaxation leads to a tunable spin-dependent potential landscape for polaritons, with the appearance of intricate polarization patterns due to coherent matter-wave interference. Our work…
Terahertz emission between exciton-polariton branches in semiconductor microcavities is expected to be strongly stimulated in the polariton laser regime, due to the high density of particles in the lower state (final state stimulation effect). However, non-radiative scattering processes depopulate the upper state and greatly hinder the efficiency of such terahertz sources. In this work, we suggest a new scheme using multiple microcavities and exploiting the transition between two interband polariton branches located below the exciton level. We compare the non-radiative processes loss rates in …
We develop a quantum model for the calculation of the gain of phonon-polariton intersubband lasers. The polaritonic gain arizes from the interaction between the electrons confined in a quantum well structure and the phonon confined in one layer of the material. Our theoretical approach is based on expressing the crucial matter excitations (intersubband electrons and phonons) in terms of polarisation densities in second quantisation, and treating all non-resonant polarisations with an effective dielectric function. The interaction between the electronic and phononic polarizations is treated per…
The interaction between coherent polaritons and incoherent excitons plays an important role in polariton physics. Using resonant pump-probe spectroscopy with selective excitation of single polariton branches, we investigate the different dephasing mechanisms responsible for generating a long-lived exciton reservoir. As expected, pumping the upper polariton results in a strong dephasing process that leads to the generation of a long lived reservoir. Unexpectedly, we observe an efficient reservoir creation while exciting only the lower polariton branch when the detuning is increased towards posi…
The accurate calculation of laser energy absorption during femto- or picosecond laser pulse experiments is very important for the description of the formation of periodic surface structures. On a rough material surface, a crack or a step edge, ultrashort laser pulses can excite surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), i.e. surface plasmons coupled to a laser-electromagnetic wave. The interference of such plasmon wave and the incoming pulse leads to a periodic modulation of the deposited laser energy on the surface of the sample. In the present work, within the frames of a Two Temperature Model we pro…
The phase and the frequency of an exciton polariton condensate excited by a nonresonant pump can be efficiently manipulated by an external coherent light. Being tuned close to the resonance with the condensate eigenfrequency, the external laser light imposes its frequency to the condensate and locks its phase, thereby manifesting a synchronization effect. The conditions of formation of the phase synchronized regime are determined. The synchronization of a couple of closely spaced polariton condensates by a spatially uniform coherent light is examined. At the moderate strength of the coherent d…

The way molecules absorb, transfer, and emit light can be modified by coupling them to optical cavities. The extent of the modification is often defined by the cavity-molecule coupling strength, which depends on the number of coupled molecules. We experimentally and numerically study the evolution of photoemission from a thin layered J-aggregated molecular material strongly coupled to a Fabry-Perot microcavity as a function of the number of coupled layers. We unveil an important difference between the strong coupling signatures obtained from reflection spectroscopy and from polariton assisted …
We investigate the dynamics of chiral edge states in topological polariton systems under laser driving. Using a model system comprised of topolgically trivial excitons and photons with a chiral coupling proposed by Karzig et al. [Phys. Rev. X 5, 031001 (2015)], we investigate the real-time dynamics of a lattice version of this model driven by a laser pulse. By analyzing the time- and momentum-resolved spectral function, measured by time- and angle-resolved photoluminescence in analogy with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in electronic systems, we find that polaritonic state…
We show that the combined effect of photon emission and Coulomb interactions may drive an exciton-polariton system towards a dynamical coherent state, even without phonon thermalization or any other relaxation mechanism. Exact diagonalization results for a finite system (a multilevel quantum dot interacting with the lowest energy photon mode of a microcavity) are presented in support to this statement.
Cavity quantum electrodynamics advances the coherent control of a single quantum emitter with a quantized radiation field mode, typically piecewise engineered for the highest finesse and confinement in the cavity field. This enables the possibility of strong coupling for chip-scale quantum processing, but till now is limited to few research groups that can achieve the precision and deterministic requirements for these polariton states. Here we observe for the first time coherent polariton states of strong coupled single quantum dot excitons in inherently disordered one-dimensional localized mo…
For a driven-dissipative quantum many-body system prepared in a spontaneous broken-symmetry steady state, in addition to the Goldstone mode the soft fluctuation modes provide important insight into the system's dynamics. Using a microscopic polariton laser theory, we find a rich transformation behavior of discrete and continuum soft modes in a two parameter (pump density and cavity dissipation rate) space. In addition to finding exceptional-point Goldstone companion modes, our theory yields a unified picture of a variety of seemingly disconnected physical concepts including Mott transition, Mo…
We report on the experimental observation of the non-linear analogue of the optical spin Hall effect under highly non-resonant circularly polarized excitation of an exciton polariton condensate in a GaAs/AlGaAs microcavity. Initially circularly polarized polariton condensates propagate over macroscopic distances while the collective condensate spins coherently precess around an effective magnetic field in the sample plane performing up to four complete revolutions.
