A new class of laser, which harnesses coherence in both light and atoms, is possible with the use of ultra-cold alkaline earth atoms trapped in an optical lattice inside an optical cavity. Different lasing regimes, including superradiance, superradiant and conventional lasing, are distinguished by the relative coherence stored in the atoms and in the cavity mode. We analyze the physics in two different experimentally achievable regions of the superradiant lasing regime. Our calculations confirm the narrow linewidth of superradiant lasing for the doubly forbidden clock transition ${}^3 P_0 \to {}^1 S_0$ of strontium-87 atoms. Under strong driving of the dipole-forbidden transition ${}^3 P_1 \to {}^1 S_0$ of strontium-88 atoms the superradiant linewidth narrows further due to the coherent excitation of the cavity field.
Optical lattice clock systems with ultra-cold strontium-88 atoms have been used to demonstrate superradiant lasing and magnetic field-controlled optical transmission. We explain these phenomena theoretically with a rigorous model for three-level atoms coupled to a single cavity mode. We identify a class of dark atom-light dressed states which become accessible due to mixing with bright dressed states in the presence of a magnetic field. We predict that these states, under moderate incoherent pumping, lead to lasing with a linewidth of only tens of Hz, orders of magnitude smaller than the cavit…
We present simulations of the superradiant dynamics of ensembles of atoms in the presence of collective and individual atomic decay processes. We unravel the density matrix with Monte-Carlo wave-functions and identify the quantum jumps in a reduced Dicke state basis, which reflects the permutation symmetry of the identical atoms. While the number of density matrix elements in the Dicke representation increases polynomially with atom number, the quantum jump dynamics populates only a single Dicke state at the time and thus efficient simulations can be carried out for tens of thousands of atoms.…
A new approach for analytically solving quantum nonlinear Langevin equations is proposed and applied to calculations of spectra of superradiant lasers where collective effects play an important role. We calculate lasing spectra for arbitrary pump rates and recover well-known results such as the pump dependence of the laser linewidth across the threshold region. We predict new sideband peaks in the spectrum of superradiant lasers with large relaxation oscillations as well as new nonlinear structures in the lasing spectra for weak pump rates. Our approach sheds new light on the importance of pop…
Theoretical studies of superradiant lasing on optical clock transitions predict a superb frequency accuracy and precision closely tied to the bare atomic linewidth. Such a superradiant laser is also robust against cavity fluctuations when the spectral width of the lasing mode is much larger than that of the atomic medium. Recent predictions suggest that this unique feature persists even for a hot and thus strongly broadened ensemble, provided the effective atom number is large enough. Here we use a second-order cumulant expansion approach to study the power, linewidth and lineshifts of such a …
We present the non-equilibrium phase diagram of a model which can demonstrate both Dicke--Hepp--Lieb superradiance and regular lasing by varying the coherent and incoherent driving terms. We find that the regions in the phase diagram corresponding to superradiance and standard lasing are always separated by a normal region. We analyse the behaviour of the system using a combination of exact numerics based on permutation symmetry of the density matrix for small to intermediate numbers of molecules, and second order cumulant equations for large numbers of molecules. We find that the nature of th…
Lasing in the bad cavity regime has promising applications in precision metrology due to the reduced sensitivity to cavity noise. Here we investigate the spectral properties and phase behavior of pulsed lasing on the $^1$S$_0 - ^3$P$_1$ line of $^{88}$Sr in a mK thermal ensemble, as first described in arxiv:1903.12593. The system operates in a regime where the Doppler-broadened atomic transition linewidth is several times larger than the cavity linewidth. We find that by detuning the cavity resonance, the influence of the cavity noise on the peak lasing frequency can be eliminated to first ord…
A cold atomic gas with an inverted population on a transition coupled to a field mode of an optical resonator constitutes a generic model of a laser. For quasi-continuous operation, external pumping, trapping and cooling of the atoms is required to confine them in order to achieve enough gain inside the resonator. As inverted atoms are high-field seekers in blue detuned light fields, tuning the cavity mode to the blue side of the atomic gain transition allows for combining lasing with stimulated cavity cooling and dipole trapping of the atoms at the antinodes of the laser field. We study such …
