We investigate the dynamics of chiral edge states in topological polariton systems under laser driving. Using a model system comprised of topolgically trivial excitons and photons with a chiral coupling proposed by Karzig et al. [Phys. Rev. X 5, 031001 (2015)], we investigate the real-time dynamics of a lattice version of this model driven by a laser pulse. By analyzing the time- and momentum-resolved spectral function, measured by time- and angle-resolved photoluminescence in analogy with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in electronic systems, we find that polaritonic states in a ribbon geometry are selectively excited via their resonance with the pump laser photon frequency. This selective excitation mechanism is independent of the necessity of strong laser pumping and polariton condensation. Our work highlights the potential of time-resolved spectroscopy as a complementary tool to real-space imaging for the investigation of topological edge state engineering in devices.
We consider a two-dimensional extension of the 1D waveguide quantum electrodynamics and investigate the nature of linear excitations in two-dimensional arrays of qubits coupled to networks of chiral waveguides. We show that the combined effects of chirality and long-range photon mediated qubit-qubit interactions lead to the emergence of the two-dimensional flat bands in the polaritonic spectrum, corresponding to slow strongly correlated light.
We report on the realization of a double barrier resonant tunneling diode for cavity polaritons, by lateral patterning of a one-dimensional cavity. Sharp transmission resonances are demonstrated when sending a polariton flow onto the device. We use a non-resonant beam can be used as an optical gate and control the device transmission. Finally we evidence distortion of the transmission profile when going to the high density regime, signature of polariton-polariton interactions.
We study the spectrum of a one-dimensional Kitaev chain placed in a microwave cavity. In the off-resonant regime, the frequency shift of the cavity can be used to identify the topological phase transition of the coupled system. In the resonant regime, the topology of the system can be controlled via the microwave cavity occupation and, moreover, for a large number of photons (classical limit), the physics becomes similar to that of periodically-driven systems (Floquet insulators). We also analyze numerically a finite chain and show the existence of a degenerate subspace in the presence of the …
The resonant scattering of surface plasmon-polariton waves by embedded semiconductor quantum dots above the dielectric/metal interface is explored in the strong-coupling regime. In contrast to non-resonant scattering by a localized dielectric surface defect, a strong resonant peak in the scattering field spectrum is predicted and accompanied by two side valleys. The peak height depends nonlinearly on the amplitude of surface plasmon-polariton waves, reflecting the feedback dynamics from a photon-dressed electron-hole plasma inside the quantum dots. This unique behavior in the scattering field …
The precise adjustment of the polariton condensate flow under incoherent excitation conditions is an indispensable prerequisite for polariton-based logic gate operations. In this report, an all-optical approach for steering the motion of a polariton condensate using only non-resonant excitation is demonstrated. We create arbitrarily shaped functional potentials by means of a spatial light modulator, which allow for tailoring the condensate state and guiding a propagating condensate along reconfigurable pathways. Additional numerical simulations confirm the experimental observations and elucida…
We report on confined exciton resonances of acoustic and folded acoustic phonon light scattering in a GaAs/AlAs multi-quantum-well. Significant variations of the line shifts and widths are observed across the resonance and quantitatively reproduced in terms of the polariton dispersion. This high resolution Brillouin study brings new unexpectedly detailed informations on the polariton dynamics in confined systems.
We realise bistability in the spinor of polariton condensates under non-resonant optical excitation and in the absence of biasing external fields. Numerical modelling of the system using the Ginzburg-Landau equation with an internal Josephson coupling between the two spin components of the condensate qualitatively describes the experimental observations. We demonstrate that polariton spin bistability persists for sweep times in the range of $[10 μsec,1 sec]$ offering a promising route to spin switches and spin memory elements.
We report experimental evidence of longitudinal optical (LO) phonon-intersubband polariton scattering processes under resonant injection of light. The scattering process is resonant with both the initial (upper polariton) and final (lower polariton) states and is induced by the interaction of confined electrons with longitudinal optical phonons. The system is optically pumped with a mid-IR laser tuned between 1094 cm-1 and 1134 cm-1 (lambda=9.14 um and lambda=8.82 um). The demonstration is provided for both GaAs/AlGaAs and InGaAs/AlInAs doped quantum well systems whose intersubband plasmon lie…
We analyze the interaction of exciton-polariton condensates in a one-dimensional semiconductor microcavity with acoustic phonons. We consider the case of a coherently pumped condensate and demonstrate that upon passing of a certain threshold the parametric instability in the system leads to the generation of a coherent acoustic wave and additional polariton harmonics. The process is strongly affected by exciton-exciton interactions which lead to the appearance of the effects of the bistability and hysteresis in the system.