We study the coherent properties of plasmon polaritons optically excited on periodic nanostructures. The gold grains are coupled to a single mode photonic waveguide which exhibits a dramatically reduced transmission originating from the derived quantum interference. With a nonequilibrium description of Floquet-dressed polaritons we demonstrate the switching of light transmission through the waveguide due to sheer existence of intraband transitions in gold from right above the Fermi level driven by the external laser light.
Steady states reached in a coherently pumped exciton-polariton superfluid are investigated. As the pump parameter is changed, the translational symmetry of the uniform system is spontaneously broken, and various steady patterns of quantized vortices are formed. This is peculiar to nonequilibrium dissipative systems with continuous pumping.
Following the recent observation of localised phonon polaritons in user-defined silicon carbide nano-resonators, here we demonstrate coherent coupling between those localised modes and propagating phonon polaritons bound to the surface of the nano-resonator's substrate. In order to obtain phase-matching, the nano-resonators have been fabricated to serve the double function of hosting the localised modes, while also acting as grating for the propagating ones. The coherent coupling between long lived, optically accessible localised modes, and low-loss propagative ones, opens the way to the desig…
Under adequate conditions, cavity-polaritons form a macroscopic coherent quantum state, known as Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Compared to Wannier-Mott excitons in inorganic semiconductors, the localized Frenkel excitons in organic emitter materials show weaker interaction but stronger coupling, which recently enabled the first realization of BEC at room temperature. However, this required ultrafast optical pumping which limits the applications of organic BECs. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature BEC of cavity-polaritons in simple laminated microcavities filled with the biologically produc…
We describe an experimental system that allows one to easily access the dispersion curve of exciton-polaritons in a microcavity. Our approach is based on two spatial light modulators (SLM), one for changing the excitation angles (momenta), and the other for tuning the excitation wavelength. We show that with this setup, an arbitrary number of states can be excited accurately and that re-configuration of the excitation scheme can be done at high speed.
We demonstrate a regime in which matter-wave condensates of exciton-polaritons trapped in an elliptically shaped two-dimensional potential appear as a coherent mixture of ground and first-excited state of the quantum harmonic oscillator. This system resembles an optically controllable two-level system and produces near terahertz harmonic oscillations of the condensate's center of mass along the major axis of the elliptical trapping potential. The population ratio between the two trap levels is tunable through the excitation laser power and is shown to follow Lotka-Volterra dynamics. We demonst…
We analyse the interaction of exciton and exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavity with a coherent acoustic wave. An analytical solution for the dispersion of excitations of coupled condensate-phonon system is found in the approximation of k-independent interactions. Accounting for k-dependence results in a stronger modification of the dispersion, and even in the appearance of the "roton instability" region.
We study a "strongly-coupled" (SC) polariton system formed between the atom-like intersubband transitions in a semiconductor nanostructure and the THz optical modes that are localised at the edges of a gold aperture. The polaritons can be excited optically, by incoherent excitation with bandgap radiation, and we find that they also coherently scatter the same input laser, to give strikingly sharp "sideband" (SB) spectral peaks in the backscattered spectrum. The SB intensity is a sensitive track of the polariton density and they can be detected down to a quantum noise floor that is more than 25…
We investigate the cross-interactions in a two-component polariton quantum fluid coherently driven by two independent pumping lasers tuned at different energies and momenta. We show that both the hysteresis cycles and the ON/OFF threshold of one polariton signal can be entirely controlled by a second polariton fluid. Furthermore, we study the ultrafast switching dynamics of a driven polariton state, demonstrating the ability to control the polariton population with an external laser pulse, in less than a few picoseconds.