We study the effect of spontaneous emission and incoherent atomic pumping on the nonlinear semiclassical dynamics of the unbalanced Dicke model -- a generalization of the Dicke model that features independent coupling strengths for the co- and counter-rotating interaction terms. As well as the ubiquitous superradiant behavior the Dicke model is well-known for, the addition of spontaneous emission combined with the presence of strong counter-rotating terms creates laser-like behavior termed counter-lasing. These states appear in the semiclassical model as stable periodic orbits. We perform a co…
The prospects of superradiant lasing on the 7.5 kHz wide $^1$S$_0$-$^3$P$_1$ transition in $^{88}$Sr is explored by using numerical simulations of two systems based on realistic experimental numbers. One system uses the idea of demonstrating continuous superradiance in a simple, hot atom beam with high flux, and the other system is based on using ultra-cold atoms in a dipole guide. We find that the hot beam system achieves lasing above a flux of $2.5 \times 10^{12}$ atoms/s. It is capable of outputting hundreds of nW and suppressing cavity noise by a factor of 20-30. The second order Doppler s…
Lasing and steady state superradiance are two phenomena that may appear at first glance to be distinct. In a laser, phase information is maintained by a macroscopic intracavity light field, and the robustness of this phase is what leads to the coherence of the output light. In contrast, the coherence of steady-state superradiant systems derives from the macroscopic collective dipole of a many-atom ensemble. In this paper, we develop a quantum theory that connects smoothly between these two extreme limits. We show that lasing and steady-state superradiance should be thought of as the two extrem…
The driven-dissipative Dicke model features normal, superradiant, and lasing steady-states that may be regular or chaotic. We report quantum signatures of chaos in a quench protocol from the lasing states. Within the framework of a classical mean-field perspective, once quenched, the system relaxes either to the normal or to the superradiant state. Quench-from-chaos, unlike quench from a regular lasing state, exhibits erratic dependence on control parameters. In the quantum domain this sensitivity implies an effect that is similar to universal conductance fluctuations.
Today's best atomic clocks are limited by frequency noise on the lasers used to interrogate the atoms. A proposed solution to this problem is to create a superradiant laser using an optical clock transition as its gain medium. This laser would act as an active atomic clock, and would be highly immune to the fluctuations in reference cavity length that limit today's best lasers. Here, we demonstrate and characterize superradiant emission from the mHz linewidth clock transition in an ensemble of laser-cooled $^{87}$Sr atoms trapped within a high-finesse optical cavity. We measure a collective en…
We report on the observation of collective atomic recoil lasing and superradiant Rayleigh scattering with ultracold and Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in an optical ring cavity. Both phenomena are based on instabilities evoked by the collective interaction of light with cold atomic gases. This publication clarifies the link between the two effects. The observation of superradiant behavior with thermal clouds as hot as several tens of $μ\textrm{K}$ proves that the phenomena are driven by the cooperative dynamics of the atoms, which is strongly enhanced by the presence of the ring cavity.
We study a model of a photon mode dipole-coupled to a medium of two-level oscillators in a microcavity in the presence of dephasing processes introduced by coupling to external baths. Decoherence processes can be classified as pair-breaking or non-pair-breaking in analogy with magnetic or non-magnetic impurities in superconductors. In the absence of dephasing, the ground state of the model is a polariton condensate with a gap in the excitation spectrum. Increase of the pair-breaking parameter $γ$ reduces the gap, which becomes zero at a critical value $γ_{C1}$; for large $γ$, the conventional …
Spin-polarised atomic ensembles probed by light based on the Faraday interaction are a versatile platform for numerous applications in quantum metrology and quantum information processing. Here we consider an ensemble of Alkali atoms that are continuously optically pumped and probed. Due to the collective scattering of photons at large optical depth, the steady state of atoms does not correspond to an uncorrelated tensor-product state, as is usually assumed. We introduce a self-consistent method to approximate the steady state including the pair correlations, taking into account the multilevel…
Hybrid photonic-plasmonic nanostructures allow one to engineer coupling of quantum emitters and cavity modes accounting for the direct coherent and environment mediated dissipative pathways. Using generalized plasmonic Dicke model, we explore the non-equilibrium phase diagram with respect to these interactions. The analysis shows that their interplay results in the extension of the superradiant and regular lasing states to the dissipative coupling regime and an emergent lasing phase without population inversion having boundary with the superradiant and normal states. Calculated photon emission…