Resonant photoelastic coupling in semiconductor nanostructures opens new perspectives for strongly enhanced light-sound interaction in optomechanical resonators. One potential problem, however, is the reduction of the cavity Q-factor induced by dissipation when the resonance is approached. We show in this letter that cavity-polariton mediation in the light-matter process overcomes this limitation allowing for a strongly enhanced photon-phonon coupling without significant lifetime reduction in the strongly-coupled regime. Huge optomechanical coupling factors in the PetaHz/nm range are envisaged…
We have theoretically investigated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains modelled as optical lattices (OL) loaded with exciton-polaritons. The chains have been subject to the resonant pumping of the edge site and shaken in either adiabatic or high-frequency regime. The topological state has been controlled by the relative phases of the lasers constructing the OL. The dynamic problem of the occupation of the lattice sites and eigenstates has been semi-classically solved. Finally, the analysis of the occupation numbers evolution has revealed that gapless, topologically trivial and non-trivial chain config…
Polariton condensates are investigated in periodical potentials created by surface acoustic waves using both resonant and non-resonant optical excitation. Under resonant pumping condensates are formed due to polariton parametric scattering from the pump. In this case the single particle dispersion in the presence of the condensate shows a strong reduction of the energy gap arising from the acoustic modulation, indicating efficient screening of the surface acoustic wave potential by spatial modulation of the polariton density. The observed results are in good agreement with a model based on gen…
Exciton polaritons in two-dimensional semiconductors inside microcavities are powerful platforms to explore hybrid light-matter quantum systems. Here, we study a macroscopic coherent population of the lowest energy state of polaron-polaritons, which are quasiparticles formed by the dressing of exciton polaritons by particle-hole excitations in a surrounding electron gas. Using a non-perturbative many-body theory to describe exciton-electron correlations combined with a non-equilibrium theory for the macroscopically populated state, we show that the electrons strongly affect the collective prop…
We propose and analyze theoretically a resonant acousto-optic Stark effect for microcavity (MC) polaritons parametrically driven by a surface acoustic wave. For GaAs-based microcavities our scheme ``acoustic pumping - optical probing'' deals with surface acoustic waves of frequency $ν_{\rm SAW} \simeq 0.5 - 3$ GHz and intensity $I_{\rm SAW} \simeq 0.1 - 10$ mW/mm. The acoustically-induced stop gaps in the MC polariton spectrum drastically change the optical response of MC polaritons. Because an acoustically pumped intrinsic semiconductor microcavity remains in its ground electronic state, no m…
We present a scheme to obtain anti-chiral edge states in an exciton-polariton honeycomb lattice with strip geometry, where the modes corresponding to both edges propagate in the same direction. Under resonant pumping the effect of a polariton condensate with nonzero velocity in one linear polarization is predicted to tilt the dispersion of polaritons in the other, which results in an energy shift between two Dirac cones and the otherwise flat edge states become tilted. Our simulations show that due to the spatial separation from the bulk modes the edge modes are robust against disorder.
We investigate and compare different optical probes of a condensed state of microcavity polaritons in expected experimental conditions of non-resonant pumping. We show that the energy- and momentum-resolved resonant Rayleigh signal provide a distinctive probe of condensation as compared to, e.g., photoluminescence emission. In particular, the presence of a collective sound mode both above and below the chemical potential can be observed, as well as features directly related to the density of states of particle-hole like excitations. Both resonant Rayleigh response and the absorption and photol…
In the regime of ensemble vibrational strong coupling (VSC), a macroscopic number $N$ of molecular transitions couple to each resonant cavity mode, yielding two hybrid light-matter (polariton) modes, and a reservoir of $N-1$ dark states whose chemical dynamics are essentially those of the bare molecules. This fact is seemingly in opposition to the recently reported modification of thermally activated ground electronic state reactions under VSC. Here, we provide a VSC Marcus-Levich-Jortner electron transfer model that potentially addresses this paradox: while entropy favors the transit through …
We show that in the recent artificial light-harvesting experiment [Angewandte Chemie Intl. Ed. 55, 2759 (2016)] on organic nanocrystals self-assembled from difluoroboron chromophores, the spontaneous emission of an excited pigment should undergo a two-step process. It would first decay to an excitonic polariton confined by cavity resonance via strong photon-exciton coupling. The captive intermediate could then funnel the energy directly to doped acceptors, leading to the observed over 90% transfer efficiency at less than 1/1000 acceptor-donor ratio. Theoretical, parameter-free analyses are in …
We demonstrate Resonant Tunneling Diodes, embedded in double metal cavities, strongly coupled to the cavity field, while maintaining their electronic properties. We measure the polariton dispersion and find a relative vacuum Rabi splitting of 16%, which explicitly qualifies for the strong-coupling regime. Additionally we show that electronic transport has a significant influence on the polaritons by modulating the coupling strength. The merge between electronic transport and polaritonic physics in our devices opens up a new aspect of cavity quantum electro-dynamics and integrated photonics.