We present a time-resolved study of energy relaxation and trapping dynamics of polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity ridge. The combination of two non-resonant, pulsed laser sources in a GaAs ridge-shaped microcavity gives rise to profuse quantum phenomena where the repulsive potentials created by the lasers allow the modulation and control of the polariton flow. We analyze in detail the dependence of the dynamics on the power of both lasers and determine the optimum conditions for realizing an all-optical polariton condensate transistor switch. The experimental results are inte…
The mechanism of second thresholds observed in several experiments is theoretically revealed by studying the BEC-BCS-laser crossover in exciton-polariton systems. We found that there are two different types for the second thresholds; one is a crossover within quasi-equilibrium phases and the other is into non-equilibrium (lasing). In both cases, the light-induced band renormalization causes gaps in the conduction and valence bands, which indicates the exsistence of bound electron-hole pairs in contrast to earlier expectations. We also show that these two types can be distinguished by the gain …
We report on experimental study of the exciton-polariton emission (PE) polarization noise below and above the polariton lasing threshold under continuous wave nonresonant excitation. The experiments were performed with a high-Q graded 5λ/2 GaAs/AlGaAs microcavity with three quantum wells in the strong coupling regime. The PE polarization noise substantially exceeded in magnitude the shot noise level and, in the studied frequency range (up to 650 MHz), had a flat spectrum. We have found that the PE polarization noise magnitude dependence on the pump intensity showed specific features that had n…
The functionality of phonon-based quantum devices largely depends on the efficiency of interaction of phonons with other excitations. For phonon frequencies above 20 GHz, generation and detection of the phonon quanta can be monitored through photons. The photon-phonon interaction can be enormously strengthened by involving an intermediate resonant quasiparticle, e.g. an exciton, with which a photon forms a polariton. In this work, we discover a giant photoelasticity of exciton-polaritons in a short-period superlattice and exploit it for detecting propagating acoustic phonons. We demonstrate th…
Coherent sub-THz phonons incident on a gold grating that is deposited on a dielectric substrate undergo diffraction and thereby induce an alteration of the surface plasmon-polariton resonance. This results in efficient high-frequency modulation (up to 110 GHz) of the structure's reflectivity for visible light in the vicinity of the plasmon-polariton resonance. High modulation efficiency is achieved by designing a periodic nanostructure which provides both plasmon-polariton and phonon resonances. Our theoretical analysis shows that the dynamical alteration of the plasmon-polariton resonance is …
We study a two-species mixture of exciton-polaritons with self- and cross-interaction nonlinearities in a double well structure, in the presence of relaxation and continuous pumping. We identify the conditions that render the system parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric, and investigate its dynamic and static properties. We show that the system can exhibit long-term coherent oscillations of populations of the two polaritonic components between the two potential wells, and can simulate the dynamics of a pair of spin-1/2 particles (qubits) in the presence of exchange interaction.
We connect three phenomena in which a coherent electromagnetic field could be generated: polariton condensation, phase-locking in arrays of underdamped Josephson junctions, and lasing. All these phenomena have been described using Dicke-type models of spins coupled to a single photon mode. These descriptions may be distinguished by whether the spins are quantum or classical, and whether they are strongly or weakly damped.
Using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we identify excitation induced dephasing as a major mechanism responsible for the breaking of the strong-coupling between excitons and photons in a semiconductor microcavity. The effects of dephasing are observed on the transmitted probe pulse spectrum as a density dependent broadening of the exciton-polariton resonances and the emergence of a third resonance at high excitation density. A striking asymmetry in the energy shift between the upper and the lower polaritons is also evidenced. Using the excitonic Bloch equations, we quantify the respective …
Polaritons enable the resonant coupling of excitons and photons to vibrations in the application-relevant super high frequency (SHF, 3-30 GHz) domain. We introduce a novel platform for coherent optomechanics based on the coupling of exciton-polaritons and electrically driven SHF longitudinal acoustic phonons confined within the spacer region of a planar Bragg microcavity. An intrinsic property of the microcavity platform is the back-feeding of phonons via reflections at the sample boundaries, which enables frequency x quality factors products exceeding 10^14 Hz as well as huge modulation ampli…
Interacting bosonic particles in artificial lattices have proven to be a powerful tool for the investigation of exotic phases of matter as well as phenomena resulting from non-trivial topology. Exciton-polaritons, bosonic quasi-particles of light and matter, have shown to combine the on-chip benefits of optical systems with strong interactions, inherited form their matter character. Technologically significant semiconductor platforms, however, strictly require cryogenic temperatures for operability. In this paper, we demonstrate exciton-polariton lasing for topological defects emerging form th…
Nonlinear interactions in coherent gases are not only at the origin of of bright and dark solitons and superfluids. At the same time, they give rise to phenomena such as multistability, which hold great promise for the development of advanced photonic and spintronic devices. In particular, spinor multistability in strongly-coupled semiconductor microcavities shows that the spin of hundreds of exciton-polaritons can be coherently controlled, opening the route to spin-optronic devices such as ultrafast spin memories, gates or even neuronal communication schemes. Here, we demonstrate that switchi…