We develop a stochastic mean-field theory to describe active frequency measurements of pulsed superradiant emission, studied in recent experiments with strontium-87 atoms trapped in an optical lattice inside an optical cavity [M. Norcia, et al., Phys. Rev. X 8, 21036 (2018)]. Our theory reveals the intriguing dynamics of atomic ensembles with multiple transition frequencies, and it reproduces the superradiant beats signal, noisy power spectra, and frequency uncertainty in remarkable agreement with the experiments. Moreover, by reducing the number of atoms, elongating the superradiant pulses an…
For the visualization of quantum states, the approach based on Wigner functions can be very effective. Homodyne detection has been extensively used to obtain the density matrix, Wigner functions and tomographic reconstructions of optical fields for many thermal, coherent or squeezed states. Here, we use time-domain optical homodyne tomography for the quantum state recognition and reconstruction of the femtosecond optical field from a nonequilibrium superradiant coherent electron-hole state formed in a semiconductor laser structure. We observe severe deviations from the Poissonian statistics of…
We consider the fundamental problem of high temperature phase transitions in the system of high density two-level atoms off-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity. OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition we analyze the problem of thermodynamically equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing a real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of atomic DSs thermalization pr…
We theoretically investigate the emission properties of a single-mode cavity coupled to a mesoscopic number of incoherently pumped quantum emitters. We propose an operational measure for the medium cooperativity, valid both in the bad and in the good cavity regimes. We show that the opposite regimes of subradiance and superradiance correspond to negative and positive cooperativity, respectively. The lasing regime is shown to be characterized by nonnegative cooperativity. In the bad cavity regime we show that the cooperativity defines the transitions from subradiance to superradiance. In the go…
The Dicke model describes the coupling between a quantized cavity field and a large ensemble of two-level atoms. When the number of atoms tends to infinity, this model can undergo a transition to a superradiant phase, belonging to the mean-field Ising universality class. The superradiant transition was first predicted for atoms in thermal equilibrium and was recently realized with a quantum simulator made of atoms in an optical cavity, subject to both dissipation and driving. In this Progress Report, we offer an introduction to some theoretical concepts relevant to the Dicke model, reviewing t…
We investigate the different photon emission regimes created by a preexcited and collimated atomic beam passing through a single mode of an optical cavity. In the regime where the cavity degrees of freedom can be adiabatically eliminated, we find that the atoms undergo superradiant emission when the collective linewidth exceeds the transit-time broadening. We analyze the case where the atomic beam direction is slanted with respect to the cavity axis. For this situation, we find that a phase of continuous light emission similar to steady-state superradiance is established providing the tilt of …
We consider various approaches to the creation of a high-stability active optical frequency standard, where the atomic ensemble itself produces a highly stable and accurate frequency signal. The short-time frequency stability of such standards may overcome the stability of lasers stabilized to macroscopic cavities which are used as local oscillators in the modern optical frequency standard systems. The main idea is to create a "superradiant" laser operating deep in the bad cavity regime, where the decay rate of the cavity field significantly exceeds the decoherence rate of the lasing transitio…
In the first part of this thesis I study the intermediate regime between ordinary lasing and a BEC of exciton polaritons. I take into account the fermionic structure of polaritons, treating the excitons as two-level systems coupled to a single mode in a microcavity. I introduce decoherence and dissipation processes to this system. Employing many-body Green function techniques, similar to those used by Abrikosov and Gor'kov in their theory of gapless superconductivity, I provide a mathematical structure that unifies models of lasers with models of condensates. This allows me to study the stabil…

We address the dynamics induced by collective atomic recoil in a Bose-Einstein condensate in presence of radiation losses and atomic decoherence. In particular, we focus on the linear regime of the lasing mechanism, and analyze the effects of losses and decoherence on the generation of entanglement. The dynamics is that of three bosons, two atomic modes interacting with a single-mode radiation field, coupled with a bath of oscillators. The resulting three-mode dissipative Master equation is solved analytically in terms of the Wigner function. We examine in details the two complementary limits …