The polarization dependence of nonequilibrium transitions in a multistable cavity-polariton system is studied under a nanosecond long resonant optical excitation at the normal and magic angle incidences with various polarizations of the pump beam. The temporal correlations between the frequency, intensity, and optical polarization of the intra-cavity field, which all undergo sharp threshold-like changes due to the spin dependent interaction of cavity polaritons, are visualized. The observed dynamics cannot be reproduced within the conventional semi-classical model based on the Gross-Pitaevskii…
We apply a microscopic theory of exciton-polaritons in cavity-confined monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides including both optical polarizations in the monolayer plane, allowing to describe how chiral cavity photons interact with the valley degrees of freedom of the active material. Upon polariton formation, the degenerate excitons inhabiting the two inequivalent valleys are shown to assume bonding and antibonding superpositions as a result of cavity-mediated intravalley interactions combined with intervalley Coulomb interactions. This is representative of a polariton-induced coherent mi…
Polariton spin carries the combination of the exciton and the photon spin, which is manifested in the circularly polarized emission degree in a III-V quantum wells microcavity system. Relaxation process of such spin system is a complex subject since it involve upper or lower polariton branch, resonant or non resonant polariton excitation process and if the particles are in strong or weak coupling regime. We present here experimental polariton spin Faraday rotation time measurement in GaAs single quantum well microcavity, using time resolved polariton photoluminescence by resonant excitation pr…
Adjusting the free-electron concentration, the surface plasmon frequency of the semiconductor ZnOGa is tuned into resonance with the molecular vibrations of the n-alkane tetracontane. Closed molecular films deposited on the semiconductor's surface in the monolayer regime generate distinct signatures in total-attenuated-reflection spectra at the frequencies of the symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrations of the CH2 group. Their line shape undergoes profound changes from absorptive to dispersive and even anti-resonance behavior when moving along the surface- plasmon dispersion by the angel…
Analysis of exciton-polariton condensation under different pumping schemes for 1D and 2D microcavities including the effect of strong correlation between polaritons
We present a scheme of interaction-induced topological bandstructures based on the spin anisotropy of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. We predict theoretically that this scheme allows the engineering of topological gaps, without requiring a magnetic field or strong spin-orbit interaction (transverse electric-transverse magnetic splitting). Under non-resonant pumping, we find that an initially topologically trivial system undergoes a topological transition upon the spontaneous breaking of phase symmetry associated with polariton condensation. Under resonant coherent pumping, w…
We consider theoretically one-dimensional polariton ring accounting for both longitudinal-transverse (TE-TM) and Zeeman splitting of spinor polariton states and spin dependent polariton-polariton interactions. We present the novel class of solutions in the form of the localized defects rotating with constant angular velocity and analyze their properties for realistic values of the parameters of the system. We show that the effects of the geometric phase arising from the interplay between external magnetic field and TE-TM splitting introduce chirality in the system and make solitons propagating…
Recently, exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity were found to condense into a coherent ground state much like a Bose-Einstein condensate and a superfluid. They have become a unique testbed for generating and manipulating quantum vortices in a driven-dissipative superfluid. Here, we generate exciton-polariton condensate with non-resonant Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) optical beam and verify the direct transfer of light's orbital angular momentum to exciton-polariton quantum fluid. Quantized vortices are found in spite of large energy relaxation involved in non-resonant pumping. We identifi…
We present theoretical and experimental study of resonant Brillouin scattering of excitonic polaritons in one-dimensional multiple-quantum-well structure. We obtain general analytical results for the scattering light spectra, valid for arbitrary quantum well arrangement. Application of our theory to the specific case of short-period superlattice shows a perfect quantitative agreement with experimental results for the height, width and position of the Brillouin scattering peaks and allows us to determine the energy, radiative and nonradiative decay rates of quantum well excitons. We reveal the …
Chiral surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be generated by linearly polarized light incident at the end of a nanowire, exciting a coherent superposition of three specific nanowire waveguide modes. Images of chiral SPPs on individual nanowires obtained from quantum dot fluorescence excited by the SPP evanescent field reveal the chirality predicted in our theoretical model. The handedness and spatial extent of the helical periods of the chiral SPPs depend on the input polarization angle and nanowire diameter as well as the dielectric environment. Chirality is preserved in the free-space output…
The low sensitivity of photons to external magnetic fields is one of the major challenges for the engineering of photonic lattices with broken time-reversal symmetry. Here we show that time-reversal symmetry can be broken for microcavity polaritons in the absence of any external magnetic field thanks to polarization dependent polariton interactions. Circularly polarized excitation of carriers in a micropillar induces a Zeeman-like energy splitting between polaritons of opposite polarizations. In combination with optical spin-orbit coupling inherent to semiconductor microstructures, the interac…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics of two dark solitons in a polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation. In particular, the analytical expression of the effective potential between two dark solitons is given. The resulting equation of motion captures how the open-dissipative character of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate affects the properties of dynamics of two-dark soliton, i.e., two-dark soliton relax by blending with the background at a finite time. We further simulate the relative motion of …

We consider scattering of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and light by individual high-refractive-index dielectric nanoparticles (NPs) located on a metal (gold) substrate and supporting electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the visible spectral range. Numerical calculations are carried out by making use of the discrete dipole approximation including the multipole decomposition procedure. Extinction and scattering cross section spectra of spheroid silicon NPs in visible and near-infrared are presented and discussed. The roles of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of electric and ma…
We study the nonequilibrium exciton-polariton condensation in 1D to 0D and 1D to 2D junctions by means of non-resonant spectroscopy. The shape of our potential landscape allows to probe the resonant transmission of a propagating condensate between a quasi-1D waveguide and cylindrically symmetric states. We observe a distinct mode selection by varying the position of the non-resonant pump laser. Moreover, we study the the case of propagation from a localized trapped condensate state into a waveguide channel. Here, the choice of the position of the injection laser allows us to tune the output in…
The dispersion properties of exciton polaritons in multiple-quantum-well based resonant photonic crystals are studied. In the case of structures with an elementary cell possessing a mirror symmetry with respect to its center, a powerful analytical method for deriving and analyzing dispersion laws of the respective normal modes is developed. The method is used to analyze band structure and dispersion properties of several types of resonant photonic crystals, which would not submit to analytical treatment by other approaches. These systems include multiple quantum well structures with an arbitra…
In this report we demonstrate a novel concept for a planar cavity polariton beam amplifier using non-resonant excitation. In contrast to resonant excitation schemes, background carriers are injected which form excitons, providing both gain and a repulsive potential for a polariton condensate. Using an attractive potential environment induced by a locally elongated cavity layer, the repulsive potential of the injected background carriers is compensated and a significant amplification of polariton beams is achieved without beam distortion.
The dynamics of propagating polariton condensates in one-dimensional microcavities is investigated through time resolved experiments. We find a strong increase in the condensate intensity when it travels through the non-resonantly excited area. This amplification is shown to come from bosonic stimulated relaxation of reservoir excitons into the polariton condensate, allowing for the repopulation of the condensate through non-resonant pumping. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate a polariton amplifier with a large band width, opening the way towards the transport of polaritons with high densitie…
Electronic resonances can significantly enhance the photon-phonon coupling in cavity optomechanics, but are normally avoided due to absorption losses and dephasing by inhomogeneous broadening. We experimentally demonstrate that exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities enable GHz optomechanics with single-particle resonant couplings reaching record values in the 10s of MHz range. Moreover, this resonant enhancement is protected from inhomogeneous broadening by the Rabi gap. Single-polariton non-linearities and the optomechanical strong-coupling regime become accessible in this platform…
We present a generic model for the description of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates, suited for the modelling of non-resonantly pumped polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity. The excitation spectrum and scattering of the non-equilibrium condensate with a defect are discussed.
Resonant interaction between excitonic transitions of molecules and localized electromagnetic field allows the formation of hybrid light-matter polaritonic states. This hybridization of the light and the matter states has been shown to be able to significantly alter the intrinsic properties of molecular ensembles placed inside the optical cavity. Here, we have achieved strong coupling between the excitonic transition in typical oligonucleotide-based molecular beacons labelled with a pair of organic dye molecules, demonstrating an efficient donor to acceptor resonance energy transfer, and the t…
We consider a polariton condensate in a microcavity driven by a bichromatic resonant pump formed by two vortical laser beams carrying different topological charges. The system is additionally confined in a ring-shaped potential. We show that in this system steadily rotating nonlinear localized modes can be excited, whose angular rotation frequency is determined by optical frequencies and topological charges of the pump beams. When pump frequencies approach eigenfrequencies of the modes of the ring potential, resonant growth of peak amplitude of the excited states occurs. Repulsive polariton-po…
We report observation of oscillations in the dynamics of a microcavity polariton condensate formed under pulsed non resonant excitation. While oscillations in a condensate have always been attributed to Josephson mechanisms due to a chemical potential unbalance, here we show that under some localisation conditions of the condensate, they may arise from relaxation oscillations, a pervasive classical dynamics that repeatedly provokes the sudden decay of a reservoir, shutting off relaxation as the reservoir is replenished. Using non-resonant excitation, it is thus possible to obtain condensate in…
We introduce and model spin-Rabi oscillations based on exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. The phase and polarization of oscillations can be controlled by resonant coherent pulses and the propagation of oscillating domains gives rise to phase-dependent interference patterns in real space. We show that interbranch polariton-polariton scattering controls the propagation of oscillating domains, which can be used to realize logic gates based on an analogue variable phase.
Strong coupling of excitonic resonances with a cavity gives rise to exciton-polaritons which possess a modified energy landscape compared to the uncoupled emitter. However, due to the femtosecond lifetime of the so-called bright polariton states and transient changes of the cavity reflectivity under excitation, it is challenging to directly measure the polariton excited state dynamics. Here, near-infrared pump-probe spectroscopy is used to investigate the ultrafast dynamics of exciton-polaritons based on strongly-coupled (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotubes in metal-clad microcavities. We pres…
Time resolved photoluminescence is a powerful technique to study the collective dynamics of excitons and polaritons in semiconductor nanostructures. We present a two excitation pulses technique to induce the ultrafast and controlled quenching of the exciton emission in a quantum well. The depth of the dip is given by the magnitude of the warming of the carriers induced by the arrival of a laser pulse when an exciton population is already present in the sample. We use this technique to study the relaxation mechanisms of polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, which are of great importance to…
We investigate the response of a polariton laser driven slightly off-resonantly using light fields differing from the routinely studied coherent pump sources. The response to driving light fields with thermal and displaced thermal statistics with varying correlation times shows significant differences in the transmitted intensity, its noise, and the position of the nonlinear threshold. We predict that adding more photons on average may actually reduce the transmission through the polariton system.
The dynamics of small perturbations against the stationary density matrix of a pumped polariton system with only one photon polarization is studied. Depending on the way the system is pumped and probed, decay times ranging from 30 to 5000 ps are found. The large decay times under resonant pumping are related to a bottleneck effect in the decay of the excess (probe) populations of dark polariton states. No singular behaviour at the threshold for polariton lasing is observed.
We address formation of stable dissipative surface solitons in the exciton-polariton condensate in one-dimensional array of microcavity pillars under the action of localized resonant pump acting in the edge resonator. We show that localization degree and peak amplitudes of surface solitons can be effectively controlled by the pump frequency and that the allowed energy gap of periodic structure determines the energy range, where surface solitons can form. One observes bistability at sufficiently large pump amplitudes and nonlinearity-induced shift of the position of resonance peak from the allo…
We have developed a theory of exciton-polariton band structure of resonant three-dimensional photonic crystals for arbitrary dielectric contrast and effective mass of the exciton that is excited in one of the compositional materials. The calculation has been carried out for a periodic array of spheres embedded in a dielectric matrix. It has been shown that the position of the lower branches of the polariton dispersion curve monotonously depends on the exciton effective mass and is determined by the coupling of light with the first few states of the mechanical exciton quantum confined inside ea…
Exciton-polariton lattices allow to implement topologically protected photonic edge states at optical frequencies. Taking advantage of the interacting character of polaritons, we show that several topological phases, belonging to the Quantum Anomalous Hall family, can occur in polariton graphene with the TE-TM spin-orbit coupling and an effective Zeeman field. This Zeeman field can be entirely controlled by the non-linearity of the macro-occupied mode created by circularly polarized resonant pumping. The topological phases found are distinct from the ones of normal graphene in presence of a co…
